Good worth million of naira were destroyed in the early hours of Saturday as fire gutted Bababa Shopping Plaza, located inside the popular Wunti Market in Bauchi metropolis.

DAILY POST gathered that the fire incident started on the top floor of the one-storey plaza at about 12:45am.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with DAILY POST, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Bauchi State Fire Service, Abubakar Babanyaya Bala, disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the fire outbreak occurred as a result of power surge in one of the over 100 shops.

According to Bala, as of the time traders were closing on Friday, there was no power supply to the plaza, adding that the power surge leading to the fire outbreak happened when public power was restored.

“We received a call from someone that there is a fire outbreak in the market. The fire started in the midnight at the Bababa Shopping Plaza in Wunti market in Bauchi,” the fire service spokesman said.

He added that operatives of the service were mobilised immediately and deployed to the scene of as soon as the incident was reported.

On their arrival at the scene, our men discovered that the top floor of the plaza had been engulfed by fire.

“The fire had spread to all the shops in the floor by then. Our men were able to put out the fire within 30 minutes of their arrival at the scene,” Bala said.

He said that no life was lost in the fire, adding that nobody sustained injuries in what he termed “unfortunate incident”.

The PRO, however, advised people to always ensure that they put off their electrical appliances when closing from their offices and shops, adding that they should always endeavour to switch off all appliances not in use at home.


Meanwhile, Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has ordered that the cause of the fire outbreak be investigated.

The Governor gave the order when he visited the scene of the incident as fire service men battled to put off the fire.

He assured that the state government would assist victims of the fire incident.

This is truly a spectacular expose! Now i know why Obiano was hiding the project! He wanted this precise shock and awe at the magnitude of this project when it's unveiled! The guy has left his prints in the sands of time! Even in the next 100 years, It is no longer ever going to be a question if Obiano was one of the greatest Anambra governors or not. I agree they should begin trees and flowers planting now. Infact they should create a landscaping team to start from the junction of the airport road by the Awka- Onitsha expressway all the way to inside the airport. Also, spaces around the taxiways, apron and runway should be grassed now. Even before marking of the places with paints begin.

If i were Buhari, i will rebuild the Awka - Enugu expressway as my contribution to this project.
In the future, some people may even confuse it that it was Buhari that built the entire airport and built the expressway!

The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a trending video clip which has gone viral in the social media showing a white Toyota Hilux with registration number Kogi BJK-527-AA with two male occupants fatally injured in which the recorder claimed the incident took place in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State.

The report which neither states the date nor time of the incident is absolutely misleading with the tendency of creating tension and panic in the State.

Meanwhile, preliminary inquiry conducted by the Command revealed that the alleged incident took place at Awoidemili community in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo state. Victims were only rushed to our lady of Lords hospital, Ihiala where they were comfirmed dead by the medical doctor. Consequently,the Divisional Police headquarters where the incident took place in Imo State had since commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Command wonders why the recorder could not cross check his facts with the Police in a sensitive matter such as this before sharing on the social media. The Command insists that calls for victim support in accident or security related situations and indeed other reports by social media users must be distinct and devoid of mischief of any kind.

In view of the foregoing, the Commissioner of Police *CP John B.Abang,fdc* urges the public to disregard the misleading video report and further assures them of adequate Security protection in Anambra State.
