From his tone of voice, it was a clear threat to take over the state not through the ballot box, nor in respect for the will of the people of Abia State, but through rigging, killing, maiming, voter suppression, intimidation, electoral banditry

PoliticsPublish Contractual Details Of Lagos-calabar Coastal Highway, Atiku Tells FG by Ofunaofu(op): 3:30am On Oct 17, 2025
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has asked the federal government to publish the full contractual details, including financing terms and counterpart obligations of Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project.

He also said the project should be subjected to an independent value-for-money audit while further payments are suspended until Nigerians are assured it genuinely serves national interest.

Atiku stated this while stressing that he has been vindicated over the admittance by the minister of Works, David Umahi, that the actual cost is indeed closer to N8 billion per kilometre.

According to a statement by Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the minister had, in 2024, had countered Atiku’s disclosure that the project came at a cost of N8 billion per kilometre.

When the Tinubu administration unveiled the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar raised the alarm that the project’s cost was inflated to an outrageous N8 billion per kilometre.

“At the time, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, dismissed the claim, insisting in a 2024 interview that: ‘You will find out that our cost is N4 billion instead of the N8 billion claimed by the former Vice President.’

“However, the same minister has now done a volte face and admitted that the actual cost is indeed closer to N8 billion per kilometre — precisely what Atiku warned Nigerians about.

“This admission not only vindicates the former Vice President’s position but also exposes the Tinubu administration’s lack of transparency in managing one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s history.”

Atiku said he had earlier questioned both the cost structure and financing model of the coastal highway, describing it as opaque, inflated, and suspiciously designed to benefit vested interests rather than the Nigerian people.

“Now, even by the Minister’s own account, the Federal Government’s commitment is only 15%–30% of the total project cost, meaning the bulk of the estimated $11 billion would supposedly be sourced by the contractor. This raises fundamental questions: Who are the actual financiers? What sovereign guarantees underpin this arrangement? How did a project initially presented as cost-efficient balloon to Atiku’s projected figure?

“This development reinforces Atiku Abubakar’s consistent call for due process, competitive bidding, and transparency in all major public projects.

Nigerians deserve openness, not contradictions and concealed deals.

“Once again, Atiku has proven himself a statesman who speaks truth to power — not out of politics, but out of patriotism. He understands that every inflated contract represents theft from the Nigerian people.

We, therefore, call on the Tinubu administration to: Publish the full contractual details, including financing terms and counterpart obligations;

“Subject the project to an independent value-for-money audit; and Suspend further payments until Nigerians are assured that the project genuinely serves national interest.

“The Nigerian people are watching — and history, yet again, has vindicated Atiku Abubakar,” the statement said.

PoliticsMeeting Disruptions: ADC, SDP Police In Court, Get ₦15 Million Compensation by Ofunaofu(op): 4:20am On Oct 16, 2025
........ Get N15m Compensation

A High Court sitting in Kaduna, on Wednesday, awarded the sum of N15 million against the Kaduna State Police Command as damages for disrupting the August 30, 2025 and September 4, 2025 meetings of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kaduna State, respectively.

The court, presided over by Hon. Murtala J. Zubairu, also granted a perpetual injunction restraining the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, his officers and privies from interfering with lawful political gatherings of the defendants/counter claimants.

It would be recalled that two meetings involving a former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and other chieftains of the ADC and SDP in the State were truncated first on the August 30, 2025, by suspected hired thugs in the presence of police officers and then by Policemen on the September 4, 2025.

According to the Police, their action was based on an Exparte Order obtained in the suit marked KDH/KAD/NPD/1315/2025 between the Commissioner of Police Vs. ADC and SDP.

However, delivering judgement on the suit after reviewing all the facts and submissions of counsels to both the plantiffs and Respondents, the court not only dismissed the suit instituted by the Police “for being incompetent and constituting an abuse of court process” but upheld the prayers of the defendants/counter claimants.

The court directed as follows, “A declaration is granted that the Applicant’s failure to investigate the complaints in Exhibits A2 and A3 and their subsequent action to
suspend/prohibit the Counter-Claimant’s lawful assemblies constitutes a breach of statutory duty under Sections 4, 83, and 84 of the Police Act 2020.

“A declaration is granted that the ex parte interim injunction granted by this Honourable Court on September 4, 2025, and the reliefs sought in the Originating Summons, infringed the Counter-Claimant’s fundamental rights to freedom of assembly and association under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), without justifiable derogation under Section 45 (1).

“A declaration is granted that the Applicant’s actions, including the application for a blanket prohibition of all political assemblies in the State based on unverified intelligence, amount to selective enforcement and an abuse of process.

