There are lots of Nigerian setup groups and associations helping each other for free. I am a part of these groups. One is called NIPCA, check out website and LinkedIn. They have helped a lot of Nigerians get training in IT related areas like Salesforece, servicenow certificates and partnered with tech companies to help members secure jobs. We run trainings and help each other out with projects and challenges in workplace. Another WhatsApp group, GTAgroup, very helpful for people who just landed in ontario. Nigerians are more cooperative than you give credit for. This group on nairaland started with people's journeys and experience shared freely and we have all benefited.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/submit-profile/rounds-invitations.html new changes, you can get additional 50 points for strong French language skills. Guys do private lessons if you have to. It took me a couple of months to get to intermediate level and writing TEF boosted our scores. Even getting jobs here. The knowledge is an added advantage, if you live outside of Quebec. No one expects you to be fluent.

It is most likely ready but call their helpline on 08150199900 and follow the voice prompt to speak with an agent to be sure your passport is ready for pick up. You'll be asked for your tracking number. When did you submit your passport btw?
Thanks. The mail meant it was ready. Just FYI for others

I have also paid for him and submitted all other documents. He was added to my application in march but no placeholder to upload anything for him

Hi Soja84, does Ethiopian airways provide bassinet/cot for infants onboard?
soja84:
Dear All,we finally travelled on Friday(2nd of Feb) and landed on the 3rd(Saturday ) via Ethiopian Airlines.

I travelled with my family (Wife and Child ) and my friend with his wife and Child too. That makes us 2 families(2guys,2,wives and 2 boys!).The 2 boys will be 2years by May.

Flight was for 13.40pm(Nigerian Time),so we got there around 9.30.Started with excess luggages as 3 out of our 5 bags were above 23kg. They were actually between 24 and 25kg.We had to remove some stuffs to make the weight limit .My friend's 5 bags were all overweight so they had to buy one GMG bag and return one box which made the load reduce.
Overall, the guys at the counter were nice and assisted us in sorting ourselves out.We didn't have any foodstuff seized, infact we were not asked at Lagos Airport. Please go there with 500naira notes for 'Happy New Year' and I'm sure you'll be fine.

In-flight entertainment was ok.Food wasn't bad too but most of us couldn't eat it. However, that wasn't due to bad quality. In all,the Hostesses were very nice as our boys were so handful and were practically screaming and disturbing everyone due to plenty energy!Once one is asleep and quiet, the other would start his own drama. But the hostesses were nice and understanding.Apart from the food that we couldnt really eat,we had a good time with every other thing. The plenty extras, snacks, wine, beer etc especially if you're a fan sha, lol.Intact,we got tired of it!

We got to Addis Ababa around 7pm (Nigerian Time,9pm Addis Ababa) time. They didn't ask for our foodstuffs or anything, just normal checking in of hand luggages.Spent 2hours there and had to deal with another round of stress from the boys!

Boarded the plane to Toronto by 9pm,Nigerian Time (11 Addis Ababa time) and then the long journey began! We got to Dublin after about 8hours to refuel while some passengers disembarked. That was the 1st time,I started feeling the cold, just opening of the aircraft! We waited for one hour there. After the 1hour wait which felt like 3hours,we started another 7.25hrs journey to Toronto.

To be continued.....

Was abt 6 months gone during my medicals, so was quite obvious. Opted for xray with d lead jacket. My baby was born 3 weeks ago and he is very healthy. Hope this puts your mind at ease.
Elle78:
Dear Vcole, were you already pregnant prior to the medicals and how far long were you...sorry if the question is too personal. I've heard that when you do X-ray with the protective lead jacket, it's still not safe for someone in the first trimester. Don't know how true it is. Which of the hospitals did you use then. Thanks for the response.

