Bank robbers kill 8 policemen

Armed robbers yesterday in Lagos went on shooting spree, killing eight policemen who attempted to foil a night robbery attack on a bank in Ikotun, Alimosho council area of the state.

Reacting however, the state police command said only two officers were killed while three others were lying critically ill at an undisclosed hospital in the area.

The police also alleged that three of the suspected robbers were killed during the shoot-out between the security operatives and the bandits who stormed the bank about 2.00am.

Daily Champion however gathered that one of the deceased policemen, a constable (names withheld) was billed to have his traditional marriage this December.

Informed sources however said the eight officers, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) an Inspector, two sergeants, three Corporals and a Constable were killed in their Patrol Van, few metres from the bank.

Our source said the policemen who had not been properly identified at press time yesterday were attached to Ikotun Police station, adding that they were responding to a distress call when they met their waterloo.

He said there was a distress call that robbers were operating at the bank and in a quick response, the Police raced to the scene only to fall prey to the bandits who were armed with sophisticated machine guns.

Daily Champion learnt that the robbers got wind of the police intervention and quickly deployed their best marksmen who eliminated the entire team of the anti-robbery squad.

The source noted that the robbers exchanged communication with the policemen, directing them the way to reach the place.

He said immediately the policemen entered their trap, the robbers in a staccato shoot-out killed all of them without the police returning any shot.

The source who pleaded anonymity said after killing the policemen, the robbers went ahead, skilfully and successfully robbed the bank.

According to him, the robbers numbering over 30 stormed the place about 2.00am and cordoned all entry and exit points to prevent people from entering or leaving the premises.

Reacting to the incident, a senior Police officer at the command, said police also killed three of the trigger-happy gunmen in the encounter.

He said three policemen who were wounded are receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of the undisclosed hospital.

When Daily Champion visited the command, the Commissioner of Police Mr Emmanuel Adebayo was said to be having emergency meeting with Senior Police officers over the issue.

Even the police spokesman, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni was said to be in a crucial meeting over the incident.

Our correspondent reports that many policemen wore gloomy look as they discussed the issue in hushed voices.

Daily Champion recalls that about 12 policemen have been killed in the last two months. Six were killed in Agege, on the outskirts of the metropolis, while another six were killed at Surulere in circumstance.

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, former military President and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), no doubt is in the menopause of his political life. Since the ex-martial ruler stepped aside from office in 1993, the ghost of his misadventure in Aso Rock Villa, the pinnacle of power, continues to haunt him. Wherever he goes, the people boo and jeer at him. His desperation to rule Nigeria again has more than ever before, pitted him against Nigerians and the international community.

Last month, Babangida’s presidential ambition suffered a setback in the United States Of America when his wife, Maryam visited that country to drum up support for IBB’s desperate quest to occupy Aso Rock Villa in 2007. In a separate meeting with select Nigerians and US government officials in Washington DC, Maryam reportedly urged her hosts to back her husband because, according to her, only IBB can keep the military boys in the barracks after the exit of President Olusegun Obasanjo. But the US officials reportedly distanced themselves from the IBB Project. They advised the self-styled evil-genius to apologise to Nigerians for annulling the June 12 Presidential election rather than warming up for the presidency. Some of the personalities at that parley were Mr. Herman Cohen, former American Assistant Secretary of State for Africa; James Addo of the African Development Foundation, ADF; Professor Omo Omoruyi, former Director-General, Centre for Democratic Studies, and a host of others.

Cohen, who is believed to be close to President George W. Bush of America, was saddled with the responsibility of running an international firm to shore-up the battered image of the gap-toothed Armoured General. But that also backfired, as Cohen reportedly turned down the offer on the grounds that IBB would be a hard sell in the United States. Before the October visit, Maryam was in US under the pretext of galvanising international support for her Better Life for Rural Women, BLRW programme, which she now calls Better Life for African Women, BLAW. But TheNEWS checks show that she was actually in that country to campaign for her husband. Our source said she even granted an interview to a TV station in the US, where she de-linked IBB’s ambition from her frequent visits to America. Her viewers were, however, not fooled by the deception of the Asaba-born former First Lady

Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, may dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in his quest to contest next year’s general elections, a top aide revealed yesterday.
The aide who spoke exclusively to Daily Trust, but who did not want to be named, said the General is currently weighing his options but would not pick the PDP nomination form.
He said: “The PDP has ceased to appeal to the General because the party has been hijacked by forces loyal to the president”.
He also revealed that Babangida believes some of his domestic staff are spying on him for the president. He said: “They are probably working for the federal government but are still within the IBB camp.”
The former president has decided he will not “queue behind some of the aspirants whom he considers his juniors in all walks of life” the aide said. He added: “It is demeaning for him to contest against the likes of Jerry Gana whom he practically brought up.”
Another reason for IBB’s decision is hinged on what the aide called “IBB’s reluctance to run against contestants from his own state.” These include Sarah Jubril, Sani Kontogora and Prof. Gana. The aide said: “Do you imagine the General running against these people?”
The aide said Babangida is “bothered” by the emergence of Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd), as a contender in the race. Gusau is a close confidant of the former president.
One of the options left for the General, according to the aide, is to join the National Democratic Party (NDP), or a welter of political parties as a platform. “In the coming days, the nation will hear from Babangida and you will know that he is a strong contender in this race”, the aide said.
Meanwhile, the national publicity secretary of the PDP said that Babangida still has up till December to pick his nomination form.
When asked why the former President has not picked the form yet, John Odey said: “How do you expect me to know that? Why not go and ask him that question? But as for the party, we are open till December for those who want the forms.”
