Crime › 2 Herdsmen In Court For Allegedly Raping 2 Sisters by Nne5(op): 3:30pm On Jun 23, 2017
Jos – Two herdsmen, Shuaibu Samaila, 21, and Bashiru Mohammed, 24, on Friday appeared before a Jos Upper Area Court, sitting at Kasuwan Nama, for allegedly raping two sisters, aged 17 and 21.

The duo first appeared on May 18 and were specifically accused of criminal conspiracy and rape.

The police prosecutor, Mr E. A. Inegbenoise, during the arraignment, told the court that the victims’ father, a resident of Dawul District in Jos South Local Government, reported the matter at the ‘K’ Vom Divisional Police Headquarters, on March 29.

Inegbenoise alleged that the accused persons attacked the sisters in a bush, while on their way to their farm, and raped them.

“The accused persons used ropes to tie the sisters on trees when they put up some resistance; they viciously fingered them and raped them thereafter,” he alleged.

The prosecutor said that the sisters suffered severe bruises and blood loss in the process.

“They (victims) later reported to their father, who promptly reported to the police,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the accused persons, in a confessional statement, owned up to the crime.

When the trial started on Friday, however, the duo denied the allegation and were granted bail by the judge, Mr Mustapha Yahaya, after their Counsel, Mr David Adudu, prayed for it.

Adudu, in his prayer, cited section 36(1) of the 1999 constitution which stated that an accused person was innocent until proved otherwise.

He said that if the bail was granted, his clients would not jump bail and would never interfere with police investigation.

The prosecutor, however, objected to the bail, and expressed the fear that the accused persons would jump bail.

He explained that the offence was not bailable unless in special circumstances and in the interest of justice.

The judge, after listening to both parties, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 each, in addition to producing one surety.

He said that the sureties must be guardians of the accused or ward heads residing within the jurisdiction of the court.

The matter was adjourned to July 21, for hearing. (NAN)

Politics › Almajiri System Has Contributed To Backwardness In North-east—lawmaker by Nne5(op): 7:00am On Jun 23, 2017
By Suzan Edeh

Bauchi—THE member representing Dass constituency in Bauchi State, Maryam Bagel, has called for street begging school system by children (Amaljiri) to be abolished, saying the system is a major cause of backwardness in the North-East.

The lawmaker spoke, yesterday, during the celebration of the Day of the African Child by Bauchi State Television Authority, BATV, in collaboration with UNICEF.

She said: “Many stakeholders in the North-East are shying away from the negative implications of the Almajiri system due to political motives.

“Those days, young men who were interested in acquiring knowledge travelled to places like Sokoto, Maiduguri.

“Now we have Islamic teachers almost in every neighbourhood. So the essence of the Almajiri system is now defeated.”

Politics › Biafra: Why Are Obasanjo, IBB, Others Not Talking On Agitation? – Doyin Okupe by Nne5(op): 5:11pm On Jun 22, 2017
By Seun Opejobi on June 22, 2017

A former aide to the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has urged Nigerians to pray for the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo because he needs “wisdom from God” to handle the agitation for Biafra.

The former aide questioned why past leaders have refused to talk about the agitation in order to address some of the grievances raised. Those he blamed for remaining silent are Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsam Abubakar and TY Danjuma.

He made the remark while reacting to a video in which Igbo youths in their thousands besieged the compound of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, chanting “give us Biafra, give us Biafra.”

In a statement he signed, the former Presidential aide berated the federal government for not taking the issue of Biafra seriously.

He accused the government of pushing the Igbo people to the wall by not treating them fairly in the scheme of things in Nigeria.

Okupe also faulted the Presidency for not inviting Kanu during the recent consultation with leaders of thoughts from the South-East region.

He accused the federal government of making bad judgment when it comes to the situation of the Igbo people.

The statement reads, “There is indeed a “god” in Abuja. He is a very prideful and powerful god and his head office is in the Villa, the seat of power.

“Unlike Jehovah God, it does not give liberty to his subjects to exercise their will. He is captivating, imposing and compelling, forcing his will at random on his subjects and their subordinates.

