AnambraDota:Op guess u don't understand the voting system with Buhari winning in the North. If he didn't produce at least 25% from the states in SW so u think he's going to be sworn in. He didn't win in the SE or SS thanks to SW who gave him the mantle. So don't mumu ur self numbers don't count. The 25% counted more and u have to provide 25% in at least 20 states I think. So how do the north wants to provide that assuming Gej provide the number of percentage and Buhari doesn't my guy na Gej for win am. |

Colonel Hamid Ibrahim Alli is a brave Bauchi Prince. He was a military governor of Kaduna state and a diehard IBB boy who is reputed to have made the statement "I can follow IBB to war blindfolded" to show how much he believed in IBB as a general. But that didn't stop him from looking IBB in the face and telling him he was wrong on the case of the annulment of June 12 1993 elections. He lost his commission because he refused to support the annulment of the June 12 election and Abacha's takeover of government instead of handing over to MKO. Despite his famous dislike for MKO, whom he saw as an arrogant man, he insisted justice and fairplay must be done. He demanded MKO be sworn in even if he was a devil. Rumour has it that he would have been killed if not because he was a blue blood. He left the Army and government unceremoniously, a simple man without money or scandal. According to reports, he is into poultry farming and still drives a 504 Peugeot. Colonel Hamid Ibrahim Ali is currently undergoing SSS screening in preparation for his appointment. Immediately there were feelers that he will emerge the next EFCC Chairman, corrupt politicians have been on panic mode. Some have started refunding stolen funds. You heard it here first".

One of the headline news of the week which ended yesterday was the story that the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari had directed his aides to ban the Africa Independent Television (AIT) from covering his activities. From my personal knowledge of Buhari, I out-rightly disbelieved the story. But I was however dead sure that because the statement validates the hate documentaries directed at the man during the last electioneering period, many Nigerians would have cause to wonder aloud if truly, a dictator has not been thrust on them. I imagined that civil society groups, human rights activists and publicity conscious politicians would condemn the policy and for the better part of the week throw missiles at Buhari and his political party-the All Progressive Congress (APC). I was not proved wrong. Luckily, the tension the subject generated was doused by two developments. First, the APC established that no such policy was discussed and agreed upon making it quite easy for her to promptly disown it. Second, the President-elect himself similarly disowned the story. But not many people believed the denials because the rationale which Buhari’s media aide who first disclosed the plan gave for it showed that the party was up to some reprisal that some people expected would happen considering the hate campaigns transmitted by some broadcast stations including the AIT. It would be recalled that during the electioneering period, Buhari’s media aides had cause to worry over the high level of media partisanship against their principal particularly the allegation that they were denied advert spots by the media to put across Buhari’s messages to the electorate. If this happened, the acrimony between them and the offending media may take some time to heal, but we plead for maturity, magnanimity and remorse on all sides. If the truth is to be told, we will not hesitate to reject any attempt to gag any media organization in Nigeria. But we will not stop there. We will in addition continue to deprecate the transmission of hate speeches by the media during the last electioneering campaigns. This is because hate speeches can dismember the very society we all seek to live in. As a result, truth cannot justify hate speeches which can incite insurrection, genocide and fratricidal killings. We also denounce the failure of the media to provide a level playing field for the last Presidential election. But although such unethical behaviour was done by the media, we know as of fact that such media were coerced either by ownership control or outright purchase. For this reason, we believe that the nation should blame not only the media; a large share of the blame ought to go to such sponsors who often play dirty at elections. It is on this basis that we see as laughable the statement credited to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemning the alleged ban on AIT. Nigerians have always looked forward to a strong opposition party that would keep the ruling party on its toes for the benefit of the governed. If the PDP would do so to the APC on the people’s behalf as from May 29, 2015, it would be a welcome development. However, it appears rather too early to see the PDP frowning at a culture it invented and heavily invested in for so long up until less than a month ago. Any objective observer would agree that the ruling party has always coerced broadcast professionals in government owned media to act unprofessionally. The argument that the professionals should not have allowed themselves to be willing tools in the hands of government is unrealistic. It is because government can intimidate virtually everyone that journalists transmit hate speeches at its command; it also explains why our security agencies watch as ballot boxes are snatched at election venues just as it shows why supposed men of proven integrity in our electoral body announce fake votes the same way men of courage and wisdom in the judiciary give jaundiced judgments. Government can in fact push soldiers to speak from two sides of their mouths about the school certificate of their former commander in chief. What then can government not do? In other words, government has powers to manipulate any public