PoliticsPresidential Tribunal Extends Pdp’s Time For Petition by ogododo(op): 2:10pm On Jun 20, 2023
The Presidential Election Petitions Court has extended the days for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar to present its case by two days.

The five-member panel of justices presided by Justice Haruna Tsammani agreed to extend the time after counsel to the PDP, Chris Uche (SAN), informed the court of the need to extend their time.

He reminded the court that although their presentation would have ended on Tuesday, June 20, but two days were removed, including the June 12 the Democracy Day.

“We have agreed that the time be adjusted to tomorrow, and possibly, Thursday be included yo enable us conclude our petition,” he said.

Lawyers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not oppose the application to extend the hearing to Thursday, June 23.

Counsel to INEC, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) suggested the respondents could open their defence after the Sallah holidays.

Earlier, Uche tendered 14 batches of voters’ register for the FCT, but couldn’t tender the forms EC8As from states of the federation due to improper scheduling.

Uche attributed this to the attitude of INEC to deny the petitioners documents requested.

On a lighter note, he suggested a legislation that compels INEC to bring all materials used in the conduct of the election to the court five days after the election.

The justices said there are disputes over elections even in the USA with Donald Trump accusing Joe Biden of rigging.

Finally, the justices advised Uche to take the recommendation to the proper forum.

The Federal Government, on Monday, confirmed that it had commenced the implementation of the payment of 7.5 per cent Value Added Tax on Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel.

Officials of the Nigeria Customs Service and Federal Inland Revenue Service confirmed this in Abuja, stressing that AGO was not exempted from the payment of VAT based on the VAT Modification Order 2021.

The development was, however, condemned by Nigerians, who pointed out that citizens were still trying to adjust to the hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, not knowing that plans had been perfected to further raise payments for diesel.

When asked by our correspondent if the NCS was now collecting 7.5 per cent VAT on the imports of AGO, the spokesperson for the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, replied, “Yes.”

He continued, “If you ask me whether Customs collect 7.5 per cent VAT on AGO, I will tell you yes and I’ll give you the reasons. There’s what we call VAT Modification Order 2021, which exempts petroleum products of Harmonised System Codes.

“But the HS Codes for Petroleum products that are exempted from paying VAT are those in the region of 2709.00.00.00 – 2710.19.12.00. The HS Codes are what we use to classify commod

FoodGuinness World Records Certifies Hilda Baci's Longest Cooking Marathon Record by ogododo(op): 10:58am On Jun 13, 2023

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Rle-AZgdSI

Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday 11 May and continued through to Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.

As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt.

The previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes was set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Hilda attempted this record to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams.”

“I also decided to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities,” she added.

Hilda prepared for the event by creating a 35-item menu “as a guide” for every meal that she would cook.

She ensured that she had the necessary ingredients to make each recipe, with her team procuring further food items while the cook-a-thon was underway “based on what was needed to be topped up.”

Hilda’s record attempt took the world of social media by storm, with millions in Nigeria and beyond following her progress via an Instagram live stream.

Hilda’s cook-a-thon was in fact so popular that our website crashed for two days due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans.

Several high-profile Nigerian figures visited Hilda to support her during her record attempt, such as the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; and award-winning singer Tiwa Savage.

Hilda was required to abide by several rules during her record-breaking cook-a-thon:

There must be at least two items being prepared or cooked at any time

A sous-chef is permitted to assist in prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but all the cooking must be done by the individual attempting the record.

One of the most important rules of our food-related record attempts is that all items must be consumed after cooking. To this end, Hilda invited any and all members of the Nigerian public to come and eat her freshly made meals. All leftover food was donated to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation.

“My team’s and my goal for this event was to make it free to all and to feed the less privileged,” Hilda said.

According to Hilda, each pot of food she cooked was big enough to serve 30-35 people, and “appropriate stock control was conducted” to avoid any wastage of food.

After graduating from Madonna University, Nigeria, with a degree in sociology, Hilda decided to embark on her culinary career. She was inspired by her mother, Lynda Ndukwe, who is also a chef.

Hilda went from success to success, hosting television show Dine on a Budget in 2020, before winning the Jollof Face-off competition in 2021. Representing her native Nigeria, Hilda beat Ghana’s Leslie Kumordzie to claim the victory.

Now, in 2023, she is officially a Guinness World Records title holder. Congratulations, Hilda!

Buratai made the call in an official statement he personally signed congratulating President Bola Tinubu on the occasion of the 2023 Democracy Day celebrations in the country.