“An Order is hereby granted discharging the ex parte interim injunction granted on September 4, 2025, for procedural irregularities and lack of merit.

“An Order of perpetual injunction is hereby granted restraining the Applicant (Commissioner of police, Kaduna State), his officers, agents, or privies from further interfering with the Counter
Claimant’s lawful political activities, including meetings, rallies, and assemblies, without due process of law.

“An order is granted directing the Applicant to promptly investigate the complaints lodged by the Respondents (Exhibits A2 and A3) and the alleged violence of August 30, 2025, and provide a report to the Attorney-General of
Kaduna State for necessary action within 60 days from the date of this judgment.

The evidence before this court shows a clear abdication of duty by the Applicant. Rather than protect the victims of the August 30 incident, the police sought judicial cover to curtail their rights. This is unacceptable in a constitutional democracy.”

In his orders, the court declared that the police breached their statutory duty under Sections 4, 83, and 84 of the Police Act 2020, which mandate the force to provide adequate security for assemblies and processions.

Justice Zubairu also voided the ex-parte interim injunction earlier obtained by the police on September 4, 2025, on the ground that it was issued without the mandatory undertaking as to damages, contrary to the Supreme Court’s decision in Kotoye v CBN (1989).

He held that, “The ex parte order obtained without the required undertaking is irregular, oppressive, and contrary to law. The resulting injury to the respondents must be compensated.”

PoliticsHardship Will Soon Be Over, Shettima Assures Nigerians by Ofunaofu(op): 9:19pm On Oct 14, 2025
Vice President Kashim Ibrahim Shettima has assured Nigerians that their economic pain will soon be over as the country is entering into a new phase of economic prosperity.

Speaking during the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) on Tuesday in Abuja, Shettima said President Bola Ahmed’s heart is with Nigerians and currently feel their pains.

“The president’s heart goes out to the pains that Nigerians are experiencing, but be reassured that we have crossed the Rubicon and we are on a path to sustaining growth and blessings.”

Daily Trust reports that the event was organised by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to seek investments in local production of renewable products.

The vice president stated that the event is an invitation to establish Nigeria as a hub for renewable energy manufacturing in Africa and Nigeria’s energy transition presents an investment opportunity of over $410bn between now and 2060.

He stated, “Of this, more than N23bn is required to expand energy access and connect the millions of Nigerians who still live in energy poverty. But beyond access lies our grander ambition, which is to deliver a power system capable of 277 gigawatts of total installed capacity by 2060. This ambition demands more than investment, it demands innovation, local capacity, and commitment.

“That is why the theme of this year’s forum, Implementing the Nigeria First Policy, Facilitating Local Content Development and Manufacturing in the Renewable Energy Ecosystem, is not only timely but indeed essential. Our commitment to a Nigeria-based industrial strategy calls on us to anchor the future of Africa’s renewable energy supply chains right here at home.”

He added that under the forum, more than $400 million in new investment commitments have been mobilised into Nigeria’s renewable energy manufacturing value chain.

“This includes solar panels, smart metres, battery storage, and recycling facilities. These investments are projected to create over 1,500 direct jobs across multiple states and reflect growing global confidence in Nigeria’s clean energy industrialisation drive. I am convinced that each of us gathered here is determined to ensure that the outcomes of this forum do not end in communiques but are translated into factories, jobs, electrified schools, thriving rural enterprises, and resilient communities powered by clean energy. That is the true test of our resolve.”

On his part, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the NRIP 2025 isn’t just another event but a declaration that Nigeria is ready to lead Africa’s renewable energy transformation.

“This year’s theme, Implementing the Nigeria First Policy, speaks to something far deeper than manufacturing. It embodies a bold commitment to national pride, industrial competence, and long-term economic sustainability.

“In the power sector, the Nigeria First Policy reflects a determination to ensure that the next generation of clean energy technologies, from solar panels to battery energy storage systems, deployed across the country, proudly carry the label, Made in Nigeria.”

EducationStrike: We Won’t Be Intimidated By No-Work-No-Pay Threat - ASUU by Ofunaofu(op): 9:47pm On Oct 13, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has dismissed the Federal Government’s ‘No Work, No Pay’ directive, insisting that the union will not be intimidated by threats.

ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, stated this on Monday while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s current affairs programme ‘Politics Today.’

He said the union remained united and would not succumb to what he described as the government’s attempt to divide the academic community.

“We don’t respond to threats, and nobody can threaten us,” Piwuna said.

