Politics › Judging Willie Obiano And His Footprint On Infrastructure Transcends Anambra by nex(op): 7:32am On Oct 31, 2017
Vision, strategy and courage are some of the important qualities that help define quality leadership, often transforming a leader into a statesman in his/her chosen area of endeavour, and such is the case of Willie Obiano in Anambra State.

While vision informs strategy, courage ensures action or implementation in a manner akin to childbirth and nurture. Men do not become great by nature, greatness is only attained by nurture.

As the November 18, 2017 date fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Anambra State gubernatorial election draws near, it would be nice to juxtapose the achievements of the incumbent governor, HE Willie Obiano and his predecessor, Peter Obi on the area of infrastructure.

The desire to discuss infrastructure is because it’s one thing, which like education and security impacts on everyone, irrespective of social or economic status, religious, political or tribal inclination. As they say, when the rain falls, it does not fall on one man’s house. These three elements can make or mar, incapacitate or empower, depending on what the government of the day is able to do about them.

The objective here is to make an informed contribution as one in the know and to place things in proper perspective. If it guides the electorate to making the right decision at the forthcoming gubernatorial election, so be it.

But how does one compare three and half years with eight years? Maybe a click at the buttons of vision, strategy and courage will help. It is also good to note that one of the factors fueling popular agitation pan-Nigeria is poor infrastructure, particularly road network. It has become one of the defining factors of urban and rural areas in present day Nigeria.

The objective here is to make an informed contribution as one in the know and to place things in proper perspective. If it guides the electorate to making the right decision at the forthcoming gubernatorial election, so be it.

The major pain of Ndi Igbo has been how to carry on commerce in a conducive atmosphere. This is partly why the clamour for the second Niger Bridge has become an important political gimmick that leading political office seekers are clinging onto to deceive the populace and present themselves as pro-people. Politicians tell themselves, ‘just promise the second Niger Bridge and you have their votes.’

Political analysts see the importance of this piece of infrastructure in the composite socioeconomic benefits the people could derive therefrom, as being of gargantuan proportions.

This makes Obiano’s vision to deliver an Airport City for Anambra a worthy one. The Airport Project is being perceived as a socioeconomic catalyst, capable of reverberating across the southeast and even beyond, with major impacts expected in the areas of employment creation, commerce (local and international), localization of industries which would include oil and gas. This could only be coming from a visionary and strategic leader.

                                     Umueri Airport City Project

A consideration of how long it took the Federal Government of Nigeria to make a move, largely seen as political and lip-service on the second Niger Bridge project will give an insight into what Obiano’s vision and courage to initiate an Airport City in Anambra, so soon after becoming Governor, means to Ndi Igbo. I think that this vision and the strategic execution are some of the things that rank Obiano as a visionary leader.

The most visionary card played by Obi in his eight-year tenure that can be said to have the potential to rub-off on the socioeconomic status of Anambra Stare like the Airport City is the Ikemba Square that leads into Onitsha from the Niger Bridge. Not being a government man, I cannot imagine the cost of the Ikemba Square, but cost alone does not determine value.

Citizens are quick to point out the iconic landscaping, decorative flyovers and footbridges that dot several commercial centres in Anambra State, particularly Awka, the state capital. People can hardly drive through Awka without beholding the beauty of the city as Obiano’s impact on infrastructure is hard not to notice. This is a legacy, particularly given how long it took to put the befitting structures in place and the quality of finishing that have helped to bestow on Awka a unique identity and dignity as a state capital.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Wilie-Obiano-Anambra-Security-Equipment.jpg?w=552

To my mind, these are some of the things Obiano has done to transform Anambra into a first-choice investment destination and hub of commercial activities in Nigeria and by extension, West Africa.

Who would argue that with a memorandum of understanding already executed with the partners on the Airport City Project, namely, Orient Petroleum Resources Limited and Elite International Investment Limited for the $5 billion project, to be sited at Umueri, Anambra East Local Government, it shows that Obiano has achieved in months what Obi could not achieve in years? The joy and optimism which have greeted the project reflect how well it is accepted by the people.

Another point of commendation, which shows vision and strategy is the ability to attract partners. Getting partners from China, a country whose economic prowess is world-dominant for a State project is no mean feat. It flows that the more visionary and strategic a leader is, the easier it would be for him/her to attract the best for his/his people.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Willie-Obiano-Police-Cars.jpg?w=960

Igwe Cyril Enweze, Chairman, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA) aptly voiced it out this way, “the project would promote rapid urbanisation and increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Anambra State.”

Whereas Obi tried to open up some rural roads during his eight-year reign, most of the roads constructed by Obi have all carved-in, because they were done without adequate drainages. What Obiano has done is to ensure value for spend by delivering roads with good drainages. Those who know the topography of Anambra State will understand what a difference this can make. So Obiano’s roads can last 10 years before needing repairs but Obi’s caved in months after construction as the rains came. This is why Obiano embarked on operation “zero pot holes” to ensure Obi’s failing roads are fixed but this is what happens when a leader is focused more on cost cutting than value creating.