officer, just as it has enough resources to buy people in the private sector to do its bidding. As recent media reports suggested, even the self-acclaimed men of God saw divergent visions because of materialistic considerations and could not be surpassed by traditional rulers who were paid to lose their ‘father of all’ status. Thus, the government that has just finished doing all of this should be scorned for purporting to condemn others because as the saying goes only those with clean hands are allowed to come to equity. A government that can relieve a tested statesman like General Martin Luther Agwai of his job few hours after exercising his constitutional right to hold an opinion and canvas it should let our wounds heal from its assaults before delivering its ‘wisdom after event’ treatise. Meanwhile, the denial by the APC and the President-elect of any attempt to gag the media ought to be taken in good faith. Even if they had earlier planned to do what they have now denied, it is a sign that a government which would be sensitive to public feeling is on its way. Indeed, the reaction of the public to the subject clearly suggests that Nigerians cherish a free press that can help them make government accountable to the people as envisaged by Section 22 of our constitution bearing in mind that for the aggressive posture of the media, independence in 1960 and all that we have today would have been hard to achieve. Any anti-media disposition at this point when Nigerians are hopeful of societal regeneration would be against the run of play. Therefore, neither Buhari nor his party is expected to engage in ‘tit for tat’ or to be as petty as their predecessors; rather, what we expect is leadership by example that can throw forth not just strong individuals but strong societal institutions. http://www.thescoopng.com/ex-nta-boss-iredia-writes-about-the-so-called-ban-on-ait-and-how-pdp-used-to-coerce-journalists/

All is not well with the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party’s rank and file seems in disarray following the alleged dropping of the names of Lagos governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) and former Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi from the ministerial list of President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). According to our investigation, both men who are supposed to be candidates of the national leader of the party Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu may not be enjoying the support of the Jagaban of Borgu kingdom that is expected to press for their inclusion. National Weekender learnt that their names were initially pencilled down on the list still being worked on before final vetting by the party’s national leadership but on advice of a very powerful chieftain in the South West, the names of the duo were erased. This development has irked the trio of governors Chibuike Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rochas Okorocha and Adams Oshiohmole of Rivers, Kano, Imo and Edo States respectively. The governors in a show of solidarity for the duo who belongs to their constituency (Governors Forum even as Fayemi is no longer in office) felt slighted that they were not carried along in the decision to drop both men who had worked tirelessly to actualize the victory of the party in the 2015 General Elections. Recall that Fayemi was Director of Media and Publicity of Buhari’s Campaign Organization even as Fashola played a supporting role behind the Director-General Gov. Amaechi. To this end, the governors frowned at the dropping of their names since it was not a reward for their hard work but rather an exercise of ingratitude which is capable of disuniting the party. Feelers from the party suggest that Fayemi was to get the portfolio of Minister for Information since he is the face of the party in Ekiti despite losing to Ayo Fayose in the gubernatorial election held on June 26 2014. Meanwhile Fashola would have been Minister for Works on account of his performance as governor of Lagos. Our investigation further reveals that as replacements for Fashola and Fayemi, the very powerful party chieftain moving for their exclusion has recommended Sen. Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon and former governor, Segun Oni respectively. Says one of our sources, “ there is real trouble brewing within our party. A powerful member of the party in the South West has called for the names of Fashola and Fayemi to be dropped from the ministerial list. This has not gone down well with some very influential members of the party who are governors. “Kwankwaso who is a great admirer of Fashola has kicked the decision to drop the latter into touch. He enjoys the support of Governors Amaechi, Oshiohmole and Okorocha. These governors feel that if this powerful party chieftain is not stopped now he may run their interests down in the party. A meeting will be held before the final ratification of the list by the party’s leadership and the aggrieved governors want to seize the opportunity to make their position known. And it is simply that Fashola and Fayemi must be on Buhari’s cabinet.” National Weekender scooped that the second term move of Fashola which was against the wish of his godfather Tinubu was responsible for his plight. He is perhaps paying the prize for doing a second term. It is believed that he has not been forgiven by Tinubu for daring the Lion of Bourdillon. On Fayemi’s part, it is said that Tinubu is still angry with him for carelessly conceding defeat to Fayose in the 2014 governorship election when he actually had everything going for him. But Fayemi’s real sin was to have congratulated Fayose after the result of the election was announced without getting clearance from Tinubu. One of our sources says, “This ministerial list is a very contentious issue especially as it concerns the dropping of the names of both men. Buhari is yet to say anything about the list because the leadership of the party entrusted the exercise in the hands of Tinubu who is the clearing house and coordinating all the interest groups within the party and those chosen to pick or appoint candidates. Mat be he will eventually speak at the meeting where expectedly the leadership of the party will take a stand. http://www.mbnewsline.com/2015/05/apc-camp-buhari-drops-governors-fashola.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&m=0