“Let me also pay tribute to Chief MKO Abiola GCFR for his democratic sacrifice which we are celebrating. This is a clear confirmation that his sacrifice is not in vain. His spirits of selflessness, patriotism, and unity are worthy of emulation by all democratic leaders nationally and globally.

“Abiola was an international figure who fought for reparation as restitution for the injustices done to the black race worldwide. I, therefore, call on the United Nations (UN) to declare 12 June every year as World Democracy Day”, Buratai said

The Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, also commended Tinubu and all Nigerians for the historic feat of enshrining democracy in the country saying the president’s emergence, the country is on a sure way to greatness

“I congratulate H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the occasion of 2023 Nigeria’s Democracy Day Celebrations.

“H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s emergence as the 16th democratically elected President of Nigeria is another milestone in Nigeria’s march to an enduring democracy. Mr. President has seen it all in his struggle to ensure democracy takes root in Nigeria. His years in the trenches in the early 1990s brought him out as a true Democrat. Congratulations Your Excellency.

“I also congratulate Nigerians for their resilience since 1999 to ensure democracy is sustained through their votes.

“With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Nigeria’s Democratic saddle, his Renewed Hope Agenda is a sure way to Nigeria’s greatness in all ramifications of national development.

PoliticsTop Christian Cleric Resigns From Kaduna Commission Over El-rufai’s Revelation by ogododo(op): 11:34am On Jun 12, 2023
Nasir El-Rufai
AChristian cleric, Apostle Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, has resigned from the Kaduna Peace Commission, following now viral comments by immediate past Governor of the State, Nasir El-Rufai, that Muslims would dominate Nigeria’s politics for decades to come.

Dated June 8, Mr Kure’s resignation letter, obtained by Peoples Gazette, was titled, “Letter of Resignation as Co-Chair and Member House of Kaduna Family — Kaduna State Peace Commission”.

In the viral video, Mr El-Rufai actively campaigned for Muslim-Muslim ticket to become the norm in Nigeria. The ex-governor also explained why his past administration favoured Muslims over Christians in Kaduna State.

Further stating his reason for resigning from the committee, Mr Kure said that the Kaduna peace commission had been ineffective under the former governor’s administration, and that Mr El-Rufai’s comment was contrary to his beliefs and what the peace commission stands for.

He stated that Mr El-Rufai’s statement suggests that the peace commission was not set up to succeed, adding that it must have been the reason why the ex-governor never executed any of their suggestions while in office.

The Christian cleric thanked all members of the peace commission, especially Muslim leaders he worked with during his time as the Co-chair and member of the Kaduna Peace Commission.

He regretted that Mr El-Rufai’s comment would stir up deep wounds amongst the people of Southern Kaduna and Christians all over the country.

He wished that the new administration in Kaduna would try to heal wounds and promote harmony between Christians and Muslims in the State, especially in Southern Kaduna.

He spoke during an interaction with the senators in Abuja.

Former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has accused the lawmaker who branded launch of Nigeria Air as fraud of demanding five percent shares of the National Carrier Air from him.

During a hearing by the House of Representatives, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, had declared the launch of Nigeria Air a fraud.

He had picked holes in the project, criticising the Federal Government for what he described as poor handling.

Nnaji said after careful evaluation of the matter, his committee was dissatisfied with the actions of Sirika.

“We are equally irked by the role played by Ethiopian Airlines in this whole process. It does not speak well of the excellent brotherly relationship existing between our two nations.”

“A careful review of the process indicates the exercise to be highly opaque, shrouded in secrecy, shoddy and capable of ridiculing and tarnishing the image of Nigeria before the international community,” he had said.

But speaking when he appeared on ARISE TV on Sunday, Sirika said the lawmaker approached him and asked for five percent shares of the airline for “him and his people”.

“On the issue of Hon Nnaji who called Nigeria Air launch a fraud, I will respond now. I will say exactly what I told him in private when we spoke.”

Hon Nnaji asked me that I should give him 5% of Nigeria to carry him along with his people, and I said to him at that time, Honourable, a bidding process that has taken place, and some people won. So, I think you should go to those people and ask for the 5 percent.”

When Reuben Abati, anchor of the show, asked the former Minister to clarify if the lawmaker indeed asked for bribe for himself and other legislators, Sirika said, Let’s be fair, Hon Nnaji didn’t say other members. He said he wants it for himself and his people. His people could his be his family, could be members and it could be leadership. I don’t know, but he insisted on 5%. I said that he should relax and approach the owners. That’s exactly what I told him.”

