PoliticsSenator Adeola’s Top Aide, Adeniyi Sanni, Murdered In Lagos by ogododo(op): 8:25pm On Aug 05, 2023
Mr Adeniyi Sanni, a senior aide to Solomon Adeola, the senator representing Ogun West in the National Assembly has been killed in yet to be ascertained circumstances in Lagos early Saturday morning.

Spokesperson to Senator Adeola, Kayode Odunaro, in a statement in Abuja said the remains of Adeniyi was found with gunshot wounds dumped at Toyota bus stop in Oshodi area of Lagos on Saturday morning.

She added that a passersby had called the wife with the Next of Kin phone number on Adeniyi’s driver’s license to inform her of the discovery of the body of her husband.

The statement indicated that Sanni had earlier called his wife to send his vehicle papers to him by Whatsapp, indicating that he was stopped by security operatives at a checkpoint in Berger Area.

But the wife raised alarm as her husband became unreachable thereafter before the sad news of discovery of his remains was broke to her.

The statement reads in part: “Information available to the bereaved Senator in Abuja indicates that Mr. Sanni was stopped at a checking point around Berger Area of Lagos on his way to his home at Isheri by security agents.

“He was asked to provide the documents of the car he was driving, which he did through his wife who sent all the documents to his phone WhatsApp

“It was gathered that the wife called a while later and the late Mr. Sanni told him they are still checking the vehicle’s paper.

“His apprehensive wife later called on Mr. Sanni’s associates to say he could no longer reach her husband on phone necessitating the mobilization of a search party.

“She was later called by passersby through the Next of Kin phone number on her husband’s driver’s license that the body of Mr. Sanni was dumped around Toyota Bus Stop in Oshodi with gunshot wound.

“Senator Adeola who is involved in the ongoing ministerial screening at the Senate is shocked beyond words and devastated by the news of this sad incident, as Mr. Sanni was his close aide for over two decades.

“The Nigeria Police Force are investigating the killing.”

TravelFAAN Suspends Taxi Services At Abuja Airport by ogododo(op): 2:52pm On Aug 03, 2023
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has suspended the Airport Taxi Services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja with immediate effect.

The suspension, FAAN said, followed the lingering factional crisis among the car hire operators.

This, the authority stated, had been affecting airport car hire service operations.

Director, Public Affairs & Consumer Protection of FAAN, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua in a statement urged airport users to use alternative transportation means.

The statement read: “The FAAN wishes to inform the general public that the airport car hire service at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja has been suspended with immediate effect.

This is as a result of the unresolved factional dispute amongst the car hire operators which has been affecting airport car hire service operations.

“Consequent upon this suspension, FAAN Management advises the general public and all airport users, particularly our esteemed passengers to use secured alternative means of transportation or E-hailing services in and out of the airport.

“The Management of FAAN regrets any inconvenience this necessary suspension may cause our esteemed passengers, airport users and the general public. Normal Car Hire Services resume as soon as their differences are resolved.”

Business7.8 Million SMEs Die In Two Years — ASBON by ogododo(op): 7:59am On Aug 03, 2023
No fewer than 7.8 million small businesses under the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria have died within the last two years, according to information exclusively obtained by The PUNCH.

The President, ASBON, Femi Egbesola, disclosed this to The PUNCH during an interview.

He said, “Our statistics remain the same, and it is even more profound. I can categorically tell you now that 20 per cent of businesses have gone under within the past two and a half years, from January 2021 till date.

“Today, according to our survey, we have about 39 million existing businesses that are captured by data. 20 per cent of that is gone. If you look at 20 per cent of that is 7.8 million businesses that have gone under.”

Egbesola, who also spoke on the palliatives announced by President Bola Tinubu for the benefit of Small and Medium Enterprises, commended the move, but warned that the government should ensure that it liaised with the leadership of relevant associations to ensure that the palliatives were not diverted by corrupt politicians.

He said, “We have to know the terms and conditions of accessing the palliatives. In times past, we have had wonderful interventions like this, but most times, it ends in the hands of people who are not business owners.

“One thing is to have a policy; another thing is to have effective monitoring and implementation of that policy. If the government chooses to give palliatives to SMEs, that is fine. The next thing is to ascertain that it is actually the business owners that access this fund.

“One way that business owners can access this fund is by making the conditions affordable and accessible to that sector. 96 per cent of those in businesses are in the nano and micro sector, and these are people who are informal and mostly illiterates. So, if you come up with a policy like this, if the process is not done well, you may seclude this sector from benefitting from it.”

Egbesola urged the government to move swiftly to address the harsh business environment faced by business as the palliatives would have little effect if the environment remains harsh.

