New Naira notes will neither reduce inflation, nor make the currency stronger.
Our 2 cents on the currency redesign process!
All cash is money but not all money is cash!!!
In 6 weeks you will have new Naira notes.
In 10 weeks you will need to be counted in a new census.
In 12 weeks you will be voting for a new president.
But right now you are facing a dollar crunch, buying a bag of rice for N51k and you cannot fly to Dubai on Emirates.
You are probably asking what is the next surprise
As if Nigerians had not had enough economic jolts, they were further startled by the proposed guidelines for redesigning the Naira. There will be new N200, N500 & N1000 notes from December 15 this year.
Most Nigerians who are already embattled are asking one question “what will these new notes do to soothe our frayed nerves??
The answer is that the new notes will do nothing to address the burning issues but will only increase the level of uncertainty in an economy which is slowly facing a crisis of confidence.
The notion that hoarding of currency notes outside the banking system is the primary cause of inflation is absolutely wrong.
This is because cash and currency in circulation (N3.2trn) constitutes less than 7% of the money supply (N48trn) e.g. the N5,000 you have in your wallet is less than 10% of the balance on your bank account.
Whilst M2 average growth rate in the last 5 years has been 12.5%, the increase in cash has been minuscule compared to money supply growth.
The new notes will not reduce inflation nor will they make the Naira stronger in the forex market. It is already trading at N875/$. In supermarkets and department stores, there is already a sign of shortage of some goods, this is happening 6 weeks to Christmas day.
Jumia changes board and CEOs step down as it renews focus on profitability
Jumia, the African eCommerce giant, has announced a few changes in its management with the appointment of a new management board and the departure of co-founders Jeremy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec as co-CEOs, according to a statement seen by TechCabal.
Hodara and Poignonnec have been at the helm of Jumia since it started in 2012, overseeing its expansion into 11 countries, getting the company listed on the New York stock exchange in 2019, and building out a logistics and payments arm.
Francis Dufay has been appointed as acting CEO by the supervisory board while the search for a permanent CEO continues. Dufay who’s been with Jumia since 2014 has held multiple senior leadership roles, including CEO of Jumia Ivory Coast and recently executive vice president of Africa overseeing the group’s e-commerce business across Africa. Before joining Jumia in 2014, Dufay worked at the global consulting firm Mckinsey, just like Hodara and Poignonnec.
The supervisory board has also promoted Antoine Maillet-Mezeray who was previously Jumia’s group CFO, to executive vice president of finance & operations. These two changes are only the first out of many other senior management changes that the company will be making over the next few months. The company will provide additional information on this announcement and business priorities on its Q3 earnings call scheduled for November 17, 2022.
The duo, Mailet-Mezeray and Dufay are tasked with “reducing operating losses and setting the business on a clear path to profitability, through stronger cost discipline, targeted monetization initiatives, and a more simplified and efficient organization,” according to the statement.
Jumia has been making losses since its inception, reporting $57.2 million in its 2022 second-quarter report.
“As we look ahead to the next chapter of Jumia’s journey, we want to bring more focus to the core e-commerce business as part of a more simplified and efficient organization with stronger fundamentals and a clearer path to profitability,” Jonathan Klein, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, said in the statement.
The company has long shared its ambition to become profitable but it’s not been clear how soon that will happen, even as the company steadily decreases its losses.
After its Q2 earnings reports, Poignonnec said in an interview that, “there is not a silver bullet that will suddenly make it profitable.”

i) Banks shall ensure that customers are promptly attended to and well treated to avoid delays and long queues/congestion at banking halls

Finally, banks are required to furnish the CBN with their daily vault cash position effective October 26, 2022 in line with the attached template.
The first set of returns up to November 1, 2022 is due before close of business on November 2, 2022. Thereafter, banks are to provide the daily returns on their cash position on or before 10.00am of the business day following the reporting date. The returns shall be submitted to BSDReturnscbn.gov.nq and BSD Group5Mailinqcbn.gov.ng.
The CBN shall monitor to ensure strict compliance with the above measures. Please be guided accordingly.
The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-NEC) has said that it will meet on Monday, November 7, to debate whether or not to resume its eight-month strike.
ASUU had temporarily suspended its strike on October 14 after extensive discussions with federal government representatives led by Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The move to consider resuming the strike came after the federal government paid lecturers half salaries for the month of October.