This has become imperative because it is palpable that a lot of Ndi Igbo share the opinion that if their kin that occupied top political positions since the return of democracy in 1999 had delivered the so called dividends of democracy to the southeast, the current agitation for sovereignty would probably not have surfaced. I add that top performance by governors in particular would have encouraged the Federal Government of Nigeria and compelled her to seek relevance in the southeast by delivering value to Ndi Igbo. I stand to be corrected.

https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Aroma-Bridge-built-ByWillie-Obiano-in-Anabra-State-3.jpg?resize=1024%2C576

This is why my thoughts at this time revolve around vision, strategy and courage as the backbone for quality leadership. If those who led (were elected into political positions; particularly the executive governors) in Igboland had over the years shown themselves visionaries, backed with strategic and courageous execution, projects like the Airport City powered by the Anambra Airport Infrastructure Company Limited would have sprung up in two or three places in Igboland before now and would have helped redefine the flow of commercial activities in Nigeria, thereby forcing the Federal Government to chase the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) with back-up developmental projects. Economists talk of localisation of industries; probably this would come through as socioeconomic concentration.

It is important to note that Obiano has built bridges to connect the agric and oil and gas zones of the state to the mainland. This presents a platform to drive even further economic growth. His current focus on economic growth helped protect the state from the recession that ravaged the country in the past one year.

Inflow of Domestic direct investments (DDIs) helped infuse funds, jobs and economic activities into the state in the past 3 years such that its GDP grew at 14 to 15 % in the first 2 years and 1% in the last year at a time when the Nigerian economy grew at 6 to 7 and% and declined by about 1%. So Anambra was recession proof. Unlike what would have happened in the previous administration when instead of paying contractors, money was saved and the contractors pauperized, thus starving the economy of funds required to drive growth.

To my mind, vision, strategy and courage that Obiano exudes will always prevail over emotions and sentiments the previous Governor rode on to power and sadly seeks to use in picking another occupant for the Anambra State Government House, Awka. I am optimistic that Ndi Anambra can easily discern why Obiano’s indelible footprints on infrastructure have the potential to traverse the entire southeast.

Sports › Niger Tornadoes And Akwa United Battle For AITEO Cup 2017 At Agege Stadium Lagos by nex(op): 8:57am On Oct 13, 2017
Positive and edifying history will be made on Sunday when Niger Tornadoes FC and Akwa United clash at the Agege Stadium for the right to be the team to hoist the glittering AITEO Cup 2017 which is the first ever.

For the umpteenth time, change was effected in the name of the oldest competition in the land in June this year when Nigeria’s leading energy solutions company, AITEO Group, signed a multi –million naira partnership agreement with the Nigeria Football Federation to take over a championship that had been known as Governor’s Cup, Challenge Cup, FA Cup and Federation Cup in its 72 –year history.

AITEO’s money and result –oriented activation strategy has to a large extent restored the well –known glamour of the competition, with a modern streak added to it, and Sunday’s Finale at a venue nicknamed The Soccer Temple will draw the curtain on a two –month long contest that has fully lived up to the name.

A full house is expected at The Soccer Temple to witness a potentially –explosive encounter between two teams gunning to win Nigeria’s oldest competition for the second time.

Tornadoes, who pipped Enugu Rangers 1-0 for their only diadem in 2000, shoved Cup holders FC IfeanyiUbah out of the race at the semi final stage, winning 4-3 on aggregate.

Akwa United, who won in 2015 after edging Lobi Stars 2-1, count eight –time winners Shooting Stars of Ibadan among their victims in this year’s competition.

Apart from pride and desire for one of the most attractive trophies in world football, a princely sum of N25 million awaits the conquerors in Sunday’s battle; the loser to go home with N10 million.

There is also a further motivation of continental football, as the winner will take Nigeria’s second slot in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup competition.

In the women’s event, Cup holders Rivers Angels are standing by for one of Ibom Angels of Uyo and Abia Angels of Umuahia for their own Finale in Jos on Wednesday, 18th October, and a sum of N10 million is ready for the winner of that match; the loser to go home with half that amount.

The guest list for Sunday’s epoch has Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Youth and Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, CAF President Ahmad, his three vice presidents Kwesi Nyantakyi, Omari Selemani and Fouzi Lekjaa, CAF Emergency Committee members Musa Bility and Souleiman Waberi, FIFA Council member Hany Abo Rida, NFF President Amaju Pinnick (also member of the CAF Emergency Committee), Members of the NFF Executive Committee and NFF Management, Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr and Members of the Lagos State Executive Council.

Politics › The Anambra State Governorship Elections: Between Peter Obi And Willie Obiano by nex(op): 6:35pm On Oct 11, 2017
Democracy places the onus of choice upon the electorates. This explains why power, in a true democracy belongs in the ballot box; where those who qualified and desire to, exercise their choice to elect people into offices. This is the case of the Anambra State governorship elections.

Perhaps, this is why it is typical of politicians to employ every imaginable tactic to win the electorates over. They call it campaign. Sadly, this is often mere drama, acted out to sway, even by deceit and in Nigeria through purchase. Yes, voting can be transactional in Nigeria, but even then the actors have to be smart, else the bubble will burst.

The tendency of politicians to pull the wool over the eyes of the people demands caution and there is a need for people to read between the lines when being addressed by those soliciting to be elected into political positions. This is when Bob Marley’s assertion in one of his songs that “you can fool some people sometimes, but you can’t fool all the people all the time,” will not just prove accurate but help the people make the right choices.

Are Peter Obi And Willie Obiano Contesting Against Each Other?