The former Minister also criticised Nnaji and the aviation committee for conducting what translated to a “predetermined hearing”.

‘I was a member of the House of Reps 20 years ago, and 10 years ago, I was a Senator. I know the workings of the National Assembly. He [Nnaji] called for public hearing. And right under the public hearing, he just turned the paper and read the riot act. The practice in the National Assembly is that after hearing people and the complain, you now go and sit down as a committee, discuss the issues, raise them, approach the whole house of reps and take position of the house plus leadership and come back and make your findings known, but not immediately you just read the riot Act out. It means is predetermined.”

PoliticsI Could Have Slapped Kwankwaso At Aso Rock, Says Ganduje by ogododo(op): 7:35pm On Jun 09, 2023
Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has said he could have slapped his predecessor, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, if he met him at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

While briefing State House reporters after a meeting with Tinubu on the security situation in Kano State following the demolition exercise embarked upon by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Ganduje expressed displeasure.

“I know he is in the building but we have not met. Probably if we met, maybe I could have slapped him.”

Ganduje said the demolition exercise was done without carrying out any investigation or giving due notice in line with the provisions of Land Use Act.

The former governor said he spoke at length on the issue while reporting the matter to the president and had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, with video evidence of the looting and vandalisation that trailed the demolition.

He said the governor who he described as a “stooge” of Kwankwaso was no longer happy because of the condemnation that greeted the move.

Daily Trust reports that the state governor had said the demolition exercise was part of the fulfillment of his campaign promise to “restore” the urban development masterplan of the city.

He had also insisted that the exercise was not a vendetta against the past administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and that many more demolitions would follow.

PoliticsNigerian Police Raid Former Zamfara Governor, Matawalle’s House, Recover Four SU by ogododo(op): 3:35pm On Jun 09, 2023
Sources revealed that Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) were impounded during a raid on Matawalle’s GRA residence in Gusau, on Friday.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have raided the residence of the immediate past governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, in Gusau, the state capital.
Sources revealed that Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) were impounded during a raid on Matawalle’s GRA residence in Gusau, on Friday.
The number of vehicles recovered could not yet be ascertained, but a source said a total of four SUVs were seized.
Policemen were said to have stormed the former governor’s residence, which is not far from Government House, Gusau, Daily Trust reports.
ASP Yazdi Abubakar, Police Public Relations Officer in Zamfara, could not be reached for comments as his phone rang out when Daily Trust attempted to get his reaction.
Also, the Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communication to the former governor, Zailani Bappa, was also unavailable at the time of this report as his mobile lines were switched off.
SaharaReporters had on Saturday reported that the Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, accused his predecessor, Matawalle, of spending N2,794,337,500 on vehicles and leaving none behind upon his exit from office.
The governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Sulaiman Bala Idris, in a statement on Saturday, had noted that the contract was awarded by the former governor, for the purchase of vehicles to be distributed to dignitaries and other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) at N1,149,800,000.
He also added that Matawalle and his deputy should return all the missing vehicles with five working days.
“We have communicated officially to former Governor Bello Matawalle and his deputy to return all the missing vehicles within five (5) working days.”
He also alleged that N484,512,500 was spent on three bulletproof Jeep; N459,995,000 for seven sets of bulletproof Prado Jeep, and Land Cruiser; and N228,830,000 for seven Toyota Hilux.
The governor further said N61,200,000 was paid for 30 sets of Peugeot 406; N130,000,000 for one bulletproof Land Cruiser and N160,000,000.00 for two Land Cruiser Jeeps, while three vehicles were purchased at N120,000,000 for the office of the Deputy Governor.
The statement had read in part: “Our government is determined in fulfilling the campaign promises made to the good people of Zamfara State which involves the swift recovery of looted public funds and properties.
“The mischievous statement is only aimed at distracting us from doing the work that positively touches the lives of the people.
“Our time is precious and we cannot waste it in engaging or bandying words with a political party that spent four years without a single project beneficial to the people of Zamfara, instead their only achievement is massive looting of the state’s treasury.
“We have the facts and records available that expose Matawalle’s impropriety. Where is the lie? A contract was awarded by the former Governor, for the purchase of vehicles to be distributed to dignitaries and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) at the cost of N1,149,800,000.00. “The contract for the purchase of the vehicles was awarded to Hafkhad Properties and Facilities Management Nig. PoliticsFrom #occupynigeria To Muted Groans by ogododo(op): 7:41am On Jun 08, 2023
No matter how we pare it, the 2012 #OccupyNigeria protests will remain pivotal in our sociopolitical history. Its significance lies in how much the pushback against government insensitivity resounded nationwide and even among the Nigerians in the Diaspora. It started as protests against the fuel subsidies removal, but it soon culminated in other disquieting issues such as government profligacy. #OccupyNigeria was the crucial juncture where the “breath of fresh air” that supposedly ushered in the Goodluck Jonathan administration—elected less than a year then—was putrefied. Nothing else he did afterward could stop the doomsday clock of his administration that started ticking. He got stuck with the label of corruption, and it defined his image all through.

