Politics › BIAFRA: Uwazurike Tackles Nnamdi Kanu by Nne5(op): 6:26am On Jul 15, 2017 |
By Vincent Ujumadu
Chief Ralph Uwazurike, the founder of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB is unhappy and that may not be unconnected with the fact that he, of recent, is being relegated to the background on the issue of Biafra agitation. The man of the moment, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who Uwazurike said he employed and handed over the Radio Biafra he set up as part of the agitation process, has been getting all the attention of late.
Uwazurike is also worried that many people, including the media, had not appreciated his sacrifices towards the actualization of Biafra. But he insists that only his style of approach can lead to the actualization of Biafra, describing as an act of wickedness, the insinuation that he was a sell-out on the issue of the struggle.
Since the launching in Aba, Abia State in 1999, MASSOB under Uwazurike continually alleged mass arrests and killings of its members by government forces. He had also consistently embarked on programmes aimed at actualizing Biafra and was indeed the arrow head of the agitation. For the first 10 years of the formation of MASSOB by Uwazurike, the body and its members/supporters were very active but non-violent.
For instance, in May 2008, MASSOB released a list of 2,020 members alleged to have been killed by security agents since 1999. Uwazuruike was arrested on several occasions and charged with treason. In 2011, he and 280 MASSOB members were arrested in Enugu while attending a function in honour of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. Few days later, however, former President Goodluck Jonathan ordered Uwazuruike’s release, as well as all other MASSOB members in detention.
MASSOB thereafter launched the Biafran passport in 2009 as part of the program to celebrate its 10th anniversary and Uwazuruike, said the introduction of the Biafran passport was in response to persistent demands from Biafrans in Diaspora
In 2005, MASSOB re-introduced the old Biafran currency into circulation. This sparked a lot of excitement at the time especially as one Biafran pound was said to exchange for two hundred and seventy naira at the border communities of Togo and the Republic of Benin.
In February 2013, MASSOB claimed that several corpses found floating in the Ezu River on the boundary of Enugu and Anambra States were those of its members previously arrested by the police. The group claimed that the police routinely executed MASSOB members without proper trial.
On September 13, 2015 police in Anambra state arrested about 25 MASSOB members who were marking their 16th anniversary and one of them was shot. At St Charles Lwanga Catholic Church Okpoko,18 members were arrested and one shot and at Iba Pope Catholic Church, while at Awada, 11 members of MASSOB were arrested. At Awka, two MASSOB members were arrested by the police.
On May 31, 2013, Uwazurike’s MASSOB was branded as one of three extremist groups threatening the security of Nigeria. In fact former President Goodluck Jonathan declared that the Nigerian state faced three fundamental security challenges posed by extremist groups which he listed as Boko Haram in the North; the MASSOB in the South-East; and the Oodua People’s Congress OPC, in the South-West..
But following his disagreement with a section of MASSOB members, the bubble burst and the man, who was almost invincible in the Biafra agitation, started receiving knocks from people who hitherto, were adoring him. One of the allegations was that he abandoned some MASSOB members who were incarcerated in various Nigerian prisons. He however defended himself, saying such a thing never happened.
He told Saturday Vanguard: “The impression being created was that someone paid me to stop the struggle. This is unfair. Or do people expect me to start fighting Nnamdi Kanu? Or do people think you are fighting for Biafra when you kneel down in public places to make show? How can anybody hold the view that I am a sell-out?
“I set up Radio Biafra in 1999 and handed it over to Nnamdi Kanu for the good of the struggle, but what did I get in return? Someone I employed used the radio station I set up to blackmail me. Where did I go wrong? And if you were to be Uwazurike, what will you do under such a situation? If I didn’t set up MASSOB, how could Nnamdi Kanu have had a platform to start what he is doing?”
Stressing that his approach to the struggle is what would ultimately lead to the actualization of Biafra, Uwazurike added: “On May 22nd, we organized a ceremony in which over one million people participated in Onitsha and other cities and this was reported by the media. It was the same in Aba, Enugu, Owerri and other cities, yet people are saying that I am backsliding or that I am a sell-out.