What percentage of money transferred was bank charges? Did you also have to pay any transfer fees?
Is there any fixed charges or they are based on the amount being transferred? Thanks. Just trying to know how much it costs to move large sums of money from a gtb dom acct to a cad acct.
A555:

Changed USD into my Gtbank domiciliary account before i left. I travelled with USD$5k only because of the size of my family, honestly I don't even like travelling with that much money. On arrival, got my SIN next day, then proceeded to open bank accounts same day(I went with RBC). Requested a USD account as well as the CAD accounts, then I transferred from my Nigerian dom account to the USD account. Cash was credited into my account within 24hrs. When you consider the time difference it could be up to 48hrs if you miss the window to initiate the transfer in Nigerian time. I had to be careful to initiate the transfer before the GTbank closed their fx transactions for the day or it gets carried over to the next day and extends by a further day or so. And you can move between your CAD and USD accounts as easily as moving cash between your current and savings accounts in Nigeria.

Air Maroc isn't that bad after all. The only complaint is the long hours one has to stay at the Casablanca airport before departure. But we tried to make use of the kids playground at the airport. My children had something to distract them for hours.

We left our home at 11pm on the 25th December because we didn't want to take the risk of going to the airport at 2am. At 2:30 am, check in commenced and we had 10 luggage checked in..

We moved over to the lounge to wait for boarding. Caught some sleep and at 5am/5.30am, boarding started. I have 3 super active 2 year old. It was their 1st time flying as toddlers. They cried and wailed for about 3 hours to Casablanca. They couldn't be pacified. We did everything except spanking. Maybe , we should have. It was not a good experience. As babies, on our way from the US via Delta Airline, they were the most behaved babies. In fact, the flying crew gave them presents. They didn't cry at all. They simply ate and slept. But with Air Maroc, they gave my husband and I , the disgrace of our life. The crew even had the audacity to tell us to start training them well. Kai! I have suffered!

Before we left for Canada, I took them one by one to the Toilets and gave them stern warning. If they disgrace us one more time, they will certainly have it hot with me. I was done with the cries and wails. As if they listened, our 7 and half hours flight to Montreal was lit. They were well behaved. They watched some animated movies and probably, if we had that in the Lagos to Casablanca flight, they would have been calm. They ate, drank , watched movies, coloured their animated booklet and the flight was a smooth one. Phewww!

At the point of entry, we used the electronic machine to sign in and then moved to the Officer for us to be stamped in. Then , as soon as I brought out my children's Blue passports, one overzealous officer began to question how I got them! Can you imagine? Was I living in the US? How come I gave birth there with a visiting Visa? In all, I was calm because I didn't sneak into the US to use their Health Facilities. I told her I was carrying triplets and wanted the best medical care I could get. I had a visiting visa then. She interrupted me: "So, you decided to use it to give birth as of I was just visiting the US!" I said No! Before I became pregnant, I have traveled so many times to the US. When pregnancy came, I wrote the Embassy informing them of my intention to use the visa for delivery and they replied that I could go ahead and make sure I paid my bills which I did. Would that be an offense? She then kept quiet! She stamped us in and then directed us to where I would get my study permit.

While I was on the queue at Immigration point 2, an officer asked to see our passports. I gave her. She asked if the children are leaving Canada within 6 months, I said No. They are staying with me all through my studies. She sent us back to Immigration point 1 to collect another form. They should have given us the form over there. I went back but this time around, a male officer attended to us. He was the opposite of the female officer who initially attended to us. He was kind and took his time to prepare the documents for the kids. They were given study permits too that would last as long as mine. I was so much in a hurry to get our luggage that I forgot to get my Social security number or something like that. Will be getting it today or tomorrow.

At the baggage claim, we saw 9 out of our 10 luggage. We went to loge a complain but Air Maroc stand was empty. We were asked to call their number. We then moved to catch our Airport shuttle to Sherbrooke. It was about 2 and half hours journey from Montréal. It's a beautiful and calm town. Our shuttle took us to the Hotel where we are still at waiting to rent an apartment. Would be seeing one today and most likely going to rent it. A 2 bedroom fully furnished with everything from Internet to TV to everything. We just take our luggage and ourselves in. Then , we can move in comfortably.

I also opened an account yesterday with RBC which was recommended by one of the receptionists at the hotel. They don't charge on student's account. So, I'm cool with that. I also went to the Mall to buy a Sim card. Settled with Fido because they were the only company willing to give me a Sim without my social security number . They used my Study permit Code , International Passport and Student Visa.

