CrimeHow The Police Extorted Printivo Employees by nlfpmod(mod): 3:42pm On Dec 16, 2024
Years back. Men of the Nigeria Police broke into my ad agency’s office in Ikeja… and arrested my creative team for working overnight in their own office. It wasn’t an unbranded business. There was signage everywhere, they had staff ID cards, they were working on a campaign we needed to ship that weekend. It was obvious this is an office.

I was in SF when my phone rang. @ICONOREOLUWA who the then creative director was on the phone. Spent the next couple of hours calling everyone I knew. Ore was also doing everything to end the madness. My wife also running around.

The police didn’t care despite everything they were shown. They named their price. It was a Friday. If you don’t pay the team would sleep there that weekend. People who have done absolutely nothing wrong.

Again… the Nigeria Police is Nigeria’s worst creation.

CrimePolice Arrested My Son For Dyeing His Hair In Nigeria - IrishNaija by nlfpmod(mod): 10:54am On Dec 16, 2024
A UK-based Nigerian Engineer, Irish Naija, has supported Kemi Badenoch after she said the police in Nigeria robs people while recalling how the police stole her brother's shoes and watch.

Here is Irish Naija's story:

I used to run a kitchen in Yesufu Abiodun, Oniru, where I supplied food to banks and offices in Victoria Island, Lagos. My 15-year-old son often helped with deliveries, as he had just completed his WAEC exams in 2018. On one particular day, we had a delivery close to our house. Since it was nearby, he went without the driver, carrying the food and our POS machine.

Tragically, the Nigerian police abducted him, confiscated his phone, and took him to the anti-cultism unit in Gbagada. We searched everywhere in Victoria Island, unaware that he had been taken so far away. Eventually, they allowed him to call me, and his terrified voice broke me: “Mummy, are you on your way? I’m so scared.”

My husband and I, along with our lawyer, rushed to the station. At the gate, they took our phones, and then I saw my son—half-naked and sitting on the ground with over 100 others outside the station. I collapsed in tears. My husband, who is British, demanded to see the DPO and asked him directly: “What offense are you charging my son with?” The boy hadn’t been allowed to explain himself, yet the food and POS machine were right there at the station. The DPO’s response? “Because he dyed his hair.” That was it. Nothing more.

In the end, we were forced to pay for his release. This incident was a turning point for my husband, who decided that we couldn’t continue living in Nigeria.

What made this even more painful was the nature of our family. My children were homeschooled, had no social circles outside the family, and never went anywhere without us. They were raised in a closely-knit environment. At the time of this ordeal, I was seven months pregnant, and the trauma of the experience caused me to go into premature labor, resulting in an emergency C-section.

My son’s only “crime” was being a hardworking boy, helping with his parents’ legitimate business—a business that provided employment for Nigerians. For my husband, a white British man, to witness such injustice firsthand was a harrowing experience.

Many of us have bitter, painful stories about the Nigerian system. Yet when we speak out and tell the truth, we are accused of defamation or subjected to cyberbullying. It’s truly heartbreaking.
I personally say that Kemi should be left alone, she is saying exactly what she experienced and if I'm asked anywhere in the world the same question, I will narrate my ordeal, so will every member of my family!

BusinessOld And New Naira Notes Remain Valid — CBN by nlfpmod(mod): 11:47am On Dec 14, 2024
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated that both the old and redesigned naira notes of N1,000, N500, and N200 denominations will remain legal tender indefinitely, putting to rest rumours of a 31 December deadline for the phasing out of the old notes.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Ali, the bank cited a Supreme Court ruling delivered on 29 November 2023, which permits the concurrent circulation of all versions of the affected denominations without any deadline.

It said the clarification follows widespread misinformation regarding the validity of the old notes.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has observed the misinformation regarding the validity of the old N1000, N500, and N200 banknotes currently in circulation.

“In line with the Bank’s previous clarifications and to offer further assurance, the CBN wishes to reiterate that the subsisting Supreme Court ruling granted on 29 November 2023 permits the concurrent circulation of all versions of the N1000, N500, and N200 denominations of the Naira indefinitely.

For the avoidance of doubt, all versions of the naira, including the old and new designs of N1000, N500, and N200 denominations, as well as the commemorative and previous designs of the N100 denomination, remain valid and continue to be legal tender without any deadlines,” the bank stated.

The CBN urged the public to disregard claims suggesting the old series of these denominations would cease to be valid at the end of this year.

Instead, it advised Nigerians to continue accepting all naira notes, whether redesigned or otherwise, for daily transactions.

The bank also encouraged the adoption of alternative payment methods such as electronic channels to reduce the pressure on physical cash usage.

