PoliticsBuhari Commissions Cancer Treatment Centre In Lagos by odiks(op): 4:12am On Feb 10, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday inaugurated the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) advanced Cancer treatment centre in Lagos, with a pledge to ensure that facilities for the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer are available to many more Nigerians.

At the inauguration ceremony of the state-of-the-art Centre in LUTH, Idi Araba, President Buhari announced that the model will be replicated across the country to bring quality, first-class healthcare services to cancer patients in Nigeria.

‘‘We are aware that up to 40% of funds spent by Nigerians on medical tourism is attributable to patients seeking treatment for cancer. Despite having an increasing number of citizens suffering from cancer, we until now, had only two working radiotherapy machines in the country.

‘‘Working through the NSIA and LUTH we utilized a PPP model that unlocked investment capital to directly address this issue. We will replicate this model across the country to bring quality, first-class healthcare services to as many Nigerians as we can.

‘‘Indeed, over the coming months, under our leadership, the NSIA will commission two Modern Medical Diagnostic Centres to be co-located in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano State and the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Abia State, respectively, bringing additional investment to Nigeria’s healthcare sector,’’ he said.

The President while wishing the management of the hospital good luck in operating the centre, emphasized the need for maintenance of the equipment.

‘‘Our goal today is not simply to celebrate and applaud the culmination of months of hard work to achieve this objective. Neither is it solely to revel in the successful completion of the most modern and best-equipped Cancer treatment centre in West Africa.

‘‘Indeed we are proud, but we recognize that this modest effort to address the gaps in our tertiary healthcare system alone is insufficient to address all the challenges faced by the sector.

‘‘Today, we showcase what feats we can accomplish when we are together, unrelenting in our effort to deliver a common objective.

‘‘No one ever prays to be diagnosed with Cancer, but if they are, what we have made possible here today is the hope that a true chance of survival and good quality of life becomes part of the story of many Nigerian patients with cancer,’’ he said.

The President promised that his administration, which has introduced programmes to alleviate common diseases, including the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund targeted at ensuring access to primary healthcare for all Nigerians, will continue to push hard to raise awareness about cancer, educate the people and facilitate early diagnosis.

He noted that this objective was part of his solemn commitment to Nigerians four years ago to improve the quality of health care in the country.

The President, who performed the ceremony after attending the APC presidential campaign rally at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere, Lagos, said his administration had focused on greater investment in the sector and worked hard to ensure increased access to safe, high-quality healthcare.

‘‘We promised to effect policies that would remove debilitating constraints on the sector and create sustainable structures to strengthen our healthcare institutions.

‘‘Today, we are gathered here to acknowledge the modest but laudable strides we are making in fulfilling that promise. We recognize that progress in the health sector is handicapped by several bottlenecks.

‘‘Accordingly, we have worked and we will continue to work to ensure that systems are introduced to bridge these gaps,’’ he said.

The President told the audience at LUTH that the Federal Government has created an enabling environment for institutions such as the NSIA to help fund high impact projects on time and on budget, thereby delivering immense value for our people.

‘‘In the case of the Cancer Centre, we can measure this value in currency, but we prefer to measure the value in terms of its social impact, the number of lives of Nigerians that will be saved and positively affected as well as the impact of capacity building for our people,’’ he said.

In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NSIA, Mr. Uche Orji said the Centre is expected to raise the bar in the quality and standard of cancer treatment in Nigeria with outcomes that would be consistent with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

‘‘In addition, this Centre will demonstrate the economic potential of healthcare investments in Nigeria and catalyse increased private sector participation,” he said.

Also speaking, Professor Chris Bode, Chief Medical Director, LUTH, noted that the Centre is world-class and no Nigerian cancer patient needs to travel abroad again to receive treatment easily obtainable at home.

‘‘We, therefore, want to assure Your Excellency that we shall give what it takes to run this Centre as a pride to all Nigerians. NSIAs investment is not only safe but will yield ample dividend to encourage other deep pocket investors to open up the health sector as a veritable investors’ haven, ’’ he said.

Also speaking, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole described the Centre as the single largest investment in cancer treatment in the country by any administration since independence.

Prof. Adewole added that the facility can cater for 100 patients daily and provide training for over eighty healthcare professionals, among many others.