“Do you also know that I built 20 houses at Okwe, Imo State, for the wounded Biafra soldiers who were begging for alms at Oji River and I pay them salary every month? Today, there are no more Biafra soldiers begging for alms at that spot.
“Only last month, I risked my life to travel to the North for the sake of Biafra and I was at Arewa House in Kaduna where I met people, yet the media and Igbo people do not appreciate my sacrifices. How would you feel if you were to be in my position?”
Uwazurike, who led a delegation of Igbo leaders from the South East, told some youth groups at the Arewa House in Kaduna that MASSOB had pursued the path of peace since its creation in 1999 and would continue to do so.
He continued: “Self-determination without violence is a fundamental right, we must strive against sowing the seed of discord but do all that will promote peace and justice in Nigeria. There is a gap in communication from our leaders which needs to be bridged, hence we are meeting with notable leaders in the north to persuade them that there is no cause for alarm,
“We have overgrown the era of marching the streets with Biafran flags. MASSOB is now consolidating on building structures and diplomatic negotiations with other countries, recalling that there was a re-declaration of Biafra on May 22nd, 2000, submission of Biafra Bill of rights to United Nations and his attendance of OAU Summit in Lome, Togo in 2000, among other achievements..
“MASSOB existed for 18 years without violence and in 2009, I went to London and opened Radio Biafra and handed it over to Nnamdi Kanu as the director. Soon afterwards, politicians hijacked him, and he started working for them.
“The radio that was meant to educate our people and advise our people was turned into a source of hate messages, blackmail, intimidation and others. The resultant effect was that the northern youths came up to challenge us, to say that they are not happy with the hate messages and the insults they receive from the same radio.
“The main purpose of floating the organization called MASSOB was not to cause crisis in Nigeria. I assured the late Odumegu Ojukwu when he was alive that there would be no other civil war in Nigeria. Because he, Ojukwu, was so concerned and wanted some measure of assurance from me that MASSOB would not cause problems in Nigeria, I gave him that assurance.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/07/biafra-uwazurike-tackles-kanu/

Politics › Fayose Distributed Money To Us After 2014 Court Attack – Witness Tells Court by Nne5(op): 5:19pm On Jul 14, 2017 |
A witness, Akin Apanisile, on Friday revealed hw Governor Ayo Fayose distributed money to his loyalists on September 25, 2014 after the State High Complex was attacked in a bid to prevent the hearing of his election eligibility case. He made the revelation while being led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Mr. Ahmed Tafa, before the presiding judge, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye. Apanisile testified as Prosecution Witness 5 (PW 5) in the murder case instituted by the state government against seven persons accused of complicity in the murder of former state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Omolafe Aderiye. The defendants in the case are Adebayo Aderiye a.k.a. Ojugo (1st) Adeniyi Adedipe a.k.a. Apase (2nd), Sola Durodola (3rd), Kayode Ajayi (4th), Oso Farotimi a.ka. Oso Polo (5th), Sola Adenijo a.k.a. Solar (6th) and Rotimi Olanbiwonnu a.k.a. Mentilo (7th). Aderiye, a loyalist of Fayose, was murdered on the same day (September 25, 2014), some hours after people suspected to be political thugs attacked the court, beat up a judge, Justice John Adeyeye. Apanisile (22) told the court that Fayose (who was then governor-elect) gave money to those who followed him to the court on the day of the incident at Spotless Hotel owned by him (Fayose). The witness revealed that Fayose handed the money to the late Omolafe to distribute to the boys who followed him to the court on that fateful day. Apanisile claimed that the late ex-NURTW boss did not give money to the followers of the 1st accused person (Ojugo), who was the Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) at the time which, he said caused a rift among the duo. The witness said: “We went to Spotless Hotel and at the hotel, Fayose gave the late Omolafe money to distribute to those who went to the court but Omolafe did not give the boys of Ojugo money and Ojugo was angry and said he (Omolafe) did not owe him (Ojugo) more than seven bullets.” Under cross-examination from counsel to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants, Mr. Biodun Fasakin, Apanisile said: “We followed Fayose to the court on September 25, 2014 and on that day, I rode on my bike. There was a big crowd of people cheering Fayose on that day.” Under cross-examination from counsel to 5th and 7th defendants, Mr. Lekan Olatawura, Apanisile admitted that he was among who wielded canes on the day of the attack on court. Apanisile added that none of the accused persons in the dock shot Aderiye on the day he was killed. Apanisile had earlier told the court that the late Omolafe adopted him after he lost his parents claiming that his father died in 2008 while his