unnamed Sudanese minister was among 17 people arrested in Kampala Uganda for smoking water-pipe tobacco, popularly known as shisha.
The suspects were detained at Kabalagala Police Division but released today in the morning during suspects’ parade.

“He (the minister) only identified himself in the morning during suspects’ parade. He has been released after establishing his particulars,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire.

According to Ugadan laws, the owner of the bar in which the (shisha)tobacco was smoked faces a Ush20 million (approximately Ksh 547,000) and his or her licence suspended for at least six months.

Smoking of shisha is popular among the youth and many bars and entertainment places in the country are selling it despite the ban in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

Tanzania imposed a ban on shisha in July 2016, while Rwanda outlawed the practice through a public notice effective December 15, 2017.

In Kenya, a study done by the University of Nairobi notes that little is known about the composition of shisha consumed locally, making it prone to the possibility of adulteration with prohibited substances.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reacted to the activities of fraudsters who disguise as officers of the Commission and send scam mail to individuals, purporting such to be from the EFCC, with the aim of extorting money from them.

The Commission in its reaction said it 'has uncovered a number of email addresses, telephone numbers and websites used by unscrupulous persons to perpetrate such fraudulent activities, and is acting on them. In some instances, they send fraudulent emails, letters and make telephone calls to unsuspecting members of the public, by also impersonating government officials and organisations'.

'While alerting the public of these fraudulent activities, the EFCC states that anyone who enters into any agreement with any such impostor does so at his/her peril.

The EFCC has stated severally that none of its officers will demand for gratification to "kill" an investigation, and no operative will invite a suspect to any location apart from EFCC's designated offices, which can be found on its website.

Troops and air strikes have killed more than 280 Boko Haram militants since the Niger government started an operation against the group last week, the defence ministry said.

Boko Haram has attacked Niger, Chad and Cameroon from its base in northeast Nigeria, where it has been fighting for more than nine years to carve out an Islamist caliphate.

Niger’s defence ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the army mounted a sweep operation against the group last Friday along the south-eastern Komadugu river, which separates Niger from Nigeria.

More than 200 militants were “neutralized” by air strikes and 87 were killed by Nigerien troops on the ground, it said.

In June 2016, more than 30 Nigerien soldiers were killed during a Boko Haram attack on the town of Bosso, prompting Chad to send 2,000 troops to help its West African neighbour counter the militants, reports Reuters.

Those troops were withdrawn in October 2017, raising concern about security in the Diffa region.

Prophet T.B. Joshua has denied releasing any prophecy regarding Nigeria’s upcoming presidential elections in February 2019.

An article circulating on several online news sites in Nigeria alleged that the famed cleric had predicted success for Nigeria’s opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar during his annual New Year service.

A state governor of the PDP says the preparation of the party for the 2019 presidential election is riddled with deep frustrations.

He said his concerns for the party were also shared by other party leaders across the country, who were worried about the party’s shoddy preparations for the poll.

“It seems as if we have conceded the election to Buhari even though the Nigerian people are behind us. The momentum has fallen, the possibility of victory is getting slimmer every day,”the governor lamented.

The Nigerian Army on Monday dismissed as ‘untrue’ social media reports indicating the closure of the Maiduguri-Monguno Road.

Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, made the clarification in a statement in Maiduguri.
Nwachukwu said the reports were misleading as no such closure was announced by the military, adding that the road remained open to motorists and other users.

He disclosed that troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE had intensified patrols to ensure safety on the road and called on members of the public to disregard the report.

”The attention of the Headquarters, Theater Command, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, has been drawn to the information making the rounds in the social media and some online blogs that the road connecting Maiduguri and Monguno town in Borno State has been closed to motorists and other road users.

”This is untrue as no such closure has been imposed by the Theater Command.

Determined to ensure that governor Ben Ayade of Cross River obtain total victory in his reelection bid in the 2019 general elections, and other PDP candidates the leadership and members of the free Carwash campaign group, to embark on free sensitization campaign to central senatorial district for the collection of PVC from January 1, 2019.

Director General of the carwash campaign organization group, Mr. Portrait Peterson, who disclosed this in Calabar said that the campaign targetted at sensitizing electorates to go for their PVCs in preparation for the general elections in 2019.

Me. Peterson explained that the the sensitization campaign that will commence in Itigidi, the Council headquarters of Abi LGA of the state will feature the giving out of free fuel, kerosine, free Carwash and food bank to the people of the area.

He said that given the wonderful performances of the governor in this first tenure, it is natural and necessary that the people of the state give him overwhelming support and ensure his landlside victory in the 2019 gubernatorial elections.

The group’s DG further disclosed that it is on the bid to ensure a clean slate for the governor during the election that the group in it’s small way is.giving out free fuel, kerosin, carwash and food bank to the people.

Giving further insight to the campaign, Peterson explained that the group will go round the six LGAs of the centre senatorial district, and shall extend same to the northern and southern senatorial districts of the state with the electorates in these areas enjoying the same benefits that the central would be deriving from January 1, 2019.

The DG revealed that his group finds great joy in what it is doing, moreso that it’s activities is geared towards ensuring that governor Ayade gets reelected in 2019 through positive sensitization campaign to awaken the people of their responsibility, as well as the little contributions to the people in terms of the free fuel, kerosine, Free carwash and food bank.

Peterson therefore used the opportunity to wish everyone a prosperous New year with high hopes that the year 2019 is promising and holds great opportunities for all, especially supporters of Ayade and all other PDP candidates.
