Politics › FG, South East Leaders Reiterate Commitment To Unity, Stability Of Nigeria by OEPHIUS(op): 6:59pm On Jun 11, 2021 |
FG, South East leaders reiterate commitment to unity, stability of #Nigeria … Reject agitation for secession
A delegation from the Federal Government led by the Minister of Defence, Retired Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi, Governors of the five States of the South East and other leaders of political, religious and traditional institutions in the zone rose from a closed-door meeting on the security challenges confronting the region in particular and Nigeria in general, at the Government House, Enugu, reiterating their commitment to peace, unity and stability of the country.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, the Defence Minister, Magashi, disclosed that the delegation will relay the commitment reached at the parley and other outcomes of the consultation to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Defence Minister who was accompanied by his Interior Ministry counterpart and the Service Chiefs, explained that they were in Enugu for a consultative meeting with leaders of the South East zone on the issues of instability and criminality, at the instance of President Buhari.
He added that the meeting agreed that there were fundamental issues that need to be addressed in the South East region.
The leader of the Presidential delegation stated that one of the issues is the farmers/ herders conflict which, he said will “be given the necessary accord to stop this menace all over the country, from the perspective of national interest”.
Magashi revealed that the second issue they discussed was “the problem of marginalization”, stressing it “is well accepted and further discussion will continue after we have met with Mr. President to see their grievances and after the governors will articulate the grievances so that we can have further discussion on them”.
The Minister further disclosed that the delegation endorsed the Community Policing Model of the South East governors, adding that it “should be encouraged because we have set precedence in the Amotekun in the Western part of the country”.
His words: “We appreciate our discussions. We are most humbled and I think each one of us; the governors, the elders, the religious leaders were able to say one or two things.
“We would put our heads together to see that peace and stability of this nation are brought back to normalcy in no distance time.
“We are appealing to the media to report the positive side of government and encourage us to pursue legitimate ways in which we can bring peace and stability in this country”.
In an address at the meeting, the Governor of Ebonyi State and Chairman of South East Governors Forum, Engr. David Umahi, on behalf of the leaders of the zone, restated their commitment to national unity, saying that “this sincere commitment is a new dawn not only to South East but to entire Nigeria”.
Commenting on the ban on open grazing, Gov. Umahi said: “Just on a very minor specifics for the emphasis of our people, we discussed the issue of ban on open grazing and of course this delegation is in support of this ban on open grazing and we also informed the delegation that each of the South East states has laws in this respect”.
The South East Governors Forum Chairman noted that the commitment of the Federal Government towards addressing all the issues pertaining to herdsmen in the South East is very important.
He stated that the governors have agreed to articulate all the grievances and concerns of the people of the South East “as spelt out by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo”, saying: “We are happy that there is genuine willingness for further dialogue on such issues”.
Gov. Umahi maintained that Ebubeagu is the only recognized local security outfit in the South East, emphasizing that “no other security outfit is speaking for South East and this is the position of Ndigbo”.
According to him, “We are committed to one united Nigeria; we have always mentioned this; all our leaders are committed to this and that is why we read it everywhere, a united Nigeria of fairness, equity and equality of freedom and this we have further expressed.
“Those who dish out hate speeches from our region, threat of violence or secession do not speak for South East. I repeat, we the South East people are not for secession, we don’t support it; we don’t call for it.
“We condemn the killings of security men and innocent people in the South East and the governors are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our people. We are supporting the security agencies. We finally appeal to our people to continue to engage our youths to eschew violence”.
Earlier in his opening remark, #Governor Ifeanyi #Ugwuanyi of #Enugu State described the Town Hall meeting as timely and apt, expressing optimism that the outcome of the meeting will address the security challenges in the South East zone.
Gov. Ugwuanyi who stressed the need for all government structures to uphold the security and welfare of the people as the primary purpose of government (enshrined in the 1999 Constitution), said that the consultation with the Service Chiefs and critical stakeholders of the South East zone, on the current security challenges, “underscores the centrality of this security responsibility in our consideration”.
The Enugu State Governor thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for sending the Federal Government delegation to the South East to consult with the leaders of the zone.