A group, Centre for Social Justice, on Wednesday urged a Federal High Court in Abuja to send the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to jail for contempt of court. CSJ, through its counsel, Kingsley Nnajika, urged the presiding judge, Justice Abdulkadir Abdu-Kafarati to jail the minister for disobeying the court’s judgment delivered on February 25, 2014, directing her to provide details of statutory disbursement to some federal agencies. Nnajika was arguing its application for committal (Form 49) which he filed against Okonjo-Iweala following the alleged disobedience of the order of court. Justice Abdulkafarati fixed ruling on the CSJ’s prayer for June 3. Nnajika urged Justice Abdu-Kafarati to commit Okonjo-Iweala as the orders of the court were unambiguous in relation to the directive for the minister to supply it with its requested information. He faulted the claim by the minister, who he said had in her affidavit of compliance, that she had written to the named agencies. The lawyer said, “The order did not say the respondent (the minister) should give us acknowledgment copies of letters written to the agencies. The case lasted about one and half years. “The respondent never said she had no access to the information we requested. Having failed to comply with the order, the court is left with no option than to make an order, based on our Form 49 already filed, committing the respondent (Finance Minister) to prison until she complies with the order of the court.” But the minister’s lawyer, Abdulhameed Ibrahim, urged the court to reject CSJ’s prayer. He argued that the minister did not disobey the court order because the information requested by the applicant was not within the direct reach of the minister. Ibrahim, in the affidavit of compliance, urged the court to give mandatory orders, mandating three of the recalcitrant agencies to comply with the request. “Three bodies, namely NNDC, NJC and the National Assembly have refused to accept and acknowledge the request. Only a court order mandating the other three cooperative bodies will compel them to furnish the applicant with the necessary information,” the lawyer said. CSJ had sued the minister upon her refusal to honour its request, made under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, for the release of details of statutory transfers in the 2013 budget to six Federal Government’s agencies. The agencies include the National Judicial Council, Niger-Delta Development Commission, Universal Basic Education Commission, National Assembly, Independent National Electoral Commission and the National Human Rights Commission. Justice Abdu-Kafarati had in his judgement in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/301/2013, upheld CSJ’s claim and ordered the minister to among others, supply the information requested by the applicant. The applicant insisted that despite being served with the court’s judgment and enrolled orders of the judgment, Okonjo-Iweala declined to obey the judgement, forcing the applicant to issue Form 48 (notice of consequence of disobedience of court orders) and Form 49 (motion for order of committal). http://www.punchng.com/news/group-asks-court-to-jail-okonjo-iweala/ |
His name is Gabriel. How we met? I don’t remember. Through whom we met? I have no idea. Was I the one who saw him first or he saw me first? I have no recollection. So what do I remember? Why write this ode? I’m a sucker for broken songs. Even when I’m in a relationship and should genuinely be happy, songs like ‘Baby Gone’ by Asa keep me steady. I sit here, this early morning and I’m wondering why I should tilt more to these kinds of songs. It’s occurring to me; I must write this ode-The ode to my first love. Here’s what I remember. I was sixteen when we met. A tall, dark, lean maybe not so handsome boy and a few years older than me. He fulfilled the physical impressions of my ‘ideal’ as ‘Silhouette’ and Nora Roberts were my best companions at this phase. There was only one problem; he had asked me to date him and I said no(weren’t we all told by our mothers that boys like it when you play hard to get?). At this point, he was twenty nearing twenty-one and you can only imagine the kind of attention other girls were throwing his way. I think he just moved on from asking me out(I wish he would continue though) and before I knew it, we had friend-zoned each other. As bad as that sounds, and believe me, I really just wanted to beat him with a stick on the head so he would remember to ask me out again, there were a few perks to being in the friend zone. Gabriel would drive all the way to my house(and I say all the way because it really was for him)mostly at night and tell me all about his day and budding business and encourage me to talk about mine and my aspirations for the future. When there was nothing to say, we would find comfort in the silence of his car just sitting there, saying nothing and holding hands. Oh! How I looked forward to his visits. I convinced myself that we were just meant to be friends and so we were; two young fellows exploring the world as they knew it and helping each other get better. By the time I was eighteen, we had lost touch. How? I had gained admission into university and was offered a course that I didn’t like but took anyways because I didn’t want to upset my father. After a year of passing but being upset and sad about what I was doing, I dropped out of school. My dad almost had a heart attack. I decided to take pre-degree for a year in Ife to rediscover myself