AutoElectNG:
Thanks for the validation.

I have switched many vehicles from 20W50 to 5W30 without incident.

YMMV.

Before I recommend a position, I have taken my time to analyze authorities on the matter and take a reasoned and informed stand as opposed to an emotional or spur of the moment view. I am also willing to explain how I arrived at my decision,it gives me a chance to let someone poke holes in them if such exist which I did not see, giving me yet another chance to bow to superior wisdom, if it exists.

If I take a reasoned stand that turns out to be faulty, I will also retract and provide reasons for the change.

That is my promise.
atleast now we have a real life situation...
so why do some experts scare people away about changing from 20w50 to 5w30/40?

yea but in my personal opinion, i think kerosene evaporate quicker than diesel. So i went with kerosene to avoid a quick oil change. My thinking might be wrong but its been two months i have been running that engine without any issue. If i am to do that again, i will use a mix of ATF and engine oil. Right now my internal is clean so i do not need diesel or kero anymore
If Kerosene.. wats d quantity of Kerosene to the engine oil.
If diesel whats the quantity of diesel to engine oil?

abro.

If you wish to go my route, make sure you put an eye on your oil pressure light. Do not exceed 10min of idle. I did not go more than 7min. Then open the drain hole to drain the oil. You will be shocked the amount of black oil that will come out of your engine.
chai I really hope person can get original.

True story

When it was obvious i needed a vehicle to move from point A to B, I bought a toyota corona/avensis, car came with 2.0 3SFE engine. Kazeem spoilt it while changing head gasket so i have less to lose. so while racing on kd road, i killed the engine racing a more powerful car than mine.

Sourced for a good 3SFE but couldnt get a direct one for that year.. Had to be more adventurous, i installed a 5SFE with a 5S ECU. I took my time to match the wiring harness of a 3S to a 5S engine and ECU

New engine runs poorly, low Mile per gallon due to defective MAP sensor and sludge in the engine. Change the MAP sensor.

To clean the sludge, I bought 2 liter of KEROSENE removed 1ltr of engine oil from the engine.

Poured the kerosene in the engine and run it for 10min.

Removed the whole oil and changed the filter. put in new oil and new filter, Then for safety reason to avoid leaking seals due to kerosene (from childhood i know the effect of kerosene on rubber) i put some oil treatment.

Bought new PCv (positive crank case ventilator/valve and installed) To help vent the crankcase and prevent sludge buildup.

Engine runs fine, smooth and its fuel efficient. I get close to 700km on a single tank of fuel right now.
hmmmm.... pls wat "oil treatment" did U use?

... the machines, the starters, everything is now ready. What was now left was to install them, do electrical wirings and connect everything to source of power and then test run the factory. I did that too.

hahahaha, I remember one funny thing that happened. I hired a local electrician to come assist me in the wiring. When we starter laying the cables, the guy kept complaining that what I was doing was wrong. I just instructed him to do as I told him. At a point the dude wanted to leave the job, but since I was going to pay him, he stayed till we completed the job. He was just complaining that everything will blow up. He insisted I pay him before I test the wiring. So I paid him and he ran away. He didn't want to witness the catastrophic blowup that will happen. hahahahahaha. I tested my thing and everything worked well. I was happy my factory was set for operation. So what was this guy's fear? This electrician is not used to industrial wiring where you have to take three live lines (three phase) into the machines. He is just good at domestic wiring, one live and neutral. lol. Me too, I never knew that there is a kind of wiring where you will have to take three live lines into a machine. During the period of my IT back in 2009, I took out time to go learn electrical installation. We did surface and conduit wiring of buildings and never did this three phase wiring before i went back to school. I learnt the three phase wiring in my previous place of work and then subsequent soap factories I visited. In my previous place of work (a pharmaceutical firm), the Engr was a difficult person. when there is fault, especially an electrical one, he won't come to fix it. If you shout at him, he will shutdown the factory. If you hand him a sack letter, the MD will wage in and ask you if you will be able to get another Engr that can take what he is being paid and do the job he is doing. He only went to a technical school, i don't even know if he has an SSCE. He always complained that he is under paid, but who is not under paid in the firm? I was the Manager but I couldn't deal with this Engr. The Engr was literarily controlling the MD somehow. So I decided to sideline him in my duty and that turned to be a blessing in disguise. When it was time for maintenance or there is fault that needs an Engr, I will report straight to the MD and an external Engr will be contracted. Engrs usually come down from Lagos every two weeks to do maintenance and repair works but our own Engr wouldn't want to work with this contract Engrs to learn, even if it is just maintenance work. So I took it upon myself to always stay around and watch those Engrs any time they were around. I followed them up, asked questions and jotted down things. At my free time, I usually go back to study what they did, follow the electrical lines, check the replaced mechanical parts, dismantle and reassemble machines just to understand their working principles. After about two months, I took over every maintenance and repair works in the firm. After about another month, our MD called the supervisor to inquire why we haven't had the need to call in a contract Engr. She told him that I was now doing the maintenance and repair myself. The MD was astonished. He was like, he is doing the electrical and mechanical... and the supervisor was like; everything, I mean everything Sir! The next day my MD personally handed the Engr his sack letter. So the stubbornness of our Engr offered me the opportunity to learn the rudiments of industrial wiring and also learn the working principles behind every machine we had.

Today I am using every skill I learnt to my own advantage. Try to learn anything you can, even if it means learning just to do other people's job. You may need the skills tomorrow.

Picture : electrical wiring ongoing
i have truly learnt from this. thanks much for sharing bro...

GAZZUZZ:
your engine will burn 5w30 engine oil (for sure) the aim of using the oil, is essentially for its cleaning agents. You will still have to go back to 20w50.

Meanwhile you are yet to solve the cause of the sludge,
because it will come back if it is not fixed.
based n enquiry from the owner... use of low quality engine oil and long overdue periods of engine service r d onli things. apart from that, nothing else stands out. owner claims vehicle has been in perfect condition until recently.

boss are there any other causes of sludge?

Read up this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/226911-sludge-remedies-3.html It may be possible to overcome sludge without tearing apart the engine
tnx bro... m on it

gone tru it bro... i realise majority suggested going slow... by switching to synthetic oil like Gazzuzz suggested and doing a frequent oil change... i think dts d option i will take.

in line with this guys hope there wnt be any side effects switching from 20w50 (non synthetic oil) to 5w-30(synthetic oil)?

Use engine flush. It will remove the sludge and then use 5w30 SJ engine oil. Look for it and if you cant get it, upgrade to API SN 5w30. Gazzuzz will still chop for the money as he will sell you the oil. If he is still doing shakara, get in touch with me and I will buy it from him and add my commission. I sell good engine flush too. One from Holts UK. It looks like engine oil but very good and the other is from the US, Jensen, big and very powerful. They all work for 5 mins and you are good to go
how much for the oil flush sir?
or gimme ur contact details so I PM U for d details...

nah latter I see this one.

do shorter oil changes, with mobil 1 5w30, 2,000 miles max, it will de-sludge engine very rapidly.
