Politics › Nigeria Cannot Borrow Anymore-Adeosun by Nne5(op): 7:51pm On Jul 11, 2017
The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the Muhammadu Buhari administration is committed to reviving the Nigerian economy within the next 18 months.

Osinbajo, at the quarterly presidential business forum in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the administration was determined to deliver on its promises to the electorate.

Also speaking at the same event, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, said Nigeria should continue to diversify its economy to enable it to generate more revenue to fund its budget, adding that the country cannot borrow any more.

In her remarks, Minister of Finance Mrs Kemi Adeosun said Nigeria should continue to diversify its economy to enable it to generate more revenue to fund its budget.

She said, “The problem is that we have been relying on oil and oil gave us a big budget size.

“It’s just one of our resources and as you know it’s only 10 per cent of our GDP. So the rest of our economy – 90 per cent – really has to contribute to our revenue.

“So what are we trying to do? We need to mobilize additional revenue to fund our budget.

“We have got to get our budget bigger and to do that we cannot borrow anymore. We simply have to generate more revenue, we have to plug the leakages, we have to improve tax collection so that we can manage our borrowing.

“So the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) is aimed at improving revenue collection rate and generally improving domestic revenue mobilization so that we can fund our budget sustainably.’’

The minister described as encouraging the response of Nigerians to the inauguration of VAIDS.

She expressed the hope that the Buhari administration would reposition Nigeria to the level that “we will not be so vulnerable as we have been in the past to oil price movements’’.

The acting president, who said that Nigeria was fortunate to have a leader in President Buhari, added that the administration would continue to ensure that public funds were spent efficiently.

“And I have said this repeatedly, that in some sense we are fortunate to have a leader like the president who at least we know, a straightforward and honest, and committed to ensuring government expenditure is spent the way it should be spent, and that people don’t do what they like.

“To that extent, I think we have the right environment at least in terms of government discipline and all of that, to be able to deliver on the promises that we have made.

“But, do not doubt for one moment at all, our commitment to ‎ensuring that we are able to deliver on the promises that we have made.

“Day after day, night after night we are working on these things. Practically every night we work on these issues. I believe very strongly that Nigeria will turn around.

“I have no doubt in my mind that if we are focused even in the next 12 to 18 months, if we are focused we will certainly see a turn around.’’

He, therefore, advised the private sector to partner with the government to achieve the set target.

The Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Mr Babatunda Fashola, who also spoke at the event, stated that the government’s focus has been on how to ease doing business, enable the private sector to be the best it could be to compete and be efficient locally and globally.

He said: “The private sector has always been in any economy with a capital disposition, the driver of growth, the driver of development and ultimately government must interface with the private sector.

“We want to hear from them where the shoes pinch most, where we can make it easier; where we can make it better and how we can do so.

“And it is only by understanding the problems that we can then offer quality solutions which will include executive actions, sometimes legislative actions, sometimes judicial interventions as a mixture of government’s policy options to help private sector do its best.’’

Leke Baiyewu, Abuja

The Senate on Tuesday passed the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Bill, which seeks to compel hospitals to treat persons with gunshot wounds before obtaining police report.

The bill, which was sent to the Senate by the House of Representatives for concurrence, seeks to establish a law that ensures that victims of gunshot wounds receive necessary treatment from medical workers and assistance from security agencies.

The bill also seeks to ensure that every person, including security agents, assist any person with gunshot wounds and ensure that the person is taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Additionally, the legislation mandates that no person with gunshot wounds shall be refused immediate and adequate treatment by any hospital in Nigeria, whether or not initial monetary deposit is paid.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, noted that not every person shot was a criminal.

He said it was important that a legal framework be put into place to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

Saraki said, “By the passage of this bill, the Senate has moved to ensure that every hospital in Nigeria, both public and private, must accept to treat victims of gunshot wounds without any clearance from the police.

“What we have done is to ensure that everyone is entitled to medical treatment, irrespective of the cause of the shooting. We should reserve judgment for the criminal justice system, and leave healthcare for the medical professionals.”

Other bills for concurrence passed by the Senate on Tuesday, which will be forwarded to the President for assent include the Animal Health and Husbandry Technologies (Registration, etc) Bill, 2017; Corporate Manslaughter Bill, 2017; National Child Protection and Enforcement Agency Bill, 2017; National Intelligence Agency Pension Board Bill, 2017; Nigerian Academy of Science Bill, 2017; and the National Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science Bill.

Christianity Etc › Agents Of Satan Accusing Me Of Diverting N40m IDP Money–CAN President, Ayokunle by Nne5(op): 11:10am On Jul 10, 2017
By Wale Odunsi on July 10, 2017@dailypostngr

National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Samson Ayokunle, has described allegations of financial impropriety against his leadership as a blatant lie concocted by agents of Satan, who are opposed to ongoing overhaul of CAN.

It could be recalled that DAILY POST reported that the National President, Patriotic Christian Youth of Nigeria, PSYN, an affiliate body of CAN, Evangelist Simon Timothy Nasso, had in Lafia, Nasarawa State, accused the CAN president of diverting over N40 million meant to take care of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), to buy official cars.

Reacting to the allegation, Ayokunle said the allegation was a blatant lie.

He said: “You should know that somebody of my spiritual status cannot misappropriate money because I came to CAN from a denomination with bigger administrative set up and with more funds to manage for different mission works.

“Let them know that I am not a novice in administration and my integrity is the hallmark of my ministry.

“Few remnants of political jobbers who feel that they are loosing out in CAN and are opposed to a total overhaul of things in CAN that are behind such allegation.

‘’They belong to the camp of evil men like Korah and Abiram that opposed Moses and accused him wrongly.