PoliticsDisbar Dele Farotimi - Afe Babalola Tells LPDC by nlfpmod(mod): 10:47am On Dec 13, 2024
Afe Babalola’s law firm has asked the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to disbar Dele Farotimi, a human rights advocate, for alleged unethical conduct.

The firm wrote a 90-page petition dated December 6, 2024 and signed by Ola Faro, a partner in the firm.

LPDC is a committee established by the Legal Practitioners Act and charged with upholding ethical standards in the legal profession.

Faro told the LPDC that he wrote the petition in his personal capacity “and for and on behalf of the law firm of Afe Babalola & Co”.

The lawyer was also mentioned in Farotimi’s book titled: ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’.

Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria, and some lawyers in his firm, had alleged that Farotimi “criminally” defamed them in his book.

In the petition, the firm accused Farotimi of engaging in “conduct which is unbecoming of a legal practitioner by making false accusations against the Supreme Court and the legal profession”.

The chamber said Farotimi’s book discredited the Nigerian judiciary and judges.

The petitioner said the book also dented the hard-earned reputation and financial credit of the firm.

The respondent participated in conduct that he believes to be unlawful by bribing judicial officers and having unlawful access to a judicial officer,” the petition reads.

“Joined his clients in committing misconduct and breach of law with reference to judicial officers by having unlawful access to a judicial officer.

“Gave service to his client which he knows is capable of causing a breach of law and disrespect and corrupting a judicial officer.

Knowingly made false statements of law and facts in respect to a case already decided by the Supreme Court.

“Assisted his clients in a conduct that he knows to be illegal and fraudulent. Knowingly engaged in illegal conduct in the cause of his practice as a legal practitioner.

“Treated his fellow lawyers without respect, fairness, consideration and dignity, allowing ill-feeling between opposing clients to influence his conduct and demeanour by distorting the facts of a case in the cause of his practice as a legal practitioner.

“Failed to observe good faith and fairness in dealing with other lawyers in respect to a case already decided by the Supreme Court.

“Conducted himself in a manner that obstructed, delayed and adversely affected the administration of justice by taking steps to frustrate a decision of the Supreme Court for his personal benefit and benefit of his client who lost at the Supreme Court.

“Treated the court, particularly the Supreme Court without respect, dignity and honour by using uncouth, unprofessional, undignified and offensive language against the Supreme Court and the justices of the Supreme Court.

“Made defamatory statements against judicial officers rather than making a complaint to appropriate authorities.

“Indicated that he discussed a pending case with a judge trying the case in the absence of an opposing lawyer.”

TRIALS OF FAROTIMI

On December 3, Farotimi was arrested in Lagos by officers attached to the Ekiti police command, over alleged defamation and cyberbullying.

The accused is currently facing trial in two courts on charges bordering on alleged defamation of Babalola.

On Monday, a federal high court in Ekiti granted Farotimi N50 million bail with one surety, following a 12-count charge bordering on cybercrime filed by the inspector-general of police.

However, a magistrate court in Ekiti on Tuesday reserved ruling in Farotimi’s bail application to December 20.

The activist is currently being remanded in an Ekiti prison.

Her follower, Arojinle, explains the type of snake:

The venom of this snake can kill a man within 15 minutes! It is an Egyptian cobra, second largest cobra in Africa. It's very venomous. They're a shy though. They don't go after humans. They mostly eat toads, lizards, small mammals, birds and egg. They can be very defensive though. So, they're better avoided.

Another thing about them is they're fast. Unlike other snakes that will wait for their victims to come, these one pursue the victims.

PoliticsLaolu Akande Condemns Afe Babalola For "Harassing" Dele Farotimi by nlfpmod(mod): 9:49am On Dec 05, 2024
One would like to react to the recent harassment and arrest of Dele Farotimi. The recourse to criminal defamation by a legal luminary of Chief Afe Babalola's standing is not inspiring at all. The matter ought to have been pursued via civil means.

The Nigerian Court of Appeal in 1982 in the case of Nwankwo vs. State has opined that individuals ought not to use the instrument of state to fight their opponents. This is why Lagos & Edo states decriminalised defamation.

Besides, it is truly disturbing to discover that our dear Pa. Afe may be behind that harassment of Farotimi-something that we have all seen on video. The use of the Nigerian Police Force, mobilised from Ekiti to Lagos so as to escape from the fact that Lagos State has already decriminalised defamation is so inelegant

Pa Afe, SAN as he is fondly called, should consider the optics of what the world is witnessing unfold in this saga, in his name! The natural assumption, considering the speed and extent to which the police moved against Farotimi, is that there were some behind the scene manoeuvres to warrant that. This is not to deny Pa. Afe's right to seek redress. He is aggrieved, and we acknowledge his right to seek redress. This is without a doubt. It is his choice to exercise this right in the manner we have all seen that is unsettling! TROUBLING!!

