Edmen: labour cannot tell me that they re just finding out about MTN and some other big firm that involve in turning Nigerians to slaves.. I worked with MTN for a while though it was outsourced but we had labour union leaders who were aware of the suffering that we were going through, but instead of finding a lasting solution to it, they would rather meet with the head of the company then reach an agreement that will only benefit their selfish interest..funny enough we paid monthly from our salary just to be part of the so called union.... MTN on its part were fully aware of our situation but nothing was done, instead they are focused only on giving your best at your own detriment..We were made to work extended hours without pay, workers were sacked at will..in fact once management feel that they re not breaking even, they start laying off staff without compensation..I saw hell working for that company... NLC has failed workers. |

gorociano: It is no longer news that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) invaded the premises of telecoms company, MTN, across Nigeria from Monday July 9, 2018, ostensibly to picket the company but ended up carrying out acts of violence against the staff of the company and vandalizing equipment. The labour union went to protest the casualisation and poor welfare of its members by the telecoms giant but instead left in its wake, blood, destruction and what some described as carnage.
Critical national infrastructure across the country were reportedly breached and attempts were made to compromise them like turning off the independent power plants at the Ojota switch station, Lagos. Infact, staff of MTN had to create a human shield around human resources executive, Esther Akinnukawe, for her to escape the head office of MTN as NLC members were trying to beat her up. Many members of staff were allegedly harassed and forced to sing along with NLC members who were recorded in various violent acts of vandalism.
Of course many right-thinking individuals have called out NLC’s act, including UK-based accountant and social commentator, Feyi Fawehinmi and veteran radio presenter, Jimi Disu with some calling the act by the NLC a fund-raising exercise.
How did the Nigerian Labour Congress descend so low to the point of being regarded as a collection of touts by Nigerians, a clear departure from the intellectual rigorousness and sagacity the Nigerian labour movement is well known for in the times past? What can the labour union do to conform to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) standard and rescue its battered brand?
1. NLC should ask itself why have Nigerians who previously jumped when NLC sneezed become apathetic to its cause? Why are people showing outrage at the violence meted out against MTN by NLC on various social media platforms? Why did their people have to resort to violence? Is MTN really guilty of casualisation, or it is the companies that they outsourced to that are guilty of such? Is there a better/more effective way of engagement that won’t generate so much bad blood? After these questions are asked, then they should go on to the next step.
2. Come up a strategy: Offense, defense or placatory. I would advice placatory in this case and a mixture of the two other options going forward. Imagine what a picture of NLC President and the CEO of MTN shaking hands at the MTN headquarters can do to show Nigerians that NLC is not anti-business but there was only miscommunication which they are addressing internally.
3. Open social media accounts that are RESPONSIVE and ENGAGING, in order to showcase the constructive works that the organisation is doing. I have not found any account on the social media platforms I use (Nairaland, Facebook, Twitter) that claims to be owned by NLC. Even if they have, how responsive and engaging are they? Let the PRO or President handle it directly so people can get direct access to decision-making structure of the congress.

Politics / Re: APC Backtracks, Defends SSS Siege On National Assembly by Nwaohafia1: 10:13am On Aug 08, 2018 |
erunz: The All Progressives Congress (APC) has exercised a U-turn in its position on the development at the National Assembly on Tuesday.
State Security Service (SSS) operatives were joined by police officers to prevent lawmakers from accessing the parliament for several hours on Tuesday morning.
Following widespread media attention and outrage from Nigerians, as well as attempts by furious lawmakers to break into the premises, the security agents ultimately allowed access to the National Assembly. But the access was only granted to serving lawmakers. All other members of staff at the National Assembly, as well as journalists and other independent observers were denied entry.
The siege lasted until late afternoon when SSS operatives stood down after receiving reports that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo did not authorise the deployment and had fired the director-general of the secret police, Lawal Daura, as a consequence.
The APC joined other individuals, groups and even foreign diplomatic missions to condemn the attack on Tuesday night.
The party described the security agencies’ action at the time as an “unfortunate invasion” and dissociated itself from “any act of brigandage and affront on the sacred symbols of our budding democracy.”
But this morning, another statement came in from the party, which essentially contradicted its position yesterday. The party said Mr Saraki was the one who orchestrated the plot, and that security agencies only moved in to prevent any outbreak of violence.
The APC statements, the first at 6:41 p.m. on Tuesday and the second at 8:02 a.m. on Wednesday are reproduced respectively as follows:
APC Condemns National Assembly Invasion
The All Progressives Congress (APC) condemns in strongest terms, today’s unfortunate invasion of the National Assembly by security forces. Our Party wholly dissociates itself from any act of brigandage and affront on the sacred symbols of our budding democracy.
Our Party remains a law abiding political organisation and advises every constituent part to abide by the tenets of our constitution and our democracy.
Whilst our contention with the leadership of the National Assembly as currently constituted is a matter of public record, we still believe that the legislature as an independent arm of government must be allowed free reign for vibrant contestation of ideas and values amongst its members within the context of their constitutional mandate and for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
We call for a more harmonious working relationship between the various Arms of Government in the general interest of the country.

How Security Operatives Stopped Saraki’s Plan to Foment Violence over Impeachment
Following Tuesday’s incident at the National Assembly, our investigations have now uncovered the sinister plot hatched by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki to foment violence in the legislative chamber all in a bid to stop his impeachment.
Our investigations uncovered and noted the following:
We are now aware that the timely intervention of the security operatives forestalled the planned violence which could have led to possible deaths, injuries and destruction of property in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Why did the Senate President mobilise thugs to the National Assembly who almost lynched Hon. E.J. Agbonayinma, the only APC federal lawmaker present but for the timely intervention of security operatives.
Why did the Senate President reconvene the National Assembly? Ostensibly as a pre-emptive move to frustrate federal lawmakers move to impeach him.
Is it not curious that only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) federal lawmakers were present in their numbers-some as early as 7am, while the majority APC federal lawmakers were elsewhere holding a caucus meeting on the state of the nation.
We call on security agencies and relevant bodies to as a matter of urgency probe these findings and take all necessary and legitimate action to stop these illegalities which pose a direct and ominous threat to our democracy.
As espoused in our earlier statement, whilst our contention with the leadership of the National Assembly as currently constituted is a matter of public record, we still believe that the legislature as an independent arm of government must be allowed free reign for vibrant contestation of ideas and values amongst its members within the context of their constitutional mandate and for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
Finally, we reiterate our call for the Senate President to resign from the position immediately as he no longer has the moral and legitimate ground to occupy that position as a member of the minority PDP. Going by the popular axiom, ‘the majority will have their way, but the minority will have their say’.

Lilisticlili: APC leader and former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was at the Redeemed Christian Church of God 66th Annual Convention of RCCG, today to felicitate with his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu who was ordained as an Assistant Pastor of the RCCG according to news reports.
See how your religious leaders are solidifying their power base? This isn't about the Nigerian people. This isn't about the "flock". This is about access to power and resources.
RCCG has been strategically positioning itself in the political space. The VP, his media spokesperson, and now Tinubu's wife all pastors at RCCG.
This isn't about "Christianity taking over and expanding influence" or whatever bullshit they're selling to you. This is about power hungry people who want access to the country's wealth to remain in their very small circle.
RCCG has been useful to the APC in the last election. Osinbajo brought in the Christian southwest vote and they used him to make Buhari appealing. They're doing it again with Remi Tinubu.
RCCG is an enterprise. One whoose leadership is obsessed with political and economic power.
Don't mind them. We won't be fooled this time. Same RCCG members put us in this mess we are suffering 5 Likes 2 Shares |
