Security Operatives Arrest 30 Suspected Kidnappers In Imo And Anambra, Rescue Traditional Ruler

Some 30 suspected kidnappers and criminals have been arrested in Imo state, Channels Television can report.

The criminals were arrested during a Monday raid, by a joint security team, on camps in Orsu local government and Uli community in Ihiala local government area of Anambra state.

A traditional ruler who was kidnapped in Okigwe local government area on Sunday, Acho Ndukwe of Ihube autonomous community, was also released during the raid.

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the other kidnapped traditional ruler of Ihitte Ihube autonomous community, Paul Ogbu, have not been made known.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the palaces at about 12am on Sunday, abducted both monarchs, and set their palaces ablaze.

The incident happened 48 hours after a traditional ruler in Atta autonomous community in Njaba local government area, also of Imo State, was abducted and murdered.

The traditional ruler of Mbutu community who was kidnapped last week was rescued by the police unhurt on Saturday.

Kidnapping is rife in parts of Imo State and the South-East.

Authorities have blamed the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) members for much of the violent crimes in the region.

PoliticsB.lack Axe - Leaked Documents Shine Spotlight On Secretive Nigerian Gang (APC) by NwaNimo1(op): 1:45am On Dec 13, 2021
A violent mafia-style gang in Nigeria linked to murder and fraud has infiltrated the country's political system and launched a global scamming operation well beyond Nigeria's borders, according to thousands of hacked documents and testimonies seen by the BBC.

The '' gang has been operating for decades in Nigeria and is among the country's most-feared organised crime syndicates. Membership of these syndicates, known as "cults" or "fraternities", is outlawed in Nigeria.

For the past two years, BBC Africa Eye has been following the , speaking to former members and combing through thousands of leaked documents that appear to have been hacked from a number of prominent members of the group. It was not possible to verify the entire cache of hacked files, but key documents were verified by the BBC.

Among our findings were emails that suggest a prominent Nigerian businessman and 2019 APC Party candidate for political office, Augustus Bemigho, was a senior member of and was involved in orchestrating fraudulent internet scams netting millions of dollars. shocked

The cache of documents contained more than 18,000 pages from an email account linked Mr Bemigho, including emails that suggest he sent guidance on scamming to a network of collaborators on 62 occasions and communicated with others about specific scamming targets.

"We have removed him close to 1M dollar," says one email sent to Mr Bemigho, referring to a victim. The email contains the victim's full name, email address and number, and instructions on how to progress the scam.

Read the full investigation: The ultra-violent cult that became a global mafia

The BBC tracked down two apparent scamming victims from Mr Bemigho's emails, who say they were defrauded of approximately $3.3m (£2.4m). Operations by international law enforcement agencies indicate that 's scamming profits may run into the billions. The BBC contacted Mr Bemigho but he did not respond to the allegations.

Some of the material in the leaked documents - showing the graphic results of the gang's activities - is too horrifying to publish. But the data paints a unique portrait of the operations between 2009 and 2019, and suggests the gang has penetrated Nigerian politics in its home region of Edo State to a shocking extent.

Two documents state that in Benin City, 35 million naira (more than £64,000) was funnelled to the Neo-Black Movement of Africa (NBM) - a registered company in Nigeria considered by some western law enforcement to be synonymous with - to "protect votes" and secure victory in a governorship election in 2012.

In exchange for the support, the files suggest that "80 slots [were] allocated to NBM Benin Zone for immediate employment by the state government".

Kurtis Ogebebor, an activist in Benin City who works to try and stop young people being recruited into cults like , told the BBC that Nigeria's politics had become a "mafia politics".

"Cultism seems to be at all levels of our government, from the lowest to the highest," he added. "You find them everywhere."

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/5A55/production/_122052132_41927474_1970120429721994_5064507121979097088_n.jpg

The of Africa strongly denies links to the , and the group's lawyers told the BBC that any members found among its ranks were "expelled immediately". The NBM claims to have three million members around the world, and regularly publicises charitable activity - donations to orphanages, schools and the police, both in Nigeria and abroad.

"NBM is not . NBM has nothing to do with criminality," Ese Kakor, the president of the organisation, told the BBC.

But international law enforcement agencies have taken a different view. The US justice department has labelled the NBM a "criminal organisation" and says it is "part of the ", and Canadian authorities have said that the and NBM "are the same".

In recent months, joint operations targeting by the US Secret Service, the FBI and Interpol resulted in the arrest of more than 35 NBM members in the US and South Africa on charges related to multi-million dollar internet fraud schemes. The NBM told the BBC all these members have since been suspended.

In 2017, Canadian authorities broke up a money-laundering scheme linked to worth in excess of $5bn - hinting at the scale of the gang's global financial operations. Nobody knows how many similar schemes are out there, the leaked documents show members communicating between Lagos, London, Tokyo, Dubai, and a dozen other countries.

In Nigeria, the is better known for its street level crime and brutality and alleged links to politics and business. But the nature of the connections has long been murky and unsubstantiated.

A former member of the Edo State government, speaking to the international media for the first time, told the BBC membership is widespread within the halls of power.

"If you sat me down and say, can you identify in government, I will identify," said Tony Kabaka, who told the BBC he had survived repeated assassination attempts since leaving governmnet and whose house and front gate are littered with bullet holes.

"Most politicians, almost everybody is involved," he said.