“During President Obasanjo’s tenure, a very senior minister and a distinguished gentleman, during a period of national crisis, got up and with all his weight slammed the Presidents table and retorted vociferously ” Mr President, after God in this country, it is you, your word is law.!” When I heard that statement I knew it was god of Abuja that was speaking through the Hon. minister.

“Abuja itself is a Jerusalem of some sort. For as mountains souround Jerusalem, so they also souround Abuja, Also making it a naturally fortified city and giving a sense of comfort and safety to its Inhabitants . ( I pray my brother Femi fanikayode does not read this piece. if he does he will call me definitely to correct me about the comparison between the Holy city of Jerusalem and Abuja!!)

“The Abuja god and the water tight security of Abuja often times make the custodians of power make inadvertent misjudgements about the situations elsewhere in the country. And I should know haven been a victim and witness to such misjudgements several times while around the corridors of power.

“This morning I could not withhold the tears from my eyes when I saw the video of thousands of ibos, mostly youths, waving Biafran Flags and chanting in Nnamdi Kanu’s compound “all we are saying is give us Biafra”

“I cried because I empathised with them and I wondered how we managed to push a people to such a position of hopelessness and despair. I also fearfully wondered if by any act of commission or omission I have played any role in this ignoble act (s).

“Last week I wrote an open letter to the acting President . one of my recommendations was that the federal government meets with IPOB leadership and southeast stakeholders. “Unfortunately the God of Abuja speaking through the Ag. President said” the IPOB leaders are not members of the leaders if thought in the southeast.

“Yet in a country with a sitting government, the IPOB Leadership gives a sit at home order and it is obeyed in totality by the entire Igbo Nation.

“It has come to a sad point today that the IGBO and the actions or inaction of Prof Yemi Osinbajo will define the future of Nigeria.

“Yet I believe that there are still living legends of our time in this country who can move in to stop this dangerous insidious slipping into darkness.

“Why is obasanjo quiet? why is there no sound from IBB? What happened to soldier turned diplomat, Gen Abdusalam? Not a word from Gen Danjuma, Gen Gowon, Adamu Ciroma “Alex Ekweme, Chief Akinjide, Alani Akinriade and othershuh??

“If all the above elders and leaders who know the ropes stand aloof, why can’t the Ag. President take counsel from them privately and individually and deliver himself from the god of Abuja who always misleads his subjects until they are removed one way or the other.

“This is no longer an Igbo affair. It is a total NIGERIAN PROBLEM. Lets all put hands and heads together and find a solution, any peaceful solution before this impending National disaster overtakes our nation.

“In the meantime let the rest of the nation go on our knees and pray for Prof Osinbajo that the God of creation, who is greater than all other gods and who has saddled him, as Ag. President with the responsibility to lead the country at this time to give him the divine wisdom courage and genuine helpers to see our nation through these difficult times.”

Crime › Three Women Abduct 10-month Old Boy Sell Him For N650,000 In Imo by Nne5(op): 4:51pm On Jun 22, 2017
Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri

The police in Imo State on Thursday handed over a ten months old boy, Tochukwu Okechukwu Peter, who was stolen and sold for N650,000, to his parents, Mr and Mrs Okechukwu Peter.

This is coming four days after the command paraded five women for stealing a baby at a burial ceremony in the state and selling him for N600,000 to a buyer in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Parading the three suspects before newsmen, Ogechi Chukwuocha, 42 years, Calista Igwe, 38, and Chimezie, 32 before handing over the recovered child to his parents, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, said that the child was stolen from his mother, Udoka Peter, on June 15, 2017, at Ogbaku in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.

The Police spokesperson asserted that while the prime suspect, One Favor Nwekem, who allegedly stole the baby from the baby’s mother, was still at large, the operatives of the state Department of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence bust the syndicate’s den in Orlu on June 20 and recovered the child, unhurt.

Enwerem said “On June 15, one Udoka Peter, reported the case of the stealing of her ten months old son by one Favour Nwekem. The operatives of Department of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence swung into action. On June 20, we raided their hideout in Orlu and recovered the stolen boy.

Investigation revealed that one Ogechi Chukwuocha bought the child for N650,000, from Calista Igwe, while Chimezie Okafor was the link person. Unfortunately, the prime suspect ran away, but we are trailing him and will soon nab him”.