PoliticsRe: Why Eurasia Group Projected President Muhammadu Buhari To Win The 2019 Elections by odiks(op): 7:49am On Feb 09, 2019
Flashback

PoliticsWhy Eurasia Group Projected President Muhammadu Buhari To Win The 2019 Elections by odiks(op): 7:47am On Feb 09, 2019
Eurasia Group, reputed as the world’s largest political-risk consultancy, says President Muhammadu Buhari will win the February 16 presidential election.

In its final Eurasia Group Politics First election forecast seen by TheCable, the group, which was founded in 1998 by American political scientist Ian Bremmer, said Buhari has a 60 percent probability to win.

“Opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar has regained some momentum in recent weeks, but President Muhammadu Buhari remains favored to win (a 60% probability),” the group said.

“On election day, the ruling All Progressives Congress’s (APC’s) significantly greater control of local political structures and resources—it governs 23 states compared to the opposition’s 12—will boost voter mobilization and solidify Buhari’s advantage.”

In 2015, Eurasia Group tipped Buhari to defeat former president Goodluck Jonathan, changing its stance some weeks to the election, after it had initially chosen the former president to win.

At the time, the group said although it initially tipped “President Goodluck Jonathan for re-election, a number of factors had since changed, and the pendulum had swung to the Buhari’s side”.

1. ONNOGHEN WILL NOT AFFECT ELECTIONS

The group said the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend Walter Onnoghen, the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, will not affect the elections.

“Positive news coverage in recent weeks, along with Buhari’s controversial move to suspend Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen over allegations of corruption, have boosted Atiku’s campaign, but it is too late to change the electoral dynamics and Buhari remains favored to win on 16 February,” the group said.

“As we have previously noted, key actors in Atiku’s camp—including his campaign’s director general Bukola Saraki, key powerbroker Governor Nyesom Wike of the oil-rich Rivers state, and southeast governors from his People’s Democratic Party (PDP)—had been disengaged from his election campaign”.

2. WIKE ANNOYED, SARAKI DISTRACTED

The group added that Atiku’s big players have been disengaged from his political campaign, adding that governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be fighting to ensure they win their own elections.

“Wike was annoyed by Atiku’s failure to consult him on key decisions, Saraki remains distracted by a tough Senate reelection battle in Kwara state, and the southeast governors are hampered by many conflicting motivations, including their own lack of political clout (which makes them reluctant to overtly challenge the federal government) and their wariness of Atiku’s running mate Peter Obi, a former governor of the southeastern Anambra state who they view as a political outsider.

“The lack of enthusiasm on the part of some PDP governors is a problem for Atiku because these officials control significant discretionary funds at the state level (known as ‘security votes’) that are easier to access without triggering graft concerns.”

3. ATIKU’S SUPPORTERS NOT WILLING TO DIE FOR HIM

The group concluded by saying “Atiku’s voters do not match Buhari’s in passion and are unlikely to risk their lives on the streets for him”.

“Though Buhari’s decision to suspend the chief justice triggered widespread criticism and stoked passions (along with fears about a more autocratic Buhari second term), many voters blame the judiciary for not moving quicker to force Onnoghen’s resignation after he admitted he had violated rules regarding declaration of assets.

“Thus, should Atiku lose, as we expect, there will be few motivated stakeholders to encourage or instigate serious violence. Instead, we expect PDP governors to quickly turn their attention to fighting to retain their own jobs in state elections on 2 March”

A few weeks ago, Eurasia Group said Buhari will continue as a politically weak president, while Atiku may retract his pledge made during campaign season.

PoliticsHerdsmen Attacked My Farm, Suspended CJN Walter Onnoghen Tells Police by odiks(op): 7:59am On Feb 06, 2019
Suspended CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen has written a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, alleging that some suspected herdsmen invaded his farm, Wanogan Farms Limited, located around the Masaka area of Nasarawa State, on Friday, February 1, 2019.

In the petition signed by one of his lawyers, Ogwu Onoja (SAN), the suspended CJN urged the police to investigate and provide security around his property.

The letter read in part, “We have been reliably informed by our client that some men who appear to be herdsmen were at the farm on Friday afternoon and also later at night inquiring about the owner of the farm and issued frightening threats to the farmhands working there.

