The Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has mocked the federal government over its failed bid to get the United States government to deny him visa, saying with or without a trip to the US, the PDP will dislodge the President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) at next month’s election.

The former Vice President also dismissed as cock and bull story, the allegation by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed that he has a case to answer over the collapse of Platinum Habib Bank, Bank PHB.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu said the federal government should bury its head in shame having failed to stop him from travelling to the US.

He said it was shameful that the governing APC took it upon itself to call on the authorities of another country not to grant a private citizen entry visa, which ordinarily should not be its business.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed had, at the hint of the US granting Atiku visa last year, cautioned the Americans not to contemplate the gesture as it might give the impression that the foreign power is supportive of the opposition party’s candidate.

But Atiku, who arrived in the US on Thursday, said the APC was jittery knowing that its government has failed, stressing that Buhari’s days as president of Nigeria were numbered, which explains why members of the ruling party have been running from pillar to post.

According to the the Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigeria will join other countries of the world to experience a total lunar eclipse on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.

The media head, and public communications of the agency, Felix Alle, said this in a statement on Friday.

A lunar eclipse is a celestial incident where the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth’s shadow. It occurs only when the sun, and the moon are exactly aligned with the earth between the two.

“There will be a lunar eclipse over Nigeria on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019. The eclipse, expected to be total, will begin in the evening of Sunday and end on Monday.

The eclipse will start across Nigeria in the early hours of Monday at approximately 3:36 am to reach its maximum at 6:12am and end at about 6:43am. The total duration of the occurrence over Nigeria will be three hours and 15 minutes,” the statement read.

Felix Alle futher said that the lunar eclipse would, by 4.33am, become a partial eclipse, where the moon would start getting red.

He conclude that “at exactly 5.41am, a maximum eclipse of the moon which may be visible to human sight will be witnessed, while the moon eclipse is expected to end at 6.43am”. He said this year’s eclipse would be the last to be experienced until 2021.

15 people were killed when Islamist terrorists launched an attack on a luxury hotel in Kenya yesterday.

The terrorists fired shots as they barged into DusitD2 hotel complex in Nairobi on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 15, 2019. They were armed with bombs and guns.

Trapped civilians were seen escaping through a window at the hotel. Those who couldn’t escape sent messages out begging for medical help. At the scene, there was blood, shattered glass and bodies slumped over chairs.

The death toll is reported to be at 14. Eleven Kenyans, an American and a Briton were among the casualties, morgue staff said. Tje victims had not been identified.

It is feared that the death toll will rise once it is safe to go into the hotel.

Amina Bashir, a presenter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Network Centre, Kaduna and her one-year-old son died Saturday in a road crash along Pambegua-Jos road.

She was on her way to the NTA TV College in Jos, Plateau State, when the incident occurred.

Aisha was buried Saturday evening in accordance with the Islamic rites.

She is survived by her parents, siblings, husband and children.

Her colleague, who shared videos from the funeral described her as humble, kind and hardworking

The 4th PHEDC high tension wire has taken over Atimbo-Akpabuyo Road, the only linking Akpabuyo and Bakassi local government area with Calabar, Cross River State capital.

The road also link to Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo, first ever private University in the state and one of the faster growing and most affordable private varsity in Nigeria.

The electric cables has been there for about a week now following the destruction caused by the last rain which led to trees falling to break the poles holding the wires.

Our Correspondent who plied that last week said it was one pole that fell but the wire wasn’t closer to road the enough, but commuters were still meandering their way.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness, Mr. Akiba Ekpenyong who applied the road on Sunday evening said the situation is so pathetic in that two accidents has already occurred as drivers were trying to force their way through.

Akiba said, “Information from commuters indicate that it’s almost a week these poles had been here but unfortunately, within these days, no caution sign.”

He added that, “The fourth pole fell today morning.”

Akiba said he tried to warn the people, adding that he’d contacted the PHED, but the response was poor. “I did my best to inform them (PHED) verbally and they said they are not aware, but note, they are aware now.”

He continued, “Unfortunately, even while we were trying to put caution sign, two accidents happened. Some drivers too could kill your spirit with their attitude even abusing you as the cause.

“I would’ve cut off the cables but the Nigerian system would say you are vandalising PHED cables”, he said.

At the time of filing this report, our Correspondent was unable to reach the management of the PHEDC.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu yesterday declared that the decision of his group to boycott the 2019 elections will have Abia and Ebonyi states’ governorship elections as exceptions.

Kanu said that the reason behind the decision to participate in Abia and Ebonyi governorship elections is to remove Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and his Ebonyi counterpart, Dave Umahi whom he described as “enemies” of Igboland.

The IPOB leader, in his latest broadcast from Israel, said the accusation of kidnapping levelled by Umahi against IPOB is a sign of trying to justify the invitation he placed on the Nigerian Army to begin another phase of Operation Python Dance in the southeast.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on Nigerians to plead with President Muhammadu Buhari to have mercy on students by meeting its demands to end the strike started November 5 last year.

The ASUU, in a statement yesterday signed by University of Ibadan (UI) Chairman, Dr. Deji Omole, described the call by the Labour Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige, on the union to have mercy on students and call off its strike “a merciless utterance.”

According to Omole, the statement by the minister exposed government’s insincerity and callousness to the wellbeing of Nigerian students.

ASUU said since government was a continuum, it was regrettable that Ngige could say previous governments caused the problem of the strike by signing 2009 agreements.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja nominated Modibbo Hamman Tukur as a Director of the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement, said Tukur’s appointment was in accordance with the provision of Section 5(1) of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) Act 2018.

According to the statement, the appointment was contained in a letter dated January 7, 2019 and addressed to the Senate President, seeking the confirmation of the nominee by the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will train over one million electoral staff and ad-hoc personnel for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Mr Solomon Soyebi, Chairman, Board of Electoral Institute (BEI), made the disclosure on Monday in Calabar.

He stated this during a training workshop for State Training Officers and Assistant State Training Officers on Cascade Training Implementation for 2019 elections.

The workshop was organised by INEC in collaboration with the International Foundation of Electoral System (IFES).

Soyebi explained that 850,000 electoral personnel would be trained as polling unit officials, while 150,000 would consist of Civil Society Organisations and officials of security agencies officials.

‘‘With just about 39 days to the first election and about 53 days to the second one, it is very important that we train our people adequately.

“For the poll officials, we are going to train over 850,000 personnel.
