The Nigerian military on Tuesday recaptured Bama, a Borno town that was captured by the Boko Haram insurgents in September last year, a security source has said.

The military had made several unsuccessful attempts in the past to recapture the strategic town from the insurgents.

With Tuesday's retrieval of Bama, a boost has been given to the ongoing war on the insurgents.

Bama, a historic Kanuri town, is the second largest town in Borno after Maiduguri.

It was learnt that the battle to uproot the insurgents from the town was led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), the 7th division, General Lamidi Adeosun.

The GOC, an infantry general, took his team to the town on Monday and had recorded victory by Tuesday.

It was learnt that contrary to expectations, the Nigerian troops did not meet any serious resistance from the sect in Konduga and Bama towns, giving the indication that the strength of the terrorist group might have whittled down since the commencement of the ongoing clampdown.

A military source told our correspondent on the return of the troops from the battle to recapture Bama, that the renewed motivation gave victory to them. He insisted that the bravery of the GOC and the supply of new equipment equally did the magic.

The source said: "My brother, we are happy that our Commander in Chief has been able to upgrade us and as we speak, we have the right equipments to end the war in the next one week. The GOC himself is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that we meet the deadline for elections to the best of his human ability.

"The general did not even utilize our crack boys in Konduga. He just took his team from our supply of new boys here and drove straight into Bama leaving the Konduga guys to rest and continue watching his back till he took over Bama, chased the bad people out and removed their flags and installed our authority."

Another military source said: "This latest feat can be attributed to the support from Abuja. We now have the right kind of equipment to fight modern equipment and can now fight the insurgency to a standstill."

He revealed that with the recapture of Bama, the foreign soldiers who have been restricted to the nation’s border towns can now come in for the final push of the insurgents.

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has asked the All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to withdraw from the March 28 presidential election.

Fayose said Buhari and the APC no longer had the moral right to participate in the presidential election, having allegedly lied to Nigerians on several occasions.

According to a press statement issued in Ado-Ekiti by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor argued that the APC had lied severally to Nigerians.

He said, “In saner climes, you can’t lie and be discovered to have lied repeatedly as done by the APC and still want to stand for elections.

“The new deceit from the APC is to use a photoshoped picture of Buhari for posters in Lagos, making him look like a 50 year old man, whereas he is as old as my mother and cannot survive the rigours of office even as a governor not to talk of President of Nigeria.

“First, the APC vice presidential candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a supposed pastor, posted a picture of Reinhard Bonke crusade on his Twitter handle, claiming that the picture was that of APC campaign rally in Kano.

“Second, the APC claimed that Buhari made a surprise visit to Chibok and went further to lie that the people and parents of Chibok girls were filled with hope and joy upon sighting Buhari and his entourage, and escorted him into Chibok with singing and dancing.

“Third, the APC cabal claimed that Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom on a working visit and used fake pictures to back up their lies that Buhari met with ex-British Prime minister, Tony Blair, and had a television interview in London.

“Even when Buhari’s wife admitted that her husband was in the UK to rest, the APC cabal went on with their lies, using pictures taken in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, as proof of Buhari’s activities in London.

“If a party and its candidate could lie as brazenly as done by the APC and Buhari, do they still have moral rights to want to rule Nigeria?

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that he would free the people of Lagos State from the “bondage” of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has ruled the state since the inception of the fourth republic in 1999.

He asked the people not to vote for APC during the rescheduled general elections but to cast their votes for all the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates contesting elections, so as to be free from APC’s alleged 16 years of oppression.

The President said this yesterday when a group of market women in the state paid him solidarity visit at the State House, Marina, Lagos.

Jonathan promised the market women that a PDP-led administration in the state would provide the enabling environment for traders to do business without hindrance.

Jonathan commended the women for supporting his re-election bid and urged them not to be intimidated by the opposition, saying, “I have listened to you; you have been carrying the PDP flag; you have been humiliated but you still marched on.

Thank you for working hard for PDP. This is the final struggle and the time for us to use all our strength to achieve victory.”

Earlier, the leader of the visiting team, Hajia Aminat Hussein, had told Jonathan that they had stood by the PDP since its inception but regretted that the members suffered harassment under the APC-led government in lagos