We sent the government of Edo State the allegations that they have ties to the , but they did not respond.

PoliticsCOVID-19 Infections Rise By 326.67% In One Week, Nigerians Shun Safety Rules by NwaNimo1(op): 1:36am On Dec 13, 2021
COVID-19 cases are on the increase raising fears that the country is on the verge of the fourth wave of coronavirus, findings by The PUNCH have shown

Epidemiological data obtained on Sunday from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control showed that from November 28 to December 4, a total of 585 cases were reported.

But from December 5 to December 11, the cases took a new surge as 2,496 cases were reported, indicating an increase of 1,911 (326.67 per cent).

Amid rising COVID-19 cases, our correspondents on Sunday reported that Nigerians had abandoned adherence to coronavirus protocols such as use of face masks and hand washing.

In Lagos, it was observed that churches, mosques and other public places were no more enforcing the use of face masks

Also residents of Jos, the Plateau State capital, said there was no need for them to adhere to the protocols since the virus “has gone.”

In Zamfara State, visits to public places such as markets, mosques and churches on Sunday showed that the people had completely abandoned the COVID- 19 protocols.

Similarly, government officials have also stopped wearing face masks in both their offices and officials functions.

In Ogun state , many residents are no longer adhering strictly to the protocols.

In a related development, the NCDC showed that 22,863 coronavirus tests were conducted between November 29 and December 11 compared to 103,358 tests conducted between November 22 and November 28, signifying a 77.8 per cent drop in testing rate.

The NCDC data also indicated that 13 states including Kogi, Kebbi, Yobe, Cross river, Sokoto, Niger, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Ebonyi, Anambra, Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom had stopped COVID-19 tests.

Epidemiological data obtained from the NCDC revealed showed that since December 1, 2021 only about 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory had details of their reports with the NCDC.

But the Sokoto State Government faulted the inclusion of the states among states not carrying out tests for COVID-19.

The state Commissioner of Health, who is also as the state chairman, COVID-19 taskforce, Dr Ali Inname, said Sokoto must have been listed in error.

“We carry out COVID-19 tests on prospective corps members deployed to the state before, their entry into the NYSC Orientation camp.

“Our personnel are also, on ground and they administered the Covid-19 tests on the citizens that volunteered to be tested. This includes those that needs clearance to embark on travelling.”

Also the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Professor Isa Abdullahi, said the state was carrying out COVID-19 tests and the results were being sent to the NCDC

Commenting on the rising cases, a medical virologist at the Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Dr Oladipo Kolawole, said the country was not doing enough to fight the surging Omicron variant of COVID-19.

In an interview with one of our correspondent on Sunday, Kolawole said it was unfortunate that most Nigerians had neglected the non-pharmaceutical measures of COVID-19.

He said, “Nigeria is not doing enough to ward off the surging of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 because the populace is not taking this seriously. Most Nigerians are not keeping to the rules, they have neglected the non-pharmaceutical measures, no use of facemask, no physical or social distancing, more social gathering, no washing of hands with either soap or alcohol-based hand sanitiser, most of our local airports are always crowded.”

According to a renowned Virologist at the University of Maiduguri, Professor Marycelin Baba, the failure of states to engage in community testing and the recent surge could lead to a full outbreak if not properly curtailed.

Baba who spoke to one of our correspondents in Abuja also reiterated the fact that the change of weather could also lead to more cases.

She said, “First, failure to test and send updates will not help us to monitor the trends properly. This could mean that the figures we have far fetched than what we truly have and if this is not probably monitored, there could be a full outbreak. It is also too early to link this surge to the Omicron variant, the WHO has also said they are still monitoring the trends and investigating the variant but one thing is sure, cases are increasing.

“Another thing is that cold allows for surge in COVID-19 cases. In Europe, they get more cases during winter. While we are waiting for the WHO to conclude it’s investigations, it will be in the interest of all to make sure that tests are being done, public health protocols are adhered to and also continue with speedy vaccination.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee COVID-19, has cautioned Nigerians against letting down their guards because of the deadly nature of Omicron variant of COVID-19 .

He warned that Nigerians should not drop their guard as the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet with the discovery of more deadly Omicron variant.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday and is receiving treatment for mild symptoms, the presidency said in a statement.

https://www.channelstv.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Cyril_Ramaphosa.jpg

Ramaphosa, who is fully vaccinated, began feeling unwell after leaving a state memorial service for former deputy president F W de Klerk in Cape Town earlier in the day but was in good spirits and being monitored by doctors, it said.

He would remain in self-isolation in Cape Town for the time being and had delegated all responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza for the next week.

On a recent visit to four West African states, the president and the entire South African delegation were tested for Covid-19 in all countries, the statement said.

“The president and the delegation returned to South Africa from the Republic of Senegal on Wednesday, 8 December 2021, after obtaining negative test results.

“The president also tested negative on his return to Johannesburg on 8 December.”

The statement quoted Ramaphosa as saying that his own infection served as a warning to all citizens of the importance of getting vaccinated and remaining vigilant against exposure.

“Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation,” the statement said.

“People who have had contact with the president today are advised to watch for symptoms or to have themselves tested,” it added. grin

The highly mutated Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa last month and sparked global panic over fears that it is more contagious than other variants.

It has not yet become fully clear, however, if it causes more severe illness or if, or to what it extent, it can evade vaccines.