Piwuna maintained that all academic bodies, such as the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), were standing together in support of the strike action.

“He is threatening us, writing to NAMDA and CONUA, telling them they can get their salaries. He wants to divide us, but we are united in this matter.

“CONUA is with us, NAMDA is with us, SSANU is with us, NASU is with us. The polytechnics and colleges of education are also with us,” he said.

The ASUU President advised the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, to focus on resolving the ongoing dispute instead of issuing threats.

“He has got something coming. He had better sit down and solve this problem or he will fail in trying to divide us,” Piwuna added.

Piwuna also hinted that the union remained open to dialogue and was ready to engage with the Federal Government.

“Today, I received a call from the Minister of State for Labour. She said she has been directed to intervene and get this matter resolved. ASUU is willing. We are ready and available to discuss this matter once and for all,” the ASUU president added.

PoliticsAiling Finance Minister Edun Not Flown Abroad, Recovering In Abuja’ — Presidency by Ofunaofu(op): 6:00pm On Oct 13, 2025
The Presidency has dismissed reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu was planning to replace the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, following his recent illness.

According to the PunchOnline, multiple sources within the Presidential Villa confirmed on Sunday that Edun, 69, was recuperating at his residence in Abuja and being attended to by Nigerian doctors.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke,” a senior official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly.

“As I’m talking to you, he’s in his house. He has not been flown anywhere. Of course, he might seek medical attention elsewhere if the doctors say it is necessary. So, it’s not true that he has a stroke,” the source clarified.

Another official confirmed that while the minister’s condition was being closely monitored, there was no plans by the President to name a replacement.

“He’s being attended to by Nigerian doctors. They’re still monitoring him. If he needs medical care outside Nigeria, he will go. But he’s still at home,” the source said. “There are no plans to replace him.”

Cardoso Reaffirms ‘Stability First, Then Growth’ Approach At London Business School Dialogue
Corroborating the reports, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, also confirmed that the minister was recuperating in Nigeria.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga said on Sunday evening.

Speculation about Edun’s health had intensified following reports by by an online newspaper claiming that President Tinubu was considering appointing a replacement due to the minister’s ill-health.

On Sunday, the Presidency announced that Edun would not be attending this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., and that the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, would lead Nigeria’s delegation instead.

The meetings, which brings together finance ministers, central bankers, and global economic experts, are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 13.

Appointed on August 28, 2023, Edun has been a key figure in President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, spearheading efforts to stabilise the naira, curb inflation, and attract foreign investment.

Before joining the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Edun served as Commissioner for Finance under Tinubu’s administration as Lagos State governor between 1999 and 2004.

PoliticsBREAKING: FG Enforces No-work-no-pay On Striking ASUU Members by Ofunaofu(op): 1:49pm On Oct 13, 2025
The Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors of federal universities across the country to strictly enforce the “no work, no pay” policy against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities currently participating in the ongoing nationwide strike.

The directive was contained in a circular dated October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, seen by PUNCH Online.

The circular was copied to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Permanent Secretary of Education, Pro-Chancellors of all federal universities, Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Executive Secretary of the NUC.

According to the circular, the Federal Ministry of Education expressed dissatisfaction over reports of the continued industrial action by ASUU despite repeated calls for dialogue, stressing that government would no longer tolerate non-compliance with extant labour laws.

“In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her official duties during the period of strike action,” the circular reads.

The minister directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities to immediately conduct a roll call and physical headcount of all academic staff in their institutions.

He also instructed them to submit a comprehensive report indicating staff members who are present and performing their official duties, and those absent or participating in the strike.

Alausa further directed that salary payment for the period of work stoppage be withheld from those who fail to perform their duties.

He clarified that members of the Congress of University Academics and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics, who are not part of the strike, are exempted from the directive and will not face any salary deductions.

The minister also tasked the National Universities Commission to monitor compliance with the directive and submit a consolidated report to the ministry within seven days of receiving the circular.

“Please, treat this matter with utmost urgency and a deep sense of responsibility in national interest,” Alausa urged the university heads.

PUNCH Online earlier reported that the federal government had threatened to enforce the policy amid the ongoing nationwide strike by the lecturers.

The lecturers on Sunday declared a total and comprehensive warning strike starting from Monday, October 13.

ASUU is currently demanding the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, the release of the withheld three and a half months’ salaries, sustainable funding of public universities, revitalisation of public universities, and cessation of the victimisation of lecturers in LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.

Others are payment of outstanding 25-35% salary arrears, payment of promotion arrears for over four years and release of withheld third-party deductions (cooperative contributions, union check-off dues).
