Goodluck Jonathan noted that his administration spent excess crude oil revenue because pressure from governors was much – He said he tried to fight corruption but the effort was frustrated – He said his performance in the agricultural sector was the best in Nigeria’s history Goodluck Jonathan has revealed how he was forced to spend from the excess crude oil revenue account during his administration. The former president made this revelation during interview programme with Bloomberg TV. Jonathan revealed that state governors were to blame for pressurising him to spend from the reserve fund thereby reducing the $20 billion at the inception of his administration left by Olusegun Obasanjo to about $2 billion when he left office on May 29, 2015. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Goodluck Jonathan “At any time the earnings (from oil) drop, the governors would insist that there is no place in our laws that actually say that the federal government should keep the reserve. They always insisted that a part of it (excess crude revenue account) should be brought.” Jonathan pointed out that while some argued that the crude oil reserve account was to be used for rainy days, others said it should be used during time of financial difficulty. “Yes, it is also part of our own reserves. But, when I was there, I tried to make a special fund called a sovereign wealth fund, so that it would not be easy for one to take from there.” The former president identified the agricultural sector as where he made the biggest transformation and that it was the best in the country’s history. He said this achievement led to the then minister of agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, to be elected president of the African Development Bank. He however regretted that his administration did not do well in the mineral sector industry despite all efforts to attract investors. “The blue print and everything was worked out. So, if somebody says I did not diversify the economy, I will say that is not true. Of course, I was president of Nigeria. Sometimes, when people ask me question, it would seem I was the president of Nigeria from Independence till 2015. I was president for five years.” On the issue that corruption was commonplace during his administration, Jonathan said there was nothing new about it as it had been the case since the country’s independence. “Perception is based on what people say. In Nigeria, somehow it has been a routine. From the collapse of the First Republic, what the military said was the reason for taking over was corruption.“When the Second Republic collapsed, the same was the story. If there is a major change in government where one political party is taking over power from another one, there must be issues that would be raised. “Yes. I cannot say the country, from beginning of independence, there was no corruption. Yes, there was corruption. I did well to cut down on corruption. My approach was not to make money available to anybody to touch.” The former president said his administration was able to eliminate corruption in fertilizer subsidies but could not do same in the oil industry. “The very people that have been accusing us of corruption are the very people that frustrated it. It’s unfortunate,” he lamented. Meanwhile, Jonathan also admitted that he has been investigated for alleged corruption during his administration by President Muhmammadu Buhari’s government. When asked if he has been investigated, Jonathan replied: “Of course, obviously, they investigated and I’ve been investigated. – A teacher who works at Ekiti Baptist High School, steals a pot of amala from her neighbour’s kitchen due to unpaid salary – The teacher takes the pot of amala to her own room and serves her two children the amala with palm oil – The owner of the food touched by the action of the teacher, went back to her apartment and brought soup for the teacher and her children to eat to satisfaction There was drama in Igede Ekiti, the headquarters of Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area in Ekiti state on Sunday, June 5, after a teacher (name withheld), stole a pot of yam flour meal, popularly known as amala, from a neighbour’s flat. According to a source that lives within the Odogede area where the incident occurred, the teacher who works at Ekiti Baptist High School, stole the pot of amala from her neighbour’s kitchen, took it to her own room and served her two children the amala with palm oil, The Nation reports. It was gathered that the incident happened in a building made up of three flats. Days after a teacher (name withheld), stole a pot of yam flour meal, popularly known as amala, from a neighbour’s flat in Igede Ekiti The source said: “The incident happened at about 1.30pm on Sunday, June 5, when majority of the residents had arrived from their churches and the teacher could not go to church because of the prevailing condition. “The neighbour on arrival at home prepared an amala, but unknown to her, the teacher had been watching and bidding her time when the owner of the food would leave the kitchen before she struck. “As the woman preparing the food left the kitchen, the teacher went there and stole the pot of amala and carried it to her room. “But owner of the food screamed and was startled to find the teacher and her two children eating the amala with palm oil. “The owner of the food, apparently touched by the action of the teacher, went back to her apartment and brought soup for the teacher and her children to eat to satisfaction.” READ ALSO: Workers must resume to get paid – Fayose It was also gathered that many civil servants have relocated to their villages to carry out farming because of the uncertainty surrounding the time they would be paid. Another source said: “Many of my colleagues had relocated to their villages and hometown to till the land and cultivate crops to keep body and soul together. “You know this industrial action is making us to devise means to survive, you know life is easier in rural locations and many of them have planted crops like maize, which can be harvested within three months. “Others are also cultivating cash crops as a fall back option anytime retirement comes. We just have to survive because this is not the best of times for civil servants. “I also know others who are now learning trades like fashion designing, photography, barbing, decoration, cake making and other crafts. “Those who combine business with government work and those who are clerics now have more time to practise their vocations.” Governor Ayodele Fayose had asked workers in Ekiti who are on strike to call off their actions before they will be paid. The workers began on strike on Thursday, May 26, and this has brought Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, to a halt as government offices and public schools remained shut. But Fayose noted that the difficult economic situation was not peculiar to Ekiti alone as the state depends much on statutory allocations. It was gathered that December 2015 salary was paid to workers in March but only the net was paid without deductions to cooperatives, check off dues to unions, among other miscellaneous payment totaling N512 million. President Barack Obama will lease a home in Washington, D.C.'s Kalorama neighborhood after he leaves the White House next year, CNN has confirmed. The real estate is reportedly owned by Joe Lockhart, who served as White House press secretary under former President Bill Clinton. CNN reached out to Lockhart, who declined to comment on the news, which was first reported by Politico. The house was built in 1928 and has nine bedrooms and eight-and-a-half bathrooms. It was sold in 2014 for more than $5 million. Obama has said he and his family will remain in Washington home after he departs 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in January 2017, a change from most former presidents. "We're going to have to stay a couple of years in D.C. probably so Sasha can finish," he said in March about his youngest daughter. "Transferring someone in the middle of high school? Tough." CNN's Eli Watkins contributed to this report. http://edition.cnn.com/2016/05/25/politics/obama-kalorama-washington-dc-leases-house/index.html?sr=fbCNN052516obama-kalorama-washington-dc-leases-house0856PMStoryGalLink&linkId=24875748

Former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, has been barred from seeking medical treatments abroad. According to Cable.ng, Okon Abang, justice of the federal high court in Abuja, rejected an application for leave to travel abroad for medical treatment filed by Metuh in the wake of his ill health. The justice stated further that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain such an application because Metuh had been ordered to deposit his international passport with the chief registrar of the high court. “This is not a case of sympathy, but a case of law. This court has no jurisdiction to entertain this application,” he held. “The court is not Father Christmas to give to the defendant what it did not ask for. “The application lacks merit. It is accordingly dismissed. The court cannot set aside its decision,” the justice held. Additional reports to come in by Nnenna Ibe who was in court as at the time of filing this report. https://www.naij.com/840332-breaking-metuh-barred-seeking-medical-treatment-abroad.html?source=breaking |
