CultureRe: Are There Any Places Of Historical Interest In Your Town ? by newdeal(m): 8:10pm On Jul 05, 2011
Why do we travel to London to look at old buildings built by dead people who don't mean anything to us ? There are a lot of places which can enrich our knowledge about us and our own culture
There are many places of historical interest in Nigeria no doubt but how secured and well regulated are they for interested tourists, especially those who do not have private body-guards?
Earlier this year for instance I was in Lagos and visited one of the beaches with a friend and we had to contend with the nuisance of all kinds of fees at road-blocks mounted by hemp-smoking touts who also double as beggars, so desperate they will stop at nothing to extract money from patrons they considered rich.

Meanwhile, here, I can just go to Brighton Beach, London Eye or any other place of interest, pay for any facility I want to use and just relax and enjoy myself without any fear of harassment- see the difference? We take too many things for granted in naija

@ Jarus
But whatever the case, Nairaland will soon become the go-to for policy evaluation discourses in Nigeria, if well managed.
Well said, the site is already a force to reckon with and will continue to be as long as the owner does not allow it to lose credibility, so long as he does not compromise himself with the establishment in a bid to 'make it'

At times like these, my respect for late chief Gani Fawehinmi soars to the high heavens, so far the only Nigerian critic who courageously stood by his convictions to the very end, not these bunch of self serving opportunists and pseudo-intellectuals who cannot resist the whiff of 'mints' regardless of the source.
PoliticsRe: Kano State Owes N110 Billion by newdeal(m): 6:24pm On May 31, 2011
Debts in Kano, Ogun, Lagos, etc the list goes on and on!

The very, very, very sad thing is not even the debt left in themselves but the fact that it is only when the leader leaves office that one begin to get all these things. While they are in office, all we hear are tales of wonders they are performing.

Until the process of governance becomes transparent and the FOI Bill is passed and is rigorously implemented across board, incidences like the above will never cease from our polity.

I wonder how much debt will be left by my state Governor when he eventually leaves, he just won a second term in office
TravelRe: The Life Of An Ordinary Nigerian Student In The United Kingdom by newdeal(m): 6:05pm On May 31, 2011
With the recently announced school fees regime, I wonder why someone will want to leave naija to come here without carefully weighing all the pros and cons.

Ultimately, the choice in this matter lies with the individual involved, but I think there is need for a lot of orientation for our people who want to come over for one thing or the other, because the reality is far from the juicy tales being bandied about by fantacists and the various 'visa agents'. Such tales have lured so many to fly out of the country, without proper planning through all kinds of illegitimate routes to come and reduce themselves to subhhumans in jand.

Last Friday [27th] around 8pm, a young man [of African descent, going by his complexion]got knocked down by a reckless driver in Lewisham, he was badly injured and bleeding but when passers-by made attempt to call ambulance, the guy got up and ran away into the night, with all the pains and bruises. The only explanation for that kind of strange behaviour will be that 'his legs are not fully on ground here'.

Its so sad and painful the things we put ourselves into in the name of going abroad!!

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Did Mourinho Instruct His Players To Get Red Cards? by newdeal(op): 10:09pm On Nov 30, 2010
Latest on this saga;

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been fined by Uefa and banned for two Champions League matches, the second of which is suspended for three years.

Along with Real players Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos, Mourinho was found guilty of improper conduct relating to the pair's recent dismissals against Ajax.

Alonso and Ramos were also fined by European football's governing body.
Mourinho - who had denied the allegations - was fined £33,500 for appearing to instruct Alonso and Ramos to attempt to receive strategic second yellow cards in last week's 4-0 win at Ajax.

They were both sent from the field for time-wasting, meaning they would be banned from group G winners Real's next match against Auxerre - which is effectively meaningless - but then be free to start the Champions League last 16 knockout round without suspension.

Alonso and Ramos were fined £16,700 for their part in the incident, while goalkeeper Iker Casillas and his reserve Jerzy Dudek were also hit financially after being captured on television apparently passing messages to them from the dugout.

Portuguese coach Mourinho will only be suspended for the second match if he is again found guilty of improper conduct in the next three years.

An appeal may be lodged against the full ruling within three days.

When Mourinho coached Chelsea, Uefa banned him from the touchline for two matches in 2005 after he accused Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard of visiting Swedish referee Anders Frisk at half time.

I am not a fan of either team, but lets face it, Barca outplayed RM in every department of this game, this is football at its best!! safe for the many yellow cards and that childish outburst against Pep Guadiola by Ronaldo (who else)

& just as i was typing Barca scored the fifth!!

Oh Carvalio, that was a stupid challenge!! deservedly sent off!!
Game ends, the special one well humiliated in this one!!