“Ask them to give him documentary evidence for their claim. Besides, he should tell them to wait for the external auditor’s report before their campaign of calumny. Tell him that the people are agents of Satan who do not worry about rubbishing the image of Christ, which CAN and its leadership stand for.

“One of them eyes the position I divinely occupy thinking that it is by destroying my name that they can be popular. They did that with my predecessor and they have started with me again. By the grace of God, unless they repent, God will recompense tribulation to all those people who are part of the mixed multitude in the body of Christ doing this type of dirty job.

“This is what the Book of II Thessalonians 1:6 says. They are enemies of the church. Why can’t they present their allegation to CAN leadership if they are sure of it? Why should they go to the press?”

Politics › Police Detain 3 For Staging Mock Funeral For President by Nne5(op): 4:55pm On Jul 07, 2017
The police on Friday detained three men in Uganda for staging a mock funeral for President Yoweri Museveni in protest at a plan to remove the presidential age limit of 75 years.

Spokesperson, Samson Kasasira said, the police arrested the men, including two university students, parading a coffin in the south-western city of Mbarara.

Kasasira said the coffin was topped by a portrait of the president and carried the inscription: “Rest in peace Museveni.”

“The men had gone ahead with the protest in spite of having been denied permission to stage it,’’ Kasasira said, adding that they would be charged with sedition.

The arrests followed reports that a faction of ruling party legislators want to change the constitution to remove the presidential age limit of 75 years, which would leave Museveni, 72, ineligible to run for the presidency in the next elections in 2021.

The ruling National Resistance Movement has almost 70 percent of the seats in parliament.

Critics say Museveni, who has ruled the East African country since 1986, has become increasingly repressive of the freedom of speech.

Crime › Pastor Remanded In Prison For Fraud by Nne5(op): 3:56pm On Jul 04, 2017
Peter Dada Akure

An Ondo Chief Magistrates’ court sitting in Ondo town, Ondo State, has remanded one Emmanuel Akinmoladun in prison custody for allegedly being involved in fraudulent practices.

Akinmoladun, who is said to be a founder of a church in the community was charged to court for allegedly defrauding one Mr. Babatunde Adepeko of the sum of N2,620,000.00 in2013.

The accused person was arraigned in court on a three-count of fraud, illegal conversion and false declaration.

The prosecutor, Inspector Olagbayi Bernard, who read the charge sheet to the accused person said Akinmoladun purposely defrauded the complainant under guise of selling two plots of land to him. He added that the accused person allegedly collected N2,620,000.00 from the complainant disappeared thereafter.

The prosecutor added that the Akinmoladun sometime in 2016 at the Ondo State High Court in the Ondo judicial division swore an oath of affidavit of agreement claiming to be the owner of the two plots of land he sold to the complainant. The prosecutor said the oath of affidavit was false.

Bernard stated that the offence was contrary to and punishable under section 419, 383, and 106 of the criminal code, cap 137 volume1 laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The accused person however pleaded not guilty to all the charges when they were read to him.

The prosecutor prayed the court to grant him short adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble all his witnesses to prosecute the case.

In his ruling, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr Gbenga Awodeyi, adjourned the case to July 26, 2017 for further hearing and ordered the accused person to be remanded in prison custody.

ON JULY 4, 20173:01 PM

Body of Late elder statesman and Nigeria’s former permanent representative to the United Nations, Alhaji (Dr) Yusuf Maitama Sule has arrived Abuja from Cairo, Egypt.

Reports indicate that the body arrived the Nigeria at around 1:54 p.m and would be conveyed to Kano aboard a presidential jet.

The reports also said that the duo of the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari who led a presidential delegation to the funeral, alongside the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki received the corpse through the Egypt Air tarmac from the presidential win

Recall that the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had earlier today named Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, as the head of the Federal Government delegation to the funeral of Alhaji Maitama Sule.

Mr. Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity (Office of the Vice-President) had made this known on his twitter handle on Tuesday in Abuja.

Other members of the delegation, according to Akande, include the Minister of Interior, retired Abdulrahaman Danbazau; Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi and the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu.

The presidential aide revealed that the Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Idris and some government functionaries were part of the delegation.

The delegation is to submit President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter of condolence to Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.

The President’s letter reads thus: “I have heard this morning, the death of the venerable Alhaji Maitama Sule, Dan Masanin Kano, and one of Nigeria’s famous sons. Although, I knew he was in poor health for some time, his death nonetheless, came as a profound shock.

“As a Minister in the First Republic, he was one of those who assisted our Founding Fathers, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello and Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, to fashion Nigeria politically and lay the grounds of national co-existence.

“Maitama Sule was blessed by God with a wonderful voice and outstanding eloquence. He served with distinction in the First Republic, the Second Military regime, as well as the Second Republic, without him being tainted with the remotest hint of scandal.

“As a person, I found him personable with unceasing good humour. Nothing personified his faith more than the fact that on losing his sight, he did not retreat in himself sulking on account of his ill-fortune.

“Quite to the contrary, he honoured virtually all invitations extended to him and spoke as usual with singular eloquence and unparalleled wit.

“In my discussions with him, I greatly valued his counsel, and I never ceased to be amazed by his concern for the well-being of his country rather than his personal interests.

“Let me extend my sincere condolences to Your Excellency, family and friends, the Government and people of Kano, and Nigerians as a whole, for this most heavy loss. We shall not soon see the like of him.

“May God forgive his sins and admit him to Paradise, Amin.’’

The deceased statesman, aged 87, who died in the early hours of Monday in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, will be buried in Kano today at 4:00 pm.

Kano state government declared Tuesday as work-free day in honour of the late statesman.
