If we continue with this cash crunch, do you think we will be able to vote? Thank God almighty. Reasonable men are still around in the court.. Everything must not be viewed from political angle. Let the old money and the new one circulates together for a while. The old 200, 500 and 1000 notes that goes into the bank should remain in the bank for onwards transferred into cbn for whatever they so wish to do with it. New naira notes will be made to come out to circulation gradually and everyone will have money to spend. Oga park well. Nigerians did not start suffering with this cash crunch. Nigerians have been suffering for the last 8 years going from frying pan to fire. How much is fuel in your area today? It is only because it is election season that is why those that want to rig the election are fighting for suspension of the naira swap. |

Johnrake69: You can't enforce cashless policy overnight. How much electricity do you generate and distribute? A country in total darkness wants to implement cashless policy. Really laughable.
Let's test your theory. Because Pos agents are withdrawing their own money from ATM then the banks should rather save the available cash in their vaults and render their machines inoperative. Smh.
So many of my transactions from Gtbank to Access took 72 hours to complete using my app in the last one month but according to you we should live or pretend to live like those in US and Canada.
Before the Naira design max withdrawal from ATM was 120K. Now, max withdrawal is 20K. By all means CBN should guarantee that #20K daily withdrawal to any bank customer with cash in the bank. Up Till few days before the deadline banks were paying out old notes while they kept selling new notes to the highest bidder.
A governor should be setting up tax force to check banks and not Pos if they want to effect change. Bankers are selling cash to customers. Like I said before our over reliance on cash is the major problem. I agree with you that Banks should have done more preparation in anticipation of the kickoff of this policy after all this policy was first initiated 10 years ago and with proper planning most of these challenges would have been addressed. That said you cannot discountenance the fact that we live in a highly flawed society permeated by corruption at all levels. With galloping inflation and the harsh economic realities coupled with the highly restricted supply of new notes to the banks how do you not expect a bank manager (unless one with the fear of God) to fall to temptation when someone walks up to him and promises to offer him a healthy commission if he can source for cash for him? If he needs 10m to effectively load his ATMs and pay customers for the week and instead is supplied 1m what do you expect him to do? He has to make some difficult choices and definitely people will suffer. If unfortunately his principles can be bought he will sell to the highest bidder. |

KushLyon: We are not ready for a cashless economy. Since this whole new currency issue started, banks have been acting crazy and some bank apps don't even open at all. My debit cards haven't been working since for some days now and whenever I try to use a POS to pay, it get declined. As for bank transfer, a lot of businesses have started adding a fee to any transfer you do. I tried paying for something yesterday with bank transfer and the woman told me there's a fee of N100. We still have a very long way to go before we can embrace cashless economy, a lot of things have to be fixed first You are right but we must start somewhere. Truth be told the banks did not expand their network capacity in anticipation of increased card usage and mobile transfers with the advent of the Cashless policy. |

Politics › Re: Naira Notes Scarcity: Edo Govt To Set Up Special Task Force On Pos Agents by obi58: 6:27am On Feb 07, 2023 |
Johnrake69: This man is a clown. POS agents have nothing to do with the naira scarcity. It was same Pos agents that were charging just #200 for 20K withdrawal few months ago before Naira redesign.
If ATMs are dispensing cash nobody will bother using Pos agents. Some weeks ago in the whole of Ago and Okota only 1 Access bank atm was dispensing. This corridor has over 15 banks.
3 Access bank branches, 1 UBA, 1 Stanbic Ibtc, 1Ecobank, 1 Polaris, 1 Fidelity, 2 Gtbank branches, 1 Fcmb, 1 Zenith Bank, 1 Firstbank, 1 Sterling bank and 1 Keystone bank.
Politicians like to chase shadows. Police should raid every bank vault and charge both CEO and branch managers to court for committing felonies against the state. You're just a clown..... The reason for the whole new naira regime is to reduce Nigerian's overdependence on cash. Abroad people don't move about with much physical cash when 99% of their transactions are paid for by card or transfer. The demand for cash far exceeds supply that is why banks have difficulty in keeping their ATMs loaded. It is the same problem with the new notes. Yes there is politics involved in it without a doubt but the fundamentals are the same. Government wants more people to go cashless. Now even if you load 20m in your ATM POS agents are on standby to withdraw all the money. I hear that now they even pay multiple people to go to the ATM and withdraw on their behalf. In addition they also have multiple cards all in a bid to bypass the CBN restrictions. As a result an ATM that could have served 500 people will end up serving just 50 people meanwhile not enough deposits are coming in because people are hoarding their cash either to use themselves or to sell to pos agents who of course will sell at ridiculous rates to Nigerians who no dey hear word. Even major cash depositors like fuel stations are not allowed to go and deposit their monies at the bank at close of business because POS agents are there to buy their cash! Banks thus are put Inbetween a rock and a hard place of limited supply and unlimited demand for cash! If majority of small businesses start accepting transfers or get a POS for their business payments or get a QR code which a customer can scan and make payment, gradually demand for physical cash will reduce over time and with the reduction in demand, all those stockpiling their cash will release same into circulation. Things are difficult right now in some areas crazy sef but I believe we are on the right track. Government should allow this scarcity to remain until after election after which they can relax some controls. There should be an expansion of network capacity by banks to accommodate the increased transfers which is sure to occur to ensure more customer buy in, improved service and reduced transfer issues which is the major reason why people distrust transfers. Finally a task force should be setup to monitor cash pos operators to check their excesses and avoid over exploitation of the people. It's crazy for people to have to pay 1000 or 2000 naira to withdraw 10000 naira! |

