Though it wasn't stated in the piece written by the op, I am not sure she even went to university and even got married. But she could sponsor a wedding ceremony for a grown up man. She sponsor her siblings to school (not saying it was wrong) but she gave what she could not give to herself. Or maybe she thought she did not deserve the good life as well.
