Well, if you have legal issues , whether herdsman or farmer...better to go to the law first.

Most of these issues are due to people thinking they could solve their problems themselves.

The problem is, people think the Police cannot help them. And so, laws get taken into hands...

The government can not claim to be ignorant of what's happening but because it's their brethens that are perpetrating this crime they turn blind eyes.

They tagged it farmers and herders clash but how can this be true when farmers who were on the own land are being attacked and killed by Fulani herdsmen?

The final and only solution to these crises is for govt to place a ban on nomadic rearing of cows.

Here is the problem, and before I talk, I would like to state that I 1) am not here to excuse any one 2) I am here to talk about the why so that 3) somebody does something about the solution.

30 years ago, there were no news of any attack by herdsmen on farmers. Infact, the only news I recall that made headlines in 1993, was when a farmer was hit in the eye by an arrow fired by a herdsman. That was news.

Also, back in the day, there was one rural area that when I first visited in 1997, wide swathes of the area were still basically bushland, no farms, nothing. When I revisited the area last year, there was a lot of farms in areas where there was no farm.

Also, in 1963, our populaiton was 55million people. Today, it is 200million people. Nigeria's land mass has not changed (unless you want to consider the reclaimed land at Lekki as land mass).

What does this tell us?

The fact is, our population is growing, and this means the land that used to support Fulanis and farmers no longer supports either of them.

In one part of Benue, decades ago, Fulani herdsmen used to graze their cows deep in the bush, never seeing a farmer for miles around. Now, where there was once bush and forest, there are farmlands. The number of Fulanis too is growing, as is the number of herds of cows. So also is the number of farms.

And our cities are growing. In the FCT, there are areas that were once bushland that are now concreted over. And the land is growing.

This is what is fueling the crisis.

The land is not enough for fulanis and farmers.

That is why we are having crisis all over Africa. Our populaiton is growing. And most of our countries are not industrial at all...but agrarian. And the lad mass avialable for farming is reducing by the year. Add the fact that the Sahara is driving people down SOuth, and the Boko crisis too is making matters worse.

That is why someone needs to tell all our governors, LG chairmern, and even Aso Rock, that the time has come to sit up and start implementing programmes to mitigate this. For starters, education needs to icnrease, we need to end things like herding cows, we need to develop our railway system, even if it means taking loans for the thing...because back in the day, cows were being transported by rail in the 1960's...until corruption wrecked our rail ways in the 1970's. If our railways were still working, by now, all cows would have been transported by rail, and it would have been a few archaic holdouts that would be transporting their cows by wlaking.

And people should learn to take their legal issues to the POlice. Yes, the police has failed, but if these herdsmen had taken their legal issues there, instead of attacking inncoent villagers, maybe no one would have been dead.

We can shout Buhari, and we should do so. But these things were happening under PDP , and we were all shouting PDP is useless. Yet nothing changes because the people shouting PDP is useless, most of them were doing so because they wanted to chop. Just as the peoplenow shouting APC is useless...most of them want to get into power. And the thing is....APC is useless right now. Governor Rufai needs to put out the fires in his state.

But it takes far more than arm chair critiques, and arm chair bigotry. It takes people at the grassroot and the top being willing to change. And we have to take some hard decisions now, or else Rwanda 1994 ; the Nigerian connection is ready for filming.

Mr.Man first and foremost, how can you say the above. There's no legal backing to moving cows about and destroying crops.

There's no where in a sane world where cows will be allowed to roam about all in the name of herding.