This brings us to the two leading gladiators in the race to the government house of Anambra State, the incumbent governor Willie Obiano for himself and known for his boldness and audacity and Peter Obi known for his minimalism who is now fronting for Oseloka Obaze of the PDP.

The gubernatorial election is billed for November 18, 2017 according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the gladiators would stop at nothing to get the people thumbprint them or their preferred candidates into office. In this race the incumbent governor of Anambra State, HE Willie Obiano and the man he succeeded in office, Peter Obi remain the leading gladiators. One for himself and the other a godfather standing up someone he seeks to ‘hoist’ on the people.

For starters, political watchers are concerned that Obi is working so hard to pulldown the house he laid the foundation of, given his role in Obiano succeeding him as governor of Anambra State. But those who know Obi are not surprised. They see Obi as a self-righteous man, which is why his tenure as governor of the state is typified with micromanagement, which to an extent stagnated the state, though his admirers claim it led to stability in the state.

Peter Obi's Expectations From Willie Obiano

Obi got at least 3 times per month from the Federal Government more than Obiano has made during his tenure yet Obi was very minimalist in what he did for his people and decided to keep money in savings…money which if well used should have generated a lot more than the investments in which he saved them.

The accolade of "stabilist" only creeps into political analyses because of the political turmoil that preceded Obi’s ascension to the office as governor of Anambra State. Obi definitely profited from the turbulence in the ranks of the rival political party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, with leading gladiators of the PDP helping to destroy themselves in favour of Obi.

Obiano came into office at a time that Ndi Anambra could think clearly and place expectations, beyond mere political sanity at the table of their governor. And he has delivered by using professionals, as against Obi’s micromanagement style. Two areas that showcase the contrast in these two gladiators are in the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR and road construction. Obi initially moved to grow IGR by using professionals and was able to move the monthly IGR up from N500m to one billion.

For reasons best known to him, he removed the key actors that assisted grow the IGR figures and installed someone he could micromanage and it fell back to N500m monthly. Political watchers believe that this was to create moles for Obi and his cronies to syphon public funds, particularly as the persons under whose watch the shortfall was recorded did not get any reprimand or encouragement to improve.

https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Anambra-State-Governorship-Elections-Between-Peter-Obi-And-Willie-Obiano.jpg?resize=960%2C640

But Obiano would have none of that, so he appointed professionals, people well versed in the revenue generation and management, the result is that the state’s IGR has spiralled from N500m to over N1.5billion monthly. Tongues are now wagging that Obi is feeling that the man he brought to ‘come and chop’ is outshining him, so would stop at nothing to frustrate his winning a second term in office.
Beyond that, it would appear though that Obi is just being a typical politician. How does one explain his unfaithfulness to All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA that helped him to power? This show of unstable character is one that the Igbo people in general still bleed about and those now counting on Obi to help them to ‘dethrone’ Obiano would find the political baggage too heavy.
Whereas Obiano’s patriotism and faithfulness have seen him remain steadfast with Ndi Anambra and APGA despite the pressure from the so called federal might are reasons that endear him to Ndi Igbo generally and Anambra electorates in particular.

Peter Obi And His Dream Of Being The Tinubu Of Anambra

Obi’s tendency for stifling instead of growing is seen in the fact that he had the same opportunities that the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, but while Tinubu chose to build political blocks around the southwest, which he has grown into a political empire, Obi would rather focus on Anambra as if it was his kitchen, where strangers should not stray-in. His focus on himself instead of common good is one that well-meaning Igbo people feel sad about till this day. Political watchers maintain it will count in the coming elections.

This is where pundits are quick to commend Obiano for holding true to his political principles unlike Obi who Ndi Igbo look at as having betrayed the Igbo nation by seeking personal political gains in an unscrupulous manner. So many are quick to note that Obi demonstrates fragility while Obiano represents strength of character in the true Igbo sense.

Anambra people also rue the fact that while Obi used religious sentiments to hoodwink them, Obiano has come true with simple honesty and professionalism. This is seen in the area of infrastructural provision in the state.

All the roads constructed under Obi’s watch are without drainages because he personally supervised it and might have been taken advantage of by the contractors but all the ones constructed by Obiano are well planned and executed with professional supervision ensuring that Ndi Anambra are not shortchanged in anywhere.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Anambra-State-Governorship-Elections-Between-Peter-Obi-And-Willie-Obiano-2-1.jpg?resize=678%2C381

Other areas where the contrasting personality brand profiles of Obi and Obiano leave Ndi Anambra with an easy choice include education, safety and security, economy, transportation, etc. Under Obiano, Anambra State has witnessed massive transformation in the education sector leading to WAEC analyses of students with up to five-credit passes at the senior school certificate examinations showing a steady growth from 60% in 2013 to over 75% in 2017 for Anambra students.

Perhaps what Ndi Anambra would find more ridiculous is that Obi’s penchant for falsehood has seen him taking them for granted. Following his micromanagement of the state, Obi was able to cart away state’s funds in a big bus.

Agents of Peter Obi were arrested on their way to Lagos in a celebrated case of money laundry which many are convinced helped deplete the state’s funds. They say every day is for the thief but one day is for the owner of the house. One wonders if this was the only time Obi sent money to Lagos by bus instead of paying same into his bank Fidelity Bank for proper tracking.