and what I really wanted to do with my life. The process of rediscovery had to take a physical form. I changed everything about me: my hair, my course of study, my phone number. In pre-degree, I met awesometastic(awesome+fantastic)people who, just like me, wanted to find the path that they loved. One of such persons was Adeola and she would come to play a major hand in my reconnecting with Gabriel. Adeola invited myself and some other friends to her house for drinks. I was my usual crazy self and even when her brother Flo walked in, I was still in my ‘zone’. Flo laughed really hard at my jokes and thought my mind was beautiful(well, either he said that much or that’s how I’m choosing to remember the story!). After my meeting Flo, he was describing me to his friends of which Gabriel was one of,and my description matched the profile Gabriel remembered. Flo got my number from Adeola and gave to Gabriel. All this happened behind my back but I was soon to be brought in the light. By pre-degree, no one was playing hard to get any more. Everyone was rebelling against what our mothers told us and was having boyfriends and sex for breakfast, orgasms for lunch and makeup sex for dinner. They all had become really cute at disobeying. I am a very late bloomer. I started growing breast when everyone was firmed up and menstruating when some of my mates had had at least one abortion so I wasn’t really shocked when by now, I hadn’t been kissed or ever been in a relationship (I’m a late bloomer, damn it!) My annoying monotone phone ringtone cut through my sleep. Grudgingly, I picked up to say hello. My voice sounded really sexy so I decided to say iy again ‘Hello’. ‘Hi, Tobi’ I froze! I really did freeze! In a shaken voice I responded ‘Gabriel? Is that you?’ ‘Yes’ he said. That’s how we reconnected again. He told me how he got my new number but I honestly couldn’t be bothered. My friend was back! The dynamic duo was back together! Once I returned home for the holiday, we were inseparable. Gisting and laughing every opportunity we got. His dreams were huge and so were mine. He had started up a business and I was still finding myself. We laughed hard at some of his friends who shopped around their resume without knowing what their objectives were. He’d encourage me to find and stay true to myself. ‘that really is the key to happiness’, he would say to me. A fine, wise, young man. I was happy to be his friend and he mine. We had gone out together one evening and it was getting late so Gabriel decided to drop me at home. Gabriel pulled his car to a stop. I said goodnight and wanted to hug him. The damn seatbelt wasn’t releasing so Gabriel leaned over to help me. He released the seat belt but he wasn’t moving. My heart stopped. Why, oh why did I feel this way? Didn’t my heart just stop now? Why was it beating fast like the rock rhythms of Michael Jackson? By the way, what happened to all the air in the car? It suddenly was too hot. By now, Gabriel was looking in my soul. I could swear he saw it. I could see his eyes and I saw the want in it. The want for me. He wanted me? Why? Couldn’t he see that I was a tom boy with no girly features whatsoever? And the way he smelt? Try a thirty-five year whiskey from a cask! Sweet and fruity! It was like the first time in my life I could properly smell. He came close(or maybe I was the one who went close). Really close. I felt his lips on mine. He guided my tongue and directed my lips. Sloppy? It was the perfect first kiss. I couldn’t hold still. This kiss had me shaken? What happens next? Are we still friends? Why did he kiss me? He wanted us to talk. I wanted to figure stuff out on my own before talking about what I had no idea about. I left the car and hurriedly walked home. I would later delete his number(silly much?) and stop picking his calls. The damn kiss blew my mind away and got me spinning out of control-one thing I hate to loose. With my new resolve, Gabriel and I stopped talking and before I knew it, we lost touch. http://www.360nobs.com/2015/04/an-ode-to-my-first-love-episode-one/

John Ugbe Two Lagos-based legal practitioners, Oluyinka Oyeniji and Osasuyi Adebayo, have commenced contempt proceedings against the Managing Director of MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, Mr. John Ugbe, for allegedly violating a court order. Ugbe, alongside the Public Relations Manager of the company, Caroline Oghuma, is liable to being jailed if found guilty of the allegation. The lawyers had, on April 2, 2015, secured a court order of interim injunction restraining MultiChoice from giving effect to its proposed 20 per cent increment on subscription fee on the Digital Satellite Television (DStv) being operated by it. Justice C.J. Aneke of a Federal High Court in Lagos, who made the interim order, had held that the order would subsist till the determination of a lawsuit contesting the legality of MultiChoice’s newly-introduced subscription rates on DStv. However, at the resumed hearing on Thursday, one of the plaintiffs, Oyeniyi, informed the court that in spite of the court order, MultiChoice had not stopped its new rates, which had commenced from April 1. “My Lord, whether wrongly or rightly, on the 2nd of April, your Lordship made an order that is bound to be obeyed. We filed a further affidavit citing the defendants for contempt of court,” Oyeniyi said. In their motion on notice, served on the defendants along with Forms 48 and 49, the lawyers attached as exhibits copies of receipts issued by MultiChoice to certain subscribers reflecting payment of the new subscription rate of N13, 980 rather than the old rate of N11, 650 in spite of the court order. “It is in the interest of justice to grant this application and empower the honourable court as the place of last resort to the plaintiffs in preserving the dignity of the court,” the plaintiffs pleaded as they urged the court to make an order of committal against Ugbe and Oghuma. The other prayer contained in