For the missing luggage, ( it was the suitcase that contains our local food, my Garri, semo, ogbono, crayfish, powder pap, etc . All the flours and blended food stuffs were kept their to avoid rupture. It is an echolac suitcase) I called the number I got from the airport, was advised to go to their Facebook page to send my complaint. Which I did and an administrator took it up. I got a message from him last night asking me.to go to the airport and pick up my luggage. It was found and kept for me.

For missing luggage, I have had a missing luggage issue with Delta, Air France and KLM and I didn't go about thrashing them on social media. Those suitcases were eventually found and I picked them up at Lagos Airport. There's nothing wrong with Air Maroc, people just like to follow crowd and lose objectivity! Their food from Casablanca to Montreal was good too. My children enjoyed it (Fish and vegetable). The crew was nice too but can't say so with the Lagos to Casablanca crew. They were not so nice maybe they were irritated by my children's behavior but they are 2 year olds for crying out loud. One even said something nasty in French, not knowing I speak French..I told her never to repeat that in her life! She was shocked. Aside that, anyone who wishes to fly them, can go ahead. If I don't use them again, it would be because of the long wait not because of their services.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Please is marketing a regulated profession? Do you see a lot of brand / marketing manager roles? We actually have family in Edmonton but we were tending towards ontario because we see more of those jobs over there.
freeradical:
Edmonton is good now. The ice that piled after heavy snowfall in october and november has melted away though we are expecting a second wave anytime soon. There are many opportunities here as we see job adverts every now and then. I am still discovering the city itself.

I stay close to Century Park and we are looking forward to meeting you guys when u eventually arrive

Ok dear. Thank a lot. Baby never arrive, due any moment from now though. Am just trying to be super proactive. Please could you share timelines from birth of baby till getting the required docs, passport etc.
tollu:

My application is with London VO. I raised a CSE and also sent them an email then they requested for some documents which I provided.

If you haven't, please get your baby's birth certificate, international passport, passport photo. You will need to provide those.

I saw a message where someone got an ADR for an explanation on why she didn't inform them of the birth of her baby in good time. So you might want to do this asap.

Did CIC inform you when your profile went on"hold"? Or d application will be stuck until one raises a cse for the new baby.

Big big congratulations deeore! All is well that ends well.

Amen ooo. Thanks dear sis. I hardly even check this thread these days because hope don too dey long.

I intend picking ur brains. Thanks in advance.
staronthemoon:

I am currently living in Ottawa. It is a great place to live especially for families. Average wages are higher than in other cities and housing is more affordable than Toronto and Vancouver. There are a lot job opportunities in Ottawa, specifically in the government and technology sector. The only disadvantaged to Ottawa for Nigerians is French. Many jobs in Ottawa require being able to speak both French and English, especially in the public sector. If you are bilingual and have a post-secondary degree, you will easily be able to find a well-paying job. If you can't speak French, finding a job is a lot more difficult but still possible especially if you are skilled in engineering/programming.

Kudos to all the work you all are doing here. Except for very peculiar issues, can we all agree to keep this thread simple by encouraging newbies to read up and refer them to previous links. Anyone who has decided to relocate to a new continent and leave his/her life her behind needs to learn to research, read a lot and strategize. I do not mean to offend anyone but I think we ll be more productive this way. Thanks fam.quote author=40manlappy post=62945314]

Well dey took some blood sample so am guessing yes for HIV n other stds. No tuberculosis check and no yellow fever immunization. For some reason they refused to tell us what they were testing for.
TEECANN:

Good day @Nwandy & all

I used children's practice in ikoyi. They gave me a protective shield to wear. If you are in Lagos, u can use them.

Hello, My wife has a similar issue and it has really left me worried. I searched online for people who had similar issues and how they managed it. I learnt conducting medical tests for a pregnant woman should actually be her choice to make, considering the risk that comes with exposure to x-rays. Its generally said that a protective shield can be worn for a pregnant woman to protect the baby while the test is carried out. However, most medics would vehemently refuse to carry out an x-ray for a pregnant woman.

The question is :

1. Would the hospital where you would take the x-ray have the "protective shield" to protect your baby?
2. Would the medic be willing to carry out the test even when you oblige to taking the test considering the inherent risk?

You can visit the link below and see if it can be of help in any way.
