pamcode: Of course bruyne isn't a novice but the whole team are novice at playing Pep style compared to Barca. Let me ask you this. Assuming you hadn't seen that clip before, and you saw only up to where KDB received the ball and someone asked you what would happen next... Would you predict that: A KDB turns and passes to Kolarov in space on his left B KDB turns and passes the ball to Busquets on his right |

pamcode: All you mentioned up there are signs of an unblended team and was due to the off - ball marking of Barca meaning there was hardly no time to look around to release the ball to others you got to have a mental position of where your team mates are and Release quickly. That was not a characteristic of any unblended team..those were simple brainfarts. You could pack 10 men in the box, but fernandinho would fall down and give Messi a free chance at goal. You could pack 10 men in the box and an errant kdb back pass would still open up a tightly packed defence. These are errors that can happen independent of tactics. So trying to qualify these individual errors as products of poor tactics is not on...especially when the players making these stupid errors are world class players that should actually know better. |

pamcode: Look at the 2nd Gif for example. First guy passed to his mate and was quickly pressured by Barca players, fellow panicked and tried to quickly pass but he was dispossessed, am sure when he received the pass he had no immediate person in mind to pass to. That second guy was KDB...if it was a novice, this excuse would hold. |

pamcode: last two of Messi came from a city player misplacing a pass to his team mate. To me they haven't quite mastered the art of passing the ball under pressure and to make things worse they met the masters of the style. You mean Gundogan and KDB have not mastered the art of passing under pressure? Gundongan wasn't even under pressure when he made that stoopid pass. KDB had a very open passing lane to Kolarov in acres of space to his left. Both chose to make ediotic decisions...which are uncharacteristic of them anyway. |

pamcode: Yeah they lost but at least not this bad and their past meetings took place in the 2nd round and higher. In the past they lost because they were out played yesterday they lost because they made silly errors trying to play a style the other team were better at. I strongy disagree with this bit Origin of the 1st goal Origin of the second goal Origin of the 3rd Can you please point out which one of these goals were cause by 'trying to play a style the other team were better at'? As far as I can see, none of these mistakes came from attempting intricate passing moves. |

larride: I have been going through all the comment since the match ended and no one has actually pointed out the tactics which Pep used in this particular match. Guardiola always had a trick up his sleeve, though, and here City managed to transform into a three‑man defence with and without the ball, in two ways. In possession Pablo Zabaleta would drift inside to become an extra central midfielder, turning City from a 4-1-4-1 to a 3-2-4-1. It was a tactic witnessed earlier in the season but appeared to have been ditched – trust Guardiola to revive the system away at this season’s Champions League favourites. That approach did not affect the game significantly but City’s pressing was extremely impressive – and again that resulted in them shifting temporarily to a three‑man defence. Ilkay Gündogan moved forward to join De Bruyne pressing the opposition centre‑backs, Nolito and Raheem Sterling shut down Barça’s full-backs while David Silva and Fernandinho marked Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta respectively. This left the third central midfielder, Ivan Rakitic unmarked so, when the ball was in Barça’s left-back zone, Nolito moved inside to shut him down. However, when Nolito needed to press the makeshift right-back Javier Mascherano, John Stones would step forward, becoming an additional midfielder, to shut down Rakitic. This left three City defenders to cope with the fabled front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar. Nevertheless the pressing was effective at stopping the service into them – at half-time Barça’s three forwards had completed only 20 passes between them. Guardiola had succeeded in starving Barcelona’s best players of the ball.https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/oct/20/pep-guardiola-trick-barcelona-manchester-city-etihad |

Right click on the image you want to embed (presumably on a website) and select 'copy image address' 2. Start a new post on Nairaland and click on the 'insert image button'. It's the one next to the red A in the editing ribbon 3. Paste the image address url in the [img][/img] c'est fini p.s only works with http links. so drop the extra 's' if you're embedding from a website that employs encryption |

He is described as "A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER with a box to box style of play, contributing in large part to the defense and the attack. With a powerful shot and great passing range, Fernandinho has played an important part in breaking up opposition attacks and creating goal scoring opportunities"

You know what he is mate....stop with the gimmicks! The very same sentence describes him as a box-to-box midfielder. Abi is this not the same Wikipedia? Like we have not seen a team beat barca with a red card..
It could have easily been 7,Neymar miss PK sef.....This is Pep in every big game, embarrassing score lines from all angles Once you're a goal and a man down against Barca, it's practically over. And Pep cannot be expected to account for the utter stewpidty of Bravo when formulating his tactics. I say go to the Barca thread and see where Barca fans were openly musing if they had a midfield during the match. Bravo killed city today, aided and abetted by John Stones |

donjazet: I guess you were trying a subtle shade/dig but boy am I glad it backfired Fernandinho played dm today, I don't know what you are saying. As for your earlier statement about balance. Chelsea is very much imbalanced but I am glad conte has discovered a unique formation that tries to bring out the best of this squad. You might as well pull me up for saying city had no striker despite playing KDB upfront. There's a difference between a players natural position and where he plays on the pitch. I didn't want to go into a cheap discussion similar to the Macsherano debate on thr Bayern thread because I felt the meaning of my post was pretty obvious. I agree with your second post and that's the point that I was trying to make. Forget out balance, it's about how the manager sets up his team...tactics is the key difference between a Pep and a Pellegrini. It's a shame it disn't quite work out for him today though. |

Ibime: Maybe you possess little sense of danger, or little sense of space on a football pitch.
I can watch a match where a team look to be playing well and know thet will get hammered just by the amount of space they afford the opponent. Pep specialised in that whenever he took Bayern to face Barca. You did not watch the match at all so you don't know what happened...you can only speculate based on scores. Go to the Barca thread and read the comments during the game to have a real understanding of what was going on. |

You have Messi and co running at your defenders with so much space, what tactics is that? Until that red card, Messi et al were not seeing space at all. That lucky goal was the only shot on target Barca had that half and they only managed 3 shots the entire first half...and that included a freekick. |

The difference is that Fernandinho usually play as a DM for City while KDB was just used as a false nine in this particular match.
whether Pep use 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1, Fernandinho either plays as the DM or as the B2B if Fernando is on the pitch, claiming otherwise means you don't watch any City matches or you just want to argue for fun.
Show/List any match/matches where Fernandinho plays as the CM.

Even in this same match, he was the DM while Gundogan was the b2b.
I ask again, how did Pep not use a DM? Nihilist does not own tranfermarkt website bro so I don't understand this aggression. You can play in a pivot and not be a DM, ask Santi Cazorla, Ander Herrera or Fabregas. You can be the deepest midfielder for your team and still not be a DM, ask Pirlo. Fernandinho is not a DM.