In light of the present administration of Bola Tinubu’s removal of the same fuel subsidies, but with far less dramatic effects, it is understandable that people would question why the public intellectuals, social advocates, labour unions, and other third-sector activists who turned the tables against Jonathan have been nearly mute this time. How did it happen that Jonathan was “wicked,” but Tinubu’s doing the same in the tardiest manner is an exhibition of “leadership”?

Woman Dies During Childbirth, Husband Blames Lagos Hospital For Negligence
While the difference in the responses then and now can be easily chalked down to factors such as tribalism, a sheer dislike for Jonathan, or even the benefit of hindsight, the critics make a strong case by raising the issue of the moral contents of public advocacy. Do the class of opinion entrepreneurs—from the public intellectuals, social advocates, social commentators, and even the so-called influencers—even have a moral anchor, or do they merely speak just so they too can be heard? Given that Tinubu himself was one of the several opportunists who hijacked the mood of dissatisfaction driving that protest to flaunt his own populist credentials, what does it say about his character that he would be the one to eventually remove the fuel subsidies without as much as creating a cushioning effect for the people who would expectedly be diminished by the multiplier effects of higher fuel prices? Tinubu, by writing that infamous letter to Jonathan to criticise him on the fuel subsidies, created a document that now testifies to his moral unscrupulousness.

But it has become typical that when the history of that moment is told in recent times, people redact the larger context and allege that the whole #OccupyNigeria affair was sponsored by politicians like Tinubu. That misattribution is unsurprising because our society does not put enough premium on memory, whether personal, collective, or even institutional. The #OccupyNigeria protests were far more spontaneous. They were instigated by reports of parliamentary investigations that revealed startling corruption in the payments between 2009 and 2011 (about $6.8bn). It was also the era of the Arab Spring and the Occupy Protests where protesters in different regions of the world were taking on their governments.

For us in Nigeria, it also seemed like the right time to question our government on its profligacy. The fuel subsidy issue under Jonathan could not have evaded the unrest that was roiling the rest of the world (just like the former President Muhammadu Buhari administration that succeeded him also took a hit from the #BlackLivesMatter protests that became #EndSARS in Nigeria). Each time someone points out to me that nobody has tried to organise another fuel subsidy protest like #OccupyNigeria since then, the question I ask them is if they would join such a gathering. If we were asked to go to Ojota now and protest, would you go? So much water has passed under the bridge of Nigerian sociopolitics since 2012; even the bridge has been carried away. What will be the point of investing energies into protests when the best the last one achieved was to catapult the same politicians who routinely suck Nigeria dry into Aso Rock?

Merely writing off the chicanery of the 2012 players as part of the game of politics will not do. The seeds of discontent that those dissemblers sow eventually grow into distrust and disquiet. The manner some elements in the South-West and the northern regions of the country were quick to opt out of any planned protests of the fuel subsidy removal itself was also disturbing. I should also recall that in 2012, those who opted out of the #OccupyNigeria protests were groups from the South-East and the South-South. That people could persuade themselves to suppress any dissent that threatens their kinsman’s political legitimacy shows how much Nigerians overly invested in the symbolism of the presidency. People will give up on advocating their own interests just so their tribesman in Aso Rock can survive. Getting Nigerians to form a multi-ethnic and multi-religious coalition and insist on the government working for us will require another level of political savviness.

That said, whatever is wrong with the implementation of the fuel subsidies removal is no argument for their retention. Whatever hypocrisy Tinubu and his minions in the so-called civil society might have manifested on this issue does not justify the payments. Outing these people as charlatans does not vindicate escalating the error of retaining the fuel subsidies. It is not worth matching hypocrisy for hypocrisy simply to point out the crookedness of our social commentators.

For one, it does not take much to see that every description of dystopia that will be occasioned if the fuel subsidies were ever removed happened even when it was sustained. We were told that the costs of goods and services would shoot up if they ever removed fuel subsidies, and the prices of everything did so immensely even without the removal. They said many people will fall into poverty if fuel subsidies were to be removed, but Nigerians fell into multi-dimensional poverty even though the costs of fuel subsidies rose astronomically. So what else can possibly go wrong that has not, many times and over?

