The students appealed to the lecturers to call off the strike. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Friday barricaded the Asaba axis of the Niger Bridge for more than two hours. The action, which was jointly carried out by some university students and their polytechnic counterparts, was in protest against the protracted strike by ASUU. The aggrieved students blocked the bridge at about 1 p.m., which resulted to a traffic gridlock that stretched from the bridge to Okwe junction about five kilometres to Asaba Town. They also lamented the recent decisions of polytechnic lecturers under the auspices of ASUP to also embark on a similar strike, saying it would further cripple the education sector and send a wrong signal to the international community. NANS National Public Relations Officer, Victor Ola-Ogun, said that the students were tired of the strike and appealed to ASUU to call it off. He said that the students had embarked on the peaceful protest and taken it to Kano and “now they are in Zone B, that is Delta and the Anambra area of the country.’’ He said that if the lecturers refuse to call off the strike, the association would further move the protest to Zone C and D, comprising the middle Belt areas and South West of the country. “We do not want a situation where our ladies will become prostitutes and the men armed robbers. “We are always there to fight for the lecturers’ welfare and now that the Federal Government has decided to meet some of their demands, they should consider for our sake and go back to work,’’ Mr. Ola-Ogun said. The students, many of whom were drawn from different parts of the country are expected to leave Delta to their various destinations on Saturday. The ASUU strike has been on since July 1. Source: NAN

In the wake of President's Jonathan's appeal to ICC during his Ethopian visit, a former prosecutor for the court has said his colleagues ignored political realities in the case against President Kenyatta of Kenya. The International Criminal Court said Friday it will excuse President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya from attending all his impending trial for crimes against humanity, as the world court faces increasing pressure over the trial. Judges at the court excused Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta from “continuous presence” at the trial, after a majority vote, with presiding Judge Kuniko Ozaki dissenting, the ICC said in a statement. Mr. Kenyatta’s trial is due to start on November 12. He is facing the charges alongside his vice, William Ruto. They are accused of instigating a wave of violence in which at least 1,200 people died after the country’s disputed election in 2007. They have denied the charges and have asked that the trial be rescheduled. African leaders have accused the ICC of bias against them, saying the court has dedicated much of its time prosecuting alleged offenders from the continent while ignoring similar violators elsewhere. Last week, the African Union passed a resolution calling for immunity for its serving leaders, and urging its members, including Mr. Kenyatta and Mr. Ruto, not to appear before the ICC until the United Nations Security Council responds to its demands. In a twist that upped the pressure even more on the ICC, a former chief prosecutor of the court on Thursday condemned his former colleagues over the Kenya case, warning that the indictments could damage the international justice system. David Crane, the U.S. lawyer who built the case against Liberia’s former president, Charles Taylor, said prosecutors at The Hague had ignored political realities in pursuing the Kenyan prosecution. He said that “could be the beginning of a long slide into irrelevance for international law”. “I would never have indicted or gotten involved in justice for the Kenyan tragedy,” Mr. Crane said. “It’s placed them in a situation where they are damned if they do or damned if they don’t.” There are reports that France is working on a UN resolution that would defer the Kenyan cases for 12 months. Mr. Crane said the cases he built during three years of investigations in West Africa from 2002-05 took into account local politics as well as the law. He branded former prosecutor, and Argentinian lawyer, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, who indicted the Kenyan leaders of being “over-ambitious” and having “political tin ear”. Mr. Moreno-Ocampo was a celebrity in Kenya when the country came close to a civil war and as many as 400,000 people lost their homes after the election in 2007. With many seeking justice, he led the ICC to step in after the country’s National Assembly could not agree on an alternative to a deal under which a national tribunal was meant to be set up to try the guilty. He lost the popularity after he included Messrs Kenyatta and Ruto-then candidates for the country’s 2011 presidential elections- among those indicted. Friday’s ruling states that the Kenyan president must be physically present during the opening and closing statements, hearings where victims “present their views and concerns in person,” the verdict, and any other sessions determined by the court. The judges said that the exemption was granted “to accommodate the demanding functions of [Mr. Kenyatta's] office as President of Kenya”. |
The ministry also condemned the information leak. Nigeria’s Aviation Ministry may have decided to go after its official that allegedly leaked the information of the purchase of two armoured vehicles for the minister, Stella Oduah. This was hinted by Folayele Akinkuotu, the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, at a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. Mr. Akinkuotu said Nicholas Edwards, a staff of the ministry who allegedly leaked the information to journalists, is now on the run. He also condemned the leak that exposed the purchase of the two armoured cars for N255 million. He said the two vehicles, purchased for N255 million, are meant to serve both the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, and aviation-related foreign dignitaries. The minister has come under attack by Nigerians and civil society organisations with many calling for her sack. Reports say Mrs. Oduah compelled the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, an agency under her supervision, in a presumed case of corruption, conflict of interest, and abuse of office, to procure the cars for her with public funds. Documents show that the transaction to procure the cars started last June. Things were then sped up with the cars delivered on 15. In a letter dated August 13, 2013, J.D Nkemakolam, the former Acting Managing Director of the NCAA, sent a letter to the Managing Director of Coscharis Motors asking the company to deliver two BMW 760 armoured vehicles to the agency based on a pro-forma invoice dated June 25, 2013 at the cost of N127, 575,000 ($796,846.21) each. The total amount for the two black BMW Li HSS vehicles, with chassis numbers WBAHP41050DW68032 and WBAHP41010DW68044 respectively, was N255,150,000, or $1,593,687.31. More details later… |