ASBON’s survey was disclosed after a 2022 report by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria in 2022, which noted that at least two million SMEs in the country crashed between 2017 to 2021.

The Director-General, SMEDAN, Dikko Radda, who made the disclosure stated that the number of SMEs in the country had dropped from 41 million to 39 million.

He said, “According to the 2021 MSME Survey, there are 39 million MSMEs in Nigeria. This is a significant drop from 41 million MSMEs reported in the 2017 survey report.

“Going by ASBON’s report, this number has dropped further from 39 million to 31.2 million SMEs.”

While speaking with The PUNCH, the National Vice President of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, Solomon Aderoju attributed the collapse of the SMEs to a harsh business environment from high cost of operations, inflationary pressure, over-taxation, lack of access to funding, among others.

Aderoju lamented that despite its immense contribution to the economy, there had been a lack of willingness on the part of the government to address these bottlenecks that continued to send small businesses out of operations.

He said, “The reason is obvious. The high cost of operations, lack of funding, poor infrastructure, multiple taxes. Today we went to LIRS where we talked about multiple tax and how it is affecting the SMEs.”

According to a report by a Lagos-based enterprise support organisation — FATE Foundation, many SMEs that went out of businesses were the ones hardest hit by the post-COVID-19 economic realities.

A report by the group noted that access to finance was the top need area indicated by 74 per cent of its survey respondents.

The report read in part, “For ecosystem stakeholders who are able to provide financing opportunities, developing financial support packages through grants, interest-free loans and bridge financing to meet critical needs such as salaries and working capital are particularly important at this time. The funds must be easy to access, clear in their terms and prompt to disburse.”

FATE Foundation’s report also tallied by a survey by the World Bank which said that, although small businesses provided over 80 per cent of Nigeria’s jobs, only 15 per cent of SMEs in the country reported had a bank loan or line of credit.

PoliticsWe Have Obtained DSS, Police Permissions For Protest In Abia – Labour Leaders by ogododo(op): 7:47am On Aug 02, 2023
The organized labour in Abia State says it has obtained approval from both the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, to join their colleagues from across the federation to protest the high price of petrol, following the federal government’s removal of subsidy on petrol.

This was made known by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, during their visit to Governor Alex Otti.

The labour leaders, who were led by Comrade Paschal Nweke of NLC and Comrade Ihechi Enogwe of TUC clarified that the Wednesday’s protest is not designed to attack the government of Abia State, but against the Federal government, adding that it is aimed at pressing home their disagreement with the federal government over its harsh economic policy.

The labour leaders thanked Governor Otti for paying July salaries of Abia workers before the end of July and also appreciated him for appointing a labour unionist, Comrade Sunny Onwuma as a commissioner.

Responding, Governor Otti thanked the visitors for coming to brief him about their plan and appealed to them to ensure that they conduct themselves orderly during the protest and not allow strangers to hijack the rally.

He explained how the twin issues of petroleum subsidy and foreign exchange demand had conspired to put the nation’s economy on dire straits, adding that it was only a rich few that were benefitting from subsidy payments and not the poor.

The Governor, however, acknowledged the negative impact that the sudden removal of subsidy on petrol may have had on the populace.

“The challenge for us is to ensure that the impact is reduced and we’re putting our heads together to see how we, as a State, will reduce the impact on our people.

“I’m happy that you have promised that there is not going to be any violence because people can also hijack it and once people hijack it, it goes out of your control,” Otti said.

The Governor declared that there is nothing wrong with protest for as long as it is conducted within the ambit of the law.

According to Otti, “It’s a democracy so your voices should be heard. But what I think is also important is that when you see genuine effort at resolving what you’re protesting against, then you should embrace it because all of us are asking for the same thing. We want a better place for everybody.”

PoliticsTranscript Of President Tinubu's Speech On The Current Economic Challenges by ogododo(op): 7:26pm On Jul 31, 2023
My fellow citizens,

I want to talk to you about our economy. It is important that you understand the reasons for the policy measures I have taken to combat the serious economic challenges this nation has long faced.

2. I am not going to talk in difficult terms by dwelling on economic jargon and concepts. I will speak in plain, clear language so that you know where I stand. More importantly, so that you see and hopefully will share my vision regarding the journey to a better, more productive economy for our beloved country.

3. For several years, I have consistently maintained the position that the fuel subsidy had to go. This once beneficial measure had outlived its usefulness. The subsidy cost us trillions of Naira yearly. Such a vast sum of money would have been better spent on public transportation, healthcare, schools, housing and even national security. Instead, it was being funnelled into the deep pockets and lavish bank accounts of a select group of individuals.