The workers are now living in fear and consequently have stopped all farming activities. The farm belonging to the family of the CJN is a large commercial venture wherein veritable investments in time, labour and financial resources have been committed.

“We consider such a threat as an indication of imminent attack on the lives and property on the farm and we implore you, in the discharge of your constitutional duty as the number one police officer of the nation, to deploy your men to secure the farm.”

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu Is Right; Atiku’s Adamawa Was In Northern Cameroon by odiks(op): 5:13am On Feb 04, 2019
Before I give a historical perspective on the veracity of Nnamdi Kanu’s claim that Atiku Abubakar is “originally from Cameroon”, I must say this about this disturbed personality.

Kanu is a disadvantaged character who does not take himself seriously, but who some lost Igbo sons and daughters, in terrible need of guidance, take seriously.

I do not think he regards much of the rottenness that proceeds from his vocal aperture. I believe he laughs at himself and takes a dip with the cacophony that his bizarre utterances and “commandments” effectuate.

Kanu is a “little scared figure” with the ego of a planet. He is what happens when elders fail, and the people yearn for guidance; a lodestar to show them the way. Whoever emerges to cater to their sentiments is king.

But I think Kanu knows he has thousands of young impressionable minds in his thrall; so he provides them fodder to feed their sentiments, curiosity, bias and confusion. This is how he keeps his business enterprise alive.

It is all about “influencing”. Kanu is not different from Speed Darlington, the Instagram clown, who markets products for clients by making wry comedy out of them.

The more controversial he gets, the more his influence and the more financial endorsements from “sponsors”.

When Kanu marketed the Buhari body-double conspiracy theory, he scored a big one. Many Nigerians, including professors swallowed the garbage. I read as some professors theorised about the possibility of his claim and shuddered at the “certificated ignorance”.

I was surprised that only a few people realised that Kanu was delivering a PR assignment – denuding Buhari. And he was successful at it. President Buhari had to succumb to pressure to confirm his own existence.

But now, he says Atiku is “originally from Cameroon”, and that the PDP presidential candidate became a Nigerian when his region through a referendum became part of Nigeria.

Is he right? Is there a method to his madness? Yes. Kanu may not be entirely wrong.

On 11 February 1961, a plebiscite was held in British Cameroons to determine which parts of the territory will stay in Cameroon or align with Nigeria. While northern Cameroon favoured a union with Nigeria, southern Cameroon wanted an alignment with the mother country. On 1 June, 1961, northern Cameroon became part of Nigeria, and on 1 October 1961, the southern territory dissolved into Cameroon.

And really, much of the present day Adamawa state in Nigeria is part of the old northern Cameroon. In fact, there is a region called “Adamawa” in Cameroon today. And even the kingdom of the Lamido of Adamawa stretches into Cameroon.

However, Kanu’s claim, though historically correct, is for exploitative propaganda purposes.

Kanu does not believe in Biafra, he only believes in the idea of making a living by selling an illusory kingdom.

Biafra is just merchandise for him.

Fredrick is media personality.

PoliticsOnnoghen’s Trial, Proof Of Deeper Rot In Judiciary – SANs by odiks(op): 7:43pm On Feb 02, 2019
Twenty Senior Advocates of Nigeria, under the aegis of The Justice Reform Project, have described the corruption allegations against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as “a manifestation of deeper malaise” in the nation’s judiciary.

The SANs, who said they were deeply embarrassed by the Onnoghen saga, said it pointed to the need for urgent reforms in the judiciary.

They admitted that there were cases of litigants and lawyers procuring court judgements and orders, saying the spate of conflicting judgements being churned by judges is one proof of the corruption and incompetence in the system.

As a result of the rot, the SANs noted with regret, that unlike in the past, judgements from Nigerian courts were no longer being cited with approval in foreign courts.

From the composition of the National Judicial Council, to the process of appointing judges, to the criteria for the award of the SAN rank and others, the SANs said the system needed to be reformed.

They said these in a statement on Saturday, which they jointly signed.

Those who signed the statement are Mr Ebun Sofunde, Mr Kayode Sofola, Kola Awodein, Ademola Akinrele, Dr Eyimofe Atake, Mrs Olufunke Adekoya, Oluwafemi Atoyebi, Mr Yemi Candide-Johnson, Olasupo Shasore, Dr Babatunde Ajibade, Osaro Eghobamien, and Mr Babatunde Fagbohunlu.

