COVID-19: Poor turnout at designated centers as Kano residents resist Astra Zeneca vaccine

Efforts to vaccinate residents of Kano against coronavirus has suffered a setback, as many residents hesitate to come forward.

Most centres designated for the inoculation of residents were deserted while medical personnel posted to such facilities also appeared to struggle with the process.

A team of journalists, who visited the coordinating vaccination centre at the Abdullahi Wase Hospital, to supervise the exercise, found the premises empty.

On inquiry, they were informed that the medical personnel had proceeded to the Kano Emir’s Palace to launch the Kano Municipal vaccination exercise.

However, on reaching the Emir’s Palace, the journalists only met a few medical officers who claimed they were going to another location to administer the vaccines.

All efforts to speak to the medical officers on the number of persons vaccinated so far and the general response by residents to the vaccine did not yield any result.

Our correspondent reports that another trip to Murtala Muhammed Hospital where Governor Ganduje received his AstraZeneca vaccine also had problems registering patients

They said, “we are having serious problems with Data procession because there is no network to allow people registered and the few ones we have vaccinated use their international passport before we vaccinated them”.

The medical officers said they commenced vaccination by 11.30 am but at 2pm, only ten persons had come forward to receive the vaccine.

Kano received 209,000 doses of the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine from the federal government.

All efforts to speak to the State Commissioner for Health Dr Ibrahim Aminu Tsanyawa failed as he refused to pick his calls
