ECOWAS leaders have directed immediate activation of the use of force against the Niger Republic military junta. They have also called on the African Union, AU, partner countries and institutions to support the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.


ECOWAS says all efforts made to dialogue with Niger Republic military junta have been defiantly rejected by coup leaders as they condemn continuous detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

The resolution by ECOWAS leaders was reached at the Extra-ordinary Summit on Political situation in Niger Republic attended by eight leaders of member-countries and Foreign Ministers of Liberia and the Gambia ends in Abuja.


President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and his Burundian counterpart, Everiste Ndayishimiye attended second ECOWAS extra-ordinary summit on Niger Republic on invitation of their colleagues.

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, said Value Added Tax (VAT) should be suspended on diesel to cushion the economic impact of the removal of fuel subsidy.

Oyedele stated this while on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily breakfast programme on Wednesday.

He said, “What the President wants us to do is that within the first 30 days, there are those low-hanging fruits that people have generally agreed that this is a problem but nobody has done anything about it.


“Personally, for example, this is not promising that it would be done. I think that we should suspend VAT on diesel because we removed fuel subsidy on petrol and prices are going up.

“We are going to table it before the committee. These are the things we want to do in the first 30 days.”

Oyedele, a former Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), within the next six months, said the committee will actualise critical tax reforms, rewrite and harmonise tax laws, issue executive orders, roll out regulations, amongst others.

He said the committee, which was inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja, has one year for the implementation of its policies but noted that the 30 days, six months and one year periods run concurrently.

Oyedele added that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is best suited to collect revenue for ministries, department and agencies.

He said the presidential committee would look into excess bank charges, adding that businesses pay as high as 65 to 70 levies and taxes but the committee’s plan is to reduce the number of taxes to about 10.

“It’s a competition. We need to ban binance and the only way to do so is if you have liquidity.”

The Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) has urged the federal government to ban binance operation in the country.

Binance is an online exchange where users can trade cryptocurrencies. It supports hundreds of the most commonly traded cryptocurrencies.

According to him, Binance is one of many factors putting pressure on the naira.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria had in June, issued a statement emphasising that Binance Nigeria was not registered or regulated by SEC, making its operations illegal.

Mr Gwadabe said, “If you know about Binance, you will know that binance trading is becoming the anchorage of both the investors and exporters window and the parallel market, which is unfortunate. So, we have to do something that can stop binance. It’s a competition. We need to ban binance and the only way to do so is if you have liquidity.”

He stressed, “As I speak, binance is the most liquid market. They do 1.2 million transactions per second. So it’s a very liquid market but that is not a scary status, we can break it through our local content and peculiarities.”

The ABCON president noted that optimism was giving way to pessimism in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

Mr Gwadabe pointed out that when pessimism overrode the psychology of the market, it would lead to loss of confidence.

“So we are seeing a scenario where optimism is giving way to pessimism. Investors are not coming. Nigerians don’t have confidence in the market and we have to look for external finances that are coming in as a quick fix,” He suggested.

No fewer than 79 schools in the Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State have only one teacher each, teaching all subjects.

The Director, School Services, Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board, Korijo Umar, disclosed this while answering questions from journalists during a media chat organised by the United Nations Children Fund on the enrollment drive of out-of-school children in Misau and Alkaleri LGAs.

Speaking at the Central Primary School, Misau LGA, Usman said many schools in the LGA and across the state have inadequate teachers.

“In Misau, there are 79 schools that have only one teacher each, while there are zero schools with no teacher. All the schools have teachers, except that they are not adequate.

“Misau is even better compared to others. Go to some other schools and see the situation there. So, what we do is find out where they are congested, and we ask them to redeploy and post them to other places. And that is what we told them from SUBEB: if they see a school with many teachers, they should move to two or three other schools, depending on the number there.

“If you go to the Bauchi metropolis, you’ll see that there are classes with even 150 or 200, even 220 and 250 pupils with only a teacher.”

When asked what SUBEB was doing to address the problem, Umar said, “SUBEB does not employ teachers. What we do is only post teachers to schools. The Teachers Service Commission is saddled with the responsibility of employing teachers in collaboration with SUBEB.”

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Bankole Oginni following the death of a woman who was said to be his ex-lover.

According to the police, the 45-year-old woman, (whose identity had not been revealed by the police) was found dead in the house of the suspect while some parts of her body had been removed.

The police added that it was the daughter of the deceased that reported the matter, after seeing the lifeless body of her mother tied down with a rope and some parts of her body removed in the suspect’s house located in the Oke Aro area of Akure, the state capital, on Sunday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami who confirmed the incident, stated that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at a hospital morgue while the investigation had commenced.

She said, “A lady reported at the station that her mother’s ex-lover Bankole Oginni called and invited her (deceased) over to his place in the Oke Aro area of Akure and after she left for his house, she did not return and her phone was switched off.

“She traced her mother to the house, only to find her lifeless body in the room of the ex-lover, her legs and hands tied and her body opened with intestines removed.

Also, there were patches on her (the deceased) body that shows signs of hot water burns.

“Suspect who claimed to be a footballer is already in our custody while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue.”