Politics › Enugu State Lectures Students, Staff, Others On Fire Prevention Measures by OEPHIUS(op): 4:43am On Jun 11, 2021 |
…As State Chief Fire Officer lists Ugwuanyi’s giant strides in the sector
The administration of #Governor Ifeanyi #Ugwuanyi of #Enugu State has embarked on a sensitization campaign in schools aimed at educating students and staff on ways of preventing fire outbreak.
The campaign which is being organized by the State Fire Service was flagged off at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, yesterday, in collaboration with the management of the institution.
Speaking at the flag-off, the State Chief Fire Officer, Engr. Okwudiri Ohaa, disclosed that the campaign was in furtherance of Gov. Ugwuanyi administration’s zero fire outbreak programmes in Enugu State.
Engr. Ohaa pointed out that the governor’s war against fire outbreak is exceptional, adding that the essence of the programme was to educate the students and staff of IMT, Enugu “on the likely causes of fire, tips on how to prevent fire outbreak, and what to do in case the unfortunate incident occurs”.
The Chief Fire Officer, who highlighted the remarkable feats of Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration in the area of fire safety, stated that it established five new ultra-modern fire service stations across the three senatorial zones of the state after 56 years since the previous station was constructed.
He added that Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration recruited 66 firefighters to boost the workforce of the state fire service; procured five new Mini Fire Trucks with all the necessary equipment for the five newly constructed fire service stations; purchased five new Rapid Respond Firefighting Vehicles for the state fire service as well as construction of boreholes in the new fire service stations located at Orba, Ogurute, Oji River, Ozalla and Udi.
“In capacity building, His Excellency (Ugwuanyi) left no stone unturned as he sponsored the Chief Fire Officer for training abroad at Fire Service College Motern in Mash London, UK. In 2019, another five (5) fire officers were sponsored for a national fire conference in Ilorin, Kwara State.
“He (Ugwuanyi) is the leading Governor in Nigeria to have installed fire extinguishers of various types and sizes in over 24 major markets in his state and other fire prone locations.
“His Excellency broke records again in the history of Enugu State Fire Service, as he provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the safety of all firefighters in the state”.
In his speech, the Rector of IMT, Enugu, Prof. Austin Nweze explained that the training was part of the initiatives of the school management aimed at supporting the state government’s concerted efforts at tackling fire outbreaks for safety of lives and property of residents of the state.
Prof. Nweze applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for his administration’s steadfastness and sheer dexterity in managing and responding rapidly to incidents of fire outbreak in the state through various time-honoured interventions such as provision of the needed facilities and logistics for the effective operation of the establishment.
Delivering his lecture on causes of fire outbreak, a Fire Officer (FO1), Chika Ogbu advised the students and other participants to always pay attention to factors that may ignite fire and lead to inferno, stating that “Fire is a good servant but a dangerous master”.

Politics › Building Approval: Enugu Bars LGs From Collecting Development, Other Levies by OEPHIUS(op): 6:05am On Jun 09, 2021 |
Building Approval: ECTDA Bars LGs From Collecting Development, Empowerment Levies
The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, has barred the three municipal councils in Enugu capital city from the collection of assorted building levies.
This was contained in a notice issued to the affected councils by the ECTDA, where it declared that it had sole responsibility to collect such levy and that it was illegal for the councils to delve into it.
The levies include: Building approval and Due Process Compliance levy; Development levy, Site Maintenance levy; Youth Empowerment levy and Container permit.
The affected local government councils are Enugu North, Enugu South and Enugu East local government councils, all within the jurisdiction of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA.
Subsequently, the Authority has directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute defaulters and agents of the councils whom it accused of promoting double taxation and making lives miserable for developers and residents in the state capital.
In the Compliance Notice issued to the affected three local government councils, Chairman of ECTDA, Dr. Josef Onoh described Demand Notices of Building Approval served by the councils as illegal since the victims eventually come to ECTDA to make another payment.
“In line with the above listed illegal acts, we are compelled to put you in the know of the provisions of the law giving powers to the Authority to function within the capital territory.
“ECTDA laws of 2009 No.5 and Revised of 2014 gives the agency the sole responsibility to enforce compliance with appropriate standards in the Development of Enugu Capital City.