TV/MoviesNetflix Denies Leaving Nigerian Market by nlfpmod(mod): 7:56pm On Dec 04, 2024
Despite reports from three publications suggesting Netflix is exiting the Nigerian market, the global streaming giant has firmly denied these claims, insisting it will continue to invest in Nigerian content.

The speculation was fueled by comments from Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who spoke at the 2024 Zuma International Film Festival. Afolayan claimed Netflix canceled several films it had previously commissioned from unnamed filmmakers.

“Three years ago, when we signed the three-film deal with Netflix, it was really exciting,” Afolayan said. The filmmaker went on to share that despite the stellar performance of those movies globally, Netflix seemed unimpressed by their returns in Nigeria.

“Thank God we had shot seasons two and three [of Anikulapo] because all the other people that were commissioned with us at the same time were canceled.”

However, Afolayan did not explicitly state that Netflix was exiting the Nigerian market, although his remarks will rightly drive speculation that the streaming platform is retreating from the country. This speculation is not entirely unfounded—Amazon Prime, another major streaming service, exited Nigeria in January 2024 one year after a huge marketing campaign and a slate of original Nigerian productions..

In a statement to TechCabal on Wednesday, a Netflix spokesperson reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria, saying, “We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our audience.”

The spokesperson did not immediately address Afolayan’s claims about canceled projects. Still, Wednesday’s conversation and social media reactions highlight growing uncertainty around Netflix’s long-term strategy in Nigeria, where rising inflation and currency devaluation have pressured consumer spending power.

Netflix has struggled to capture a large share of Nigeria’s competitive streaming market, which is dominated by the more affordable Showmax, a service operated by Multichoice. Netflix—currently priced at ₦7,000 ($4) per month—remains a luxury for many Nigerians, especially as inflation and naira devaluation erode purchasing power.

With local players continuing to outperform in pricing, Netflix’s ability to maintain its position in the region could become increasingly challenging.

Netflix’s relationship with Nigeria dates back to 2016 when it began licensing high-profile local films. Since 2016, it has poured over $23 million into Nigeria’s film industry, backing over 250 locally licensed titles, co-productions, and original commissions. Lionheart, The Wedding Party 2, and King of Boys are some of its most recognisable titles. In 2020, the streaming service signed multi-title deals with prominent Nigerian producers like Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Productions. In 2021, it expanded its partnership with Kunle Afolayan, signing a deal for three films, including an adaptation of Sefi Atta’s Swallow.

PoliticsWhat Dele Farotimi Wrote About Afe Babalola by nlfpmod(mod): 1:11pm On Dec 04, 2024
Foreword

This is not a biography for I have painstakingly provided glimpses of my early life in an earlier sequel to my first book.

My purpose here is to tell you the story of my sojourn within the Nigerian legal system and to show you how our justice system- the Nigerian justice system is in itself criminal, lending credence to how the criminality of the juthciary is completely reflective of the Nigetian state in its full ramifications and with full evidence of how this rot having become systemic is insidious and reaches to the very top of the juthcial system.

I will tell you the story of the complete and total loss of the capacity, to deliver justice against the backdrop of a case that was decided by the Supreme Court and which records are in the public domain.

I speak specifically of the case of Major Muritala Gbadamosi 8c Ors v. H.R.H Oba Tijani Akinloye & Ors otherwise known as the Gbadamosi-Eletu case.

It is my conternion regarding this case:

1 That Aare Afe Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgment in the service of his clients.

2. That the law firm of S. B. Joseph & Co. procured 2 warrant to execute the said judgment by doctoring the original judgment of the Supreme Court

3. That Atilade O, Justice at the time and the Administrative Judge of the Lagos Judicial Division, unlawfully issued a warrant of execution based on the doctored judgment and without the enrolled order of the Supreme Court.

4. That Atilade, J quashed the fraudulently obtained warrant following an application of counsel in protest against same.

5. That Aare Afe Babalola, Olu Daramola, Olu Faro and the law offices of Afe Babalola & Co, (Emmanuel Chambers) compromised the Supreme Court and the remaining semblance of integrity it might have had, when they went back to the Supreme Court and got that court to swim in the sewer of corruption and shameful self-abnegation.

6. That Lawal Pedro SAN, at the material time the Solicitor-General of Lagos State, corruptd himself, abandoned the interests of the State, its citizens and any pretense to decency and became the undiscloud attorney to the Eletu family thus betraying the public trust.

