I would have thought the 'know thyself' you referred to earlier was related to 'knowing limits'; meaning, have a bet but know when to stop. This to me is all the wrong advice for addictive personalities.

On the other hand, I feel the 'know thyself' taught at AA will be related to complete abstinence; meaning 'know that you are an addictive person and abstain completely'. This is what Ibime and I are talking about.
What I'm saying is not contradicting your posts. In fact it complements it. What I've been saying is this- it might not be enough to abstain from Gambling, your impulses might manifest in a different form - it could be drugs, it could be booze, it could be women.

I think that it's important continue to monitor ourselves and look out for behaviour and thought processes that lead to habit forming behaviour, that could crystallize into an addiction...for example, even something as benign as Nairalanding could be a serious addiction if left to spiral out of control.

I think this is theoretical observation. Practically speaking, have you ever met an addictive personality with self control? Or an addictive personality who knows thyself?
My wife is an assistant psychologist with G4S. These are the kind of people she deals with on a daily basis, especially within the criminal justice system. The concept of Know Thyself us at the heart of CBT.

That's exactly what they teach at AA or Gambling Anonymous meetings.

You need to know yourself and know your triggers and your limits first, before you can be free of addiction.

Otherwise you might abstain from Gambling but the same impulses will lead to you get addicted to even mojo.

That may be the case but gambling is slightly different.

When you start believing your smarter than the average Joe, you will feel your punts are based on research and knowledge rather than addiction. You will see arguments even on this thread saying they use smart methods in their betting, others don't know how to punt, they are not using sense etc.

I have seen otherwise stable people blow money on stock trading in the same way. No addictive personality, just believing they have better research or better quants.
nateevs:
Exactly. I have seen otherwise stable people blow money on the Forex Trading. I don't do the 'know thyself' preach. I am more of a 'understand why you are doing it' kinda guy. Like you said, when one's reasons are trending towards desperation, and the insatiable need to win, then the addiction may just have crept in.
Addictive personality does not show on the face, so how do you know for sure that these people are actually 'stable' in the first place?

Forex and many other forms of Trading are actually forms of betting in practice, the only difference is that the risk management strategy is decided at organisational level rather than individual level at hedge funds.

Individual traders are no really no different to bettors. You generally do your research, then you take a position and back it with your funds. You already know there is a risk of losing your money, but you have a strategy to mitigate your risk by either sticking to low risk, low returns trades/bets, or reducing the amount of money you are willing to spend.

Addictive personalities will often forgo the research bits and make moves based on hunches or gut feeling. These are the people that throw logic out of the window during their thought process. It won't show on the face bro.

That's why all man must know himself before they start any new ventures.

For every Greg Coffey, there's a Kweku Adoboli. Know thyself.

Ibime:
I know this from experience of loved ones, not myself. I would rather become an alcoholic than a gambler.

One of my good friends and football colleague called Kwame got into it. He was a smart boy right from college. We used to call him Calculus. 2004 UCL final, I accompanied him to bookies to place a £2 bet on Monaco v Porto, not knowing this is becoming a serious problem to him. To cut a long story short, I spent the next few years fielding phonecalls from his baby mama on how he is a degenerate dad, he steals money meant for the kids etc etc, and of course he dropped out of uni. Unfortunately for the babymama, she even went and got pregnant a 2nd time when it was already established that he is a degenerate. One day in 2007, we were on our way to play football on Saturday morning, we are already late for the match, he insisted he must stop and place bet. The niggas body was shaking like an addict. His brain was so consumed with the bet (or the shame that he couldn't even hide his addiction from me), he left the money in the ATM. I took the money from the ATM after he had walked away and gave him. It was £20. He walked into the bookies and bet it all. Cut a long story short, I stopped seeing Kwame around 2008, his life had turned into a sorry mess, a vagrant who was getting kicked out from house to house because of his problem. 2 years ago, I learnt his desperation drove him to become a drug mule, trying to fly with cocaine from Ghana to London. Needless to say, they caught him and slapped him with 6 years at her Majesty's Pleasure.

2nd experience, my junior brother was doing OK. He was working at the BBC, had a fiance, his own place, driving Audi TT etc etc etc. He was only 21 and even already had the deposit to buy his first flat. It was around 2007, when his colleagues took him to Casino for a fun night. Around 2008, we started hearing stories from his fiancé that he is becoming a degenerate. He could not account for money budgeted for this and that etc. 2008 Xmas, I called him upstairs and warned him that he will lose his fiancé, his life etc if he does not stop. To cut a long story short, he did not and lost everything but his life. He was sacked from his job for a reason he has not revealed till today, his fiancé kicked him out, he was couch-surfing with God knows who until we went and got him and carried him home to restart his life. He had to stay at home and incubate himself for many years to get himself back on track. We had to pay off so many credit card and bank defaults, red letters were coming through the post everyday. His total debt was around £7k. He struggled to beat his addiction, stealing my parents cash in the house, and even from his new employer that landed him in trouble with the police, but thankfully not in jail. To cut long story short, he was not even allowed access to his own bank account. My popsie had to control his bank account, fill his fuel tank for the week, then give him only £20 for the week. And this is my brother's own money he was working for, yet being babysat like a 3 year old. Cut a long story short, after years of Gamblers Anonymous, micromanagement of his finances and movements, he seems to be alright. But you know with gamblers, you can never tell what they will do when you're not with them.

In summary, I advise anyone against gambling. Some people can manage a small weekly involvement and make it seem fun, but they don't tell you about the other side. It is especially bad when your gambling is driven by desperation to make money. In Nigeria now, most of our youths have become degenerates over this gambling stuff. It is mostly due to the socio-economic condition of the country. They act out of desperation just like the MMM participants, but they don't publicised the human cost of this disease in Nigeria. So my advice to all our young men is run away from it, and don't be enticed by these ninjas publicising odds and winnings etc.
Mehn these are terrible stories. I'm sorry to hear that these things happened to your friends and family, but the truth is that both people, from the description you gave anyway, seem to have addictive personalities.

If the gambling didn't hook them, it could have been drugs, it could have been alcohol, it could have been sex....

I also have witnessed the deterioration of close ones hooked in the throes of some addiction

I personally don't think gambling, drugs, alcohol and so on are necessarily bad, and I indulge each of these vices on occasion - but I know myself, and I know my limit, and I'm confident to say I don't have an addiction to any of them.

That's the only thing I can add to your message, it is extremely important to know thyself. Know Yourself.

Once again, sorry to hear about your friend and brother.

Nihilist and other gamers pls what do you guys know about the Razer Raiju and the Nacon Revolution and which is better?
And are they significantly better than regular dual shock?
I read the reviews when they came out and their not very good. I think the DS4s are as close to solid as controllers come. The only issue with them is that the rubber cover for the analog sticks are not very durable...though these are very easy and cheap to replace.

The undisputed best controller out there is the Xbox elite. You can buy an PS4 adapter for it for use on your machine.

Best of luck
