Bonjour à tous (ou bonsoir - c'est à vous de choisir)

In the course of studying for the TEF, for section A of l'expression orale, I found it very difficult to find about 10 relevant questions to ask for each given ad (on top the french itself wey I still dey battle with). Thus, I've made a compilation (if you can call it that) of sample questions that one can ask for some ads I've come across for easy reference while studying. They were gotten from different sources - the TEF books, YouTube (Enseignement du FLE, Propulse Training) and some documents I found on Scribd.

I'm in an abnormally good mood so I want to share this, maybe you can even make some corrections and provide other possible questions one can ask. Donc, click here to download sample questions for section A of expression orale

It's not exhaustive...I'm open to corrections.

Thanks for this post. I too have never stepped foot in an alliance francaise class so it's encouraging to know I have hope.

Bellerin:

YES! you would be amazed what you can do in 8 months...i Started learning French in 2014...passed the DELF B2 in 2015. Everything via self study (the first time I sat in an alliance Français class was when I took the exam)
My French still needs plenty of work but from the way the TEF exam is structured...You CAN get a healthy number of points from it. So keep going!

My dear, the ball is in your court. Learning french from scratch is not easy but it's definitely doable if and only if you can put in the work. Check @mariah203's posts...I believe they have a faster curriculum at Alliance Française.

I'm yet to write the test o...I'm even trying to boost my morale sef...I dey fear die (who send me message) but I know I've made a lot of progress from when I first started. And yes people do pass the test, I met a lady who did. You can also check canadavisa forum for other people's experience. Again go through the previous pages, some people have shared their experience here.
jessicahardman:

Hey, bro/sis,

do you think i can learn french in 8 months and pass it. I called Alliance Française and was told that i can learn french in 2 years if I hope to pass the TEF exam. that killed my drive to learn it then.

I need 12 points , can I learn this French within 8 months? your sincere opinion needed. Do people pass the TEF exams?

Only you can decide if you will be ready for the exam in Jan...Study the materials front to back and inside out to know exactly what is required to pass the exam, then assess yourself to know if you can get CLB 7 by then. My motto is to never say never. Anything is possible if you can put in the work.

Yettytouch:

thank you very much etrange for starting this thread, i stumbled on this page from google search, whilst looking for TEF details.im also hoping to improve my CRS score with french.
pls educate me, do i need to get CLB 7 in french in other to get the 30 points for other languages? or CLB 4 is ok to get the 30 points?

Your A2 level is enough if you study and practise the test format vigorously. Study the TEF books front and back and if you have the money, subscribe to the prepmyfuture app as recommended by @mariah203. Also check out the Enseignement du FLE channel on YouTube, they have some TEF practice tests avec corrigés.

If you ask me, my own level is A1 sef, but the TEF tests I've practised, my scores are slightly above average, still working to improve it sha. It's the expression ecrite and orale that I can't accurately assess now.

Bonne chance! Tout ira bien!

This is really sad...the need to study the test prep materials cannot be overemphasized.

Merci mille fois pour les astuces. Aluta continua!

Mamaroon:

Vous êtes prêts...allez...let's go Nov 24.

God speed mon ami(e)...pls look through the exam structure materials.

There was a guy in the last exam that thought TEF listening was like IELTS listening.... he wasn't shading the answers as he went along and wanted to start shading when they said "pens up"....no time after the tape finishes to input your answers unlike the English test!

Also no headphones. Also some conversations/announcements are played once. Some 2x but the second time round a different question is being asked. So you may hear a convo...1st question is who is speaking....you hear it again...2nd question is who was she talking to.

The struggle for those 30 points is real o...your french must be good though if you got these scores without studying. I've been studying for almost 6 months...still not confident enough...quand même, je vais le passer. I'm also waiting for their last session for the year.

Happy studying!

Mamaroon:

mehn!!! it helps to study o...so pls try to understand the exam structure and practice. just like for IELTS concentration is key for listening.

difficulty depends on your previous exposure to French.

I didn't study and I wasn't surprised by my poor score in writing CLB4/B1. reading and speaking...i actually got CLB7 and CLB8 /high B2 and low C1....which surprised me... suspect the local guys are lenient on the speaking - because I know my grammatical errors can "wound" an innocent passer-by tongue....my listening was CLB6/low B2...

I did 2 French courses (optional) in Uni many years ago so i learnt a bit more than JSS or SS level. I think attending alliance francais will help with writing....but for me....i need those 30 points o by God's grace...will redo the last one for the year...I'm planning to school myself with google and you tube and TV5 on dstv channel 437...other family duties will not permit me to go for lessons.

....adult education "tings"

Bonne chance!

Ok...merci beaucoup...but if I may ask how would you rate the test in terms of difficulty...any specific tips for novices like me
Mamaroon:

Yes it was TEF....took it in July 2018...

there are 2 questions. One scenario was that I'm going on a ski holiday and I need to convince a friend to go with me. the examiner will pose as the friend and ask plenty questions or keep giving reasons why he can't go.

the second was that I'm organising a party on a multimedia bus...call the business that rents the bus and ask questions.

Whew...Ok...thanks a lot for this

Cyberknight:

Lol. Fear not, this is TEF. I'm not confusing it with DALF because I took it 2 years ago, but took DALF in 2004 and have fully forgotten all about that exam's structure. Its basically what I said - you are given short texts to read and say something relevant about. I don't remember whether or not the texts were adverts, but that makes no difference anyway, text is text.