However, in a press statement issued on Saturday, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment said that “members of ASUU were paid pro-rata, not half pay as widely reported in the media”.
Across the country, universities have started to halt academic activities as a consequence of the payment of ratioed wages. On Friday, the University of Jos asked its lecturers to stay home.
Both the University of Abuja and Olabisi Onabanjo Univeristy have postponed their matriculation ceremonies until further notice.
Gombe State University has seized students’ results and stopped the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate projects, while Bayero University, Kano, has chosen to await the conclusion of tomorrow’s meeting.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has advised law enforcement officers against harassment and extortion of the public in the discharge of their duties.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, gave this advice during the Law Enforcement Training Institute 2022 passing out parade held at the Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre, in Magodo.
He said, “This administration is irrevocably committed to upholding the tenets of the rule of law and therefore will not condone any form of harassment, arbitrariness, extortion from any of its law enforcement officers.
“We will continue to strengthen the capacity of our law enforcement officers with the appropriate gadgets and equipment that will enhance their efficiency and effectiveness while also promoting accountability and transparency. The 8,316 law enforcement officers trained included Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Vehicle Inspection Service, Kick Against Indiscipline, and Neighborhood Safety Corp.”
The Chief Executive Officer of LETI, Mrs Abiola Adeyinka, noted that the officers were trained over a period of three months in emotional intelligence and gender-based violence.
“This training included team building, emotional intelligence, gender-based violence, emergency response training, and review of law enforcement agencies laws, among others, while the remaining one day was used in physical training on agility, obstacle crossing, parade/drills and so on,” she said.
The Federal Government only paid lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities for 18 working days in the month of October, The PUNCH has exclusively gathered.
Lecturers and senior members of ASUU, who spoke to our correspondent under strict confidence noted that the government only paid half salaries.
The PUNCH had reported how ASUU called off its eight-month-old strike on October 14, 2022. Lecturers were encouraged to resume back to work by the union on that same day.
Speaking with our correspondent, a senior member of the National Executive Council, said, “We were only paid for the days after the strike. I received a half salary. Other members are angry right now, they are blaming the NEC for calling off the strike.”
Another member, who confirmed the development, said, “Yes, it is true, I received half salary. It seems the government is set to kill unionism in the country but we are ready for them.”
Nollywood star actor, Yul Edochie, has revealed that "he has been called to become a minister of God" in a video he shared on his YouTube channel, Yul Edochie TV, on Monday.
“I have a calling to be a preacher of God, to be one of God’s minister (sic), to preach the word of God through words and actions".
“I’ve had this calling a long time ago – actually, many years ago. But, I’ve always felt maybe the time hadn’t come, the time wasn’t right. But now, it’s very strong. I feel the time has come.”
"God has blessed me in this life. By God’s grace, I’ve become one of the biggest, one of the most celebrated actors in the continent of Africa. God has taken me to a very high point in my career."
“I’m starting to realise God lifted me as an actor to where I am so that I can become one of his ministers".
Recall that Yul Edochie was recently involved in cheating and polygamy scandal.
In case you have no idea why Lagos transporters commenced a 7 days strike, let me give some clarity and make you really angry.
There are over 75,000 commercial buses (danfos) in Lagos, according to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) estimates.
According to the International center for Investigative Reporting ICIR; Each commercial vehicle driver pays at least N3,000 to agberos, also known as tickets to touts, every day.
This means that these drivers pay an average of N225 million each day, N6.75 billion each month, and N82.125 billion each year to agberos in Lagos.
That is not all o. There are at least 50,000 tricycles (Keke Marwas) in Lagos and each of them pay 1800 to these touts each day. This, therefore, means that each day, agberos walk off with N90 million from transport taxes collected from tricycle drivers. Every month, their pay reaches N2.7 billion, rising further to N32.85 billion every year.
The head of the Agberos and Oba of Oshodi designate, M. C. Oluomo, is a multi billionaire from the proceeds of this extortion.
He is also alleged to be the rigging linchpin of the ruling Party in Lagos. Aside the fact that these boycott will severely affect ordinary hardworking Lagosians. I really will love to see this last for even a month.
Meanwhile, the man who created and directly benefits from this broad-daylight robbery wants to be your president.
