if we were hateful, 5millions Nigerians would be out of Ghana by tomorrow.
But no one have your kind of time
And do you think that would make any difference to Nigerian economy if Ghana did?

Nigerians are not in your country to beg or engage in menial jobs there and get paid to return back to Nigeria ok?
This is typically unlike millions of Nigeriens whom their families back home may not feed well if their people in Nigeria do not take money back home. Hell NO!

third is trade! Nigerians bring in stuff like earphone, phone batteries, beverages, DVD's etc from Nigeria to sell in Ghana.. when they make money they take back to Nigeria
Everyone knows that traders add to economy of a place (even though they remit or not).

This can never be compared to people who come to beg and perform menial jobs to get paid and return the money back to their countries. This is exactly what millions of Nigeriens do in Nigeria.

The same dynamics of consumption do not exist across african countries merely because they are in africa. Go back in this thread and see a presentation i made on mobile money usage and the dynamics therein in Kenya. I lifted it from a pdf , and it was done by a nigerian marketing company nonetheless. Kenyans consume differently than what you would expect.
Lemme give you an example. How many SA companies have tried and not succeeded on the kenyan scene? Quite a number, the most famous of which is SAB Miller, the makers of castle beer. They wandered into the market and met a formidable opponent in the name of EABL who played patriotic card to keep its decades long customer base. Admittedly a cheap stunt, but it worked.
When it comes to internet access, 4 factors stand out clearly:
1. the arrival of undersea cables such as SEACOM(and 2 others) and a massive roll out of a nationwide network of fibre optic cables that criss cross the country. This infrastructure is given the same priority as roads and other physical infrastructure.
2. The availability of a wide range of cheap smartphones, mostly of chinese manufacture. Somebody in the phone section of NL asked a question as to why smartphones are much cheaper on jumia kenya than jumia nigeria, and i gave an answer.
3. A deliberate and massive drive by govt to incorporate ICT education from day 1 in primary school. It might have had hiccups at inception , but its surely steaming ahead now.Come to Kenya and see loads upon loads of rural and urban kids swiping away at tablets and turning on their school issue laptops like any western kids. I kid you not.
4. The massive upswing in electrification across the country. Its been happening at a frightening pace esp in the last 3 years. The access to electricity goes hand in hand with the desire to own appliances. You should come to Kenya and go to a newly connected small town today and see how the demand for refrigerators has sky rocketed. Along with such demand comes a need to own the knowledge to operate them and most of this can be found on the internet. People in rural areas have farming, church, family whatsapp groups and many people also want email addresses in order to "look modern".

Are all these factors present in the countries you mentioned in the exact same intensity as kenya?

You should see it within a country specific context. African contexts differ. For example, what is the favorite hot beverage in Nigeria?
Ps: I am a keen Quora participant/reader too. Love it.
Well, i don't know what else to say again.

All i can do is at least acknowledge the fact that Kenya is among the African nations with the highest internet access.
(A more neutral point for our discordant sources).

it's not true! Nigerians in Ghana remit alot of money back to Nigeria. ask yourself why many are coming to Ghana daily apart from educational reasons?
There are mostly 2 things that take Nigerians to Ghana
1)Education
2) Internet fraud.

Those who come for educational purposes add to your economy, while those who come for internet fraud also add to your economy too!
The internet fraudsters do not defraud or target Ghanaians! Their targets are mostly Europeans and Asians. These Nigerians also spend part of this fraudulent money (from Abroad) in Ghana and adds to your economy.
Nigerians do not come to work in Ghana. Hell NO. Which jobs does Ghana have to offer our people??

And many of those Nigerians are adding to the Ghanaian economy. They are nor begging or doing menial jobs there at least.

In Nigeria on the other hand, we have millions of Nigeriens who come to Nigeria to beg and engage in menial jobs and make remittances back to Niger.

You're just stubborn. Who between wikipedia and the website i gave you are more accurate and up to date. You think the UN has never been fed and dished out bogus data? How many times will you be told wikipedia is a mere guide and so so many of it's entries out of date. Its content is user generated and verified by peers. Many many times they are way off the mark.

I hope the data didn't shock you, its just bloody true, sad to admit. My own mother is 65 and i taught her how to use whatsapp, which i communicate with her everyday. Everyday! Mid next year i intend to install wifi in her house to stop her using expensive bundles. Her rural farm is near a major town so its no biggie. My 62 year old mother in law communicates to me via whatsapp as well and i have been on the end of a losing battle with her other children and grandchildren for her not to open a facebook account which she duly did just last month. So far she has 164 friends and counting. Bros, internet is real in kenya so stop using the false premise that being a rural dweller excludes one from the internet.