Politicians would not like to hear this, but the most damaging aspect of Obi’s waning personality brand profile is his being economical with the truth. For instance, on his handover notes he claimed to have left N75bn whereas he left just N9bn and some bonds he saved by denying contractors their payments.

He had left nearly 150bn naira of bills from contractors who had done some roads and instead of paying them he bought some investment notes so that he will claim to have saved money. The rest were in the forms of aged investments which were handed over from the then east central state. Imagine claiming a 30 year asset is something he generated and handed over to WIllie.

His claim to have also left $156bn cash also insults human intelligence, as such money being in existence would have amounted to N26.4 trillion at an exchange rate of N150/$ then. That would have meant that Anambra State had more money than Nigeria at that time! The desperation to tell lies is legendary. Campaign of falsehood at its highest just to get back in charge of the treasury. Anambra state government probably is his business.
It is in the same manner that the Obi camp goes around peddling falsehood that a hotel project that Obiano’s professional disposition has taken to 90% completion under a PPP arrangement with Golden Tulip has been abandoned.

The commissioning of the project scheduled for first quarter of 2018 will shame them, just as the pragmatic position of Ndi Anambra voters will do come November 18, 2017. Obiano has found private sector expertise and money to complete this project in Agulu, Obi’s village.
In all of these, his well lubricated and funded political vuvuzelas or trumpeters are helping him to misrepresent truths with a view to getting Ndi Anambra to vote against themselves by voting for his preferred candidate.

Sadly what this would mean is that whoever he hoists on the people would have to subject himself or herself to Obi’s micromanagement or be replaced with another of his errand boys at the next general gubernatorial elections.

These trumpeters explain why Ndi Anambra are toiling to place Obi’s selfishness and Obiano’s professionalism in proper perspective as well contrast Obi’s penchant to do as little as he can and save the rest while Obiano will always do more with less by bringing in other people’s money.

Health › NCDC Confirms Monkeypox In Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom Ogun And Ekiti by nex(op): 6:56am On Oct 10, 2017
Nigeria’s National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC says other cases of the monkeypox virus have been recorded in seven states. The states are Bayelsa, Rivers, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun and Cross River states.

According to a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, signed by NCDC Chief Executive Officer, Chikwe Ihekweazu the total number of suspected cases so far is 31 across 7 States and samples have been collected from each suspected case for laboratory confirmation.

Monkey Pox Strikes Bayelsa State - 11 people Quarantined

” So far, there have been no deaths recorded. It is unlikely that many of the suspected cases are actually monkeypox, but all are being investigated”.

“All the suspected cases are currently receiving appropriate medical care, and the patients are all improving clinically in their various States. The Federal Ministry of Health through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is supporting the affected States to ensure the outbreak is brought under control and to limit further spread.”

“NCDC has activated an Emergency Operation Centre to coordinate the outbreak investigation and response across the affected States.”the statement said

The EOC is currently supporting State Ministries of Health in their response to the outbreak through active case finding, epidemiological investigation and contact tracing. Measures have been put in place to ensure effective sample collection and testing to enable laboratory confirmation. Risk communication activities have been heightened to advise the public on preventive measures. All 36 States and the FCT have been notified for preparedness.

It is important to be reminded that monkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease with symptoms in humans similar to those seen in smallpox patients, but much less severe and with a low fatality rate.

Transmission is via contact with infected animal, human, or contaminated materials. Animal-to-human transmission occurs through bite or scratch from animals and bush meat preparation. It can also be transmitted from one person to another.

Human-to-human transmission occurs through respiratory droplets, contact with infected persons or contaminated materials. Control measures include isolation of suspected or confirmed cases, strict adherence to universal precautions, especially frequent handwashing with soap and water, and use of personal protective equipment.

Signs and symptoms include fever, headache, body pain, malaise, lymphadenopathy (enlargement of glands), sore throat, the characteristic generalized vesicular rash. The rashes might last between two to four weeks. Monkeypox is self-limiting, which means patients tend to recover with time. However, supportive care and management of condition is required and mostly successful.

Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu emphasizes that “Nigerians are once advised to remain calm, avoid self-medication and report any suspected case to the nearest health facility. Public health authorities across the country have been well informed on what to do when a suspected case arises”.

Family › UNICEF Advocates Paternity Leave With Pay In Nigeria by nex(op): 5:13am On Oct 04, 2017
UNICEF on Tuesday recommended six months paid maternity leave and four weeks paid paternity leave to ensure healthy development of young children.

UNICEF Representative in Nigeria Mohammed Fall disclosed this at the National Early Childhood Development conference in Abuja with the theme; “Investing early in Nigerian children”.

Fall also recommended two years pre-primary education, adding that the policies will afford parents time and resources needed to support their young children’s healthy development.

He said that Nigeria currently has three months paid maternity leave, only one year free pre- education and no paternity leave.

The representative emphasised that based on the 2016 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, the key indicators of child development remain low in ally.

Fall says, “Only about 40 per cent of children within the ages of 36 to 59 months are attending an organised early childhood education programme, while more than 31 per cent of children under the age of five are moderately and severely underweight.

“Yet research in the Lancet series 2016 shows that early childhood education programme is a foundation for health, productivity, learning and social cohesion”.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/584-44.jpg?resize=640%2C360

Fall noted that the conference was aimed at creating awareness on the meaning and importance of the early years of a child from conception to five years in early childhood nutrition, education and development.