Reports reaching us have it that NANS shuts down Niger Bridge Asaba over the lingering ASUU strike. No vehicular movement for the past 3 hrs. Is this how far NANS could have gone, considering the fact that its politicized leaders/executive have been speaking from both sides of their mouth? The students appealed to the lecturers to call off the strike. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Friday barricaded the Asaba axis of the Niger Bridge for more than two hours. I am a 300 level student in the University of Abuja. The issue of release of semester results has become so intriguing than a camel passing through the eye of a needle. It is appaling that semester results are not released till after the commencement of a 3rd semester. What that means is that the 200 level 2nd semester results can't be released, till the 300 level 2nd semester begins. In some cases, when the results are released, they are full of discrepancies - like giving the result of student A to student B, or under calculating students points. Who are you as a student to complain to the authority even when you are a victim of this inneficiency? Dare it and you will be victimized. Till date, the 200l 2nd semester results have not been released, even when we finished our 300 level 1st semester exams in June/July, shortly before ASUU strike. Also, in this school, the sight of some lecturers is the begining of wisdom for students, not because these lectureres are exceptional or have integrity, but simply because they want to remain as lords to the students or thin gods feared by and worshiped by students. In most cases these lecturers, majority of whom are in a self serving war with the VC, hardly come to classes to teach, but when they do, most part of the time alloted for teaching is wasted in 'mind war' with students or the school management, yet these lecturers will effortlessly jump at any little opportunity to go on an internal ASUU strike or the incessant nationwide strike by ASUU. I am using this medium to appeal to the Samuel Ogbemudia led Goverrning Board to look into these issues which have continued to make learning difficult for the students and has contributed to retard the growth of Uniabuja. My question now is, must it take that long before results are released to students? Is it the same case in other Universities? Has it become so difficult to release semester results before or at the commencment of another semester? |

