In what appeared to be a move to right the clandestine move and selective activities of the NFF electoral Committee, the Minister of Sports, Tamuno Danagogo, said on Wednesday afternoon that the government was opposed to the decision of the electoral committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to disqualify some candidates. Mr. Danagogo, who is also the chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, stated this while addressing journalists in Abuja. “We do not support any process that looks fraudulent,…, that produced one candidate. We want a situation where all stakeholders will contest and neat result will come out. “For that reason, to us it is proper and it is acceptable to let the press know that we agree with the aggrieved persons in totality,” he said. The electoral committee had on Wednesday morning disqualified ex-Nigerian international and 1980 Nations Cup winner, Segun Odegbami; former scribe of the NFF, Taiwo Ogunjobi; and current Acting Chairman of the Federation, Victor Umeh. Only one candidate, Chris Giwa, owner of Giwa FC, was cleared to contest for President of the NFF. Mr. Danagogo, however, condemned the electoral process expected to lead to the August 26 election of new leaders of the NFF. “(This) level of ineptitude is certainly not acceptable. NSC will not conduct elections for them. We will do everything possible to conduct free and fair election. “If it means we will delay the process or resell the form. Forms should be open to individuals eligible to compete,” he said. The NFF electoral committee had disquaified many aspirants to the office of the President of the Nigerian Football Federation for no genuine reason, thereby paving the way for a one man contest. The intervention by the Hon. Minister is timely as all qualified interested parties must be given equal opportunity to contest for any vacant position they so desire. |

The lawmakers had vowed not to appear before the panel. The seven-member panel investigating allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Umaru Al-Makura has dismissed all the charges. The panel dismissed the charges after concluding its work and listening to the counsel to the Assembly on Tuesday morning. The State Assembly had on Monday declared the inauguration of the panel by the State Chief Judge, Suleiman Dikko, as unconstitutional saying it would stay away from the probe. But on Tuesday, the Assembly made a u-turn, and sent a legal team led by Ocha Ulegede to represent it before the panel. The other members of the Assembly’s legal team were John Mathew, P. A. Daffi, Steven Idikwu, Ache Obande and Abraham Aruta. The legal team arrived at the venue of the sitting around 8.45 a.m. and took the seats marked for the state assembly. The legal team said the panel was breaching the Nigerian constitution. Mr. Ulegede then presented a protest letter written by the legislators and argued that some members of the panel were also members of a political party and that their appointments negated the provision of Section 188 in the composition of the panel. He said that the provision did not give the Chief Judge absolute power to appoint members of the panel. Mr. Ulegede also said the provision stated that panel members must not belong to any political party, be a government appointee or be a person with questionable character. The legal team said the panel had no right to set guidelines for the conduct of the sitting. “Section 188 of the constitution spelt out clearly how the panel should be composed. They are three fundamental issues among which is that member of the panel cannot be a card carrying member of a political party. They cannot hold government appointment and that the panel does not have the power to set the rules of proceeding guiding the sitting”. The legislators’ legal team said two members of the seven-member panel, Abdu Usman and Mohammed Keana, are members of the Peoples Democratic Part, PDP. The legal team also said Joel Galadima is on the payroll of the state government. Mr. Ulegede told the panel that the house does not recognize the panel and then requested to leave the premises. After the panel heard the protest of the counsel to the State Assembly, it went on a brief recess. When it resumed from the recess, the panel, which had listened to Mr. Al-Makura on Monday, dismissed the 16 charges against the governor.

This was aimed at curtaling infant mortality rate in Nigeria resulting from malaria. I think this was the reason that World Bank part funded it. May God help us |

Are mosquito nets not supposed to be given to nursing mothers or women who put to bed in government hospitals, perhaps on demand? When my wife put to bed sometime in May, we have kept asking for a net, but they have kept telling us that the nets are not available, but to our greatest surprise and shock, replica of these nets are hawked on major roads across the country. I actually wanted to get/buy one from the hawkers, but I was advised by a friend that I could end up buying a fake and contaminated net which would be injurious to my baby's health. What do I do to get a mosquito net for my baby and how do I identify a good one? |

