The Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in the Diaspora (AESID) has expressed worries over the rising debt profile of Ebonyi state, urging the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to stop the fresh loan request by the state government.

The group also faulted the plan by the state government to spend about N600 million on the forthcoming 7th year anniversary of Governor Dave Umahi-led administration in the state.

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly had recently approved another loan request from the Governor of Ebonyi State, allegedly put at N10 billion “for the purposes of completion of numerous ongoing infrastructural projects in the state.”

But reacting to the development through a statement signed Wednesday in Abuja, AESID’s President Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, his organisation will take every necessary legal and remedial steps towards ensuring that the state government does not further take the indigenes for granted.

“We at AESID urges the EFCC and good spirited Nigerians to please wade in to halt these deliberate and calculated stealing of our lean resources by a government that has made hunger and starvation of the masses it’s official policy.

“AESID will take every necessary legal and remedial steps towards ensuring that the Umahi government does not further take the indigenes for granted by wasting the said plum sum when most families in Ebonyi cannot afford even a square meal due to the excruciatingly biting anthropogenic poverty and hardship foisted on it by the Umahi administration.”

The group queried the powers of the 16 state House Assembly members loyal to the governor having been sacked by an Abuja Federal High Court for defecting to the All Progressives Congress with the Governor in November 2020.

According to the statement, records from the Debt Management Office showed that as at December 2021, the official sub- national domestic debt profile of Ebonyi state stood at over N42 Billion.

“We are also aware of undisputed claims in certain quarters that Ebonyi State government under Umahi has unofficially been making borrowings from some commercial banks in the State without due process or even recourse to the lackeys in the State’s House of Assembly. Our foreign debt profile have also skyrocketed to a whooping about $64M US Dollars. This does not include the borrowing of $150M from the Islamic Bank for the State’s ring road project.


“For a government that inherited a near zero debt burden from his predecessor and has habitually been wasting public funds on non-economically viable or sensible projects, this latest desperation to make our poor Ebonyi a debt stock of the nation is highly condemnable and most unfortunate.

“We can conveniently bet that Umahi has in the course of his deceptive ego-driven, white elephant projects borrowed and lavished what the next government in the State could have borrowed for the next eight years. It is even most disturbing that such humongous borrowings does not translate to the establishment of even a sachet water factory that can generate a Kobo to the coffers our economically strangulated Ebonyi State.

“As though the unconscionable squandering of public funds on frivolities is not already enough, AESID read in the media very recently about plans by the Umahi administration to spend N600M of tax-payers money to celebrate it’s Seventh anniversary in office. For a government which took Ebonyi’s poverty index from about 64 percent to a whooping nearly 80% with the state now officially the poverty capital of the entire Southern Nigeria, Umahi should be ashamed of celebrating the near total debt extinction of the State’s economic life and prosperity.”

On the recent victory of a victim of the Cybercrime law of the State which was recently declared illegal by a Federal High Court in Abakaliki, the statement commended the judiciary for the bold decision of declaring the state law as “anti the spirits and letters of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nigeria set to become destination for medical tourism, reverse brain drain – Minister

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that with the establishment of world class healthcare facilities in Nigeria, the country is set to become a destination for medical tourism, in addition to reversing the brain drain in the health sector.

The Minister, who spoke after a media tour of Duchess International Hospital in Lagos on Tuesday, said the world class healthcare facilities springing up in Nigeria will also curb medical tourism abroad, conserve foreign reserves and create jobs.

“Today, we are here at the Duchess International Hospital. During the guided tour, I am sure you all saw that this is indeed a purpose-built, state-of-the-art, 100-bed hospital, which is aimed at delivering the highest standard of healthcare, using the most advanced technology and treatments to provide Nigerians with the best medical expertise available anywhere in the world,” he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said that according to available records, Nigerians spend between $1.2 billion and $1.6 billion on medical tourism annually, a development he described as a huge drain on the country’s foreign reserves.

He expressed delight that many of the doctors at Duchess International Hospital, a subsidiary of Reddington Hospital, are Nigerians who had
trained and worked abroad, but who have now decided to return home because of the availability of healthcare facilities with standard equipment and a good work environment.