“These excessive and illegal actions by your staff contravenes and usurps the powers and functions of the Authority as provided in sections 16 (2) and (4) of ECTDA law. In view of the foregoing, all activities being carried out within the capital territory by agents parading in the form and style of (Youth Empowerment) in relation to infrastructural development and municipal services (which in itself tantamount to double taxation) is hereby banned with immediate effect,” Onoh directed the councils.
He stated that his agency would not allow anybody to undermine the efforts Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had put in place for the development and attraction of investments to the state and warned law breakers to beware.
He further charged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practice and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to prosecute any defaulting council chairman. https://dailypost.ng/2021/06/07/building-approval-ectda-bars-lgs-from-collecting-devt-empowerment-levies/

Crime › Brisk Investment Says Repayments Won't Be Made As Long As CEO Is Detained by OEPHIUS(op): 6:11am On May 27, 2021 |
Previous thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6570140/60-roi-dominic-joshua-ngeneBrisk Capital Investments has made it clear that Dominic Joshua's arrest by the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigerian Police, will make it near impossible to refund monies to investors who consider themselves duped. The 21-year-old Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Brisk Capital Limited has been accused of diverting over N2 billion in investor funds.
Police say Joshua promised investors high Return On Investments (ROI), went off the radar on pay days and splashed the cash on luxury wrist watches, fast cars and real estate instead.
Potential investors were told that with as low as N500,000, they could earn 30% every month plus their capital for at least 90 days.
"With the Brisk Business Investo, you can invest 60% of your intended business capital and get back 100% of it within 90 days.
"How about driving that car you want so bad just by investing 60% of the specific amount of your car choice? We would ensure that within 90 days, you get to drive the car of your choice with no stress at all," Joshua's firm promised on its website.
Following Joshua's arrest, Brisk Business said "given the circumstances, our hands are tied, our hearts are heavy but our commitment to making repayments is still the same.
"However, as long as our Managing Partner, Mr. Dominic Joshua is still in custody, we are unable to act on this commitment, as well as schedule the Zoom meeting which was to have him talk to you.
"Further petitions and arrests will only halt any progressive measures, delay repayments and negatively affect the wellbeing of staff and fellow investors."
Ebonyi-born Joshua, who operated from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, will be arraigned in court as soon as the strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) is called off, police say. https://www.pulse.ng/business/brisk-capital-says-as-long-as-ceo-joshua-is-in-police-custody-repayments-cant-be-made/yh36fd9.amp?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&__twitter_impression=true

“Fellow Nigerians, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I wish to assure you most sincerely, that the memoranda you have already submitted and those that may come forward arising from this hearing and all the deliberations and engagements that will come forth from them will be the lodestar of our work as a Committee”, he said.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues from Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hon. Ubosi urged the Senate Committee to fast-track the process so that the aim of the exercise will be achieved before the end of the present administration.
In his vote of thanks, Senator Ekweremadu, also applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi, who he described as “Insurance Guru”, for his immense contributions towards the hosting of the zonal public hearing in Enugu.

#Enugu govt rehabilitates intractable Etudo/Awkunanaw street
*Gov. #Ugwuanyi always pays certified works on time – Contractor
The Enugu State Ministry of #Works and #Infrastructure, in keeping with the directives of #Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has carried out the rehabilitation of the popular Etudo/Awkunanaw Street, Achara Layout, Enugu South Local Government Area, which was hitherto in a deplorable state.
Gov. Ugwuanyi had paid an unscheduled visit to the Etudo/Awkunanaw Street, about six weeks ago, prior to the rehabilitation of the road, to ascertain its true state for immediate intervention, and consequently directed the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to commence procurement for its reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Speaking during the governor’s visit, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, disclosed that the road was captured in the 2021 budget deliverables as one of the special intervention projects for urgent attention because of its socio-economic importance to residents of the area.
Engr. Nnaji, accompanied by the Deputy Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly and member representing Enugu South (Rural) Constituency, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Barr. Steve Oruruo, explained that the governor’s visit was in furtherance of his tour of project sites to ensure that the deliverables in the 2021 budget were met.