Currently, we have a world-class gold mine running in Osun State, the Eko Gold Coin which has been refined to full 24-karat purity, mining industries that supply the coal needs of Dangote & Bua cement factories and a steel plant in the process of producing liquid steel from its iron ore mine in Kaduna, and more, all from natural resources sourced within Nigeria.
It is my belief that this sector, when fully developed, will outstrip other sectors in export earnings and opportunities.

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission raided the offices of black market currency dealers in Abuja on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, arresting an unconfirmed number of suspects.
Our correspondent gathered that the officials, armed to the teeth, stormed the Sheraton Hotel area of Abuja to arrest some Bureaux De Change operators.
An eyewitness noted that the arrested suspects were dragged into waiting vehicles, as pedestrians trudged the scene.
During the week, the naira had depreciated further against the dollar at the parallel market as it exchanged for N880 per dollar as of Monday, October 31.
This follows the Central Bank of Nigeria’s announcement that the proposed newly-redesigned naira notes would be in circulation from December 15, 2022.
The Spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren could not confirm the operation when contacted by our correspondent.
“I will check and get back to you,” he said.
Meanwhile, the commission expresses concern about the rising spate of cyber-attacks on banks and the reluctance of the institutions to report such breaches to law enforcement.
While warning that such reticence would only embolden the criminals, the EFCC appeals to financial institutions to collaborate with it to secure the financial sector from threats of cyber-attacks.
The EFCC had in the wake of the recent announcement by the Central Bank Nigeria of plans to redesign and re-issue higher denominations of the naira, warned Bureau de Change operators to be wary of currency hoarders who would attempt to seize the opportunity to offload the currencies they had illegally stashed away.
The news of the death of singer, Davido’s first son, Ifeanyi, has left some of his fans in mourning.
Ifeanyi was said to have drowned in a swimming pool at the singer’s residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.
While some Twitter users have expressed their condolences, others hang on to hope that the news is false.
A tweep, Peace Agina, expressed her pain saying, “The demise of Davido and Chioma’s son is heartbreaking. No parent should lose their child. This is really sad. I pray God comforts them.”
Another tweep, Mr. Walter said, “The death of a child remains mysterious, unjust & questionable to his/her creator. My condolences to Davido, his fiancée, Chioma. May God grant them the fortitude to bear this loss. The global entertainment industry is traumatised by this sad occurrence.”
A tweep, Mr Sam, shared his faith that Ifeanyi is still alive and said, “Till Davido tweets about it, Ifeanyichukwu lives. I want all parents to join me & say! no matter how old I am, I shall never witness the death of my children. Amen.”
Oluwadamilola90, hoped to get positive response from Davido saying, “Waiting for positive news from #davido since last night. Good Lord show mercy.”
Entertainers condole with Davido, Chioma over son’s death
Nigerian entertainers have sent condolences to singer, Davido and his lover, Chioma Rowland, over the death of their three-year-old son, Ifeanyi.
Ifeanyi reportedly drowned at their home in Banana Island, Lagos State.
Following the sad news, entertainers have taken to their social media pages to mourn the child and pray for his parents.
Singer Paul Play Dairo said, “I’m really lost for words. This is really painful. Take heart, David.”
Actor Williams Uchemba wrote on Instagram, “I said I won’t believe anything on social media until I personally confirm myself. I prayed for it to be a lie. I am upset, pained and confused. Nobody deserves to feel this pain.
“Please say a prayer for David, Chioma and the entire family. Nobody deserves this kind of pain. Rest up little one.”
Muyiwa Ademola wrote, “It is one of the saddest thing when kids are being buried by parents. We really wish it never happened! May The Almighty gives the parents and the entire Adeleke family the strength to bear this loss.
“Please and please, if you have a pool in your house and you have little children, endeavor to secure free entry to the pool. Ensure no one except adults and supervised children gets in.”
Actress Iyabo Ojo, mourning, said, “I don’t even know how to react to this rude shock. I was hoping it wasn’t true. My God!!! This is so shocking, sad, devastating and extremely painful Olorun!!! Ikun le abiamo.”
Emotions have been high over the rumored death of Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of popular music artiste, Davido, and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland.
Details of the circumstances surrounding Ifeanyi’s death were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
However, unconfirmed reports hinted that Davido’s first son drowned in a swimming pool at his residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.
In a bid to revive him, the three-year-old victim, after being pulled out of the swimming pool, was reportedly rushed to a hospital in the Lekki area of the state, where he was confirmed dead by one of the doctors on duty.