In the recent past, it has become something of a sport for various organisations to come up with list of richest entertainers, using various parameters most convenient to them. And more often than not, their publications are either greeted with disbelief, outrage and even scorn. If not from the persons concerned, it comes from the members of the public. There has never been a time a published list of the richest African musicians was welcomed with widespread acceptability. Even when Channel O and Forbes came up with a top ten list of richest African musicians, presumably using factors such as endorsement value, popularity, show rates, sales, awards, YouTube views, appearance in newspapers, investment, social media presense, influence and so many other factors, many people still did not believe they got it spot on. Now, an African online magazine known as Answers Africa has done its own findings, using pretty much the same parameters as Forbes and here is what they came up with. Compare it with Forbes list and see which one is nearer the mark: 1. Youssou N’dour: The legendary Senegalese singer born in 1959 tops the list. He is said to own biggest media houses in Senegal, including radio and TV stations. He has served as Senegalese cultural ambassador and culture minister . Note; not on Forbes list. 2. P-Square: The singing duo of Peter and Paul sit in the second position according to Answers Africa on account of their various endorsements and returns on shows and tours. They are said to make over 150 thousand dollars per show. Their Ikeja crib is valued at 3M dollars. Note: Rated third on Forbes’ list. 3. D’Banj: The Koko master who has now gone in deep into entrepreneurship is rated third richest in Africa. He charges over 100 thousand dollars per show and he is said to have a house in Atlanta, Georgia, USA worth more than 1.5M dollars. Note: Forbes rated him fourth in Africa 4. Kofi Olomide: Real names, Antoine Christophe Mumba, born 1956 is 4th. The DR Congplese Soukous star rakes in more than 100 thousand dollars per show. Has 7 albums to his credit. Note: Not on Forbes list. 5. Salif Keita: Malian Afro-pop singer, born 1949 is a direct descendant of Emperor Sundiata Keita, founder of Mali Empire. He is said to have private island and estates in France. Note: Not on Forbes list 6. Fally Ipupa: From Democratic Republic of Congo, Fally used to be part of Kofi Olomide’s band before branching out on his own. Immensely rich. Note: Not on Forbes list. 7. 2face Idibia: Has 5 albums to his name while working on the 6th. 2Face has won over 40 awards, probably more decorated than any of his contemporaries. He has vast investment in real estate. Earns around 50 t0 80 thousand dollars per show. Note: 6th on Forbes list 8. Hugh Masekela: Born 1939, Hugh is one of the most talented jazz artiste in Africa. The South African singer and trumpeter was once nominated for a Grammy award. Note; Not on Forbes list 9. Banky W: The widely acclaimed king of African Rn B has made so much money from endorsements. Brand ambassador for Etisalat in Nigeria, Samsung in the West African region, among others. Note: 10th on Forbes list. 10. Jose Chameleone: Joseph Mayanja, popular reggae musician from Uganda is the biggest money-maker in the Eastern Africa. He is said to have a spectacular fleet of customised exotic cars. Note: Not on Forbes list. What is your take on this list

63 abducted Borno women escape from Boko Haram Ola' Audu - 17 mins agoNATIONAL, NEWS The women regained freedom as captors left to attack the military. Some 63 out of about 70 women abducted in Borno State by suspected Boko Haram gunmen last week, have escaped from their captors, security sources and witnesses said. The women managed to regain their freedom as their captors mobilised out of their hideout to attack military and police formations in Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State, on Friday night and Saturday morning, according to security sources. Officials of the Borno State vigilante group were the first to hint journalists in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, about the escape. “I have just received an alert from my colleagues in Damboa area that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home. They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation”, said Abbas Gava, an official of the Vigilante group. “We don’t have the details of their escape yet, but we believe God gave them the opportunity at the time the insurgents came in their large numbers to attack Damboa where about 12 soldiers, five policemen, over 50 Boko Haram members and unspecified number of civilians were killed yesterday (Saturday).” Mr. Gava said about five women and two girls still remain under captivity. One of the women is said to be a nursing mother. A top security officer in Maiduguri, who asked not to be named, confirmed the escape to PREMIUM TIMES. “There is no doubt about your report; the women and girls were able to escape,” said the source. “I guess it was during the time the gunmen were attacking Damboa; left behind just some few men to watch over the women, but the women took advantage of an opportunity when the guys were dozing off, and bolted away but quietly. The security source said the women who mastered the terrain were able to return home, while some wondered to the Borno State borders with Adamawa state. Those at the border area were taken into safety by soldiers in Gulak town until arrangements were made for them to be returned home. The Borno State police declined to comment on the report. The news about the abduction of the women came to public notice almost a week after they had been taken by suspected Boko Haram gunmen who attacked the villages of Kumabza, Dagu and Yaga on the 12th, 13th and 14th of June. A 21-year old university undergraduate, Tolani Ajayi, has killed his father, chopped the body to pieces, before dumping the remains in a bush near their home in Ogun State, the police said. The suspect has since been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command. A witness told PREMIUM TIMES that the attack occurred Tuesday after an argument between Tolani and his father, Charles Ajayi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN. The late lawyer had reportedly questioned his son over his attitude and refusal to follow Biblical teachings. The suspect, a 300-level student of the Department of History and International Relations at Redeemer University, RCCG Camp, Ogun State, became infuriated when his father slapped him. Tolani retaliated by stabbing his father with a knife. He then hacked the body to pieces, packed the mutilated corpse in a box and dumped it in a nearby bush. The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident which he said occurred at the Redemption Camp along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. “The shattered body of Barrister Charles Ajayi, 60, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was seen and recovered in a nearby bush at Canaanland Street in the RCCG Camp, in a box after he had been killed by his son,” Mr. Adejobi said. He said Tolani, the suspect, was arrested at his father’s home after the corpse was discovered. Mr. Adejobi told PREMIUM TIMES that the Divisional Police Officer of Redemption Camp, Olaiya Martins, had led a team of detectives and some members of the community to where the body was found. The community members had earlier noticed the strange attitude of the suspect while he dumped the box. Following the drag marks made by the box, police officers traced the suspect to his home. Mr. Adejobi said upon interrogation, the suspect lied that his father had gone on evangelism. He later confessed to the crime, Mr. Adejobi said. He said the exhibits, including the knife and cutlass the suspect used in the attack, were recovered by the police while the corpse had been deposited at a morgue in Sagamu. Mr. Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, had sent a team of detectives, led by the officer in charge of the Homicide section of the Department of Criminal Investigation, Eleweran Abeokuta, to assess the situation and take over the matter for further investigation and necessary action. This is really pathetic! Source: http://m.premiumtimesng.com/news/164485-horror-senior-advocate-of-nigeria-san-killed-by-own-son.html |