Addressing newsmen when he inspected the last lap of the road rehabilitation, on Monday, the Works Commissioner said that “this road is being completed in keeping with the governor’s directives and commitment to the wellbeing of the people of Enugu State as well as his administration’s start-to-finish policy”.
Engr. Nnaji added that other remedial works will be carried across other adjoining streets of Awkunanaw Street, stressing that he was at the site with the Honourable Members representing, Enugu South Rural and Urban constituencies, Rt. Hon. Onyinye Ugwu (Deputy Leader of the House) and Hon. Sam Ngene respectively and the governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Barr. Steve Oruruo, to ensure that due diligence and the standard specification were followed to the letter.
“This is in keeping with His Excellency’s policy on delivery of infrastructural projects in Enugu State and timely completion known as start-to-finish policy which means that when a project is started, it must be finished in record time”.
Also speaking, Barr. Oruruo pointed out that “this is the latest in the series of interventions by the state government, being marshaled by our proactive Governor of Enugu State through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.”
Noting that the road was “a vital project that touches the socio-economic lives of the ordinary people in the society, the Governor’s aide said: “You can attest to the proficiency and dexterity by which the job has been dispatched under six weeks in line with the ideology of the governor to mitigate the suffering of the masses”.
On her part, the Deputy Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Ugwu, thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his swift intervention in the road which she said was neglected by previous administrations for decades.
Hon. Ngene who was represented by Comrade Ugochukwu Nnaji, also expressed gratitude to the governor for rehabilitating the road which he said was within the ambit of his constituency.
He maintained that the people of the area are delighted that the hitherto deplorable road has been reconstructed for easy access, saying: “We are happy today; His Excellency is a promise keeper and has the ability to actualize projects within a limited time”.
Appreciating Gov. Ugwuanyi for sticking to due diligence and standard specification in road construction and other infrastructural developments, the Contractor handling the project, Ndubuisi Menakaya, equally applauded him for his commitment towards paying contractors for certified works done.
He revealed that “a lot of problem in Nigeria about failed and uncompleted projects is because certified works are not paid in some states but in Enugu State, His Excellency, the governor always pays his certified works on time”.

#Governor Ifeanyi #Ugwuanyi of #Enugu State, on Thursday, joined members and leadership of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to hold a one day mega prayer rally for peace and God’s urgent intervention in the security challenges confronting the country.
Declaring open the prayer rally, the state chairman of #CAN, Rev. Emmanuel Ositadimma Edeh, disclosed that the theme, “My Peace I Give Unto You”, was occasioned by “the prevailing circumstances of the day”, stating that “as Christians, we quickly remembered the words of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in John 14:27, which says “My Peace I Give Unto You”.
The CAN chairman stressed that “we need peace in our hearts, peace in our homes, peace in our communities, peace in all our seventeen (17) local government areas, peace in Enugu State, peace in the South East Zone, peace in our nation Nigeria and the whole world”.
Rev. Edeh appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi for his commitment to God, peace and all the support his administration has been giving the religious institutions in the state, including the successful hosting of the prayer rally.
In his congregational prayer, the Chaplain of Upper Room Ministries, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Dr. Tony Nnaji, called on the people of God to unite and rise to the prevailing challenges in the country by praying fervently and speaking with one voice, declaring that “God has given us victory”.
In their separate intercessory prayer sessions, the representatives of the five blocs of CAN in Enugu State prayed for “gratitude to God, forgiveness of sins, and against bloodshed and insecurity in Nigeria”. They also prayed for peace in Enugu State and Nigeria, the leaders of the country, and youths.
The CAN leadership unanimously commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for entrusting Enugu State to the hands of God, maintaining that the state has remained peaceful and secure because of the governor’s faith in God, commitment to the people’s wellbeing as well as his uncommon leadership style.
In his prayer session, Bishop Godwin Madu of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) thanked God for giving Gov. Ugwuanyi, “who trusts his faith in you”, the wisdom, character and leadership qualities to lead Enugu State on the path of peace and good governance.
Bishop Madu prayed for God’s protection on the people of Nigeria and called on Him to come and rescue Nigeria.
