Health › Re: Lady Calls Out Igando General Hospital Doctor That Refused Treating Her Nephew by OBAGADAFFI:
Chartey:
Most patients I've had issues with are educated patients who have some knowledge about what they think they need. The problem is that some knowledge is a dangerous thing.

First of all, doctors are not service providers. This is why there's now a campaign in the US to stop calling healthcare professionals "providers". It reduces the relationship to a transactional one and makes the patient a customer who is always right.
The doctor-patient relationship is a multidimensional one which I won't go into the details of. Try to look it up online. Anything that compromises this will make the first goal of the relationship which is "Do no harm" difficult to achieve.
In the case of a child, I need good rapport with the caregiver to be able to get a useful history of the illness. When this is not available I won't get the complete picture of what is wrong with the child and I may treat in a way that may cause harm. In such a case, it is my right as a doctor to refuse treatment and refer to a colleague unless in a "life-threatening emergency" (which has definitions). Patients and their relatives have to know this for everyone's good.

Another thing people need to understand is that you don't come to the hospital when you're in a hurry to somewhere else. Coming to the hospital means that you believe the problem is more important than any other thing on your schedule and we understand that. However, we have to triage and attend to patients in order of seriousness of illness not on first-come first-served basis. So if your child has a fever but is still active and they bring another in who has been convulsing for 30 minutes, another one struggling to breathe and another unconscious, we'll attend to all of them before yours and you can wait or come back later if you wish. It's not our fault.

What people recognise (but are just selfish) is that we're seriously overworked and almost always operating beyond capacity. We may be in the hospital from Saturday morning to Monday afternoon then someone decides to come on that afternoon to harass a doctor that hasn't really slept for two days. I'll be too tired to even reply and I'll just ignore you to save my remaining energy for the journey home so as to rest enough for the next day's work. We've admitted 30+ patients frequently in a ward with 12 beds, more people were on the floor. This is us being compassionate but risky because if anything happens, we'd be asked by the court why we didn't send the others away. Now, a 31st patient may come and the relatives may cause a scene because we sent them away. Whose fault is this?

Finally, patients seem to think we're robots and have ready solutions for everything. They don't understand the highly cerebral nature of a consultation so they expect it to be quick especially those waiting outside. Now, I think this is our fault as we don't engage patients enough. So, personally I try to make patients know my thought process in arriving at their diagnosis and the knowledge and logic behind it. There's however little you can do when you have 80 patients waiting for you and you have to see all of them in about 6 hours.

When as a patient or relative you understand these issues, you'll know how to get the most benefit out of being in the hospital.
So if doctors aren't call "providers" . What do you suggest they should be called.

Every Profession got its hazard and we dont throw Ethic due to the Hazards.

Most engineers work off-site for days without support, in bad weather .

Will they complain - Yes

Should abandon their Job -NO

If Doctors can refuse to attend to patent, due to his/her attitude.

Then Bank CC and Telecoms CC can likewise do same .

Shut up Mr Man, only in Nigeria will someone make me loose my licence for no just cause. You think yankee na Banana republic wey person no go even show for Short Service training and hin go still hang pip?

Just shut up about everything and stick to your disgusting attitudes abeg.

Misdiagnosis is the 3rd leading cause of death in the whole world after Cancer & Heart disease. Your stupid self will only want to see the fault in every good thing people do. Na your type dey worship pastor but criticize doctors doing actual work of saving people's lives.

Whether you like it or not, I am doing you a favour if you come to a govt setting, because you're getting the best of service at a cheaper price, whether the government pays me or not!

Until the Government has no more doctors to recruit, that's when you'll realise just how stupid your arguement is.

So soldier wey dey die for Nigeria, is he not getting paid as well? They even collect allowance wey pass some people salary. Will you also say they aren't doing you a favor?

I'm a Representative of the Nigerian government by virtue of working in such an establishment and na favor I dey do you if you no know!

If you want favour again, go to private mushroom Hospitals and get help!
See the one talking about attitudes. grin grin grin grin

Your can't even construct a line of sentence without insults and you went through a University claiming to be a Doctor.

Stop lying you are not Doctor. grin grin grin grin grin

I'll rather YOU ask him if he's experiencing shitty and crazy patients like your type. You thinkboyinbo man will just come to Hospital and start behaving like a lunatic like you? Such patient will be seen as a Psychiatrist patient and tranquilized instantly. Oyinbo dey always respect themselves even when you come to their own country. Na your type go go south Africa go dey disgrace Nigeroans for there with una disgusting attitudes.

Go to YouTube and watch the videos of a Nigerians first month in Canada, he almost ran mad due to Oyinbo behavior of being too nice.