The victim’s family had yet to react to the tragic development as of the time this report was filed.
However, since the news of Ifeanyi’s rumored death became public knowledge, Nigerians, particularly entertainment lovers, had been outraged and traumatised by the development.
A number of celebrities, have posted cryptic messages that appear to confirm the death of Ifeanyi. Some of which are comedians Ayo Makun and Lasisi Elenu, radio personality Daddy Freeze among others.
Makun, in an Instagram post early Tuesday, wrote, “The death of a child is unnatural, unfair, and tragic, this hit me so bad.”
Daddy Freeze, who went live on Instagram in the early hours of Tuesday morning said, “When the person you love is someone involved it becomes a heavy emotional burden. I am not confirming anything but bear with me I will not be live tonight.”
Lasisi Elenu also posted, “Father heal your children’s heart from this pain, strengthen them in such a dark and hurtful time oh Lord.”
Reality TV star and actress, Rosemary Afuwape, said on her Instagram story, “My heart can’t take this. This is so painfully unbearable. Chioma and Davido please accept my condolences. No amount of words can comfort your hearts. I am truly sorry for your loss.”
As of 1.28am, news of Ifeanyi’s rumored death was the most trending topic on Twitter.
The rumored death, however, emanated from a now deleted post from actress, Eniola Badmus, late Monday.
Nigerians, while reacting to Badmus’ post, criticised her for leaking such sensitive information to the public.
Sixteen pupils of Ibafo Community High School, Ibafo, Ogun State, are in police custody after a fight between teachers of the school and the pupils on Thursday, October 20, 2022, which led to the destruction of the school property.
Parents and siblings of the 16 students and other parents took to the streets on Friday, October 28, 2022 over the detention, lamenting that their children were underage and unlawfully kept in the police custody. The protesting mothers also visited The PUNCH.
Speaking to one of the parents, Mrs Suliyat Kolapo, she stated that her 16-year-old daughter was arrested over the theft of a waste basket in the school after the fight. She stated, “When they came to arrest her on Saturday, they claimed that she was in possession of a waste basket and in all honesty, she never brought home anything of the sort. It’s her seventh day in custody. They took her away in handcuffs. The government should please come to our aid.”
She noted that her daughter started menstruating at the police cell, adding that she was called by the police to bring her underwear and menstrual pads.
Another parent, Mrs Kemi Lateef, told Sunday PUNCH that her 16-year-old daughter, Aliyat Lateef, was among those detained.
She noted, “On Friday, my daughter ran home saying that they were being pursued by the police over a fight that broke out in the school, and that her best friend was arrested. In the early hours of Saturday, October 22, the police visited our home and took away my daughter in handcuffs over theft and destruction of school’s property.
“Truthfully, she informed me on Friday that she took one of the books which was thrown out by the pupils fighting in the school to read and claimed that she kept it on the floor after reading the story book.”
A businesswoman and mother to one of the pupils, Mrs Salmat Adediran, stated that her son was arrested on Friday after the fight. She stated, “When I got to the school, the teachers assured me that Bolu (her son) was not part of the fight and was recklessly picked up by the police when they were raiding pupils involved in the fight.”
The parents noted that efforts to secure the release of their kids were futile, Adediran stated, “We have met with the school authorities, visited elders in the area to intervene in order to have them released but all proved abortive. However, we were summoned to a Parent-Teacher Association meeting on Friday, October 28, 2022 where it was concluded that the damage to the school property was to the tune of N2m. It was agreed by the parents of the affected and parents of pupils who were not affected that every pupil will pay N700 each.’’
She explained that after the meeting, they were assured that their kids would be released from custody, adding that the situation didn’t change.
She said, “After the meeting, we got to Ibafo Police Station and the DPO informed us that they were not releasing our kids and the principal should be contacted. However, the principal was contacted and we were directed again to the DPO. It now appears as if we are being played. Also, we were assured that the principal would meet us later at the police station but all was a facade. After eight days, our underage kids are still in police custody.”
However, our correspondent who visited the school on Saturday observed that some of the school property were damaged. Some of the damaged items were being replaced and the school undergoing renovation.
Reacting to the development, the principal of the school who gave his name only as Mr Sunmonu, denied that the pupils were in detention. He asked our correspondent to contact the Ibafo Police Station for confirmation.