mother died in 2015 but had earlier told the court that he met Omolafe in 2014. He had earlier told the court that the 6th defendant (Adenijo), alongside other defendants stormed the late Omolafe’s private park a white Hilux van on the day the deceased was killed in 2014 but in another breath said he knew Adenijo in 2015. Under cross-examination from counsel to the 6th defendant, Chief Anthony Adeniyi, Apanisile was given a sheet of paper to append his signature with his signature tendered and admitted as Exhibit 19. The witness’ statement volunteered to the Police was earlier tendered by the prosecution counsel and was admitted and marked Exhibit 18. While adjourning the case to next Wednesday, July 19, Justice Ogunmoye stressed that the prosecution should be ready to close its case on the next adjourned date for the defendants to open their defence. http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/14/fayose-distributed-money-us-2014-court-attack-witness-tells-court/ |

Politics › Arewa Youths Urge UN To Label IPOB Terrorist Group by Nne5(op): 5:11pm On Jul 13, 2017 |
*Insist on referendum
From: FRED ITUA, Abuja
More than one month after issuing a quit notice to Nigerians of Igbo extraction to leave the North before the October 1, 2017, Arewa youths, have again, called on the United Nations (UN) to pronounce Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, on Thursday, the Arewa youths, who converged under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Groups, also called on the UN to intervene, by initiating processes for a peaceful referendum, saying that it was the only option to finally settle the Biafran issue.
In a letter addressed to the UN and dated 12th of July, 2017, the groups said since the end of the Nigerian Civil War, Igbo have intermittently continued to taunt and rebel against other parts of the country, by demanding to secede and form an independent country.

Education › Nobel Laureate, Liu Xiaobo, Dies At 61 In Chinese Custody by Nne5(op): 3:52pm On Jul 13, 2017 |
China’s Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo died Thursday while still in custody following a battle with cancer, authorities said, after officials ignored international pleas to let him spend his final days free and abroad. The prominent democracy advocate died aged 61, more than a month after he was transferred from prison to a heavily-guarded hospital to be treated for late-stage liver cancer. The legal bureau in the northeastern city of Shenyang said on its website that Liu died three days after going into intensive care at the First Hospital of China Medical University. The writer’s death silences a government critic who had been a thorn in the side of the authorities for decades and became a symbol of Beijing’s growing crackdown on dissenting voices. Liu’s death puts China in dubious company as he became the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate to die in custody since German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky, who passed away in a hospital while held by the Nazis in 1938. International human rights groups, Western governments and local activists had urged authorities to free Liu and grant his final wish to be treated abroad. Germany had offered to treat Liu, calling for a “signal of humanity” from China. The United States also said it was willing to take him in. But officials insisted that Liu was receiving treatment from top Chinese doctors since being granted medical parole following his diagnosis in late May. In response to calls to allow Liu to leave China, the foreign ministry repeatedly said other countries should not interfere in China’s internal affairs. In early July, Liu’s Chinese doctors said he was not healthy enough to be sent abroad for treatment, a position that was contradicted by US and German medical experts invited by the hospital to examine Liu’s condition. The physicians offered to treat the laureate at hospitals in their home countries. Human rights groups decried the way the government treated Liu, accusing authorities of manipulating information about his health and refusing to let him leave because they were afraid he would use the freedom to denounce China’s one-party Communist regime. As a gaunt Liu lay in his sickbed, a video was leaked showing the Western doctors praising their Chinese counterparts — a scene that was denounced as “grotesque propaganda” by Human Rights Watch. The German embassy said the video seemed to show that security organs were “steering the process, not medical experts”. – Empty chair – Liu was arrested in 2008 after co-writing Charter 08, a bold petition that called for the protection of basic human rights and reform of China’s political system. