The Oyo State Governor-elect, Seyi Makinde, says he will retain persons appointed by the outgoing All Progressives Congress if they are found to be competent. Makinde, who won the governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party said this during an interview with Lagelu FM 96.7 which was monitored by our correspondent on Tuesday. The governor-elect, who spoke in Yoruba language, said he would put competence ahead of party consideration. He said, “We are willing to work with anyone even in the APC. If we see they are good or if an appointee appointed by the APC is good, we will retain him. At the end of the day, people are more concerned with results.” He also announced a cancellation of the N3,000 education levy which was imposed on students by the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led government. “The N3,000 which students are made to pay as education levy will be stopped immediately I take over on May 29. The money is about N1.2bn but let parents now hold unto that money and use it for their personal matters,” he said. Makinde said he would personally handle economic matters and take responsibility for anything that happens in the state. The governor-elect said he would set a six-month target for the economic revival and improve the health sector and the security of the state. He said, “We will set financial targets for ourselves every six months to make our selfs financially stable so that we will not rely on federal allocations anymore. I will personally handle the economy. “I will focus on agriculture and use it to drive the economy. We will put experts in that field.” Makinde said governing a state like Oyo would require cooperation and synergy, adding that he would consult Governor Abiola Ajimobi; ex-Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala and his predecessor, Rashidi Ladoja, for advice as he prepares to resume office on May 29. The governor-elect said his government would look into the dismissal of some government workers with a view to reinstating those who did not deserve to be sacked. “All government workers who were sacked without fault, we will review the circumstances surrounding their sack and those who didn’t deserve dismissal will be reabsorbed,” Makinde said. https://punchng.com/ill-retain-apc-appointees-who-are-competent-makinde/

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Abia North, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has been quizzed at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police Headquarters, in Umuahia, Abia State, over the February 23, 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections. Sources disclosed that, owing to the police threat to declare him wanted if he failed to report yesterday to answer questions over the elections, Ohuabunwa visited the state CID at about 3:30pm, where he was interrogated. It was not clear whether he was detained or released by the time of going to press yesterday. Ohuabunwa’s invitation by the police is believed to be in connection with the outcome of the election. An INEC official who was arrested for alleged result falsification, illegal thumb-printing of ballot papers and other related matters is currently in custody. Daily Sun gathered that a DPO and inspector invited for interrogation also over the incident have made useful statements to the police. The sources said that corps members also arrested by the police while thumb-printing ballot papers in the bush have confessed that they were kidnapped and forced to carry out the act for the PDP. When contacted, Abia State police public relations officer, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter. Former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, won the Abia North senatorial district election with 31,203 votes. He defeated Ohuabunwa, who polled 20,801 votes, and the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief David Ogba Onuoha, who scored 11,410 votes. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/police-quiz-senator-ohuabunwa-over-abia-north-polls/

The European Union (EU), has said the result of the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections, is in tandem with independent civil society observations. EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Maja Kocijancic, gave the EU’s position in a statement in Bruxelles. “Nigerians have re-elected President Muhammadu Buhari, as the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission confirms. These results are consistent with independent civil society observations. Moreover, important lessons are to be learned, in particular ahead of the State elections next week. “It is now the responsibility of all parties and candidates to strengthen democracy and unite the country,” the EU said. The EU further said its observation mission will remain in Nigeria beyond the State and House of Assembly elections and produce a final report with recommendations. The EU also said it will continue to strengthen its partnership with Nigeria. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/elections-results-tally-with-civil-society-observations-eu/ |
A civil society organisation, the Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) on Wednesday validated the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari as winner of Saturday’s presidential election. It said the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were consistent with the findings of its observers as part of its Watching the Vote (WTV) project. YIAGA Africa has as its technical partners the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the US-based National Democratic Institute. It deployed the parallel vote tabulation (PVT), described a gold standard citizen observation methodology that employs statistics and information communication technologies. Its estimates were based on observations from 3,030 observers deployed in pairs to a random statistical sample of 1,515 polling units. YIAGA Africa said INEC’s official results fell within its estimated ranges. It, therefore, urged the public, political parties and candidates to have confidence in the ballots cast at the polling units. The group said in its post-election statement: “Based on reports from 1,491 or 98.4 per cent of sampled polling units, YIAGA Africa’s findings show that for the presidential election, the All Progressive Congress (APC) should receive between 50.0 per cent and 55.8 per cent of the vote; and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should receive between 41.2 per cent and 47.0 per cent of the vote. “These figures are consistent with the official results as announced by INEC. For both APC and PDP the official results fall within the PVT estimated ranges.” YIAGA Africa’s WTV chair Dr. Hussaini Abdu added: “YIAGA Africa urges Nigerian voters, political parties, candidates and international stakeholders to have confidence in the just-concluded electoral process and the officially announced results.” The civil society group called on INEC to provide clarity around two issues which it said were of pressing concern to the Nigerians although they did not affect the overall outcome of the elections. “First, the overall, percentage of cancelled ballots announced by INEC was 3.3 per cent of all registered voters. “This figure was four times higher than the rate from 2015 when registered voters in cancelled polling units were less than 1 per cent of all registered votes. “Second, YIAGA Africa noted discrepancies between the number of registered voters announced prior to the election and the numbers announced during collation and called on INEC to provide an in-depth explanation, including of whether these differences indicated that collation did not conclude in all parts of the country. “However, YIAGA Africa noted that the PVT data, which projected its estimated vote shares on the basis of the numbers announced at the polling units before any cancelation of results could take place, showed that neither of these issues impacted the outcome of the election,” it said. The group, in the statement issued by its Communication Officer Moshood Isah, urged all political parties, candidates and Nigerians to show political maturity and maintain peace in the post-election period. It pleaded with losing candidates and parties to adhere to legal provisions for filing electoral claims and disputes. “YIAGA Africa noted that the challenges experienced during the elections call for a detailed and systematic post-election review to include an inquiry into the cancellation of ballots, an audit of the voter register and a review of the elections operation management systems,” the group said. YIAGA Africa is a nonpartisan and independent civil society organisation without affiliation to any political party, candidate or state agency. “YIAGA Africa carries out research, capacity development and policy advocacy. YIAGA AFRICA has been involved in election observation since 2007 and it is one of the leading organisations working on elections in Nigeria" the group said. http://thenationonlineng.net/uk-us-backed-observer-yiaga-validates-buharis-victory/ |