their motion on notice was for the court to order MultiChoice to make a refund of all excess charges to all customers who had subscribed to the new rate in the face of the subsisting court order. The plaintiffs also asked for an order mandating MultiChoice to tender a full page public apology in four national newspapers including The Punch, ThisDay, The Guardian and The Sun, to all subscribers for violating the court order. They also want the court to compel the company to tender televised apology on DStv as well as via text messages to all subscribers in the country. But lawyer for MultiChoice, Mr. M.J. Onigbanjo (SAN), said the order was wrongly made. He noted that while the order was granted on April 2, the increment that the applicants complained of took effect on April 1 and his client could, therefore, not be held for contempt of court. But Oyeniyi maintained that the order was for a continuing action rather than a concluded action. The plaintiffs in their substantive suit are seeking an order of the court compelling the National Broadcasting Commission to regulate the activities of MultiChoice on DStv. They want an enforcement of the pay-per-view scheme, whereby subscribers would only pay for programmes they watched, as was being done in other parts of the world where MultiChoice operated. But the company, through Onigbanjo, is challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit as well as the competence of the originating summons served on it. Onigbanjo contended that the applicants lacked the locus standi to institute the action, saying they could not dictate how MultiChoice would run and conduct its business. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria also insisted that it was not within the authority of NBC to prevent the company from making increment in the price of services being offered to its customers. He pointed the attention of the court to clauses 40 and 41 of the company’s terms of conditions which stated that “MultiChoice Nigeria may, from time to time, change the fees payable to MultiChoice Nigeria for the MultiChoice service by way of general amendment.” Onigbanjo said the plaintiff had no reasonable cause of action, just as he described the suit as academic “because the act complained of has been completed.” Besides, he argued that the originating summons served on his client was defective, as service was not compliant with Section 97 of the Sheriffs and Civil Process Act, as regards a writ that must be served outside the court’s jurisdiction. http://www.punchng.com/news/contempt-lawyers-ask-court-to-jail-multichoice-md/

Fresh facts have emerged on the March 31 attempt by a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, to scuttle the announcement of the March 28 presidential election results. The main part of Orubebe’s action, according to Reuters on Thursday, was a plot to use hired thugs to kidnap the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and consequently stall the electoral process. The news agency quoted unnamed pro-democracy advocates and a Nigeria-based diplomat as saying that one of Jega’s aides unearthed the plot. It said that the aide had sent a text message to an independent voting monitor, “warning of an imminent threat to the electoral process.” Reuters said it pieced the information together from the text message, events on the ground during the announcement of the results and interviews with pro-democracy advocates and diplomats in Abuja. It added that when the independent voting monitor sent the SMS, he hoped the outside world would hear of the plot and the text of the message . “Fellow countrymen, Nigeria on Trial,” read the SMS sent on the morning of March 31 to the head of the Situation Room, an Abuja-based coalition of human rights groups and pro-democracy advocates monitoring the elections. “Plans are on storm [sic] the podium at the ICC Collation Centre and disrupt the process. Nobody is sue [sic] what will happen. Please share this as widely as possible,” the text read further. At that moment, Jega was about to preside over the announcement of the results. As tallies from around the country showed that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, was leading, “unidentified PDP(Peoples Democratic Party) hard-liners started to panic, seeking ways of manipulating the count,” the boss of the Situation Room and the diplomat said, citing political contacts in the Niger Delta and Abuja. Realising they could not engineer an outright win, the PDP agents set about doctoring the tally at collation centres in pro- (Goodluck) Jonathan areas to ensure Buhari failed to meet a requirement for 25 per cent support in two-thirds of the states, the head of the Situation Room said, citing reports from election monitors on the ground. Reuters said its reporter witnessed and photographed one tally list in Port Harcourt, Rivers State with suspiciously similar totals for registered voters at polling stations: 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 450. In another tally centre in the city, 17,594 valid votes were recorded out of a registered voter population of 11,757, the Reuters reporter said. Foreign election observers also noted the peculiarities – and contacted diplomats in Abuja who called in international intervention. The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, and his British counterpart, Philip Hammond, who were in Switzerland for talks on Iran – issued a tough statement saying vote counting “may be subject to deliberate political interference.” But as Buhari’s lead grew, some PDP supporters from the Niger Delta, including Orubebe, decided on a final gamble: to create a disturbance in the main INEC hall and have “thugs snatch Jega from the stage, Reuters quoted the Head of the Situation Room and the Abuja-based diplomat. What the group planned to do after the abduction was unclear, they said. “It was a desperate thing, mostly by a group of people from the Niger Delta who were in