He said, “You don’t need to ask me if the pupils are there; go to the Ibafo Police Station to find out if the pupils are there or not. You don’t need to ask me that kind of question. The best thing for you is to reach out to the DPO of the police station and ask him what happened.”
On a second call, the principal admitted that a contribution of N2m to replace the damaged items was agreed upon at a PTA meeting.
He said, “I can’t give any answer because you are not a stakeholder. The stakeholders were there on Friday when we had a meeting and everything was decided there.”
Stakeholders’ reactions
Reacting to the issue, a human rights lawyer, Ugwumadu Malachy, noted that the police action was condemnable.
He said, “If there’s an allegation of destruction of public property; that amounts to a malicious destruction of public property which is a bailable offence. If from last week Friday till now, they have apprehended schoolchildren and kept in detention without a charge referred against them, that detention have become illegal and violates the rights of the children by reason of the days they have been kept in custody without a charge on the order of the court to remand them.”
“The rights to liberty of every Nigerian are guaranteed under Section 34 & 35 of the Nigerian constitution. You cannot under the guise that you’re investigating an offence allegedly committed by any citizen and keep them beyond 48 hours. At most, we find it completely unacceptable without the orders of the court.’’
He noted that the parents of the schoolchildren should file a legal complaint against the actions of the school and the police.
He added, “The constitution stated that citizens of this country cannot have their rights trampled upon without a redress. The parents can provide legal representation to their kids and then approach the police station for the unconditional release of their kids. If they have a case against them, they should charge them to court and in the absence of that, they should be released. The parents should provide legal representation for the enforcement of their fundamental human rights to liberty and to movement. However, if the police are convinced that they have committed wanton destruction, they should charge them to court, and either way, they should refer to the law and refrain from taking laws into their own hands.”
Malachy also said that civil societies could fight the detention of the schoolchildren on behalf of their parents because it was illegal.
Another lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, noted that the prolong detention of the schoolchildren was illegal and unconstitutional.
He said, “If the pupils have committed any offence, there is a process under the law in resolving that, particularly because they are pupils. They are not meant to be detained beyond 24 hours. If the police are saying they have committed an offence, they should be taken to court.”
Effiong noted that under the Child Rights Law and the Children and Young Persons Act, children were given special treatment under the law.
He noted, “I don’t understand the basis of the police keeping them but whatever the excuse was, it is condemnable. While the destruction of the school property should not be condoned, the pupils involved should be sanctioned by the school after a thorough investigation and fair hearing.
“It is wrong for the police to detain them and they should be released immediately. I expected that the police will invite their parents to take them on administrative bail. There is no justification for keeping children in custody for 10 days, nothing justifies that. The school authorities should see to the immediate release of the schoolchildren.”
Effiong noted that if there was a legal process the school wanted to pursue, the matter should be taken to court.
Police react
Reacting to the development, the Divisional Police Officer, Ibafo Police Station, Alabi Olusoji stated that he would not give any information on the phone over the matter.
He stated, “Some of these parents are not serious and they don’t know what they are saying. Come to my office on Monday and I’ll provide you with adequate information. However, if you insisted that it was urgent, call the state PPRO for confirmation.
"I don’t even know you, you have never called me before and you are calling me about pupils who destroyed school property, destroyed principal’s office, stole money as well. If you want anything, come to my office on Monday. You cannot be asking me this type of information over the phone.”
Contacted, state police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, noted that he was not aware of the detention of the pupils. He promised to find out and get back to our correspondent.

Elon Musk has completed his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, a source familiar with the deal told CNN Thursday, putting the world’s richest man in charge of one of the world’s most influential social media platforms.
Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal and two other executives, according to two people familiar with the decision. Twitter declined to comment.
The deal’s closing removes a cloud of uncertainty that has hung over Twitter’s business, employees and shareholders for much of the year. After initially agreeing to buy the company in April, Musk spent months attempting to get out of the deal, first citing concerns about the number of bots on the platform and later allegations raised by a company whistleblower.
Musk appeared to acknowledge the takeover in a tweet Thursday night saying, “the bird is freed.”
By completing the deal, Musk and Twitter have avoided a trial that was originally set to take place earlier this month. But Musk’s takeover, and the immediate firings of some of its top executives, now raises a host of new questions for the future of the social media platform, and the many corners of society impacted by it.