@ Ajanlekoko,
Jose would probably get away with it anyway.
The last may not have been heard yet, reports yesterday had it that the coach and 4 of his players involved in this 'tactics' have been charged by UEFA for improper conduct following an investigation into the event. Mourinho is being accused of instructing Alonso and Ramos to pick up the red cards, while goal-keeper Iker Casillas and one other player Jerzy Dudec were charged for allegedly relaying the coach's instructions. As expected, 'the special one' has denied the charges.

when making laws u close the gaps for exploitation.
Very true there!
---and when you discover loopholes in the implementation of a particular law, as we see in this case, then you amend as appropriate, otherwise some 'smart ones' will just bring this beautiful game down before anyone knows it

@emyworld
your point is well understood and that is what some RM fans do not want to admit. Its true no one was injured, but how far should such 'tactics' be allowed in footbal, taking into account its overal impact on the game. Ghana missed a history-making opportunity at the last world cup, courtesy of the theatrics of suarez! I like my football raw, with a very minimal amount of intrigues, (if there must be).

I had a heated debate on a forum a while ago with a fellow, (obviously a Real Madrid fan) over what happened in the recent Champions League match between Real Madrid and Ajax. Ajax fell by 4-0 to the Spannish giant, but curiously, towards the end, Alonso and Ramos got sent off in quick succession for similar offences.

For those who did not watch the match, see this footage and lets hear your take, bearing in mind that red cards for the two will ensure they will still be available for the next crucial phase of the competition, the knock-out stage, they will only miss match day 6!!.

Virtually, any vacancy that is announced in Nigeria, you see this kind of scenario and anytime I see things like this, I get terribly annoyed, especially with young Nigerians abroad who still fraudulently maintain their names on the payrolls of various ministries to collect salaries they do not merit. I know quiet a handful folks who were working in the public sector, then came over for one thing or another without resigning, I wonder how can someone with conscience feel comfortable claiming unmerited salary when you know it is affecting others so badly. For all I know, even an unskilled cleaner here don't go through this kind of stress to earn his/her daily bread. Yet anytime we talk about Nigerian problem, we are quick to focus only on the likes of Iboris, IBB, etc.

How I wish I can do something more than talking about issues like this
PoliticsRe: I Am A Victim Of June 12 -IBB Says In Exclusive Interview by newdeal(m): 6:54pm On Nov 19, 2010
People like IBB will continue to assault the nation's collective psyche, will continue to flaunt their worm-infested relevance over the populace because of the kind of environment we have created for ourselves in Nigeria. His coming out to contest at all, [for whatever reason] is enough despoil already, and now his recent indulgences, organised media interviews, which all amount to shoddy, convoluted and kindergatten attempt to rationalise his years of selfish indulgence foisted on the country with his cabal of heartless arsonists. Only fools can be fooled by his like.

All said and done, God is not sleeping, let him continue filling his cup of iniquity all over the place with his claims to innocence over events he should be remorseful for, there is always a day of reckoning for the unrepentant, there is always a Higher Power that hands out impartial judgements to those whose cups are filled!

for all those who are of the opinion that we have so many churches and so many men of God conducting so many prayer programs,
yet the country has not not improved.

Have you also taken time to consider this other option;

that things would have been worse if not for the prayers of well-meaning Nigerians and friends of Nigeria?
Christianity EtcRe: Have You Prayed For Nigeria Today? by newdeal(m): 1:53pm On Oct 29, 2010
I am part of the Nigeria Pray project here and the phrase above have been my signature since then, am glad the consciousness is spreading. I

I use to be of the opinion that praying for a country like Nigeria where most of us deliberately chose the wrong and selfish ways of doing things most times  is like pouring water into a basket and expecting it to store the water. But now I know better. The amount of time we spend bashing our country in various facets can be better deployed not just praying for, but taking positive actions wherever we find ourselves, no matter how little, to improve our collective lot.

Believe it or not, all that we can see [tangible and intangible] originated from a realm we cannot see, and prayer, in its various modes and formats grants access to that realm,  even the forces of evil know this truth and are very adept at manipulating it. Some results of our prayers might be slow in coming, some might come in tiny bits and pieces, and some might not even  come in our lifetime, but prayer is never an idle exercise!

This account reminds me of a joke I heard way back from an ex-naval officer:

3 officers of the Army, Navy & Police were sent to go and get a live rat from the bush as part of a joint training exercise. The Naval officer went first and after a few hours, he came back with a live rat. Then the Army officer went into the bush and soon emerged with a rat that was barely alive due to rough handling! The Police Officer went in last. The people waited and waited. Finally, he emerged holding one strange creature which he told everybody was a rat! Of course nobody believed him, so he told them to ask the creature what animal it is and when they did, it replied over and over; 'i am a rat', 'i am a rat'

@OP

I fail to grasp the point you are trying to make, by your own admission, you overstayed, which is a breach of UK Immigration Statute [even if it is for 1 day] and you you were rightly hounded. When I saw the title, I thought you were going to give readers some eye-opening shoddy details of goings on there, or how you were ill-treated because of who you are, but all we see is some logic that is neither here nor there, but given the situation you are in, one can understand the anger and the outburst.

Altogether, its unfortunate what befell you because there are thousands [yes thousands] who are using false identity to work here and nothing has happened to them. I even know of a fellow who was caught for similar offence, detained and later left off the hook recently without any charge.

Whatever the outcome of the case, pls cheer up, leaving UK is not the end of the world, you sound too brilliant to be limited by any environment, naija or elsewhere!
