Death toll hits 57 as unidentified disease sweeps through Enugu communities
At least 57 persons have died at Ette and Umuopu communities in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State following the outbreak of a strange disease in the affected communities.
According to the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer in the council area, Vincent Oshomi, the cause of the strange deaths is not yet known. However, he said that the Enugu State Ministry of Health has been alerted and specimen of the affected persons in the communities collected for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Oshomi also informed Vanguard on Thursday that the disease broke out at Ette at the beginning of September 2020, and spread to the border community of Umuopu, where 20 persons have died, including four casualties recorded yesterday.
He further explained that the victims presented symptoms such as convulsion, diarrhoea before vomiting blood, adding that they are suspecting Lassa fever or cholera.
He also said “Between September and now, at least 37 persons have died at Ette community. Also, Umuopu community, which shares a common border with Ette have recorded 20 deaths, four of which happened yesterday. It has been a strange development.
“I have officially informed the state’s Ministry of Health and investigations are currently ongoing to unravel the cause of the deaths. We have collected samples of affected persons and we are looking out for Lassa fever, cholera, yellow fever and meningitis. Coronavirus test will equally start in the affected communities today.
“The state’s Ministry of Health has brought an ambulance we are using to convey the sick ones to Enugu for proper diagnosis and treatment.”
While reacting to the development, the chairman of the local government area, Ejike Itodo, who said he was on top of the situation, added that he would convene a meeting of stakeholders today (Thursday), to begin thorough enlightenment about the strange disease.
While assuring the affected communities that the situation would be put under control, he said that the state’s Ministry of Health and other health workers in the council area are working assiduously to ensure that more casualties will not be recorded.
According to the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the local government area, Comrade Mabel Ogili, a 30-year-old student of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Chinedu Oyiga, 40-year-old Emeka Elugwu Onu, and 47-year-old Simon Eze were among the 20 casualties at Umuopu community
Meanwhile, all efforts to speak with the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Emmanuel Obi, on the development, proved abortive as he neither responded to phone calls nor text message put through to his phone line at the time of filing this report. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/11/death-toll-hits-57-as-unidentified-disease-sweeps-through-enugu-communities/

Cetacean419: Personally Comparing Pharmacy and Radiography is like comparing Apples and Oranges. How I wish you compared it with Med lab it would have been Okay. Radiographers assist radiologist to provide Clearer pictures of images and assisting patient to the X-ray room and getting those Images as clearly and accurate as possible. The Medical Laboratory Scientist is supposed to assist the pathologist to get results of test majorly body fluids then communicate it to the Pathologist more often times or Sometimes to the Physician. From History you will see that Radiography and Clinical Laboratory Science was designed to aid the Radiologist and Pathologist because they will be too busy reading films of X-rays and slides respectively. I can't Imagine a Radiologist handling CT-Scan, MRI machines were he has other important diseases to diagnose. IN NIGERIA EVERYBODY WANT TO BE IMPORTANT AND INDEPENDENT NOT MINDING THE HEALTH OF PATIENTS. I HAVE NOT SEEN IN A BIG HOSPITAL WERE THEY SAID THAT THEY WANT TO SEE A RADIOGRAPHER OR A MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS. OR HAVE YOU? It is only when you have attained a Masters in Diagnostic Radiography you can diagnose patient a bit independently of a Radiologist but you must seek a Radiologist for Real issues. Pharmacy is quite far from Medicine not to talk more of Radiography. BE GUIDED @ODOCTOR I only laugh. Lol. Honestly you r correct, but I put emphasis on 'NIGERIA' .A radiographer is better of. |

FLASH: The Lagos State Government has directed all pupils/students in public and private schools to stay at home following the tension generated by the anti- SARS protests.
Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, who issued the directive today, said the safety of the pupils/students, parents and all staff working in schools is paramount at this critical period. She however advised parents to keep an eye on their wards and not allow them to be used as willing tools in the hands of those who might want to hijack the protests to unleash mayhem on the society.
The Commissioner also encouraged schools to utilize other means of distance teaching and learning i.e radio, television and online media as they have been doing during and post the recent COVID-19 lockdown.According to Adefisayo, a new date of resumption for all classes will be announced as soon as possible. https://twitter.com/Mr_JAGss/status/1318253119348838400?s=19

Good evening, What actually are antibiotics? I can authoritatively say, that most persons that consume antibiotics do not know what antibiotics are.... Antibiotics are not drugs for treating 'infections'. They are not drugs for treating malaria. They are not one type of drug, they are a wide group of drugs. They all do not do the same thing. There are principles involved in their prescription. They are potential poisons They are dangerous What actually are antibiotics? https://odoctor.ng/antibiotics-things-you-must-know/ |

Just when we think we have heard and seen it all... Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba 3' FG Urges ASUU Members to Consider Farming as Alternative Profession October 6, 2020 3:08 am Share By Kuni Tyessi
The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has urged members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to leave the teaching profession and consider going into farming, stressing that more farmers are needed in the country.
Also, in preparation for the reopening of schools, Nwajuiba said some of the modalities that have been put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 will include afternoon classes in order to prevent overcrowding.
Nwajuiba who was a guest on ARISE NEWS Channel in Abuja yesterday, reiterated that all schools must enforce the COVID-19 protocols.
He said: “Some people may not believe what we are doing but we must continue to enforce that. You must continue to abide by the protocol. You must provide them. We don’t really care about how much inconvenience or how convenient you think it is for your child to wear facemask. Obey the rules first. If we find out you’re not following those rules, we will have to deal with somebody.”
On the protracted strike by the ASUU, the minister who recalled that the union did not embark on the strike on the basis of the pandemic, said the university lecturers might consider farming, insisting that more farmers are needed in the nation.
He said the federal government has shown commitment to their demands.
Acknowledging that the union has the right to express itself and make demands, the minister noted that up till July 2020, all academic staff had been paid salaries
“Government is actually not holding anyone to ransom. It says this is how I want to pay and it has to be through IPPIS. You can leave the employment. You can opt out of it and say ‘I no longer want to teach’. You can find other professions. What we need now are probably more farmers."
“You cannot keep forcing your employer and tell him, ‘I will like you to pay me my money through my pillow. Or, I will like you to pay it through this mailbox’. ASUU has a lot of complaints and dissipation around it. That is legitimate but doesn’t mean you should force yourself on the man who has the money.” https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/10/06/fg-urges-ASUU-members-to-consider-farming-as-alternative-profession/ |