When interviewed, the alleged buyer of the child, Chukwuocha, who confessed to the crime, said that she paid N650,000 for the boy.

The widow who stated that she needed a male child desperately, said she did not know the child was stolen. She said her buyer promised to give her cover up documents before the police rounded them up.

One of the suspects, Igwe, confessed that she got N27,000 from the deal.

The father of the recovered child who hailed from Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Peter, who expressed delight to God, said that stealing of his son brought untold trauma to his household, especially to his 35-year-old wife, Udoka.

Politics › Market Women Protest Use Of Weighing Scales In Osun by Nne5(op): 3:23pm On Jun 22, 2017
A section of women at Igbona Market in Olorunda Local Government Area of Osun state, on Thursday, staged a peaceful demonstration to protest against the ultimatum given by the Osun state government over the use of weighing scale known as ‘Osuwon Omoluabi’.

The less than 100 women under the aegis of Igbona Market Women Petty Traders Association, closed their shops and stormed the Government Secretariat, Abere armed with their measuring bowls.

Recall that in a bit to standardize trade activities in the state, the state government of Osun had introduced weighing scale and encouraged all market in the state to align with this policy.

The policy which was introduced about a year ago with the support of various market leaders across the state when operational, will end the imbalance in the measurement of goods in the markets.

Though the government through representative of market associations had agreed to allow timeline frame of one year for the policy to take effect on their members, the market women had pleaded with government to extend the enforcement.

The government had subsidized the scaling for the market women, a development that caused the government to bear the larger burden.

Addressing the protesters, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Commerce, Hon. Simeon Olufemi Popoola, noted that the government will look into the pleadings of the traders.

Nigeria is the only country amongst its neighbours without standardizstandardized measuring scales for its trading activities.

Politics › 2019 Elections We Need Funds For Diaspora Voting – INEC by Nne5(op): 8:40pm On Jun 21, 2017
Yakubu made the call in Ibadan on Wednesday, at a Conference organised by the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan.

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has urged the National Assembly to quicken the amendment of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.
Yakubu made the call in Ibadan on Wednesday, at an International Conference organised by the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan.

The theme of the conference is “Enfranchising the African Diaspora: Comparing Notes across Sub-Saharan Africa.’’

Yakubu was represented by a National Commissioner of INEC, Prof. Anthonia Simbinne.

He said that the conference was organised to underscore the importance of the card reader and electronic voting towards deepening the electoral process and allowing Diaspora voting.

The chairman said that although the 2015 elections cost approximately N100 billion, conducting Diaspora voting in the next 18 months would gulp millions of dollars.

He explained that Diaspora voting would start with registration of Nigerians in Diaspora.

“The commission is ready for Diaspora voting, but problematic issues related to Diaspora voter registration components must be resolved,’’ he said.

Yakubu said that there was the need for deeper and further consultations with stakeholders in as much as the Diaspora voting was desirable and possible.

“It is important to state categorically that the commission is committed to implementing any and every activity that will improve the electoral process and accessibility of franchise to all Nigerians.

“The introduction of card reader and electronic voting has led to instances where polls have had to be cancelled due to non-use of smart card reader,’’ he said.

In her address, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said that the discussion about Diaspora could no longer be relegated.

Represented by her Special Assistant on Media, Abdulraham Balogun, she said that there was the need to examine certain dynamics, intricacies and realities of the Nigerian Diaspora.

According to Daburu-Erewa, there are several ways African nations can move to enfranchise their Diaspora when adequate legislative frameworks have been affirmed.

“I do not propose an absolute or sweeping legislative framework. The political climate of individual nations should dictate the texture of the policy formulation,’’ she said.

The Head, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Institute of African Studies, Dr Senayon Olaoluwa, said that the conference was organised to attend to the political needs of Nigerians in Diaspora.

Olaoluwa said that the place of the Diaspora on their homeland development could no longer be undermined.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, said that the institution had continued to offer leadership by being the first to have a programme focusing on the Diaspora and Transnational Studies.

Olayinka said that African Diaspora could not continue to be pushed to the margin.

He said that African Diaspora had taken the centre stage in the transformation of Africa in politics and economy as well as social fronts.