7. That Afe Babalola libelled me and the fact of the libel becarne known to me in his suit against Lawal Pedro SAN.

8. That I sued Afe Babalola SAN for libel and that he leveraged his influence in the justiciary to deny me justice.

9. That Oyekan-Abdullai, J was the instrument of injustice employed to deny me my day in court.

10. That the Nigerian Justice System is criminal and complicit and can therefore not uphold the tenets of true justice nor the dispense thereof to which it is sworn.

The story I intend to tell is wrapped around the above facts and have been carefully espoused to highlight only the facts of the matter. Afterall, of what use is a lawyer without his facts?

EducationSylvester Oromoni's Mother, Rosemary Is Dead by nlfpmod(mod): 8:03pm On Dec 03, 2024
Mother Of Late Sylvester Oromoni, Victim of Dowen College Bullying, Dies Seven Months After Court Dismissed Case

Rosemary Oromoni, the mother of Sylvester Oromoni, the 12-year-old boy who tragically died in 2021 after allegedly being bullied at Dowen College in Lagos, has reportedly passed away.

It was gathered that her death occurred in late November, following a battle with intermittent blood pressure-related health issues.

Meanwhile, Mrs Oromoni's death comes just over seven months after a special court in Lagos ruled against the family in April.

In April, SaharaReporters reported that a Lagos State Coroner Inquest court sitting in Ogba Magistrate Court ruled that the death of a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Sylvester Junior was caused by the negligence of his parent and doctor.

The Coroner Magistrate, Mikhail Kadiri, determined that Oromoni died as a result of failing treatment for his enlarged liver.

Oromoni had died on November 30, 2021. His death was linked to a bully and an alleged deadly chemical he was forced to consume at school.

He was alleged to have stated that he was beaten up by five Dowen College senior students: Favour Benjamin, 16, Edward Begue, 16, Ansel Temile, 14, Kenneth Inyang, and Micheal Kashamu, 16, son of late Senator Buruji Kashamu, before his death.

However, on January 5, 2022, the Lagos State Government exonerated five pupils and five employees of Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos, who had been accused of Sylvester Oromoni's death.

“Based on the foregoing it is clear that the deceased health deteriorated in (parents) PW 3’s care,” Kadiri was quoted.

He continued: “PW 3, did not take proper care of the deceased, PW 3, completely abandoned the deceased for a period of more than 32 hours.

“The deceased’s death was an avoidable one but for the negligence of the parents and PW 3, they didn’t take him to the hospital until the day he died on November 30, 2021.

“The deceased went through an avoidable and excruciating pain and made to suffer needlessly,” Kadiri said.

Foreign AffairsBelgium Gives Sex Workers Pensions, Maternity Leave by nlfpmod(mod): 8:11pm On Dec 02, 2024
Belgium made history on Sunday by becoming the first country in the world to allow sex workers to sign formal employment contracts, granting them access to benefits such as sick leave, maternity pay, and pensions.

The new law also ensures fundamental rights for sex workers, including the ability to refuse clients, set conditions for their work, and halt an act at any time.

Although the legislation was passed in May, it officially came into effect on Sunday.

“I am a very proud Belgium sex worker right now,” said Mel Meliciousss, a member of the Belgian union of sex workers, UTSOPI, in an Instagram post.

People who are already working in the industry will be much more protect[ed], and also people who are going to work in the industry also know what their rights are.”

Belgium had already refrained from criminalizing the act of offering or paying for sexual services, focusing instead on penalizing brothels and third parties involved in supporting sex work—such as landlords, bankers, and drivers—under accusations of “pimping.”

However, in 2022, lawmakers voted to decriminalize sex work and refine the definition of pimping, allowing sex workers greater access to essential services without legal obstacles.

The new law extends these efforts by providing sex workers with labour rights equivalent to those in other professions.

These include access to pensions, health insurance, unemployment benefits, family allowances, annual vacations, and maternity leave.

Employers must now obtain authorization, have no prior convictions for sexual assault, human trafficking, or fraud, and maintain clean and safe premises equipped with panic buttons. They are also prohibited from dismissing workers who refuse a client or specific act.

These changes reflect years of advocacy by Belgium’s sex worker union, UTSOPI, which highlighted the precarious conditions faced by workers before these protections.

Many were forced to continue working well into pregnancy or past retirement age due to a lack of benefits.

This law is a huge step forward, ending legal discrimination against sex workers by allowing a full-fledged contract,” the union stated in May.

The protections apply only to sex workers with formal employment contracts and do not extend to self-employed workers or those involved in pornography or striptease.

Belgium’s reforms stand out even among other countries where sex work has been decriminalized, such as New Zealand, the Netherlands, and parts of Australia, as they provide a new level of comprehensive labor protections.

In the United States, Nevada remains the only state where brothels are legal, while prostitution outside of these establishments remains prohibited.