If them wan tell you to do something that's even their right, e go dey be like sey dem dey beg you to do am sef. And it's not actually begging, it's just their nature of being polite. You try not to do it and you'll see the way they'll deal with you.

But for una here, being crazy and rude is the normal way to start a conversation.

Crazy lots...
Tranquilized a patient?

Go and find out, Doctors loose their license to practice easily in that Oyinbo land, some Doctors even go to jail.

You thing it is Nigerian where NMA always ignore complaints against Doctors.

Well this show you are not a Doctor.

Go police station or barracks go insult their service providers now. I've shown videos of people getting slapped out of the bank. Stop using useless excuse to defend your story.

Na only rich people dey insult staff and get away with it so easily. We have stories of how 1st Bank treat their customers like shiit once dey see sey your account balance no gel.

Hospital is d only place you'll come in rags and you'll be treated well or you'll come in your Gucci suits and you'll be humbled.

It all depends on your attitude.
And this man claimed to be Doctor.

Do you how our service center and customer care officers has been attack, and we still have to apologize to the customer?

Their are people that won't even exchange words with you at you hospital or clinic, but one petition from them you loose you license to practice.

So stop beating your chest over here, like your doing anyone a favour being a Doctor.

At the end people still die in hospital or clinic due to your misdiagnosis.

My dear, if you come to a Government owned Hospital that's purely service & not profit oriented to do anyhow, you WILL see anyhow!

You're swallowing your insults because you want your patients to come back next time to make more money for your company. Ours is a non-profit service.

I always tell my patients, your Bill's isn't what pays my salary. I'll even prefer not to see you and be enjoying myself in a beer parlor, so when I'm seeing you, it's actually me doing you a favour with all humility. I don't expect you to kneel down to greet me, just behave yourself the way you'll want others to behave to you, that's all!

If that's too difficult for you to do as a patient, then pls don't come to me. Just go to a private hospital set up where you can get "value" for your money, as it seems your definition of one being good at what they do is to swallow as much insults as possible, and not to render the actual service one has been employed to do.

Na so una dey carry different complications come Government Hospitals be that, cos of your hatred for the fact we don't take your insults as you will want us to.

Laslas, na we go suffer the consequences or you?

I always advice my elder sister to go to a General Hospital whenever she terribly I'll, and to humble herself so as to get quality treatment. She has great testimonies to share.

Continue going to Hospitals with the mindset that everyone must stand at attention for you once you enter. Who go stand at attention for the remaining patients wey full for there?
Mindset of a Nigerian Doctor.

Your are one of the reason our healthcare is in shambles.

Tomorrow you embark on industrial action/strike calling on Nigerians to support your cause.

Let me tell you every service provider(banks, telecom e.t.c) get insulted from client/customer.

Decorum is part of our training.

Na why most of una dey carry wrong assumption come Hospital be that. Person talk sey hin don comot Naija dey enjoy his practice, you still dey tall sey can he try this outside Naija.

He's obviously not experiencing difficult patina like you.
Read well ,

I said he cant try this outside Nigeria,

Ask him if he is maltreating his patients outside Nigeria the way they do in Nigeria.

Who told you there are no difficult patient in EU/US

If he tries this outside Nigerian, his at risk of loosing his licence.

Nigerian patients and their relatives can be very rude and annoying.

When i was practising in Nigeria,
If you talk to me in a disrespectful manner,I will document it and ignore you.
You can go to Aso Rock Clinic and get first class treatment.

I hope the doctor documented and communicated the reason for not attending to the child.

My advise to my colleagues in Nigeria...
Save up money and relocate.
Its paradise over here.
And you claim to be a Doctor.

Can you even try this outside Nigeria?

Every Service provider experience rude clients/customers, but we have to do our Jobs.

SEGLIZ:
Good morning to all the comrades on nairaland.
please, i would like to know if this is the standard procedure.

I was at one of the NIN centre in Abeokuta on Friday 4th of October, to get myself registered, on getting there I inquired from people I met on ground how to go about things.

I was told to go out to a nearby fuel station to get the form. at the station, the fuel attendant (a lady to be precise) told me I am to pay a fee of a hundred Naira before I can get the form.

Questioning the act the young lady only turn to whatever it was she was reading before my arrival without giving a damn I was there standing. after I payed for the form, i returned to the center to fill out the form only to hear people at about 5 minutes past 10, saying they've stop the collection of form till the next day which would be today Monday.

Please is it the standard procedure to buy this form as a citizen or a foreigner intending to naturalize?

N. B. I intentionally held back the name of that centre for now.
I did my pre-enrolment online before going to their office.