“Nigeria is putting its children at risk of underdeveloped both physically and mentally because critical national policies are not providing an adequate foundation for their growth.

“During the first one year of a child’s life the brain grows rapidly.

“Providing good nutrition, loving care and appropriate play provide solid foundation for child’s learning and eventual contribution to economic and social growth.

“Early Childhood Development includes physical and cognitive support has a strategic place in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS).

“Investing in ECD includes services to support caregivers, quality pre-primary education and good nutrition will help to secure healthy and productive future generations in Nigeria,” Fall said.

“Supporting exclusive breastfeeding, having good ECD policies in place will help to improve the overall health of a child, enable parents and care givers to be more responsive to children’s needs and provide greater safety and security,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlight of the conference was the inauguration of UNICEF report on Early Moments Matter for Early Child.

Entertainment › Life And Times Of Hugh Hefner The Founder Playboy Empire by nex(mod): 5:06am On Oct 04, 2017
Hugh Hefner found a way to sell sex to the USA and the world, perhaps better than anybody in the 20th century.
The founder of Playboy and the publishing house built up around the pioneering men’s magazine, which combined sex and intellectual stimulation, has died. He was 91.

“Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognizable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones,” Playboy confirmed in a statement to E! News. “He was 91 years old.”

Information regarding memorial services is not available at this time.

Hefner, often referred to by the jauntier moniker “Hef,” passed away at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles‘ Holmby Hills neighborhood. His longtime home, with its infamous grotto and nearly 22,000 square feet of living space, became one of the most well-known residences in the world, synonymous with “party central” for Hollywood elite and those lucky enough to swing an invitation; it was sold for $100 million last year, but the deal included the stipulation that Hefner could continue to live there for the rest of his life.

https://i0.wp.com/akns-images.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/2016011/rs_1024x759-160111112057-1024-playboy-mansion-hugh-hefner.ls.11116.jpg?resize=1024%2C759

The original Playboy Mansion was actually in Chicago, however, where Hefner launched what would become his empire and, ultimately, his legacy.

Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926, to strict Methodist parents. The eldest of two brothers, he served two years in the Army during World War II and then went to work at Esquire as a copywriter. But by 1953, he was ready to strike out on his own in the publishing world.

Having scraped together $8,000, Hefner put together the first issue of Playboy at home and it hit newsstands in December 1953, complete with an old nude photo of screen goddess Marilyn Monroe that Hefner had purchased to add some oomph to the centerfold. The issue sold more than 50,000 copies and a publishing house was born—as was the pop culture relevance of the Playboy centerfold, which became the playground for Hef’s Playmates of the Month.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Hugh-Hefner-The-Founder-And-Publisher-Of-American-Erotic-Playboy-Magazine-Dies-Aged-91-youn-and-old-picture-e1506580135763.jpg?resize=450%2C300

And while Hefner knew that photos of nude women—which over the years included stars ranging from Madonna, Kate Moss and Sharon Stone to Lindsay Lohan, Pamela Anderson and Naomi Campbell—were what paid the bills, he always had lofty ideals and a firmly progressive philosophy when it came to the tone and sociopolitical purpose of his flagship magazine.

“I think that from the very beginning…what made Playboy so popular was not simply the naked ladies, there were naked ladies in other magazines,” Hefner explained in an interview. “What made the magazine so popular was, even before I started writing the philosophy, there was a point of view in the magazine…Prior to that you couldn’t run nude pictures without some kind of rationale that they were art. I made them into, I put them into a context of a positive, or what I perceived as a positive attitude, on male-female relationships. I suggested that sex was not the enemy, that violence was the enemy, that nice girls like sex.”

Joanna Krupa, who posed for Playboy in 2005 and 2009, told Fox News when the latter issue came out, “There are several great reasons why female celebs line up to shoot Playboy: finally a woman gets paid more than a man for comparable work, she gets to set the rules, gets to be in a real team work with other women, as many key positions at Playboy are in fact held by women! She brings in her creative ideas, gets involved in the photo selection and ends up with something she co-created through and through.”

Hefner made good on his image as a ladies’ man who spent the majority of his at-home time in silk pajamas and a smoking jacket. He was married from 1949 until 1959 to Mildred Williams, the mother of his daughter Christie and son David, but remained a bachelor for the next 40 years after they divorced. He of course had numerous girlfriends during that time, including a nine-year relationship with singer and model Barbi Benton, during which she appeared on three Playboy covers.
“I told him I never dated a man over 24,” Benton recalled to People in 1980. “He told me he never dated anyone older than that either.”

Hefner gave an interview from a rotating bed in 1968

Playboy Enterprises expanded to include, off and on over the years, television, film, resorts, nightclubs, products, a philanthropic arm and, ultimately, a number of websites, the brand always recognizable thanks to its signature logo—the silhouette of the head of a dapper, bow-tie-wearing rabbit.

In 1971, Playboy was selling 7 million copies a month, but competition had started to arrive in the form of Penthouse, with its “Penthouse Pets,” and in 1974 Larry Flynt‘s Hustler debuted. At first Playboy dabbled in more graphic photos, but eventually returned to its more intellectual, skin-with-a-purpose roots and doubled down on signature features and photo series.