Those who argue that even the USA gives fuel subsidies tend to overlook that what that country subsidises is production, not mere consumption. Besides, one cannot glibly compare an economy that is diversified, productive, and coherent with Nigeria’s voodoo capitalism that produces nothing yet consumes everything! As for those who argue that Tinubu should fight corruption in the sector instead of ending the subsidies, I hope they know how ridiculous that proposal sounds? If Buhari, who got into power by pretending to be the very embodiment of incorruptibility could not fight corruption, how do you expect Tinubu to fare better? How?

Tinubu himself knows he does not have the moral legitimacy to challenge anyone on corruption. The few times he opened his mouth to talk about corruption, he induced serious laughter. I am sure he is smart enough to not overreach himself by pursuing his fellow politicians on corruption. Doing so quickly opens him up to many vulnerabilities. He will promptly face another battle from those who have his dossier. They will not hesitate to tank whatever moral legitimacy he still has by producing the sordid revelations of his untoward affairs. He cannot fight the corruption in the fuel subsidies. The best he can afford is to seize the opening between two government transitions and cut off that umbilical cord forever.

If there is an important lesson to take away from the moral clarity that defined the fuel subsidy protests in 2012 and which is now hazy in post-Jonathan Nigeria, it is how much even the enterprise of truth-telling through social commentary is tainted with ethnic and religious sentiments. Going forward, some people will rightly be more cynical while others will show more circumspection in listening to the class of public intellectuals, activists, and the so-called social advocates, especially those whose ideas of right and wrong are dictated by how closer their opinions can get them to Aso Rock.

PoliticsNigerian Senate Throws Out Controversial Water Bill Promoted By Former President by ogododo(op): 10:28am On Jun 07, 2023
The senators rejected the bill on Tuesday after it was listed for concurrence on the order paper for consideration and passage.

Nigerian federal lawmakers in the Senate have finally trashed the controversial National Water Resources Bill pushed by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led Nigerian government.

The senators rejected the bill on Tuesday after it was listed for concurrence on the order paper for consideration and passage.

Recall that Buhari had in 2017 presented the bill to the Senate and the House of Representatives seeking to transfer the control of water resources from all the states of the federation to the Federal Government.

The immediate past President in the bill sought to establish the National Council on Water Resources, Nigeria Water Resources Regulatory Commission, River Basin Development Authorities, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, and the National Water Resources Institute.

According to the bill, the proposed bodies, if established, were to “provide for the regulation, equitable and sustainable development, management, use and conservation of Nigeria’s surface water and groundwater resources.”

The bill had since its presentation at the two legislative chambers generated controversy across the country as many Nigerians rejected the bill but the Buhari-led government had insisted on the passage of the bill into law by the 9th National Assembly lawmakers.

The House of Representatives had passed the bill in 2020 amidst suspicion by members and the general public.

Before the passage, Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, Sada Soli, said the then Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), as well as commissioners for justice and attorneys-general of the 36 states of the federation, had been consulted and the opinions received would be attached to the bill and distributed to all members.

But the rejection of the bill on Tuesday by the Senate has put an end to the controversy generated by the bill among governors and federal lawmakers mainly from the southern part of the country, PUNCH reports.

When the bill was read for concurrence on the floor of the Senate, Senator Gabriel Suswan from Benue North-West raised Order 85 of the Senate Rules, which provides that senators must have full details of the provisions of any bill coming for concurrence.

Also, Senator James Manager from Delta South, who seconded Senator Suswan stressed the need to have details of the bill since provision was made for only the title of the bill.

The Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, later ruled in favour of the rule cited, and thereafter, the red legislative chamber withheld concurrence to the bill, having ruled in favour of those who opposed it.

West Ham United play Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday (20:00 BST kick-off), with the Hammers looking to secure a first major trophy for 43 years.

There are reports up to 20,000 West Ham fans will be in Prague, Czech Republic, despite the club receiving 4,890 tickets for the 19,370-capacity Fortuna Arena.

"We're absolutely thrilled to be in the final," said Hammers boss David Moyes. "It's a big achievement for the club, but now it's about going and winning it."

West Ham have not won a major European trophy since defeating 1860 Munich in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup at Wembley in 1965. Their last major domestic trophy was the 1980 FA Cup.

The Europa Conference League is in its second season and is a third tier European club football competition after the Champions League and Europa League.

Roma won the inaugural Europa Conference League final after defeating Feyenoord.