Ps: It has been shown in this thread that there are more bank branches per 1,000 pop in Kenya than in Nigeria. Search for that mini convo. Nigeria has large banks and that's it. They don't seem to be able to bank the less affluent, something kenyan banks have excelled in. Mpesa is a payment platform more than a money sending service nowadays, some people i know never carry cash, just their boring mobiles.
Ok i have heard you.

Just that what you are saying is not limited to Kenya alone.
My grandfather is almost 80 and he uses the internet too on his android phone, not to talk of my parents in their 50's who are now even more active than me on facebook and whatsapp and always ask me why i am not active there (that's because i spend more time on Nairaland and Quora, as i like to engage in political discussions more)

Okay why is it that Kenya gives other African countries (even like SA, Tunisia, Cape verde e.t.c who are very developed) a very wide margin in your source? This is not about Nigeria again now.

I juxtaposed your source and mine and i discovered that there was no wide discrepancy in the figures of other African countries except for Kenya?? Why should it have been only Kenya?
If you are using the time frame as a criteria to judge my source as being outdated, so are you now trying to tell me that within the space of 2 years, internet access in Kenya grew by 25%? For real? What about countries like SA, Tunisia and others? They did not grow too? Why only Kenya with the huge discrepancy?

Bros, abeg u check am na, e get as e be na.

you've made a point .. but then you can use quantitative/statistics to hide facts or the realities on the ground. Ghana is about 1/4 the size of Nigeria in landmass .. just as you have 36 states, Ghana has 10 administrative regions. what i've realised is Nigerians hide behind the huge numbers they churn out (due to their huge population) to distort facts when you engage them in any discourse. same way their leaders use those figures to deceive the populace. Just imagine a leader say the whole of water used in Ghana will not be enough to flush WCs in Lagos alone. meanwhile majority of the people living in Lagos needs electricity to draw water from the ground. Pumping water from the ground is not the norm in Ghana just as i don't know how to operate a generator. if you want an informed discussion you will get one. but if you want to belittle other countries or demonstrate ignorance .. i'll gladly defend my country, Ghana. wink
Hahahaha, the 'all the water in Ghana used in flushing Lagos toilet' part got me cracking hard grin
Don't blame Nigerians. We know the pains we suffer in trying to build a big country.

Do you know that many Nigerians are born, grow up and die, and out of the 36 states in the country, they might have been to only 10? Gradually, Nigerian states will be like countries of their own.

Our population is too much. Nigeria was never meant to be one country, the british were the ones who did some abracadabra and made us one.
Imagine that at independence, Nigeria has about 50 million people (more than present day Ghana and equal to present day Kenya).
The British left us at independence with 45 million illiterates out of 50 million people (10% literacy), and a lot of ethnic and regional rivalries. We had to rule and manage ourselves thus far.
So, it's not been easy for us at all.

Congo has a far larger and richer landmass with the richest rescources in Africa and just about half of Nigeria's population yet they are like a failed nation, fighting endless wars. Sudan with their large population too had to divide through war and see where they are today? What about Ethiopia?
A large and multi ethnic and multi religious country has never favoured the Black man, but Nigeria seems to be defying that spiritual force day by day and is still forging ahead.
Now, tell me, if you were a Nigerian how would you feel?

Every African nation has it's share of poor people. What I find hard to understand is why most people here find it hard to reason in line with what my fellow compatriots have been trying to explain for a long time now, which still looks like a vain mission.

This is mostly from the Ghanaians here, why do they so much hate Nigerians and type with so much hate?? I should be scared to visit that country with what am seeing here, who knows I may be lynched on knowing am a Nigerian. I just want to clear the air on this issue to avoid further arguments.

Nigerians aren't poor or even near to what you may regard a pauper, which is obtainable in many African nations I don't want to mention. Nigeria has the highest population of average people who work hard daily to make ends meet, you can't regard these people as poor unless your definition of poverty is different from mine, many of these struggling people feed and still manage to at least send their wards to a Federal University which are plenty here.

What inflates the number of poor people here is the North East. This region has had countless of attacks owing to the insurgence and Boko Haram attacks which many of you already know. Again this region was lagging behind their southern counterparts before all these owing to their religious affinity which already made them not open to development, the North has commercial cities like Kano, Kaduna, Maidugri (war ravaged) and many more which are buzzing in business, but most of these people would rather resort to begging and over dependence on Govt then live in abject poverty instead of going out to work, am not generalizing cos they still got many potentials and hardworking people. Adding to these, their polygamous nature also keeps increasing the population.