Pls, can someone help me out - My sister in the UK intends to invite her boy friend's parents to spend two weeks with her during Christmass; she has already sent an invitation letter in which she described the boy's father as her uncle. Pls will the Visa office demand for the evidence of that relationship between my sister and her boy's friend's father? She has also provided all her UK documents for me to proceed with the application for the man and the woman. Pls, how do I go about the application for them, considering that they are going as husband and wife. Is there anything like a joint Visa application or should I submit the application separately for them? Morealso, do I need to book for an appointment with the Visa Office before going there with the applicants for biometrics? Aside the documents supplied by my sister as their sponsor and the applicants' int'l passport, do the applicants still required to submit any other document? |
In a desperate attempt to make the playing pitch difficult for the Nigerian Team, the Ethopian Football Federation has left the pitch bumpy and dried, but the Super Eagles’ head coach, Stephen Keshi, has pleaded with the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) to water the Addis Ababa National Stadium pitch ahead of Sunday’s match against the Walya Antelopes. Keshi made the plea on Saturday in Addis Ababa while reacting to the football pitch’s dry playing surface and patchy grass. He said if the pitch was not watered, it could injure Super Eagles players and deny football fans the opportunity of watching good football. “We are pleading for the pitch to be watered so as to save our players from injuries and for the fans to watch good football,’’ Keshi said. Reacting, Yigzaw Bizuayehu, the Secretary-General of EFF, however told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview that the pitch was ready for Sunday’s encounter. He said the Nigerian team was not the only one to play on the pitch on Sunday. The official said the EFF had both the visitors and their players in mind and would not do something to endanger the players, adding that the pitch was watered regularly. “We did what we can. We have done our best as far as football is concerned,’’ he said. Bizuayehu told NAN further that Sunday’s game should not be seen as a do-or-die affair, saying that football was about wins, losses or draws. “I am a sportsman and an international referee. So, I know that football has three things, which is either you draw, lose or win. “So, why should I be scared of another team or be bothered if I lose? This is football, and we should not forget that everybody has his or her own talents and people are bound to play. “Don’t also forget that players are playing for their flags. So, no one is scared of anybody. “We will accept whatever the outcome of the match will be, but players must do their own job,’’ he said. NAN reports that the Nigerian side are in Addis Ababa for the first leg tie of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final Elimination Round Fixture. They face hosts Ethiopia on Sunday at 4 p.m. (2 p.m. Nigerian time). NAN reports that the return leg game will hold at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Nov. 16. To my mind, I think the Ethopians are up to something sinister, but would that the African Champions? 90 minutes of football shall tell (NAN) |
In another attempt to render it ineffective, the Adamawas State's Lodge, housing the Secretariat of the New PDP has been sealed by authorities of the FCTA. The FCTA says the use of the building for political meetings violates Abuja’s master plan. Federal authorities sealed the Adamawa state governor’s lodge in Maitama, Abuja, Saturday, complaining that the property was illegally serving a political purpose. Authorities claim the building is being used as a secretariat by the breakaway Baraje-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party. The Federal Capital Territory Administration said the repeated use of the building for political meetings was a violation of the city’s master plan, which reserves the Maitama area strictly for residential purposes. “The Governor’s Lodge as it is today, is being used as a Political Party Office thereby negating the spirit of urban planning and causing nuisance and disturbance on the residents dwelling in that area of the city as well as inflicting undue pressure on the infrastructure and services therein, contrary to the principles of the Abuja Master Plan,” the FCTA said in a statement late Saturday hours after sealing the building. The decision to shut the office on Saturday seemed the government’s most brazen clampdown yet on a faction of the ruling party that emerged August, and established a parallel authority within the party, setting off the most serious division the ruling party has ever experienced in its history. The splinter group is led by Abubakar Baraje, a former acting chairman of the party; and is supported by seven governors opposed to President Goodluck Jonathan’s plan to seek re-election in 2015. The seven governors also demand the removal of the party’s chairman, Bamanga Tukur. The crisis has defied a resolution as both sides have refused to budge after meetings between the president and the governors and other party leaders. The Baraje group settled for the Adamawa lodge early September after another office that was to serve as its secretariat was closed by armed police who claimed launching the office was against a court order. The FCT administration said its decision to close the Adamawa lodge was because of its use for political purpose, which it said would over stretch available facilities within the neighbourhood and cause traffic gridlock in the area. “The administration wishes to assure that all actions by a person or group of persons that inflict pains on the residents whether directly or indirectly would not be condoned as government is meant to serve and protect the rights of all,” the statement signed by Muhammad Sule, the office’s Chief Press Secretary, said. But the government’s explanation is certain to be questioned as several governors’ lodges are known for their use by their respective governors as political meeting points, with none ever sanctioned. The Akwa Ibom state Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro District of Abuja is currently hosting the secretariat of the PDP Governors’ Forum and meetings of the body holds there regularly. The PDP itself has an annex of its national secretariat, known as Legacy House, in the Maitama District of Abuja. The FCTA has never raised objection. Even the presidential villa, a national asset that should be a politically neutral facility, is used every now and then for meetings of the National Caucus and Board of Trustees of the PDP. Despite complaints by opposition parties, the PDP has never objected to the use of the villa for partisan meetings. Could this be abuse of power or simply because the laws of Nigeria, including INEC do not recognize the New PDP as a legal entity? Time shall tell in this epic face off. |

haibe: I thought I was the only one that see no use of ameobi, that guy shouldn't be a footballer. For crying out loud, why did Keshi went to invite Ameobi to the super Eagles at this stage of his career? When he was younger and had better, he rebuffed every invitation to play for Nigria, but was waiting to be capped at International level by England, but Queen Elizabeth and her people rejected him. Keshi must expalin to Nigerians what he sees in Ameobi which others do not see, afterall i have not seen any significant contribution he has made to the Eagles since his debut. We have better and stronger strikers in Nigeria and across the world. |
CAF has ran out of ideas to market African football, hence this stupid TV rights they are demanding, epecially when it comes to matches involving Nigeria. Issah Hayatou don craze. |
nerodenero: Funny enough,Nigeria will still allow Ethiopia pay a little to air the second leg despite this outrageous amount they are demanding from us.Talking about playing the big brother bullshitDon't get things wrong here. The right to broadcast the match does not reside with Ethopians, but CAF. Issah Hayatou, CAF president and his collaborators really want to kill hinder the growth of African Football. The same CAF that has divided or created a 'class' in West African football by dividing WAFU CUP into several parts, is same organ that is creating this chaos. |

bellong: Contrary to popular and erroneous belief about Love, Love is not a feeling or emotions. It is a decision. For the girl to at least get your attention in asking her out, it is obvious there is an evidence of attraction to her. What you need do is to study her and see if you can live with her character and attitude. Assess her overall qualities and weigh what you can live with and what you can't. If your assessment qualifies for what you can live with for the rest of your life, then you can start working on yourself to be the ideal husband to her. With time, you will get to like and develop the feelings missing now.@ Bellong, Amen. Thanks very much for your advise, suggestions and prayer. Grateful. |