Sports › We’ll Qualify For Cameroon 2019 AFCON – Omeruo by Nne5(op): 6:08am On Jun 18, 2017
Jacob Ajom

Following the outrage that trailed last weekend’s 2-0 loss Nigeria suffered in the hands of South Africa in Uyo, Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo has pleaded with Nigerian football fans not to give up on the team just yet.

Omeruo who made a surprise appearance at the national stadium Lagos, Friday said, “we still have five more games to determine our fate. Nigerians should continue to give us the desired support and we will definitely excel.”

Although he regretted Eagles’ loss to the Bafana Bafana, he was sure the team would bounce back from that adversity. “I just see it as a motivation. We have to work extra hard. For South Africa we will still play them at their home. We have a young team that plays really well. We were all shocked about the loss. By the time we play the other games in the group, we will see,” he said.

The Chelsea defender was optimistic the defeat to Bafana Bafana would not derail the Eagles’ march to the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.

Omeruo asked Nigerians not to panic over the forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon.

He said, “We just have to keep training and remain focused. I don’t think anyone will take it lightly. Our midfielders, Mikel, Moses and other senior players will have returned from injury by then. I think we will be ready for Cameroon.”

On his future at Chelsea, Omeruo said , “For now I am still a Chelsea player. I have always been out on loan and now the loan is ended, I will return to my parent club, Chelsea in July for the pre-season.

It is then I will know whether I will be given out on loan or I will be staying there. The decision hasn’t been reached yet. The most important thing is for me to keep playing. If I am to stay and not play, then I would want to go elsewhere, a place I can be playing regularly.”

Politics › FG Gladdened By Accolades Showered On Prof. Osotimehin by Nne5(op): 5:36pm On Jun 17, 2017
The Federal Government says it is gladdened by the accolades showered on Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA), for his exemplary work and impact on the global community.

The Nigeria’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande, stated this while delivering the tribute by the Federal Government at the valedictory night for Osotimehin in New York.

Bande expressed Nigeria’s gratitude at the outpouring of encomium for the late UNFPA chief who died on June 4 in his home in New York at the age of 68 years.

“Nigeria joins the rest of the grieving world in mourning but also celebrating the life of an illustrious citizen, as a Government and people.

“This gathering today barely whispered that he is a Nigerian. We take no offence. We take pride in the fact that we produced him.

“His commitment on global health issues has been attested to by all through the testimonies that you gave.

“So today, we are proud to give him to the world. In Nigeria, Prof. Osotimehin was a distinguished teacher and professional public servant,” the Nigeria’s Permanent Representative said.

The Nigerian envoy noted the exceptional legacy of Osotimehin at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital.

He said the deceased sustained the pride of the College as the primary and principal parent institution for post graduate training in medicine in West Africa and by extension, in Africa.

According to him, the stewardship of the former Nigeria’s Minister of Health at the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, was also distinguished by hard work and excellence.

“That was what we really knew him for and it was those qualities that he brought to bear and that made him attracted to the world system.

“Nigeria is gladdened by the statements by all about celebrating him and continuing the work he did, which did not die with him.

“And we can only affirm that with the same commitment, we will carry on the work that has been done by him, as Government of Nigeria.

“I want to thank all of you for rallying around us and the family during this loss of a great and distinguished Nigerian, loving family man, politician, public servant and public health professional.”

Ms Amina Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, who frequently betrayed emotion throughout the valedictory, described Osotimehin as “a big brother and a friend”.

Mohammed, who said she was still shocked at his death, recalled how the late UNFPA boss welcomed and supported her to quickly found her feet at the UN in 2013.

Osotimehin, who was the most senior African Under-Secretary-General and served as Chair of the UN Senior Africans Group until his death, was also honoured by the Group of African States at the UN.

The group, in a tribute by Amb. Ignace Lufuta, the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, expressed its condolences to the Government and the people of Nigeria.

“He will be remembered by the African Group as a statesman and worthy son of Africa who in particular engaged and prevailed with African leadership on important issues as it affects the continent and its people.”

The Executive Director of UNICEF, Dr Anthony Lake; Executive Director of UNAIDS, Dr Michel Sidibé; and Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Conflicts, Adama Dieng also paid special tribute to their late colleague.

Others who honoured the night of tribute included the Permanent Representatives of countries at the UN, family, friends and members of the Nigerian community.