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has won with wide margin the senatorial elections results in Ideato South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. Running under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Okorocha who is from Ogboko, a village in the LGA, scored 24, 102 votes to beat his closest challenger, Jones Onyeriri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mr Onyeriri, a member of the House of Representative polled a paltry 3108 votes. He was closely followed by the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and a former senator of the district, Osita Izunaso, who polled 2801 votes. In the presidential polls, Muhammadu Buhari also scored 20,663 votes in the LGA to beat Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the PDP who polled 8,844 votes. Action Alliance won the House of Representatives in the LGA with 22,231 votes against the APC and PDP who scored 5534 and 2266 respectively. By this result, the outgoing governor has won one of the 12 local governments in his Imo West (Orlu) zone. Other results from the zone are currently being collated and summed up at the INEC office in Orlu LGA amidst tight security and tension. The governor is angling to replace Hope Uzodinma, the senator of Imo West who, in turn, is angling to replace Mr Okorocha in the governorship race coming up on March 9, in what is considered the first test of his political foray. While Mr Okorocha is hoping to deliver the district for President Buhari, he is also rooting for his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, candidate of the AA in the upcoming governorship elections. Mr Okorocha, while casting his vote earlier Saturday, confirmed incidents of ballot box snatching in some polling units in the state. There were also several reported cases of invasion and harassment by thugs mostly because there were inadequate security personnel at polling centres within the district. Shortly before the governor’s arrival, PREMIUM TIMES reported a journalist, duly accredited to cover the polls, was harassed and briefly detained by the thugs in Mr Okorocha’s polling unit 10:14 am. This happened in the watching eyes of two female police personnel at the centre. Even when the journalist reported the matter to the nearby Ogboko area command, he was further advised by the police to “stay away from the area”. The Imo West zone is famed to have produced most of the notable names from the state. Apart from being the largest senatorial district made up of 12 LGAs, Imo west has since 1999 retained the governorship seat of the state for 16 years through Achike Udenwa (1999 – 2007) and now Mr Okorocha (2011 – 2019) who governed two terms each. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-east/315774-buhari-wins-in-okorochas-local-government-area.html |

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Kano State, Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, has called on eligible voters across the country to come out en masse and vote during Saturday’s rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections. Malam Takai, who made the appeal in a statement issued by his spokesman, Auwalu Mu’azu, said the call became necessary in view of the apparent anger, frustration, shock and surprise expressed by Nigerians over the sudden postponement of the elections by INEC. He noted that except well-meaning Nigerians across all walks of life rose to the occasion and mobilised voters to participate in the rescheduled polls, the exercise might be marred by voter apathy. “In the light of the seeming disappointment of Nigerians at the polls shift, it has become necessary for all of us to work assiduously towards making sure that we encourage the electorate to come out in their numbers and take part in the coming rescheduled elections,” Takai said. In the same vein, Malam Takai drummed support for the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him to continue with the good work he started for the country. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/kano-takai-urges-massive-turn-out-support-for-buhari.html |

I quite I agree with you my presido and this was caused by the way and manner a well experienced woman Amina Zakari who is in charge of INEC operations and logistics was bullied out of her position few months to election. Recall that about 4 months ago due to pressure mounted by the PDP on INEC, the commission removed Amina Zakari from operation and logistics unit to Healthcare and Welfare unit. This is somebody who has worked in that department for years, gathering alot of experience in logistic issues however due to pressure she was replaced with Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu a newly appointed National Commissioner without much experience and the result is what we are seeing today. https://nextedition.com.ng/2018/10/12/2019-inec-removes-amina-zakari-as-head-of-electoral-operations/amp/ The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has removed Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari as the head of its Electoral Operations and Logistics Committee.https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/10/11/inec-bows-to-pressure-moves-zakari-from-operations-to-healthcare-welfare/?amp

Is this not what I have shouting since morning... It is no longer news that the 2019 general elections have been postponed due to operational and logistic difficulties but the question to ask is.....
