Ojude Oba 2013 in pictures Ojude Oba literately means the kings's front-yard. It is an annual event when the citizens and well wishers of Ijebuland pay homage to their king (The Awujale of Ijebuland). Fixed on the 3rd day of Ileya festival because many Ijebu citizens (Muslims and Non Muslims) often travel home for the Ileya festivals...even though the event has become very popular and big that many now go home for Ileya because they don't want to miss Ojude Oba. Before now the event usually takes place in front of the King's palace and with many titled chiefs on horses giving lots of entertainment to spectators. Years after, the Awujale asked many of the Ijebus to form various social associations with approval from the Awujale's palace. That took Ojude Oba to a new level. We have thousands of like-minds associations in Ijebu today. So yearly each recognized association come to Ojude Oba to pay homage to the king with their Musics and dances. That is not all. The main thing is the parties after the Ojude Oba entertainments. Each Association has their party place where they eat and drink to their fill with their friends and families. Some of them engage live bands to play for them while they dance and party, others make use of DJs and party till dawn. The fun on this day is unlimited with unlimited food, drinks, music, money, and other things you find at big parties ![]() https://dvsl3w2q45hb8.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Ojude-Oba-20131.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_0665.jpg https://www.picturingnigeria.com/site/uploaded.media/ojude_oba_festival_2013_02_03_105424.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_08451.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_0632.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_0622.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_06591.jpg https://www.picturingnigeria.com/site/uploaded.media/ojude_oba_festival_2013_02_03_105855.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_0142.jpg https://www.picturingnigeria.com/site/uploaded.media/ojude_oba_festival_2013_02_03_110701.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_0933.jpg https://dvsl3w2q45hb8.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Ojude-Oba-2013.jpg https://www.oloriolawale.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DSC_08311.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzCAwIFdKO0 |

MetaPhysical: Please elaborate more on that. You will have to visit Ijebu ode to know more. Its been years I visited the place. And about the special mat...well its what they said and many believed it's true. whether na magic or something else, if you ask me na who I go ask? But Billions of people all over the world among whom are well educated people believe Jesus and Peter walked on the water, I think sailing on a mat is still 2nd class to that ![]() |
MetaPhysical: Kasumoto, MetaPhysical: It is known that Ijebu and Itsekiri share same dialect. Between these two locations are Mahin and Ilaje. Given the linearity in their geo-positions, it is hard not to appreciate that all four - Ijebu, Mahin, Ilaje and Itsekiri - speak same dialect.I lived part of my early life at Ijebu Ode, and there was this annual festival they used to have then (I dont know if they still do it) it was done in remembrance of one of the Ijebus' greatest herbalist, cant remember his name now (his family compound was just 3 buildings away from where I lived). According to what I heard then, there used to be a river that connected River Ogun to another river at Epe and the river passed through Ijebu Ode. Annually, the river overflew its bank and destroyed thousands of lives and properties and after consultations from many places; in other to appease the goddess of this river the herbalist had to sacrifice his life. I heard he sailed with a special mat on the river till he was out of sight and days following the big river dried up. I was shown a trace of the river-pathway which was a big gully at the time filled with refuse dumps. If this account is true, it might answer some of your questions. I know they celebrate Yemoja festival in Ijebu Ode back in the days too. |