In addition to Agrawal, Musk on Thursday fired CFO Ned Segal and policy head Vijaya Gadde, according to the two sources. Musk also fired Sean Edgett, Twitter’s general counsel, according to a source.
Musk has said he plans to rethink Twitter’s content moderation policies in service of a more maximalist approach to “free speech.” The billionaire has also said he disagrees with Twitter’s practice of permanent bans for those who repeatedly violate its rules, raising the possibility that a number of previously banned, controversial users could reemerge on the platform.
Perhaps most immediately, many will be watching to see how soon Musk could let former President Donald Trump back on the platform, as he has previously said he would do. Depending on the timing, such a move could have major implications for the upcoming US midterm elections, as well as the 2024 Presidential campaign.
In taking those steps, Musk could singlehandedly upend the media and political ecosystem, reshape public discourse online and disrupt the nascent sphere of conservative-leaning social media properties that emerged largely in response to grievances about bans and restrictions on Twitter and other mainstream services.
Earlier this week, Musk visited Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters to meet with employees. He also posted an open letter to Twitter advertisers, saying he doesn’t want the platform to become a “free-for-all-hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences.”
The acquisition also promises to extend Musk’s influence. The billionaire already owns, oversees or has significant stakes in companies developing cars, rockets, robots and satellite internet, as well as more experimental ventures such as brain implants. Now he controls a social media platform that shapes how hundreds of millions of people communicate and get their news.
A deal that went off the rails
Even for Twitter, a company known for a certain amount of chaos over its history, the months-long deal process with Musk was turbulent.
Musk, a prominent and controversial Twitter user, became involved with the company earlier this year when he built up a more than 9% stake in its shares. After announcing he had become Twitter’s largest shareholder, Musk accepted and then pulled out of an offer to sit on the company’s board.
Musk then offered to buy Twitter outright at a significant premium, threatened a hostile takeover and signed a “seller-friendly” deal to buy the company that involved waiving due diligence.
“This is not a way to make money,” Musk said in an on-stage interview shortly after making an offer to buy Twitter. “My strong intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization.”
Musk also pledged to “defeat the spam bots or die trying,” referring to the fake and scam accounts that are often especially active in the replies to his tweets and those of others with large followings on the platform.
Within weeks of the acquisition agreement, however, Musk began raising concerns about the prevalence of those same fake and spam accounts on Twitter and ultimately attempted to terminate the deal.
Twitter sued him to follow through with the agreement, alleging that Musk was using the bot argument as a pretense to get out of a deal for which he had developed buyer’s remorse. In the weeks after the deal was announced, much of the stock market, including social media companies, declined amid concerns about rising inflation and a looming recession. The downturn also hit Tesla and, in turn, Musk’s personal net worth.
Legal experts widely believed that Twitter was on strong footing to have the deal enforced in court. Two weeks before the contentious legal battle was set to go to trial, Musk said he would follow through with the deal on its original terms after all. As the parties negotiated, Musk’s attorneys asked a judge to stay the legal proceedings, prompting pushback from Twitter, which feared that Musk might not stay true to his promise to close the deal.
In a sharp response, Twitter’s lawyers wrote that Musk had been attempting to exit the deal and “now, on the eve of trial, Defendants declare they intend to close after all. ‘Trust us,’ they say, ‘we mean it this time.’”
Delaware Chancery Court chancellor Kathaleen St. Judge McCormick gave the parties until 5 p.m. on Oct. 28 to close the deal or face a rescheduled trial.
What’s next for Twitter With the deal drama out of the way, attention now turns to Musk’s plans for Twitter.
Beyond the removal of Twitter’s CEO and other executives, Musk’s takeover could also usher in the return of some measure of influence over the company by founder Jack Dorsey, who stepped down as CEO in November and left its board in May. While Dorsey has said he will not formally return to Twitter, he has privately discussed the takeover with Musk and offered advice.
Musk has also reportedly told prospective investors in the deal that he planned to get rid of nearly 75% of the company’s staff, in a move that could disrupt every aspect of how Twitter operates. He previously discussed dramatically reducing Twitter’s workforce in personal text messages with friends about the deal, which were revealed in court filings, and didn’t dismiss the potential for layoffs in a call with Twitter employees in June.
Under Musk, Twitter may not have use for many of its existing staff. Musk has repeatedly made clear he would overhaul Twitter’s content moderation policies and bolster what he calls “free speech,” potentially undoing years of efforts from the company to address misinformation and harassment and to create “healthier” conversations on the platform.