“Our Super Natural God, please rescue us from this bad situation of violence, killings, banditry and armed robbery in our dear country. We have faith that you will rescue and deliver Nigeria.
“It is no longer in the hands of the President, Governors, Army or other security agencies; it is you, God that will bring peace and security to Nigeria.
“In Enugu State, we thank you for our God fearing, peaceful and CAN loving Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, who is here today, for giving him the wisdom to worship you.
“He entrusted Enugu State to your hands and such wise decision has brought peace and good governance to our dear state.
“We also thank you, God, that our governor has always being the first to implement South East Governors’ noble decisions on peace and security, among others”.
In their remarks, the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma and the State Vice Chairman of CAN/Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo equally prayed for peace and security in the Enugu State, South East region and Nigeria, and beseeched God to give Gov. Ugwuanyi more wisdom and strength to continue to discharge his onerous responsibilities diligently, stressing that Enugu State will continue to be in the hands of God.
According to Bishop Obodo, “I wish to thank the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu), a man of peace, who since the inception of his administration has put Enugu State in the hands of God.
“Our governor is such a patient and God fearing leader. He left everything he was doing to be here to pray with us. We sincerely appreciate him”.
In his goodwill message, Gov. Ugwuanyi, through the State Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, endorsed the prayer rally, pointing out that the peace and security being enjoyed in Enugu State were among the cardinal policies of the present administration.
Aroh noted that it was because of the peace entrenched by Ugwuanyi that all the past governors of the state have and can come together to chart a new course for the progress of the state, stressing that “it has never happened before”.
The Commissioner added that the governor’s commitment to peace also led to the massive infrastructural transformation in the Judiciary for effective dispensation of justice, “because peace and justice connect”.
Aroh who highlighted some of the remarkable achievements of the Ugwuanyi administration in other spheres of development such as health, roads construction, security, workers’ welfare, etc, in spite of the nation’s economic challenges, said that “these things happened because of God and the existing peace in Enugu State”.

Previous Thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6559288/operation-restore-peace-enugu-launched#Security: IGP in #Enugu, launches 'Operation Restore Peace for South East'
…As Gov. #Ugwuanyi reiterates commitment to safe, secure environment for residents
The acting Inspector-General of #Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, on Tuesday, in Enugu, launched a special operation for the South East geo-political zone, known as “Operation Restore Peace (Operation RP)”, to stem the tide of violence and criminal activities in the zone.
Launching the operation, IGP Baba disclosed that the campaign was in compliance with the directive given to the Nigeria Police, by President Muhammadu #Buhari, to restore peace and security in the zone.
The Police Chief added that the President’s directive was not only for the South East but also across the nation, stressing that there is urgent need to secure lives and property of residents of the country.
The IGP maintained that “the Nigeria Police are determined to restore peace and order where they are threatened and protect the citizens from all forms of threats to their lives and property”.
He said that “the Operation RP in Enugu is the first in the line-up of our strategic plans to restore peace and order across the country” adding that “in the coming days, the special operation will be extended to other parts of the country to address the challenges of banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery”.
Appreciating the individual and collective efforts of the South East governors in supporting the police in their efforts to restore peace and strengthen national unity, the IGP expressed confidence that “the support of all the strategic stakeholders will in due course change the current narrative in the zone for good”.
Praying that “the Almighty God will restore peace across the South East and in our dear country”, the IGP thanked Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, for his administration's immeasurable support and cooperation to security agencies in the state.
In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi welcomed the IGP and other senior Police officers who accompanied him to Enugu State, for the remarkable event.
The governor who noted that the occasion could not have come at a better time than now “given the bourgeoning insecurity in the country”, expressed optimism that the exercise will herald the rejigging and re-tooling of the Internal Security Architecture in the South East geo-political zone to bring it up to speed with emerging dimensions of criminality.
“That expectation, in my judgment, seems more realizable with the reassuring presence of the Ag. Inspector-General of Police here today”, the governor said.
Stressing that his administration fully understands that the primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of the people, as enshrined in the Nigeria’s constitution, Gov. Ugwuanyi stated that “pursuant to this leadership responsibility, we have strengthened our Neighbourhood Watch Associations, established Enugu State Forest Guards, which was a novel initiative of the South East Governors’ Forum, and provided security patrol vehicles and communication gadgets to support the security agencies in our state”.