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in December 2009 for “subversion”. At the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2010 he was represented by an empty chair. Liu is also known for his role in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing. His wife, Liu Xia, was placed under house arrest in 2010, but she was allowed to see him at the hospital. Her fate will now worry human rights groups, which had urged the government to free her alongside Liu Xiaobo. Politics › Buhari Speaks From London, Sympathizes With Bisi Akande Over Wife’s Death by Nne5(op): 1:14pm On Jul 13, 2017 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday expressed his “heart-felt” sympathy with a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bisi Akande over the death of his wife, Omowunmi Bisi Akande. Buhari, who is currently recuperating from an undisclosed illness in London described the loss as an “irreparable” one. This was contained in a letter he personally wrote, following an earlier telephone call to the bereaved APC Chieftain and was contained in a statement sent to DAILY POST by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu. Buhari’s message reads, “I received the very sad news of the death of your dearly beloved wife, Madam Omowunmi Akande this morning. I am following our phone call with this letter of condolence, which comes from my heart. “To lose a wife, a dear wife after 50 years, a constant and loving companion through good and bad times, is a blow only a man of unshakeable faith can withstand. Please extend my personal condolences to the immediate and wider Akande family and to friends of the family for this irreparable loss. “May Allah give you the strength and Iman to endure her passing away.” This is coming at a time the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo said his principal is recuperating fast and will return to the country soon. Against this backdrop, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose had faulted the comments of Osinbajo, saying he would expose damaging pictures showing that Buhari is critically ill. Politics › Arewa Consultative Forum Gives Conditions For Restructuring Of Nigeria by Nne5(op): 10:21am On Jul 13, 2017 |
Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called for clarity on the restructuring of Nigeria, as there appears to be varying meanings to different groups.
The ACF said the apologists of the restructuring of Nigeria should define the meaning of the concept in the present democratic setting.
A statement released after its national executive council meeting on Wednesday in Kaduna, said the only acceptable restructuring, is one that will enhance unity, harmony and peace among Nigerians.
“ACF has observed with keen interest the current nationwide debate on the term, restructuring of the country, as being canvassed by some people, groups and even prominent citizens. The term, however, means different things to different people or groups.
“To some, it is true federalism, whatever that means. For others it is fiscal federalism, while some groups tout resource control, yet we have those for resource ownership.
“ACF notes with regret that those clamouring or demanding for the so-called restructuring are yet to define what they actually mean by the concept and its application in our present democratic setting. In most cases, the meaning depends on which section of the country or where the person advocating it comes from.
“It is, therefore, the considered view of the ACF that any acceptable restructuring meant to improve the unity, stability, harmony and peaceful coexistence of the country must be based on just, fair and equitable principles to all Nigerians that come with clarity of definition,” read the statement signed by Mohammed Biu, ACF publicity secretary. http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/13/arewa-consultative-forum-gives-conditions-restructuring-nigeria/

Politics › Group Wants Danbazau Sacked Over Taraba Killings by Nne5(op): 9:57am On Jul 13, 2017 |
Godwin Isenyo, Kaduna A coalition of Christian groups from the 19 northern states and Abuja, under the aegis of the Patriotic Christian Front has accused the Federal Government of showing ‘special interest’ in the criminal activities of Fulani herdsmen in Taraba State. They faulted the role allegedly played by the Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazau, after the attacks in Taraba State and accused him of pursuing an Islamic agenda. The Christian group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, relieve the minister of his appointment. Addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Wednesday, PCF National President, Timothy Nasso, also alleged that the Buhari-led government was out to destabilise the state because Governor Darius Ishaku is the only “Christian governor from the North-East.” Nasso argued that any attempt to intimidate, harass or cow the state governor simply because of his religious inclination would be resisted by Christians from the northern part of the country. They alleged that the Federal Government deployment of high-powered delegation to the state was an indication that it had a special interest in Taraba State. Nasso said, “The sudden interest which the Federal Government showed by immediately deploying the Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahaman Danbazau (retd); Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Jumai A’isha Alhassan; the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris; the General Officer Commanding 3rd Amoured Division, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Ahanato; and Senator Yusuf from Taraba Central Senatorial zone is an indication of government’s vested interest in the Taraba crisis.” Copyright PUNCH.