Such a move could also have ripple effects across the social media landscape. Twitter, although smaller than many of its social media rivals, has sometimes acted as a model for how the industry handles problematic content, including when it was the first to ban then-President Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot.
And in recent years, several alternative social networks have launched largely targeting conservatives who claim more mainstream services unduly restrict their speech. These services include Trump’s Truth Social and Parler, which Kanye West recently said he would acquire. While it’s unclear how far Musk could go in fulfilling his free speech dreams, any loosening of existing content moderation policies could effectively make Twitter, which provides a much larger audience, a more enticing service for some of the users who have fled to those smaller, fringe services. (Musk, however, could run into regulatory issues, especially in Europe, depending on how far he takes his efforts to loosen content restrictions.
Apart from content moderation, Musk has also tossed out a wide range of other possible changes for the platform, from enabling end-to-end encryption for Twitter’s direct messaging feature to suggesting recently that Twitter become part of an “everything” app called X, possibly in the style of popular Chinese app WeChat.
Despite his months-long attempt to get out of buying the company and his own recent remarks that he is “obviously overpaying” for it, Musk has tried to sound optimistic about Twitter’s potential.
“The long-term potential for Twitter, in my view, is an order of magnitude greater than its current value,” he said on Tesla’s earnings conference call last week.

Yesterday, an elderly man came to my office and complained bitterly of how a police officer extorted him of N50,000 before he could take his son on bail. After I summoned the police officer to my office, the elderly man narrated the same story in his presence.
The officer vehemently denied ‘collecting N50,000 from this man.’ He did not deny collecting money; the exact figure is the issue now.
Then the elderly man said, ‘Actually, it was N20,000 and not N50,000.’ This still does not excuse the corrupt practice. Even one Naira is bad enough.
The officer was first made to refund the elderly man, after which his disciplinary journey began.
Papa then came to me and apologized saying, ‘I said N50,000 because I was angry.’ ♂️

THERE is a spike in cases of snakebite across Nigeria as humans and reptiles clash in dry land due to displacement caused by the floods across the country, a survey by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has revealed.
NAN correspondents who visited areas prone to snakebites and treatment centres found a sharp rise in the cases with more deaths recorded as the floods blocked access to treatment centres.
Managing Director of Echitap Group, producers of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) Nandul Durfa who spoke to NAN regretted that many lives were being lost to the menace.
The former Chief Medical Director of University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, also decried the shortage of ASV in the treatment centres.
“It is a scary situation. Snakes and humans are all running away from the floods and would usually clash in the dry lands in the struggle for space”, Durfa said.
Meanwhile, statistics from the Snakebite Research Hospital, Kaltungo, in Gombe State indicate that 1,900 victims of snake bites had been admitted since January.
According to the the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Suleiman Mohammed, 34 of the victims died.
He said that most of the victims were herders and farmers that were mostly in the bush and usually at risk.
“When the rains get to the peak, we tend to have more patients because most of the snakes are dislodged from their holes and hiding places by the waters.
“So, when there is flood, it is linked to incidents of snakebites because the flood tends to move the snakes away from their usual habitat and they often go to areas where humans live.”
He said that six deaths had been recorded in October with the rest spread across January to September.
A research officer with the hospital, Abubakar Saidu Balla, confirmed that there was a spike in snakebite cases due to floods.
“Because of the devastating floods, farmlands are wet and the snakes go to higher grounds where they mix with people.
“The situation is worse in riverine areas around Borno, Adamawa, Kogi, Gombe and Bauchi.
“The floods force snakes to migrate or carry them along and deposit them at the forests, homes or over river banks.
“The situation is worsened by the fact that victims cannot go to medical centres to get attention because the roads and bridges are either washed away or flooded.
“In the rural areas, the motorcycles usually help, but they cannot ride through the water now. Very often, victims reach treatment centres dead.”
Balla said that it had become dangerous to go to the farms, especially in Gombe.
Reports from Lokoja in Kogi also indicated that snake attacks had become common with people living in fear.
“We live in fear of snakes, but we thank God that we have not recorded an incident of snakebite,” Usman Agbaje, a resident, told NAN.
He added that travellers plying the Ganaja-Lokoja flooded road had often encountered big snakes while in the boats.