the room,” the Situation Room head said, describing events that unfolded publicly in the minutes after he received the SMS. When Jega opened proceedings on the morning of March 31, Orubebe had grabbed a microphone and launched into an 11-minute tirade accusing Jega of bias. “Mr. chairman, we have lost confidence in you,” he shouted, pushing away officials trying to make him surrender the microphone. “You are being very, very selective. You are partial,” he continued, surrounded by three or four supporters. “You are tribalistic. We cannot take it.” At this point, according to the Head of the Situation Room and the diplomat, Jega’s security details were approached by unidentified individuals telling them to stand down but they declined. “Some of the guards who had been guarding Jega for years demanded a written order,” the Head of the Situation Room said. Jega later rebuked Orubebe, saying, “Let us not disrupt a process that has ended peacefully,” he said as Orubebe slumped in his chair. “Mr. Orubebe, you are a former minister of the Federal Republic. You are a statesman in your own right. You should be careful about what you say or about what allegations you make,” he said. Orubebe later congratulated Buhari on Twitter, expressing his “apologies to fellow Nigerians.” Orubebe did not respond to requests by the news agency for comment on the details of the plot. INEC, said the news agency, also declined to comment and turned down requests for an interview with Jega, Reuters however said it found no evidence to suggest that Jonathan, who accepted defeat in the election, was involved in the plot. The Chief Press Secretary to the chairman of the commission, Kayode Idowu, told our correspondent that he was not aware of the alleged plot to kidnap Jega. Idowu said, “I think somebody is imagining here. The chairman was not aware of any such plan, he didn’t conduct any investigation to know that. He was not under such threat during or after the announcement.’’ http://www.punchng.com/news/revealed-plot-to-abduct-jega-during-presidential-poll/

With the release of the results of National Assembly elections held last Saturday by the INEC, indications have emerged that the South East Geo-Political Zone may have lost the opportunity to produce the next Senate President of Nigeria. The Zone did not vote for any candidate of the APC in the last election, thereby shutting out itself in the reckoning for such a post. From the results posted by the INEC, the South East neither returned any of its APC senators nor voted for any new candidate to emerge on the platform of the APC. Consequently, Senate President David Mark is said to be begging APC to give him the position. It was learnt that the non-availability of any ranking APC Senator from the region to take the slot of Senate President might compel APC to zone the slot to the North Central, where David Mark hails from. Mark would have emerged the best choice given his rich background and experience, his membership of the PDP, which will now be in the minority in the next Senate, knocks him out of the reckoning for the post. APC has won no fewer than 65 seats in the last NASS election pushing PDP with 44 Senators to the second position in the upper legislative chambers. But there was unconfirmed report on Wednesday that Mark was being pressured by political interests to defect to the APC after the inauguration of the National Assembly in order to retain his post. But it is not possible for any Senator to decamp to any other party until after being sworn in. A source told Vanguard: “The truth of the matter is that you cannot decamp to any party after election until you are sworn in. It is not an issue now and I don’t think that anybody should contemplate that at all and even the opposition party will not even welcome you. No way for Mark — APC chieftain But an APC chieftain has said that it was not possible to concede the Senate Presidency to Benue State after it had occupied the post for eight years through David Mark. The official said that there was no way APC would accept Mark as its Senate President since there were many qualified Senators from other states in the North Central to occupy the post. It was learnt that given the absence of any ranking APC Senator from the South East or South South, the APC would still retain the Senate Presidency in the North Central but pick from another state. Kwara State Senator, Dr. Bukola Saraki, is being considered for the top post. Yemi Osinbajo, vice-president-elect, has described the victory of his party in the presidential election as the handwork of God. Expressing appreciation to Nigerians for supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osinbajo said the incoming government will turn Nigeria around for the better. “I am very happy, God has done an awesome thing,” he told NAN. “We already have a manifesto which clearly says that we are determined to change this country and turn its direction around. “Our promise is to work every single day, determined to make life better for the average Nigerian.” He commended the electoral process but said there was need for improvement. “I think it was flexible enough to accommodate a lot of the issues and problems that came up,” he said. “There is a long way to go in getting the system to work perfectly.” He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat, saying such action demonstrated maturity and decency. “I think that will set an example which would perhaps provide some kind of guide to others as to what to do in situations such like that,” he said. “I think he provided a good example as to what to do when obviously you find out that you lost an election. “The right thing to do is to congratulate the victor and I think the President did the right thing.” Several hours before INEC made an official announcement of the winner, Jonathan placed a call through to Buhari to congratulate him. Anxious voters almost lynched electoral officials at Umunankwo/ Mputu