Another one is the immigration factor, most people from war ravaged and poor Countries like Chad, Niger due to starvation and search for greener pastures emigrate to Nigeria, because they all have a border in the North, so these all add up to rate of poverty in the North and Nigeria at large since they are also included as Nigerians because you can hardly differentiate them from our core Northerners here owing to their similar culture and religion.

My point is, An average Nigerian is not poor, The insurgence, population factor is what is making it look so when you take the average. An average Nigerian is enlightened and has access to the internet.

I tried to be objective as I can, and this is the reality or near-realtity of what is on ground here...
Many Ghanaians and other Africans from other smaller countries are just very bitter souls. Many of them are very angry that they belong to smaller and uninfluencial countries, so when they see large nations like Nigeria making progress and still dominating the cultural sphere of the region, they switch to attack mode.

These bitter souls do not know the pains and sacrifice the average Nigerian pays to maintain the oneness of a huge country like Nigeria.

They devote their time to try to rubbish and make fun of Nigeria in order to massage their little egos and at least feel better about themselves and their little development.

They forget that a baby Elephant and a baby Zebra may be born about the same size, but as they grow older the difference becomes clearer and the Elephant takes it rightful place.

Aside North-east and North-west Nigeria that is really dragging Nigeria backwards, Nigeria would have been leading Africa in most of the human indexes.
However, gradually, this gap is closing up and in few decades from now, these regions will catch up with the south.
North-central region used to be very backwards too like North-east and North-west, but North-centrals are rapidly catching up with the south and in less than 10 years from now, they will equal the south in almost all Human indexes and development.

Bros .. if fortunately for you, you happen to be among the rich in your country .. it's an opportunity to make an impact in people's lives .. there is no point in going for events and showering money on people to display your affluence .. that to me is poverty of the mind (the worst form of poverty you'll find); you won't find people do that in any civilised society.

i want to see african states work towards ensuring universal access to basic social amenities such as universal access to education, universal access to power, a functioning health insurance for every citizen, secure and safe communities. this is what you find in civilised and developed countries. opportunity is there for individuals to make money but the vulnerable are also protected through various social intervention programs.
And who told you that the average Nigerian does not have access to these things?

We have 774 LGAs in Nigeria and each of these areas have primary and secondary schs, health centres, roads, a local govt administrative centre and headquarters for closeness of governance to the people. We have all these things and are still doing our best to develop them. But because of our large and increasing population, we would still have a disadvantage in this aspect.

Have you been to all Nigerian states and local govt areas to assess the quality of all these amenities? NO! You mostly rely on online index figures which always rank Nigeria probably lower than your country, so this makes you conclude that we have no health care, schools, e.t.c......pls, is this not the height of stupidity??

The fact that Cape verde has a higher HDI than Ghana, should that be enough reason for them to tell Ghanaians that the average Ghanaian has no access to health care or education?

The problem with Ghanaians and Kenyans is that they think Nigeria functions like their smaller countries.

Nigeria is developing like the United states with different states developing their own economies and competing with each other.

Ghana as a smaller country will gather all their available money to build one hospital in Accra and be bragging day and night about it, WHILE different Nigerian states on the other hand will be building their own different hospitals in their different states and at the end of the day Ghana will have only 1 in Accra, while Nigeria will have over 1 dozen in different states.

Yes we are poor, yet we have the richest industries in Black africa.
Anyone can be a millionaire in Nigeria overnight due to the large pool and channel of wealth flowing in Nigeria.

Ghana is more developed yet only 23% of their citizens have ever known what it looks like to operate an internet enabled phone or a computer. What a shame and embarrasment!

yes I get your point, something really needs to be done about this, out of every 10 urhobo youth 2 can speak very well, 2 can only hear , the remaining six na OYO.

I think nothing can be done about this, if you have suggestions on how to tackle this issue free free to drop it.
The thing is that neither the federal nor state govts promote minority languages. So, many minority languages are heavily threatened. Even many igbos complain thag Igbo language as large as it is, it is threatened.

The only reason why Urhobo seems quite worse is because this threat has infiltrated urhobo homeland while other ethnic group languages are only threatened because their people migrate away from their homeland to bigger cities and cannot pass the language to their children.

Minority groups hardly have an option. Even Bini which used to be spoken all over Benin in the past is now gradually declining and most middle class Bini children and youths in Benin cannot speak the language well (although Bini is still better than Urhobo).

In the north, minority languages are vanishing and being replaced by Hausa.

I can confirm too. I was born and bred in Uvwie LGA. That language will be extinct in the next generation.

The problem bedevilling urhobo language i think is mostly urbanization and Warri (a very multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan centre) playing a greater role as the capital or heart of Urhobo population.
