The wreckage of the plane that vanished with the footballer Emiliano Sala on board has been found within hours of a search starting in the sea off the Channel Islands.



A search boat hired privately by Sala’s Argentinian family – thanks partly to a crowdfunding appeal – located the wreckage on Sunday morning.



The crew passed the details of the location on to government investigators, who used a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to examine the spot.



There was no immediate official confirmation of what was found but the shipwreck specialist leading the private investigation, David Mearns, said the plane had been discovered.



No information about whether any bodies were in the plane was given. Two seat covers from the aircraft washed up last week on the coast of France.



UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) will probably make a statement on Monday.



The Piper Malibu N264DB carrying 28-year-old Sala and the pilot, David Ibbotson, 59, disappeared over the Channel on 21 January after leaving Nantes in France at about 7.15pm for Cardiff.

Earlier on Sunday, Mearns, who claims to have located 24 major shipwrecks during his career, said he would be leading a team of seven others on the vessel FPV Morven.



He said the search was being carried out “in close coordination” with the AAIB. The plan was to cover an area of about four square nautical miles over three days.



Mearns and his team had been confident the plane would be found. The area of seabed that was being searched, north of Guernsey, was not very deep – about 65 metres – and was stony and bare because it had been dredged by scallop fishermen. Mearns has said the currents are strong and there are other wrecks there, which made it more tricky.



During the journey, the plane had requested to descend, but then it lost contact with Jersey air traffic control.

The start of search was delayed by the poor weather. But the fact that the plane has apparently been found so quickly will raise questions over whether it could have been launched within the first few days.

The United Kingdom has joined in the condemnation of the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammad Buhari without recourse to due process of the law, with a warning that the government’s action is capable of creating negative perception on the credibility of the forthcoming elections.



The UK, in a statement from its High Commission in Abuja, while also lamenting that the government was wrong in the timing of its action, expressed worry that the government may have acted in an unconstitutional manner in suspending the CJN.



“The British High Commission expresses serious concern over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. We have heard a wide range of credible and independent voices, including in the Nigerian legal profession and civil society, who have expressed concern over the constitutionality of the executive branch’s suspension of the chief officer of the judiciary,” part of the statement read.



While acknowledging that the UK respects Nigeria’s sovereign authority and its right to adjudicate on constitutional provisions, the embassy however noted that as friends of the Nigerian people, the UK is “compelled to observe that the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives cause for concern. It risks affecting both domestic and international perceptions on the credibility of the forthcoming elections”.

Nigerian lawyers under the aegis of Coalition Of Lawyers Against Corruption in Nigeria, COLAC, has given President Muhammadu Buhari seven days to reinstate the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen.



The CJN was suspended yesterday by President Buhari who said that he acted on an order by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT.



COLAC said by this singular act, President Buhari has demonstrated that he does not have any regard for the Supreme law of the land which is the constitution.



In a statement to DAILY POST by Barrister Olusegun Bamgbose, National Coordinator, COLAC, the lawyers said the President should be reminded that his lack of respect for the rule of law was capable of truncating our nascent democracy.



The statement added, “The purported suspension of Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Buhari, is undoubtedly unconstitutional and unacceptable. It’s a complete show of shame.



“The reason given by the President that he was ordered by the CCT to wield the big stick is legally and morally watery. It’s unreasonable and illogical.



“It has become very obvious that the President does not have any iota for the Supreme law of the land which is our Constitution."

More than 30 million people around the globe have speech impairments and must rely on sign language, which poses a language barrier when seeking to communicate with non-sign language users.
It is something Roy Allela’s knows too well.
Roy Allela’s six-year-old niece was born deaf and found it extremely difficult to communicate with her family, none of whom knew sign language.

They say necessity is the mother of invention and the need to communicate and connect with her niece pushed 25-year-old Roy to invent smart gloves that convert sign language movements into audio speech.
Sign-io’s sign language to speech translation glove recognizes various letters signed by sign language users and transmits this data to an Android application where it is vocalized.

This feat saw Roy win admiration and recognition by the prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the world’s largest organization for mechanical engineers, during its prestigious 2017 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) competition.
Roy and two other African inventors – one from Uganda and Ghana – took home the Grand Prize in second of three regional showcase events.
Brian Gitta from Uganda who developed Matibabu, a noninvasive device used to test for Malaria, Charles Antipem from Ghana who created Science Set, an affordable, portable, practical and highly scalable science lab that can fit in the bag and on the desk of students and Roy Allela shared $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, along with three other winners in Bangalore, India, and three more in Washington, DC.

The winners were among ten socially-minded hardware entrepreneurs who were selected among 150 applicants as finalist of the event, held at the Golden Tulip Westlands Nairobi Hotel, to present a range of devices designed to make a transformational economic, environmental, and social impact.
During the competition, the finalists appeared before a panel of judges, including successful entrepreneurs, academics, and founders of venture-funded startup companies, to pitch the engineering design attributes of their prototypes and outline their plans for manufacturing, implementation, marketing, and financing.
