The formal declaration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, on Sunday, may have finally put paid to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s chances of securing a second term in office, Daily Independent has learnt.

Multiple sources in the party told our correspondent on Monday that the governor was in Abuja last weekend making a frantic bid to prevail on party leaders to persuade Asiwaju Bola Tinubu not to allow the declaration to proceed.

“The rally was scheduled to hold at Skypower, opposite Police College in Ikeja, but the leaders of the Mandate Group who are solidly behind Sanwo-Olu, got a hint that there are plans to disrupt the event. That was when they agreed to move it to City Hall on Lagos Island,” said a party leader who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Speaking further, he said: “When Ambode’s people got wind of the fact that the rally will no longer take place at Police College on Saturday evening, they thought Asiwaju (Tinubu) had instructed them to stop the Sanwo-Olu project and collapse the structure for the embattled governor.

“However, much to their chagrin, the rally went ahead and even surpassed their expectations because many party bigwigs flew in from Abuja to attend the declaration.

“Even Senator Ashafa who was one of the three senators who had earlier endorsed Ambode was seated on the high table on Sanwo-Olu’s declaration. That goes to tell you that there is no going back on this project.

“With the declaration by Sanwo-Olu and inauguration of his campaign committee, Governor Ambode must be kidding to believe there is any hope for him to get the support of the Mandate Group again. He is 90 percent gone.”

Also speaking with our correspondent, a leader in the Mandate Group said the governor’s fate had been sealed a long time ago after he failed to address the complaints and grievances of party leaders whose economic lifelines had been gravely affected by his policies.

He said he was aware that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of APC, was with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Sunday evening but he (Tinubu) was still insisting that he would respect the decision of the party elders who were against Ambode’s re-election.

“The governor’s case has been decided a long time ago. Nothing can change anything again. We gave him ample time to correct his steps but I think pride overtook him and he chose to forget his source, those who assisted him to where he is.

“It is not about the party elders or Asiwaju Tinubu. It is about Lagosians who are bearing the brunt of Ambode’s policies. Look at the refuse heaps everywhere which could have led to a great epidemic if not that something drastic was done by Asiwaju who quickly intervened,” the source said.

When asked if the political situation would not affect the party’s chances in the forthcoming general elections, he said: “It will not affect APC’s chances at all. Lagos APC is one united family. Wherever Asiwaju leads us, we go.

“He has told us it is Muhammadu Buhari for presidency and Jide Sanwo-Olu for governor. On that we stand, and Lagosians are with us on this.”

Speaking with Daily Independent, Yinka Odumakin said the crisis between Governor Ambode and the party leaders in Lagos was all about vested interests and not about the welfare of Lagosians.

“It is their internal affairs. They have been conducting their affairs in Lagos and it is now a normal thing every four years. Remember what happened during the second term of Babatunde Fashola. I think they have to sort themselves out.

“Lagosians will have to make up their minds at the polls whether they are enjoying what is happening in their state and they want a continuity of such or they want a change totally different from what they have now.

“Because what is at play is clearly vested interests. Sheer vested interests. In Lagos today, you can count the number of roads that are motorable. That has been the same tendency since about 20 years ago.

“When you remove Bourdillon Road, Igando Road, Kudirat Abiola Road and you ply other roads, if you bring a brand new car to Lagos in one year, you will start changing shock absorbers. That has not featured in their arguments.

“There are schools in Lagos today where students still sit on bare floors. Look at the huge refuse we see in most parts of Lagos State today.

“I don’t know anywhere in Lagos today where people drink pipe-borne water. The last time I used water in my former house was in 2005 and a human finger came out of the tap. Yet that has not come up in the whole of this argument.

A priest in Kenya has been suspended for misconduct after rapping in church.

Fr Paul Ogalo had been using rap music to attract youths to Church and spread messages against drugs and in favour of social justice issues.

After Mass, Fr Ogalo would change from his vestments into a white shirt, black shorts, and a red bandana, begin to rap for the congregation, who danced along to the music.

“We need to take care of the interests of youths in our churches,” he said. “We need to change the way we do things.”

Church youth leader Violet Menya said not only do many young people come to church because of the rap music, they keep coming back.
“We are happy that his style of preaching is attracting many youths to church. He has mentored very many youths to leave … drug abuse and embrace farming, business and other activities,” Menya said.

Benard Oketch, a 28-year-old member of the congregation said he will stop attending church because of the priest’s suspension.

“Fr Paul has been our mentor. He uses the language youths understand,” Oketch said. “[Fr Ogalo] has saved thousands of youths” from drug abuse.

However, the bishops of the diocese have rejected these practices, saying they are against Church doctrine.

Father Charles Kochiel, the judicial vicar of the inter-diocesan tribunal of Kisumu, said Fr Ogalo is suspended for a year in order to “reconsider his ways.”

“There are ways of doing things,” Fr Kochiel said. “There are certain things the Church promotes in the society. If we mix … what the secular and church institutions do, then definitely people are going to read different messages.

Those in favour of the suspension argued that his actions are unbiblical and cannot be justified through mere popularity.

“People could be looking at it from the social point of view, like bringing people on board, gathering and entertaining people. But people could also be looking at this from the spiritual point of view: Does it promote spiritual values or is it sending a wrong message?” Fr Kochiel said.

A faction of the All Progressives Congress in Imo State has gone ahead to conduct the state congress of the party on Saturday, despite a federal High court of Owerri order stopping the exercise.

There was tension in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Saturday as the operatives of the state police command numbering over 200 with about 20 operational vehicles barricaded the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress.

APC secretariat, located at Imo State University junction in Owerri, including roads linking to the building, were blocked as the arms-bearing policemen guarded the area.

The policemen were believed to be acting on the instruction of the new state commissioner of police, Dasuki Galadanchi, to stop the APC state congress following the court order.

Our correspondent observed that while the stern-looking policemen maned the APC secretariat, all the officials of the party, including members of staff, avoided the secretariat.

The Police Public Relations officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, said that the Police were determined in ensuring that the court order was obeyed by all members of the party in the state.

According to the Police spokesperson, the Police would arrest anybody “who tried to defy the court order in order to conduct the state congress.”

But in order to beat the Police security, APC members who are not in tandem with the state governor conducted the state congress in an undisclosed venue despite an order of a federal high court stopping the congress.

The APC state chairman, Hilary Eke, said that the idea was to ensure that security agencies who had become partisan did not truncate the exercise.

Eke, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone from an undisclosed venue, said that over 1,500 delegates from the 305 wards of the state were electing state executive members of the party under the supervision of officials from the national secretariat, and members of staff of Independent National Electoral Commission.

Eke said, “Over 1,500 delegates have elected the state executives".

“The venue of the congress was not disclosed because of security reasons."

“INEC officials and officials of the party from Abuja are here."

“Okorocha is not part of the Congress; the delegates are the ones electing the state executive."

“The Congress is very peaceful and we are working hard to make sure that the people take back Imo APC.”

But state secretary of APC, Obioma Ireagwu, said that Eke, who was suspended for alleged anti-party activities, risked a jail term for defying an order of a court of competent jurisdiction.

The party scribe maintained that the party would ensure that those who took part in what he described as “flagrant disobedience to an order of the court” face the full wrath of the law.

He said that in due course, the party would conduct its congresses, starting from the ward to the state level.