Of course the examiner asks you questions, that is a given in any oral exam.
Travel / Re: All TEF Candidates For Canada Immigration, Let's Meet Here! by njbybrthnly: 11:18am On Sep 12, 2018
Hi Mamaroon,

Was it the TEF that you took? If yes, do you still remember the questions you were asked for the expression orale?

Mamaroon:

From my experience in Lagos...i had about 10 to 15 mins.

They called me up and gave me the question but they had not finished with the previous candidate so I had time.

Travel / Re: All TEF Candidates For Canada Immigration, Let's Meet Here! by njbybrthnly: 11:11am On Sep 12, 2018
Is this TEF or DELF/DALF? The format I've seen for TEF is quite different. For Section A, an ad is presented, and you're asked to ask around ten questions to get more information (with your examiner playing the role of your interlocutor). Section B, another ad is given to you, and you are supposed to present it to your friend (played by your examiner) and convince him to do or take part in whatever is presented.

If this is TEF, when did you take the test please?

don't tell me I've been studying the wrong thing since o
Cyberknight:

Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly, but you will be given a short text to read and think over and then you say something logical and relevant about it in French. It's usually simple when you are reasonably well prepared (in my case it was a text about a missing dog and I was asked to put myself in the owner's shoes and say something about it - so I talked about how it felt losing my dog, notifying neighbours to look out for it, going out to search for it, etc.).

Basically, the examiners are usually patient with you because they know that oral expression is naturally the weakest point of any non-immersed learner's repertoire, so it doesn't really matter if you stumble and search for the right words, just make sure you use the words/register you do find competently. Feel free to speak slowly - remember that its a test of working knowledge, i.e. ability to communicate in a foreign land without constantly asking for someone who speaks English, and not fluency.

The important thing is to get your message across in French and make yourself understood. Once you calm down and take your time you'll scale through.

Best of luck.

You don't need to do ECA for your spouse if your CRS score is high enough to get ITA. @ the bolded if your spouse has a degree there is no need to lie about it...simply state that it's not assessed

Please is it compulsory to do ECA for spouse especially if you have adequate crs score? For spouse I chose non or secondary education just so we don’t do ECA

Hallo everyone,

I note that most of you here have either taken the DALF or DELF or have some advanced French knowledge, so to further reassure you all, believe me when I say the TEF Canada is not a difficult exam; it is not designed to be. To put it into perspective, as a native English speaker, you will find TEF easier than IELTS. Again, DALF is a more difficult exam than TEF, as it is supposed to give access to French university studies, while TEF is simply a measure of working knowledge.

As language learners you will be familiar with the concept that "comprehension is always easier than expression", so its easier for language learners to understand written language first, than spoken language second, before they gradually come to expressing themselves, first in written, then in spoken language. Most people's language learning outside an area where the language is in daily use follows this pattern, so my advice would be to focus on both written and oral expression which are likely to be most people's weak points (mine too).

When I was learning French, our instructor taught us to spend as little time actually studying and more time in immersion. In other words, listen to French TV and radio (TV5 on DSTV or the CCTV French), read the French papers online (lemonde.fr, lesoir.be, etc.) and the rest will flow naturally. I must say it worked for me. Get a comprehensive book on French grammar (if you're considering writing TEF you should have grammar already at your fingertips anyway) and practice writing in French by drafting a copy of your daily communications (SMS, WhatsApp messages, etc.) in French all the time, and you should be fine.

Good luck to all.

Hi Cyberknight,

Thank you a million times for the bolded. Yours is the first positive review of the TEF I've seen (And believe me I've searched high and low and for a long time too...everyone else has been of the view that the TEF is unnecessarily difficult)

Thanks for the other suggestions as well.

Ok, I was not totally accurate but then again, we do not need up to CLB7 in French to make points provided French is not the primary language.

In more detail, NCLC7, NCLS8 and NCLC9 are the required levels for those presenting French as a primary language. In June last year (as can be seen in the picture you shared), it was stated that if you have NCLC7 (lowest of the three), you can still augment your points by scoring up to CLB4 or CLB5 in English (non of which is acceptable if English is your first language). On the other hand, CLB7, CLB8, CLB9 and CLB10 are the acceptable levels for those presenting English as a primary language. However, you get additional points if you make up to NCLC5 in French (which is not acceptable if French is your fist language). The aim here is to awrd those who know both languages fairly enough.

In addition, NCLC and CLB are not really similar in grading. NCLC5 is similar to CLB5 but the score ranges differ a little. Compare the chats below to understand more. From the chat, NCLC5 is between CLB5 and CLB6 and CLB6 is Intermediate 1 which is equivalent to DELF B1 standard. Hence the validity of what the instructor told me at Alliance Francaise.

Correct me where I am missing it.

Honestly, I had to go through your post more than once before I understood it (at least I think I did grin)...but I wasn't just talking about the points you get based on your score. Besides those points you get 30 extra points if you get NCLC 7 in the TEF equivalent to DELF B2...some of us need more than 16 points before we can even dream of getting ITA...play with the CRS tool to see what I mean...this is how i understood it...I could be wrong sha

Let me go back to their website to be sure

Canadian immigration is asking for CLB4 if French is presented as a second language. This can be likened to B1 according to the information I got at Alliance Francaise.

So the question is, can you attain B1 in 8 months?

You need CLB 7 in order to get additional 30 (or 15) points for French language skills. See here