Others are Mr Wemimo Ogunde, Mr Jibrin Okutepa, Mr Olumide Sofowora, Prof Ernest Ojukwu, Mr Olatunde Adejuyigbe, Dr Adewale Olawoyin, Mr Adeniyi Adegbonmire, and Mr Oyesoji Oyeleke.

The group said, “Certain facts are hardly contestable. There is a widespread perception that there is corruption in the judiciary and this perception is supported by anecdotal evidence.

“Unscrupulous litigants and some complicit lawyers, including some Senior Advocates, procure judgments and orders by corrupt means. It is also beyond dispute that the system for self-regulation in the judiciary and the legal profession has failed. Lack of transparency and a depreciation of the basic ethos of governance in the processes and procedures of the relevant institutions lies at the very heart of the challenges that the Bench and the Bar are currently facing.”

The SANs declared their resolve to engage with other stakeholders in the judiciary towards reforming the system.

PoliticsCrack In Ohaneze Ndi Igbo As Sec Gen, Abia Monarch Endorse Buhari For 2nd Term by odiks(op): 4:59am On Jan 30, 2019
AS President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign rally continued in the South-East, the political issues that bedevilled the Igbo came to the fore with the crack in the ranks of the apex pan Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo rearing its ugly head.

President Buhari visited Abia and Imo States yesterday in continuation of the Presidential campaign rally of the APC.

Recall, the Chief John Nnia Nwodo-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo had last week announced the endorsement of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi as his running mate.

However, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Uche Okwukwu, who allegedly had earlier expressed a dissenting view from that of his chairman, called on Ndigbo to vote for Buhari, the APC Presidential candidate.

The second endorsement was by the chairman of Aba Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty, Dr Isaac Ikonne, Enyi 1 of Aba, who called on all indigenes of Abia State to vote for Buhari, the APC Presidential candidate.

Okwukwu announced that the adoption of President Buhari as the true Ohanaeze candidate who will be formally recognised as such at a coming event at the Aso Rock Villa
.

He said the Igbo people would “remain loyal and committed to President Buhari for the payment of pensions to ex-Biafran security personnel; for the administration’s policy on ease of doing business,” which, the traditional ruler said, had benefited the Igbo more than any other ethnic group, and “the massive infrastructural development going on throughout the South-East.”

He said: “You love Nigeria and you need to return to consolidate your fight against the monster called corruption and to take us to the next level. I want to assure you that Aba and Abians and indeed all Igbos will massively vote for you.”

On his part, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, welcomed the existing “synergy” between the federal government and his state which he said, had come with enormous gains that are cherished by the government and the people.

PoliticsOnnoghen: Falana Accuses NBA Of Playing Double Standard by odiks(op): 1:43pm On Jan 29, 2019
Rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN) has accused the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) of playing double standard by taking a position to support the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Falana argued that it was wrong for the NBA that called for the suspension of judges who were arrested by security agents in 2016 to now turn around to fault the suspension of a CJN, against who pm a charge is pending.

Falana, who was at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to attend to a case, in defiance of the NBA’s directive that lawyers boycott court, said the directive was ignored by many lawyers who turned up in court today.

He said while he faulted the Executive’s decision to suspend the CJN on an ex-parte order, he thinks Onnoghen should resign.

Just contemplating... Will Justice Walter Onnoghen ever get JUSTICE from Justice Tanko Muhammed now headed Supreme Court considering the fact that....

1. He is the acting CJN and a potential CJN in the making.

2. He is the new chairman of the NJC by virtue of being the acting CJN in the interim, space created by the suspension of Onnoghen and formerly the Deputy Chairman of the Council who can act in the absence of the chairman.

3. He will also be the person that will constitute the panel that will hear justice Onnoghen's appeal for reinstatement and quashing of the CCT charges preferred against him if the matter finally gets to the Supreme Court.

For me this is a very tricky one for the new acting CJN justice Tanko Muhammed.