The Minister said the Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bank of Industry, provided financial support for Duchess International Hospital, as part of its intervention in the health sector.

”This is not new. Recall that in the wake of Covid-19, the CBN set up the N100 billion Healthcare Sector Intervention Fund, now expanded to
N200 billion, to provide credit support for the healthcare sector through long-term, low-cost financing,” he said, listing other interventions by the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), as including a total of $22.5million which was spent in establishing two diagnostic centres in Kano and Umuahia ($5.5 million each) and the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre in Lagos ($11.5 million)

“The essence of these financial interventions and projects in the critical healthcare sector is to fast-track the evolvement of world
class healthcare facilities like the Duchess International Hospital.

With that, we can conserve our foreign reserves, earn foreign exchange for the country, create jobs, reverse brain drain, become a destination for medical tourists and also ensure affordable and standard healthcare for Nigerians,” he said.

Alhaji Mohammed commended the management of the hospital for making their world class services affordable and accessible to ordinary Nigerians, particularly with the launching of the ‘World Class.

Affordable Healthcare Programme that coincided with the visit of the Minister and the over 30 journalists who accompanied him on the tour.

“With what we have seen here today and the programme that has just been launched, Nigerians can now get access to affordable and world class treatment in whatever is ailing them in many areas, including emergency medicine, women’s health, paediatric care, cardiovascular
medicine, kidney dialysis, dental treatment, eye care, etc,” he said.

The Minister said the visit to the hospital was in continuation of the media tour of the development projects of the Buhari Administration,disclosing that in the past 40 days, he had taken the media on a tour of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Project as well as the Dangote Fertilizer Company in Lagos; the Lekki Deep Seaport and the Duchess Hospital, in addition to the tour of road, rail, bridge and other projects across the country.

”The essence of these tours is to showcase what this Administration has achieved in the various sectors. Even where the project is private-sector driven, the Federal Government has either provided the enabling environment or, in some cases, supported such projects with funding,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr.Tokunbo Shitta-Bey, who conducted the Minister round the hospital,
said the multi-specialist hospital, which is already attracting foreigners coming for treatment, is poised to make its advanced
elite service affordable and accessible to Nigerians, who would pay only N5,000 for registration and 5,000 for consultation.

He said the hospital, which was commissioned 22 Oct. 2021 by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is committed to immediate and open access to emergency and critical care services, as well as a wide range of specialist-led services and treatment.

The Minister and his team were conducted round the various departments of the hospital, including the Cardiology Centre, Eye care clinic, Learning and Development Centre, ENT Department, Surgical and Gynecology Ward, Fully-automated lab, Intensive and Critical care unit, Endoscopy unit, Women and Children Ward, Dialysis Centre, Dental Unit, Pharmacy, Surgical Theatre (Modular and automated), Radiology Department and Emergency Room.

The new Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) will be unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 18, 2022.

The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Malam Mele Kyari, made this known on Tuesday while receiving the CEO of the Year 2021 Award of the Leadership Newspapers Group in Abuja.

The Leadership Annual Conference and Awards also saw Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, receive the Leadership Person of the Year Awards.

Speaking virtually from Luanda, Uganda where he is attending the African Petroleum Conference (CAPDE VIII), Kyari expressed “profound appreciation” toward the award.

He thanked the Leadership Newspapers Group for recognising the efforts of the NNPC, adding that such a gesture was a challenge to do more.

THEWILL reports that the new Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, restructured and empowered the NNPC as a new entity.

Gunmen have kidnapped the lawmaker representing Aguata 2 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Okechukwu Okoye.

The lawmaker who represents Governor Charles Soludo’s hometown was whisked away by his abductors on Sunday in the Isuofia area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack to Channels Television on Monday via a phone conversation.

He said the Anambra State Police Command had launched a manhunt for the kidnappers to rescue the lawmaker.

Although the details of the abduction are still sketchy, a viral video show the lawmaker’s vehicle stuck inside a drainage system in the area where the incident occurred.

The latest attack is coming a few days after the state governor, Professor Charles Soludo visited the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.

Soludo, who shared pictures of himself and Kanu via social media on Saturday night, said the IPOB leader condemned the violence and senseless killings going on in the Southeast and wished he had the opportunity to a broadcast to address the situation.
