Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Buruji Kashamu , has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of plotting to abduct and extradite him to the US. Kashamu, the Senator-elect for the Ogun East District, alleged that Obasanjo was working with local and foreign security agencies to achieve the aim. The allegations were contained in a petition filed by Kashamu through his lawyer, Ajibola Oluyede, and submitted to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The petition, titled “Prince Buruji Kashamu: Abduction plans by United States of America’s agents in collaboration with law enforcement agencies in Nigeria”, was addressed to the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof. Ben Angwe. “The current plan to abduct him (Kashamu) is an admission by the US authorities that there is no case against him and is a design instigated and commissioned by Obasanjo who seeks revenge against him for the comprehensive political defeat Obasanjo suffered because of Kashamu in the PDP,” Oluyede wrote. Oluyede further urged the commission to intervene in the matter “in accordance with the jurisdiction expressly given to your commission by the National Human Rights Act 1995 as amended to carry out an inquiry into the matter in order to establish the culpability and compromise of certain institution in this despicable plan and to protect our client’s fundamental human right to liberty, life and dignity of his person.” “Kashamu’s enquiry revealed that indeed there had been moves by US officials within the region to secure the assistance of the head of the INTERPOL division in Nigeria, Mr. Solomon Arase, a Deputy Inspector General of Police, for the arrest and delivery to the US officials of Kashamu for transportation to the US without following the due process required by the Nigeria Extradition Act,” the petition continued. Kashamu was reportedly indicted in 1998 for drug dealing in the US, a charge which he has vehemently denied. http:///A7faa8 |

Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has appealed for calm after recent violence against migrants in South Africa. He has been accused of fuelling the attacks, which have killed at least seven people, after saying foreigners should "go back to their countries". More than 300 people have been arrested in the unrest. Thousands packed into a stadium in the eastern city of Durban to hear King Zwelithini's address. He says his comments were distorted by the media. In King Zwelithini's speech, he said it was not fair to blame the violence on one individual, pointing out that there had been several previous outbreaks of xenophobic violence in South Africa. He added that the South African Human Rights Commission should investigate the hate speech charges against him without hindrance. Among the latest arrests were three men detained in connection with the murder of a Mozambican national in Alexandra, a township in Johannesburg. South African photojournalist James Outway witnessed Emmanuel Sithole being stabbed to death in broad daylight and has spoken to the BBC about what he saw: Except for Mr Sithole, those killed have been in Durban, the biggest city in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. They are an Ethiopian, a Mozambican, someone who is believed to be Zimbabwean and three South Africans. bbc.co.uk |

Nigeria is set to take a hard stand against South Africa over the xenophobic attacks going on in the country. According to South African news portal eNCA: An official with the newly elected All Progressive Congress (APC), Tolu Adesanya, confirmed to eNCA that they handed down a memorandum to the South African embassy in Lagos on Wednesday. In the memorandum, the APC party officials and members of civil society groups have demanded that South Africa take swift action against attacks on foreign nationals. Adesanya said that Nigeria will shut down South African businesses if their demands are not met by South Africa. “We actually handed a letter to the South African embassy yesterday, making them aware that we are not happy with what is going on in South Africa. Should there be any more attacks, we are going to shut down South African businesses in Nigeria. That is MTN, Multi Choice, Shoprite etc,” said APC official Tolu Adesanya. http:///1CSW8lk |