ward in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State for arriving late to the polling unit. LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that the poll officials arrived the centre at about 12:30pm without result sheets for two polling units. One of the officials for the centre, Mr. Ignatius Onyejekwe, stated that he escaped the wrath of the voters along with other ad hoc staff by the whiskers. Narrating his ordeal to the electoral officer, he stated that the voters were angry because they could not find voting materials for two polling units there and the presiding officials. As at 3:30pm, INEC officials hadn’t arrived Obeagwe, Akili-Ogidi and Ogwuikpele communities in Ogbaru riverine area because of the difficult terrain owing to rain fall that occurred the previous night. The electoral officials were said to have refused entering a flying boat to access the three communities. Meanwhile, though the elections witnessed massive turnout of voters in the state, late commencement of accreditation of voters and malfunctioning of the card readers characterised the conduct of the polls in many centres in the state. In polling centres in different parts of the three senatorial zones of the state, hundreds of intending voters besieged the polling units as early as 7:30am but there were no INEC officials to attend to them. In some polling centres, electoral officials even arrived without some necessary polling materials. In many polling units in Aguata local government area, there were reports of large scale malfunctioning of the card readers and in some places there were no card readers at all. As at 10:48pm in Oraifite ward 3, Ekwusigo local government local government, card readers distributed to the polling units were not functional. Those distributed to Awo Central School polling unit, Oraifite were also not functional. Electoral officials told anxious voters at about 11:57am that if after one hour, solution did not come from their superiors in Awka, they will start accrediting them manually. Also, Ernest Eze, an intending voter at Umudim voting centre, Nnewi said INEC officials told them that the card readers were not working and that they were waiting for instruction from their superiors in Awka before they could resort to the use of manual accreditation, using the index INEC form. At about 11:10am, voters at Nawgu Ward Two, Dunukofia local government complained they could not undergo accreditation because card readers were not functioning. Similar situation was reported at Osumenyi ward 7, Nnewi-South LGA as at 11:37am. http://leadership.ng/news/421318/poll-officials-escape-lynching-in-anambra

Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari has charged President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on his security agencies to respect the two peace accords they signed, saying the Abuja Peace Accords must be worth their wordings. Buhari, who expressed concerns over recent developments in the country, in a press statement made available to journalists lamented that less than 24 hours after signing the accord, federal government security agencies and supporters of the president have attempted to drive members of the opposition underground in order to give the ruling party an upperhand. He said, “With less than 24 hours to the presidential elections, I call on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately call the errant security agencies to order, in the spirit of the peace accords. The president should make it clear that any security agent who engages in acts that are inimical to the success of the elections will face the full wrath of the law. “On Thursday, March 26th, President Goodluck Jonathan and I signed a new accord reinforcing our commitment to violence-free elections. “The new accord is a follow up to the Abuja Accord which we signed, along with nine other party leaders, on Jan. 14th 2015, to show our commitment to free, fair and credible elections in our dear country.” Buhari stated that on his part he takes the two accords very seriously, saying, “this has reflected in the issues-based campaign which I ran all through the period of electioneering campaign, despite the provocative and sleazy campaign directed at my person and my party. “But recent developments across the country, ahead of Saturday’s (today’s) elections, run against the contents and spirit of the peace accords. “For example, the ink with which we signed the new peace accord had barely dried when we started hearing reports of violence directed against members of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as glaring acts of harassment and intimidation being carried out against the opposition by security agents across the country. “Shots were fired at the convoy of the director general of my campaign organization, His Excellency Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, in Rumuolumeni, Obio Akpor area of Port Harcourt, a few hours after the second peace accord was signed, leaving two persons injured. “I do hope this is not a confirmation of the information reaching my party that some notorious security agents have been deployed to Port Harcourt to restrict the movement of Gov. Amaechi.” The APC flag bearer said in Ondo State, a serving APC member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Eniolorunda Omosule, was arrested and detained by the police for no reason other than to keep him away until after elections. He said he was abreast of reports of an alleged meeting in Ibadan between the commissioners of police in the southwest and PDP officials. http://leadership.ng/news/420752/buhari-to-jonathan-tell-your-security-agencies-to-respect-our-accord