Politics2000 PDP Members Will Welcome Buhari To Ebonyi – Gov Umahi by odiks(op): 10:56pm On Jan 25, 2019
Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has assured that President Muhammadu Buhari would be welcomed to the state by at least 2000 members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Umahi has also allowed the All Progressives Congress (APC) to use the Pa Ngele Oruta stadium, Abakaliki for the party’s presidential rally on Jan.30.

He disclosed this on Friday at Ugbodo, headquarters of Ebonyi Local Government Area, during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship rally.

He said the President would be accorded all necessary courtesy.

“We would take our rallies on that day to our three senatorial zones while we allow them (APC) to use the stadium,” the governor said.

He sought the permission of the PDP supporters to allow some members to be at the stadium to receive President Buhari.

“At least, 2, 000 PDP members would receive the President at the stadium while you go about your rallies in your various zones.

“I have identified those who will receive the President; so, when you see our people at the stadium, don’t be angry, because it is my arrangement.

“We would even help them (opposition) with buses to get people from Enugu and Abia,” he said.

He thanked the people for the support for his administration and pledged to deliver more dividends of democracy such as infrastructure and health care services, if re-elected.

“I urge our party supporters not to destroy posters of the opposition party because we have the crowd and are on ground,” Umahi said.

Sen. Sam Egwu (PDP—Ebonyi North) said the large turnout of people at the event was an indication that people have accepted the governor.

Egwu, who is the first civilian governor of the state, noted that Ebonyi had been a peaceful state and should remain so before, during and after the elections,” he said.

Chief Goddy Ogbaga, Former Minister of State for Power, who hails from the area, commended the governor for his numerous infrastructure provisions to the people.

“We also thank you for appointing our people into strategic government positions and have resolved to reciprocate these gestures by voting massively for you and all PDP candidates at the elections,” he said. (NAN)

PoliticsUmahi Pledges N5m Support To Sonni Ogbuoji, APC Governorship Candidate In Ebonyi by odiks(op): 5:48am On Jan 25, 2019
The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, has warned his supporters not to tear or deface the campaign posters of the opposition parties in the state.

He warned that doing so might lead to unnecessary rivalry and possibly breaking down of law and order which his administration has worked very hard to achieve in more than three years it came on board.

Umahi gave the warning in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state while addressing a crowd of his supporters during a campaign rally held in the premises of the council headquarters.

“We ask our people not to tear the posters of any other political party. PDP is on the ground. If you meet them don’t tear their posters,” Umahi warned.

This was even as he pledged the sum of N5 million as support to his rival in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Sonni Ogbuoji. The donation, Umahi said, was to enable him and his running mate in the March 2 governorship election to change his posters and billboards across the state with good ones.

Umahi, who subsequently ordered his Chief of Staff, Offor Okorie, to release the money immediately to the APC guber candidate, said he was constrained to make the donation because the campaign posters of the APC governorship hopeful and his running mate were not good looking.

“I want to donate N5 million to assist them to change their pictures. For the sake of the image of Ebonyi State, let them change those posters and billboards. People will think that is how Ebonyi people look like. I want the Chief of Staff to release the money immediately to them,” Umahi said.

Umahi, however, said that he was happy that his administration was able to restore peace in the war-torn Ezza/Ezzilo communities, an inter-communal war which claimed several lives and properties.

“When we were campaigning in 2015, this land was so challenged. The land was full of blood and the anger of God came upon the land and the entire Ebonyi State. And when we were campaigning, we made a promise that we were going to restore peace. It wasn’t by pride but by the grace of God

“As soon as God did it for us, we set out a peace committee under the leadership of Fr Nwali. And so, it is an opportunity to be grateful to God.

“We came and planted trees of peace and ever since then, through the prayers of our traditional rulers, spiritual fathers and lords, elders and sons and daughters of the state, we have peace in the land of Ishielu.

“We have peace to the extent that Ibeto is now concluding the fabrication of NIGERCEM cement machines. To the extent that NIGERCEM road is built on concrete, to the extent that seven bridges are springing up along that road.

“To the extent that Agba/Ntezi/Isu road is being awarded now and will soon start this month. To the extent that we have two more autonomous communities in this land; to the extent that we have our general hospital in this local government completely renovated.

“To the extent that the NYSC, not only that they have returned, but they are ‘Atikulated’; to the extent that we are building new schools; we are renovating the Ezillo Water Scheme. There is no alternative to peace,” he added.