Meanwhile, Hefner moved permanently to his Playboy Mansion in L.A. in 1974 and got involved in local affairs and civic projects, such as the restoration of the Hollywood sign. A minor stroke prompted a reassessment of his lifestyle, to a certain extent. He married longtime girlfriend Kimberley Conrad in 1989 and they had two sons together, Marston and Cooper.

https://i1.wp.com/akns-images.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/2016110/rs_1024x759-160210114552-1024.Cooper-Hefner-Playboy.jl.021016.jpg?resize=1024%2C759

Hef and Kimberley didn’t officially divorce until 2010, but they had an open relationship for years—most publicly when Hefner starred from 2005 to 2010 on E!’s The Girls Next Door with resident girlfriends Kendra Wilkinson, Bridget Marquardt and Holly Madison.
After calling off their engagement at least once prior, Hefner married Crystal Harris on Dec. 31, 2012. Earlier that year he had said that son Cooper would likely carry on as the public face of Playboy in his stead. A private equity firm put Playboy Enterprises on sale this past April $500 million—not an indicator that Hefner’s family would no longer be involved, but rather to shore up the media corporation’s finances.

Asked in 2013 how many women he had been with over the years, Hefner inquired right back to Esquire, “How could I possibly know? Over a thousand, I’m sure. There were chunks of my life when I was married, and when I was married I never cheated. But I made up for it when I wasn’t married. You have to keep your hand in.”

Hefner, who quaintly enjoyed movie nights and other comforts of home, continued to tweet and otherwise interact with the world publicly up until recently, but he had reportedly been in declining health for some time and rarely left the Playboy Mansion.

Which, in the end, was more than a mansion. It was a state of mind.

Hefner is survived by Harris and his four children from previous relationships. In 2011, he wondered aloud to The Hollywood Reporter, “Could I be in a better place and happier than I am today? I don’t think so. In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined a sweeter life.”

Crime › How Nigerian Banks Engage In Money Laundering – Ibrahim Magu by nex(op): 4:58am On Oct 04, 2017
EFCC acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, has lamented non-compliance with regulations on money laundering and other related offences by some banks and financial institutions.

Magu, who described money laundering as a threat to developing and developed countries, expressed regret that some banks had not been reporting suspicious transactions in line with statutory regulations.

Speaking today at a workshop on “Money laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism” organized by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, CIBN, in Lagos, Magu, who was represented by Head of Operations, Lagos Zonal Office, condemned the activities of some Bureau De Change, operators, saying that “Most of them are not licenced and usually do not keep records. You can imagine when $2million was carried cash and given to an unregistered BDC man on the street.”

The EFCC boss also stated that some bank officials were in the habit of opening accounts for government officials even after the introduction of the Treasury Single Account, TSA, thereby allowing government funds to be diverted.

He added: “There are several bank accounts that are not linked to BVN and are still active.

“Some micro-finance banks indulge in collecting huge sums of cash for a short fixed term deposit with attractive high interests.”

Magu, who said the Commission had since the beginning of the year recorded several convictions in corruption, money laundering, oil pipeline vandalism and related offences, further stated that coordinated national and international steps must be taken to combat the menace of money laundering.

He also advocated increased sensitization and awareness campaigns within the government and private business sector as a counter- measure against money laundering.

Magu added: “ Application of penalties ranging from fine to revocation of licence by regulators shall send a strong signal to erring banks and other reporting organizations
“Regular review of the legal framework to move with time and accommodate new emerging trends of money laundering is key.”

The organisers presented a plague to Magu in appreciation of his relentless efforts towards stamping out corruption and economic crimes from the country.

Crime › Lagos State DNA Forensic Centre by nex(op): 4:07am On Oct 04, 2017
Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday commissioned the first state owned DNA Forensic Centre in West Africa. Governor Ambode said the move would go a long way in resolving all form of crimes, paternity issues and others through technology which is the modern trend across the world.

Governor Ambode said the completion and handing over of the centre located at Odunlami Street in Lagos Island, was a significant milestone and a symbolic manifestation of his administration’s policies in reforming the justice sector and in line with his vision to make the State safe for residents and investors.

He said the State Government, with the completion of the centre, is joining other advanced countries of the world which had embraced technology to make life easier for people in all spheres of existence.

He said: “From the domestic front to our places of work; from the way we learn, to doing business, the use of technology has become a way of life. You will therefore understand why our administration had no hesitation in approving this project which serves amongst other things, as an effective method of bringing perpetrators of crime to book and ensuring quick dispensation of justice.”

The Governor recalled that from inception, his administration realised the fact that security was key to good governance and sustainability of investment to make life better for the people, a development he said necessitated the heavy investment in security equipment, recruitment and training of security personnel to assist law enforcement agencies in the maintenance of public peace and security.

The interventions, Governor Ambode said, had translated into tremendous success by the reduction in the incidents of crimes in the State, adding that the DNA Centre was another move demonstrating the State Government’s resolve to stay ahead of criminals through scientific-led investigations.