Nigeria’s wartime leader, Yakubu Gowon, a retired general, has accused Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, who led eastern Nigeria in an unsuccessful secession bid in 1967, of misrepresenting the Aburi Accord to Nigerians. The accord was reached at a meeting held between January 4-5, 1967, in Aburi, a Ghanaian town, between delegates of the federal military government and the now defunct eastern region as part of efforts to prevent the looming civil war in the aftermath of the 1966 military coups. Ojukwu, then a colonel and governor of the eastern region, had returned from Aburi announcing that it had been agreed that the country should adopt confederalism — a political system in which every region would essentially be a country on its own with only a symbolic national government. But speaking on Friday at the launch of a four-part biography on President Goodluck Jonathan, Gowon said he had to correct an impression created in the book by the author, Charles Imokhai, a reverend father. Gowon said Ojukwu’s statement on the Aburi Accord was contrary to what was discussed. He said: “I have seen that you (Imokhai) have gone back in history in your research when Ojukwu and myself had the Aburi Accord. “I was fascinated by that because I can assure you that that meeting was to break the ice and for all of us, the military leaders at the time, be allowed to be able to agree to be discussing our problems in Nigeria and to solve them. “What happened to us at Aburi was that I couldn’t make it down (to Nigeria) because I was unfortunately down with a fever. “Ojukwu got back (before me) and made a statement and that wasn’t what we discussed and that was the beginning of the misunderstanding. “Since you presented that we had a meeting, I thought I should make that comment and to correct that.” Nigeria eventually went to war in May of that year after different interpretations of the Aburi Accord and failed peace moves. Ojukwu died in November 2011. Read more at: http://www.thecable.ng/gowon-ojukwu-misinformed-nigerians-aburi-accord | TheCable

The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians. Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism. The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project. Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.” The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered. Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation. He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.” The Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in his remarks at the event said that the Rivers State Government had been facing a decline in support from the Federal Government owing to the political differences between him and President Goodluck Jonathan. Amaechi, who was represented at the occasion by a former governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria in Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), wondered why Jonathan would chose to make the state suffer, despite his campaign of transformation. He said recent documentaries against a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu , would not affect the performance of the party at the polls, urging those peddling lies about the APC to desist from it. The first Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig. Gen. Mobolaji Johnson (retd.) commended the leadership legacies of Jakande, saying he laid a solid foundation for development in Lagos State. The author of the book, Olaosebikan, said he was motivated to write about Jakande in 1994 after he met the former governor. He said that his findings as recorded in the book showed that Buhari did not abort the metroline project as being claimed but that ‘certain forces’ terminated the project. http://www.punchng.com/news/cancelling-metroline-a-major-mistake-jakande/

y Ben Agande, Abuja. President Goodluck Jonathan Friday handed out N75 million (N5million each) as well as employment letters to families of those who lost their lives in the botched immigration recruitment exercise last year. President Jonathan’s gesture was in fulfillment of his promise that three members each from the families of those who lost their lives would be compensated. *Immigration The event which took place at the press briefing room of the presidential Villa had in attendance the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro as well as the Comptroller General of Immigration, David Paradang, the supervising Minister of Information, Edem Duke and other government officials. Each of the families of the deceased, was handed a cheque of five million naira each, while three family members were each given employment letters. President Jonathan in a brief remark after handing over the cheques and employment letters promised that such incidence would not repeat itself again. ” I promise this country that such will not happen again. This will be the last of such things” he emphasised. He said the monies given to the families of the deceased should not be seen as compensation because it cannot replace the lives lost. The Comptroller General of the Immigration Service, David Paradang told journalists that out of the 45 candidates ten had to be replaced because they did not meet the criteria of the service. He explained that some of them were shorter than required, overweight or over aged adding that the families of the ten have been asked to bring replacement for the slots. He noted that some of them who are graduates were employed as Assistant Superintendent, those with National Certificate of Education (NCE) were employed as Assistant Inspectors while those with the West African school certificate (WASC) were employed as Immigration Officers 3. The service has currently resumed the employment exercise. Paradang said the service intends to recruit a total of 2,000 officers less the already slated 45 slots. Minister of Interior, Abba Moro said the government accepts the incident as an act that was not planned for. He said those wounded in the exercise will not be forgotten adding that they will be included in the second phase recruitment which is ongoing till May. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/immigration-recruitment-tragedy-families-of-deceased-get-n75m-employment-letters/
