i expected him to be more cautious with his response.Agreed, but don't you think the police officer acted below expectation? Yes he came there because a curious neighbour tipped him off, but he was sufficiently satisfied that the professor is not a burglar, yet proceeded to arrest him for disorderly conduct, making it look like he wanted to arrest the prof. at all costs. I think that was what drew the ire of president Obama |

The trio:
|
Three characters, one event, one comment and the whole place is agog with accusations and counter accusations. Back to the story briefly; A Black man [ I hate to use colours to describe humans] Henry Louis Gates, who is a Harvard professor, wanted to enter his own house. The door did not open as quick as he wanted so he forced his way in. Someone alerted the police. Enter a Whiteman, James Crowley, a police officer. The professor could not understand why someone will question him for entering his own house, whichever way he chooses, probably wondering 'is it because I am Black?' The White officer thought the man was rude and arrested him for disorderly conduct . The matter got to the attention of President Barak Obama. He said the police acted stupidly, which I believe is a fair assessment. Now they say Mr Presidents comment smack of racial bias. The noise was all over the place. To cool-u temper, Mr president has invited the two parties to the White House to drink beer. Pray, did President Obama act wrongly in this matter, dunno. What do you say? |
For me, that will be The Trial by Franz Kafka. Funny and full of unresolved and intriguing suspense! At the end, you wonder if its a novel or just someone trying to recollect so many dreams of Josef K the central character. It was after reading commentaries on it that the full message dawned. The other one is Lives Of The Poets by E.L Doctorow. Initially I thought it will offer a glimpse into the lives of some famous poets. Turns out to be a successful mix of creativity, imagination and logic woven into each other. Glad I read it through! |

Late to this thread, Newdeal here from Dartfod, |
My take on this? Its scriptural [Exodus 23:19, Proverbs 3:9, Leviticus 2:14, etc] But there is a caveat here: If you believe in it, go ahead and give, it will produce good result for you. If you do not believe it, please dont give, whatever you do for God or even for man that is not borne out of inner conviction is a wasteful exercise. |
A nun in the convent walked into the bathroom where mother superior was taking a shower. “The BLINDS man is here to see you, he seems to be in a haste” she says to mother Superior. “Well, if he is a blind man, then it does not matter if I’m in the shower. Send him in.” The blind man walks into the bathroom, and mother superior starts to encourage him on the need to be thankfull to God in any situation. She goes on and on and 10 minutes later the man interrupts: “That’s nice, madam. Where do you want me to put the window blinds? |
spikedcylinder:typical naija spirit, chop give me turn, ![]() The ideal? we'll get there one day! |
oh my GOD, where was i all these while? @poster God bless you one hundred times every second! I dare say those pictures you posted only revealed a speck of the entire picture. Many of us living here are afraid, [naahh, ashamed rather] of revealing the squalor in which we live, so as not to remove the last vestige of ''borrowed pride'' we parade in the name of ''living abroad''. People hear fairy tales of ''developed nations'' and, pronto! they want to come over by all means without a clear plan of what they want to come and do. So they fall prey to all kinds of dehumanising situations that only God can extricte them from. I accept that considerably, condition of living here is better than what obtains in naija [light, transport & communication system, housing etc] but these things are not accesible to just anybody. Recently, to get a new handset from Carphone Warehouse for instance, I had to present my passport. Now how many Nigerians here can do that without risking deportation? To those Naijabrits who are working themselves into a frenzy defending ''Queensland'' i can only say you missed the point of the post! To conclude the truth is this: U.K [or any other developed nation for that matter] is not a paradise, can never be. If you want to come here, make sure you know what you are coming for and avoid cutting corners to come otherwise you will pay dearly for it, as so many are doing here. |