The hold up is on another level especially those who queue on the expressway trying to buy fuel and block other road users. Why would anyone criticize the government for asking these petrol stations to stop selling by 4pm. If these filling stations can't get their customers to be orderly when waiting to buy fuel, then they should shut down by 4pm,it's crazy when you have to wait for hours just to pass by a filling station. Gov Sanwo-olu should form a task force to close down any erring station that allows it customers to block the entire road and force other road users to stay in traffic for hours unending. God bless Nigeria. You're the one that is crazy. Go and find out was the M in LASTMA means. IbeOkehie:

In 1975 the federal government seized control of universities and schools to promote universal availability and ensure access for all.
We know the results after 50 years. Look around at the condition of government owned schools all over Nigeria.
Sometime in the 1970s, the federal government seized control of the only refinery in Nigeria which was then owned by a foreign company called BP. Today that refinery is producing ZERO fuel.
Added to that, the federal government started paying fuel subsidy in 1973 to ensure affordable prices for the masses.
How has that worked out?
In 2015 upon assuming office, the first thing President Buhari did was to ban all private importation of petrol. He made NNPC the sole importer to ensure transparency and fight corruption.
How has that worked out?
Before 1999, all cement factories in Nigeria were owned by government. Nigeria used to have widespread scarcity of cement just like scarcity of petrol today.
Around 2005 the government sold off all the cement factories to private investors. Dangote bought Benue Cement, BUA bought CCNN in Sokoto. Unicem bult a factory in Cross River and Lafarge in Adamawa or so. Nigeria even exports cement today.
The ONLY unproductive cement factory in Nigeria is Nkalagu cement which is still owned by Ebonyi State because they refused to sell to Ibeto Cement.
There's has been no scarcity of cement in Nigeria since round 2009 or so.
Government is the problem. Remove government and problems disappear. Insert government and problems will grow. It's a real lesson that we have seen live in the Nigerian economy. I don't know why Nigerians find it hard to understand Whilst I agree that government and corruption are hand in hand in 3rd world countries, in this instance the problem is not the government. The imported fuel is available at the tank farms but the tank farms are hoarding same and inflating prices not the government. Government is still partially to blame because they are seeing the excesses of these depot owners and how it's frustrating their efforts to subsidise fuel and they are not taking action. Unless you are accusing the government of being complicit with these depots which I frankly don't believe. I do believe that if government steps in all these excesses will disappear overnight. |

Moh247: Subsidy going bit by bit
When Dangote Refinery comes on stream You're talking of subsidy going bit by bit meanwhile 3 trillion was earmarked for the first 6 months of the year. With this provision, there is still scarcity everywhere and government is turning a blind eye to the massive exploitation of the masses by the depot owners. These are desperate times and desperate times call for desperate measures. Any depot found to be hoarding fuel should be taken over by government. Same thing should be done to those inflating their prices and causing this artificial scarcity. Even if we are in the last days of the administration, government should not turn a blind eye to these practices and instead work assiduously to leave a good legacy behind. |
