The background to this story as reported by Fabrizio Romano is as follows:

- Messi rejected PSG's offer for extension about a month ago.

- Messi is the biggest brand ambassador in Saudi Arabia. He has previously postponed his trip to SA two times on account of PSG's directive

- After last weekend's match, the players were given 2 - 3 days off. Messi used this opportunity to travel but still notified PSG of his intention before travelling despite having up to 3 free days

- While Messi was already on the flight on Monday, PSG changed their initial communication and asked players to report for training same day

- Obviously Messi could not return immediately while already en route SA and they subsequently issued a suspension.

The reality is that PSG felt belittled by Messi's rejection and are now getting back at him with this smear campaign. The fans feel Messi used them to prepare for the World cup which he won.
