This forum has actually been of good part and parcel of some of my decisions with the advice I usually get from nairalanders comments for some while now.. I actually completed my Nysc last year and I actually got a job early this year with just a pay of 40k(at least more than the Fg minimum wage) in a small building construction firm. To be sincere it has not been easy with this salary for someone to save after feeding and transport of 16k on a monthly basis but I had to starve myself whenever the need arises to save 200k because there is assurance of job security in the company but I have been thinking of a small business that I can venture into and will be yielding me little things no matter how small it is cos having one source of income is a very risky path to tread? genuine advice needed please. pls I don't need any form of advice from MMM, internet business, money doublers and PM me members.

Say some 5years back, I used to be in the business, and I was quite lucky with it.

I specialized in hatching and raising them to the stage of fingerlings before selling them, then I would sell fingerling and juvenile for 10 and 20/25 naira respectively.

But then school and some other things happened in between.

Now, I wish to start again. Please would anyone be kind enough to help me out on or put me through some things?


1. For hatching, please which is best used?
Vat or tank or a small concrete pond. That is for this.

2. As against the price about 5years back, how much is ovaprim? Or is pituitary gland better?.

anyone is good what matters is the quality of water and the best is to make it flow in flow out.
Based on hormone pituitary gland is more cheaper and best acheived if you know the application very well but the most suitable is ovaprim based on research.

I have a 2 acre land in OGUN state but only a plot or two is on a swampy land, while the remaining is swampy. The land was once used for fish rearing.

The advice I need is these,what else can I do on the land apart from rearing fishes,learnt I can do vegetables etc but I don't know how to go through it.

Also, who knows where I can train myself about cat fish farming if decide to go into fish farminh, please note I reside in OGUN state, so wherever I'm going to learn about it must be near my place of residence.

if the plain land is total dry one you can do poultry farming on it and as well go for pig and cattle but if you still want the cultivation of vegetables just get yourself trained on it.

Cultivation covers: plantain, Maize, Cashew, Cassava, Moringa, Jathropha, Soy bean, Sesame etc and the other aspect is fruits and vegetables

I have little knowledge of the agricultural sector... The only knowledge I am vast at is in the livestock business... I will appreciate if you help with a list of other areas of interest you mean!

I will first say that the area you know about is most economical, profitable and easily managed with the technical know how of it known by investor. The other area are cultivation which is alittle technical and advanced except in the area of vegetables and fruits. The time or period of maturity is another thing to consider in cultivation which in livestock can be lesser and also be diversified for better yield of profit if you know it.

Pls come to my aids too.. I have passion in plataintion farming my choice is ilorin but i was told Ilorin isn't good for such can someone recommend a remote area where such is suitable.

Depend on your physibility survey on that area and how the available spaces suite your plan. OLAM is doing a great work on agriculture at Ilorin. but if you insist on your decision Oyo town is also good.Ogbomosho is as well good.

My candid opinion is that you need to first do a survey of the business on your own to know more about it and now check the status and standard of who to manage the business for you.what I mean is that is the person doing the job as his day to day work or just saying he/she can do by certificate or past experiences many bad people has spoil the future for the trust worthy ones but you can meet one by chances if you yourself is person of trust attitude.
So my best business to invest based on your past job experience and pursue and with my business experience with people of your job like(bankers) is Agriculture either livestock farming or Cultivation
it is only business that you can do in your absence and you will be able to know the end result based on unchangeable incubation period and the starting process can be with your presence. thanks.

These broiler birds were bought day old from CHI through a vet at the cost of 250naira in a chi branded cartons sealed, they will be 7weeks by friday 9th september yet dont look it. I feed very well and the enviroment is very conducive all I see is a slow growth in some stunted growth in others I visited the vet doctor and he was apologising claiming everyone that bought CHI then is complaining of slow and stunted growth what do I do.

What I will say just say is that be it CHI or no CHI you have do your booking from a practising Agro allied person not certified person because many people run into Agro allied now just because of the economy and to find ends meal. If the person is not practising and just doing the business that is one of the problems they do encounter even if that problem is not his or her fault but due to the fact is not professional in in by experience.You can get chick from many cry and have a good result regardless of being CHI or not what you need is the knowledgeThe pics you see bellow is from a coy not known with name and that is where I do purchase for myself andy client for the past 8years with greater result. Those you see are just 3weeks old. Anyone doing poultry business should know that there is no insurance coverage regardless of your professionalism or knowledge and with that you need to be a knowledgeable one interms of where, when to purchase from any cost with some internal assistance to guide you. So to those one you have just sell them off and have whatever you get from it not to lose the whole money and try to get another stock to start with. it is an experience that will push up in your next journey of poultry business don't be discouraged.thanks

Based on the post and little explanation I will say you need a knowledgeable consultant assistant to help you with the area market survey with the available resources you have for proper guide and risk management. The other is which everyone you eventually chose what is your own experience and knowledge about it? if you don't have that knowledge it require such consultant can help you through by giving you the mentorship under some months and you will take it up from there. please don't go into Agro allied without a good foundational knowledge so as not to lose your money. we raise other fish but what make catfish to be the most raised one are:
1.It has a wide pan-african distribution which even extend to Europe,Asia etc.i.e it can be found nearly in all nation of the world.
2. It has a unique character which is known as Sympatrical attitude which means it can decide to live,survive and adapt itself to an environment which isn't it's natural habitat just in pity of any family members (e. g Clarias anguilarus) .
3, It can convert anything in the water where it found itself to food. I. e. it adapt itself to supplementary feeding.
4.It has high market value with low feed conversion ratio mostly at a short or limited time.
5.It has a higher demand, diversify taste in processing and very attractive most especially in the immediate environment.