Giving details of the DNA Centre, the Governor said the facility has capacity to provide the Police, Prosecutors, Defense Attorneys and Private citizens with crime scene processing; serological screening for blood and semen; DNA analysis of bone, teeth and hair; maternal and paternal relationship DNA analysis; expert witness and case handling services; paternal and maternal ancestry DNA analysis; cold case file review and mass disaster human identification

While assuring that the government would not rest on its oars in coming up with initiatives to secure the State, Governor Ambode said with the commissioning, the government would now move to the second stage of building additional capacity in the areas of Toxicology; Trace Evidence and Controlled Substance Analysis; Fingerprint and Latent prints; Firearms, Ballistics and Tool Marks; Digital Forensics; and Questioned Documents Examination.

According to him, “The development of these other forensic sections at the facility will complement the DNA forensic section and enhance the level of services offered today.

Before now, most, if not all DNA analysis and testing were performed outside Nigeria, a situation that caused longer turn-around times and an overall higher cost of bringing closure to a case.

“I am therefore convinced that the establishment of the Lagos DNA & Forensic Centre will improve the speed and quality of evidence collected to assist our Courts in the quick dispensation of justice. This centre is a definite boost for our administration’s Justice Sector reform programme. It shows that our covenant with Lagosians to create a safe and secure State is being kept,” Governor Ambode said.

In his welcome address, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem said the centre would assist the State to have a reliable DNA database that would enable investigators and law enforcement officers identify crime patterns and suspects, and also help exonerate or convict suspects.

On his part, the Consul General of United States Embassy in Lagos, Mr John Bray congratulated Governor Ambode and the people of the State for successfully completing the building of “the first DNA Forensic Centre not only in Nigeria but in West Africa,” saying that the development would enhance justice and progress.

Bray, who had worked as a law enforcement officer in United States for twenty-five years before being posted to Lagos, said the State Government deserved commendation for the foresight and vision to undertake such project as the DNA Forensic centre, adding that there was no question about the fact that the facility is of world class standard.

On his part, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Abayomi Olonishakin represented by Rear Admiral Lawal Modu Adams said the centre was a significant milestone in the country’s fight against all forms of crime including terrorism.

Also, Lagos State Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal said the completion of the centre was another first by the Lagos State Government and one of the greatest moves by any state government towards boosting security and justice delivery.

He said with the opening of the centre, the State Police Command would now reopen unresolved high-profile cases hitherto frustrated by lack of solid evidence.

“I am perhaps the happiest person here today because this will enhance my job. We have a lot of pending high profile cases that we have not resolved yet. These cases, we intend to revisit with this new centre coming on board,” the CP said.

Business › ANALYSE THIS Season 2 Episode 4 – Surviving A Dwindling Economy On Ndanitv by nex(op): 10:15am On Sep 01, 2017
On this episode of Analyse This, Honey Ogundeyi and Tunji Andrews discuss survival methods employed by Nigerians and companies in the face of a dwindling economy.

3 out of about 7 respondents specifically said “things are getting worser”, and I have to agree with them, and their grammar. We’re not losing any more jobs because we’ve lost as many as we can lose. Most companies are now strictly sticking to sustenance staff who are necessary to keep them going.

We’re not having any more companies shut down because as many as can shut down have done so. All we have left are the few businesses which are critical to running the most basic economic activities. Lots of start-ups which ventured into experimental models have closed shops. Lots of luxury stores have gone under. Even multi-nationals like Etisalat and Uber are struggling in Nigeria.

As the Naira strengthens, it is the duty of Government to ensure it maintains the current prices of imported products by imposing taxes on them, especially the luxury products such as Champagne, Brazilian Hair, and Muscle Supplements…by the way, please Tunji, please stop taking expired STEROIDS! No wonder you were able to outwork me in the gym on Saturday. ;(

So how have businesses and citizens managed to stay afloat in these times of economic uncertainty?

WATCH Analyse This Season 2 Episode 4 on NdaniTV For Tunji and Honey‘s own analysis:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5HifZzwLoU

Meanwhile, how come Honey is more street savvy with the economy, and Tunji is the one worrying about big man problems? The economy is really not getting better for the masses, though I can tell even from my own clients who are now beginning to make orders again, that it is the HNIs and the Corporates who are feeling any form of improvements. Maybe because of the PTA, BTA, and other windows they’re now enjoying. Those of us at the bottom, we’re not seeing anything.

Islam › Proper Method Of Slaughtering Ram As Halal In Islam by nex(op): 9:57am On Sep 01, 2017
A large quota of people look forward to Eid mostly in excitement over meat from the rams which will be slaughtered on that day. It is necessary we learn the proper method of slaughtering Sallah ram as halal, so that the sacrifice made would be accepted by Allah.

We must recall that this celebration is in honour of the sacrifice Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) made when he obeyed God’s commandment to give his son as offering, and ultimately, God’s eventual replacement of Ishaq (Isaac) with a ram for the prophet to slaughter in his stead.

Due to recent observations of how rams are being slaughtered in some parts today, especially Lagos, it has become important that the existence of stipulated guideline for animal slaughter in Islam be highlighted.

To begin with, due to the Lagos economy, and the hustling nature of its inhabitants, a majority may find ad libitum feeding of an animal which will soon be slaughtered as a pointless and indeed wasteful engagement, as it is not as if the animal will grow a bit more before slaughter, and neither would it significantly lose weight over a few days of malnutrition. This perception is very wrong on two fronts.

From an Islamic point of view, any animal that is starved before being slaughtered is automatically Haram (forbidden), and also from a nutritional point of view, any animal which does not have adequate glucose in its body before slaughter will not produce soft, nutritious meat.