According to the governor, “We have institutionalized functional collaboration between our Neighbourhood Watch groups, Forest Guards and security agencies especially in the area of intelligence sharing.
“Enugu State Security Trust Fund Law is in place to ensure sustainable funding for security agencies in our state. The deployment of our Automated Drone Surveillance Solution to give the needed impetus to our security surveillance is underway.
“We have not rested on our oars in providing a safe and secure environment for residents to live, work and enjoy life”.
Stating that the Operation RP for the South East is timely and most compelling, Gov. Ugwuanyi congratulated the IGP and his team for the great initiative, and assured them of his administration’s unflinching co-operation and support.
The governors of Ebonyi, Imo and Abia states were represented by their deputies while their Anambra State counterpart was represented by CP Ikechukwu Ayo Aduba (Rtd).
The Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistant Inspectors General of Police, Commissioner of Police of various states, Heads of other Security Agencies, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Enugu State, Prof. Malachy Okwueze, other EXCO members and HRH Igwe Emma Ugwu of Ibagwa Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, were also among the dignitaries at the event.

Politics › Southern Governors Ban Open Grazing, Call For National Dialogue by OEPHIUS(op): 5:36pm On May 11, 2021 |
#Southern #Nigeria #Governors ban open grazing of cattle across the three regions, call on Federal Government to convoke a national dialogue as a matter of urgency... Read the Communiqué issued at the end of their meeting held at Delta State Government House, Asaba, on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, for details. #EnuguStateIsInTheHandsOfGod #amokelouis ASABA- Southern Governors Forum (SGF), has yesterday resolved on immediate ban of open grazing across the Southern part of Nigeria as they requested for a national dialogue on restructuring.
The meeting which was held yesterday in Asaba had in attendance 15 Governors from South- West, South-East, South- South, including two Deputy Governors from Imo and Akwa Ibom State while two others Governors of Cross Rivers and Osun State were absent.
Reading the 12 point communique on behalf of the 17 Governors after a closed door meeting in Asaba, Chairman of Southern Governors Forum, Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu urged the President to address the Nation over the Insecurity challenge in view to regain trust of the people.
“It is observed that the incursion of armed robbers, criminals and bandits into Southern part of the country has presented a severe security challenge such that citizens are not able to love their normal lives”.
They consequently resolved against open grazing or cattle in the Southern Nigeria as they called on Federal Government to develop alternative and modern livestock management systems.
“We noted that development and population growth has put pressure on available land and increased the prospects of conflict between migrating herders and local population in the South. Give this scenario, it becomes imperative to enforce the ban on open grazing in the South ( including cattle movement to the South by foot)”.
While attributing the current agitation among several quarter of the country to greater need for inclusiveness in governance, they stressed the urgent need for national dialogue.
“The progress of the nation requires that urgent and bold steps be taken to restructure the Nigeria Federation leading to evolution of state police, review of revenue allocation formula in favor of the sub -national government and creation of other institutions which legitimately advance our commitment to the true practice of federalism”.
Hence, they expressed concern on the economic implications of another lockdown on the country.
“We suggest greater coordination and cooperation between Federal and State Governments in evolving strategies for dealing with the pandemic.” https://independent.ng/southern-governors-demand-national-dialogue-restructuring-refuse-open-grazing/

#MayDay 2021: Jubilant #Enugu workers hail #Ugwuanyi's commitment to welfare
*Governor salutes their patience, dedication to duty
…Says the priceless #peace we enjoy underlies our governance accomplishments
Jubilant workers of Enugu State, on the platform of the organized labour, have commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his administration’s laudable projects and programmes aimed at improving their living standard and that of the entire people of the state.
The workers who spoke, through the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Virginus Nwobodo and his Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Benneth Asogwa, during the occasion of this year’s May Day celebration, held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi, who was present at the annual event, for his unequalled resilience in the approval and payment of the new N30,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustment to the state workers.
They also appreciated the governor for the sustenance of payment of salaries on or before 23rd of every month, other welfare packages, as well as numerous development projects across the state, in spite of the state’s lean resources and “even when the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic was severe".