Animals to be slaughtered for consumption by Muslims must not be maltreated in any form, made mockery, of, or have injuries on them. In order words, unnecessary whipping, riding, painful tying and especially ram fighting is forbidden. In fact, those who use their rams to fight are probably worshiping some other deity, but definitely not Allah.

Slaughtering must be performed manually by a mature Muslim who fully understands the fundamentals and conditions relating to slaughtering according to the Shari’ah, and at the time of slaughtering the name of Allah must be invoked by saying: “Bismillah – Allahu Akbar“.

If for some reason, the name or names of someone other than Allah is invoked at the time of slaughtering, the meat becomes Haram. If by mistake, the slaughterer forgets to invoke the name of Allah at the time of slaughtering, the meat will remain Halal. If however, the slaughterer knowingly skips the name of Allah at the time of slaughtering, the meat becomes Haram.

The ram should be properly restrained using ropes and also the hands, which means an assistant will be required. The knife to be used in slaughtering it should be twice as long as the width of the ram’s neck  and very sharp, and should be used to cut through the windpipe, food-tract and two jugular veins, preferably in one stroke.

The neck of the animal should not be disjointed during slaughtering intentionally, even the knife should not go deep into the spinal marrow. The blood of the slaughtered animal must be drained as completely as possible. Slaughtering from the back of the neck is not allowed in Islam.

Please do not behead your ram in this manner during slaughter, and especially refrain from taking pleasure in sharing photographs of mutilated animals with friends and relative. Thank you. Now, for the location of Sallah meat, tweet at me (@Bar_Baric). Happy Sallah!

Entrepreneurship is great, and I’m happy more and more young Nigerians are getting into it, but it is necessary that if they have a job, they do the honourable thing to tell their bosses, then move on to their own thing as soon as they can.

Employment is also a wonderful thing. I have a sister who’s been with Total for almost 30 years she would cry when time comes for retirement. I also have a brother who was a pioneer staff of GTBank. He loved his job so much, he sometimes used to go to the office on Sundays, and went on to work there for more than 20 years. These 2 people have the most wealth in our family. So sometimes, a job pays far better.

I feel it is unethical for fulltime (9 to 5) staff to have side hustles, or as some Nigerians call them, PP. Divided attention, lack of adequate rest, likelihood of leaving just after gaining a lot of experience, and like Kabir said, there could be some conflict of interest when they meet their employers business contacts.

There are some employers who would want to encourage their staff to take up side hustles, there has to be full disclosure on that so that things don’t go southward.

The worst experience I’ve seen with this matter of entrepreneurial staff is recently, when I met someone who uses his subordinates in the company where he’s employed to run his side hustle. Not only is he using up company time and facilities himself (he prints movie scripts in the office), but he is using up the time of other staff, within and outside the company, then when he decides to go start up his own thing, he may just leave with the best of them.

So let’s respect those who choose to hold on to their jobs and do nothing else, and let’s encourage those who want to try their hands on other things to be ethical about it, and move on from those jobs as soon as possible.

Do you think having a side hustle limits productivity at one’s 9-5? What are your thoughts on employers who don’t believe in training their staff because they don’t trust their loyalty? Join the Ndani Real Talk discussion now on Twitter with the hashtag #NdaniRealTalk.

Business › CIBN President Charges Inductees On Innovation And Independence by nex(op): 2:15am On Aug 30, 2017
Prof. Segun Ajibola, the President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), on Saturday urged the newly inducted members to be innovative, rather than searching for employment.

Ajibola spoke at the 2017 CIBN Graduates Induction and Prize Award in Lagos.

He said that entrepreneurship has been a veritable solution as the global economies continue to find viable alternatives toward addressing social and economic challenges.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 1,034 graduates consisted of 234 newly qualified associates were inducted.

The theme is: “Entrepreneurship Mindset: A Critical Success Factor for the 21st Century Professional.’’

The CIBN president said that the emerging trend was a shift to a performance economy whereby temporary and flexible jobs were routine.

“Companies tend toward hiring independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees.

“Analysts predicted that performance economic system will likely overturn the concept of full-time works that focus on lifetime careers.

“The primary factor that will facilitate this transition is digital disruption that makes workforce increasingly mobile and virtual, thereby decoupling jobs and location.’’ he said.

Ajibola implored the new inductees that were conferred with CIBN certificates to translate the knowledge they acquired into an entrepreneurial mind-set.

He said: “Wherever you find yourself, whether employed in the private, public sector or self-employed, the critical success factor is to think, feel, speak and act like a business owner.

“ For those in the paid employment, there must be a paradigm shift from civil service mentality of whether the owner sells the bunch of palm leaves or not, the load carrier will collect his due.

“Also the slogan I will do it well, when I start my own business. You may not do any better, because in the words of Aristotle, `we are what we repeatedly do.’

“The place to start is on your current job, do not wait until you start your own business.’’

Also, Mr Olabode Augusto, the founder, Augusto & Co. Ltd., said that the rate at which the economy was creating jobs was not keeping pace with the population growth.

Augusto said in spite of the large fast growing population being a problem, “it presents significant opportunities for the entrepreneur who can provide solutions to segments of the population that have the capacity and willingness to pay’’.

He advised the new CIBN graduates to target their products and services at those who have capacity and willingness to pay.