In his speech, NLC State Chairman, Comrade Nwobodo, disclosed that “it is crystal clear that workers of Enugu State have never had it so good since the present democracy, as it is since the inception of the present administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi”.
Describing Ugwuanyi as “the most labour-friendly governor in Nigeria”, Comrade Nwobodo thanked the governor, on behalf of the workers, for “regular and prompt payment of workers’ salaries, pensions and other allowances notwithstanding the high level of wage bill occasioned by the new minimum wage”.
On his part, the Chairman of TUC in Enugu State, Comrade Asogwa, said that Gov. Ugwuanyi, through the peaceful implementation of the new N30,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustment “has broken the long history of industrial unrest, intimidation and neglect that heralded the previous minimum wage implementation in the state”.
Comrade Asogwa also commended the governor for regular payment of the 13th month salary bonus to state workers from 2015 (except for 2020 pandemic year), safety of lives and property, and the peaceful co-existence of Enugu State people, irrespective of their political, social or religious affiliations.
The labour leader equally lauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for the ongoing simultaneous construction of two ultra-modern secretariat buildings for the state chapters of the NLC and TUC, by his administration, stressing that “this further portrays the present government as an all inclusive one that embraces every group and individuals as partners in governance”.
Pointing out that “His Excellency has written his name in gold on the history of labour movement in Enugu State and posterity will never play down on the legacy of your kindness and magnanimity to the workers”, Comrade Asogwa went further to commend the governor for “massive road construction, especially in the rural communities; transformation of the state-owned health facilities, particularly the building of a world class infectious disease control center in the former Colliery Hospital Enugu, and unparalleled environmental cleanliness in the major cities of Enugu State.
The labour leader added that “the recruitment of youths for the cleaning exercise and traffic control has also provided and is still providing a huge employment opportunity for the young ones”.
Speaking further, the NLC Chairman, Comrade Nwobodo, stressed that the workers are grateful to Gov. Ugwuanyi for the “constitution of new Board for the Enugu State Water Corporation and the ongoing recruitment of workers by the corporation to add new life to the establishment and ensure youth engagement into meaningful activities; ongoing promotion exercise for workers who are due for promotion; ongoing construction of the first of its kind flyover at the ever-busy T-junction Abakpa Nike, Enugu; and the health care service delivery to the aged population of Enugu State”, among others.
“Your Excellency, workers of Enugu State are not only happy with your labour-friendly disposition, we celebrate your prudency in the management of the meager resource accruals to Enugu State. The workers are also invited to ensure that they reciprocate the government’s kind gestures by being committed to duties and always showing the right attitude to work”, he said.
Addressing the visibly elated workers, Gov. Ugwuanyi extended his warm felicitations, wishing them “happy ‘Workers’ Day’ from the Government and good people of Enugu State”.
The governor noted that the state’s public servants have, over the years, “remained a critical success factor in our good governance and optimal service delivery”, adding that “they have operationalized our policies in government and weathered the storms of fluctuating economic conditions”.
He said that the state in particular is blessed with a well-motivated, committed and robust workforce with outstanding pragmatic disposition to the ever-changing demands of the Public Service.
Stressing that the workers have demonstrated legendary patience, resilience and unequivocal commitment to the service delivery goals of his administration, Gov. Ugwuanyi revealed that “a day like this, is therefore, an occasion to say thank you to the great Workers of Enugu State: the organized labour comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)”.
According to him, “I must necessarily commend the leadership of these Labour Unions in the State for their selfless and focused leadership which has engendered the famed industrial peace in Enugu State.
“The peace we have is priceless and underlies our accomplishments in governance.
“Our administration has consistently paid workers emoluments on the 23rd day of every month. We have timeously promoted our workers and have sustained capacity improvement trainings for them.
“We have implemented the new minimum wage with its consequential adjustment and continually elevated service delivery standards through our Service Improvement Bureau. Our workers are truly deserving of every encouragement that we can afford.
“I dare say, that you are our most valued resource and we reassure you of our care and support all the way. Finally, I wish you a very memorable “Workers Day” celebration”.