4. This group had amassed so much wealth and power that they became a serious threat to the fairness of our economy and the integrity of our democratic governance. To be blunt, Nigeria could never become the society it was intended to be as long as such small, powerful yet unelected groups hold enormous influence over our political economy and the institutions that govern it.

5. The whims of the few should never hold dominant sway over the hopes and aspirations of the many. If we are to be a democracy, the people and not the power of money must be sovereign.

6. The preceding administration saw this looming danger as well. Indeed, it made no provision in the 2023 Appropriations for subsidy after June this year. Removal of this once helpful device that had transformed into a millstone around the country’s neck had become inevitable.

7. Also, the multiple exchange rate system that had been established became nothing but a highway of currency speculation. It diverted money that should have been used to create jobs, build factories and businesses for millions of people. Our national wealth was doled on favourable terms to a handful of people who have been made filthy rich simply by moving money from one hand to another. This too was extremely unfair.

8. It also compounded the threat that the illicit and mass accumulation of money posed to the future of our democratic system and its economy.

9. I had promised to reform the economy for the long-term good by fighting the major imbalances that had plagued our economy. Ending the subsidy and the preferential exchange rate system were key to this fight. This fight is to define the fate and future of our nation. Much is in the balance.

10. Thus, the defects in our economy immensely profited a tiny elite, the elite of the elite you might call them. As we moved to fight the flaws in the economy, the people who grow rich from them, predictably, will fight back through every means necessary.

11. Our economy is going through a tough patch and you are being hurt by it. The cost of fuel has gone up. Food and other prices have followed it. Households and businesses struggle. Things seem anxious and uncertain. I understand the hardship you face. I wish there were other ways. But there is not. If there were, I would have taken that route as I came here to help not hurt the people and nation that I love.

12. What I can offer in the immediate is to reduce the burden our current economic situation has imposed on all of us, most especially on businesses, the working class and the most vulnerable among us.

13. Already, the Federal Government is working closely with states and local governments to implement interventions that will cushion the pains of our people across socio-economic brackets.

14. Earlier this month, I signed four (4) Executive Orders in keeping with my electoral promise to address unfriendly fiscal policies and multiple taxes that are stifling the business environment. These Executive Orders on suspension and deferred commencement of some taxes will provide the necessary buffers and headroom to businesses in the manufacturing sector to continue to thrive and expand.

15. To strengthen the manufacturing sector, increase its capacity to expand and create good paying jobs, we are going to spend N75 billion between July 2023 and March 2024. Our objective is to fund 75 enterprises with great potential to kick-start a sustainable economic growth, accelerate structural transformation and improve productivity. Each of the 75 manufacturing enterprises will be able to access N1 Billion credit at 9% per annum with maximum of 60 months repayment for long term loans and 12 months for working capital.

16. Our administration recognises the importance of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and the informal sector as drivers of growth. We are going to energise this very important sector with N125 billion.

17. Out of the sum, we will spend N50 billion on Conditional Grant to 1 million nano businesses between now and March 2024. Our target is to give N50,000 each to 1,300 nano business owners in each of the 774 local governments across the country.

18. Ultimately, this programme will further drive financial inclusion by onboarding beneficiaries into the formal banking system. In like manner, we will fund 100,000 MSMEs and start-ups with N75 billion. Under this scheme, each enterprise promoter will be able to get between N500,000 to N1million at 9% interest per annum and a repayment period of 36 months.

19. To further ensure that prices of food items remain affordable, we have had a multi-stakeholder engagement with various farmers’ associations and operators within the agricultural value chain.

20. In the short and immediate terms, we will ensure staple foods are available and affordable. To this end, I have ordered the release of 200,000 Metric Tonnes of grains from strategic reserves to households across the 36 states and FCT to moderate prices. We are also providing 225,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer, seedlings and other inputs to farmers who are committed to our food security agenda.

21. Our plan to support cultivation of 500,000 hectares of farmland and all-year-round farming practice remains on course. To be specific, N200 billion out of the N500 billion approved by the National Assembly will be disbursed as follows:

-Our administration will invest N50 billion each to cultivate 150,000 hectares of rice and maize.

-N50 billion each will also be earmarked to cultivate 100,000 hectares of wheat and cassava.

22. This expansive agricultural programme will be implemented targeting small-holder farmers and leveraging large-scale private sector players in the agric business with strong performance record.

23. In this regard, the expertise of Development Finance Institutions, commercial banks and microfinance banks will be tapped into to develop a viable and an appropriate transaction structure for all stakeholders.

24. Fellow Nigerians, I made a solemn pledge to work for you. How to improve your welfare and living condition is of paramount importance to me and it’s the only thing that keeps me up day and night.

25. It is in the light of this that I approved the Infrastructure Support Fund for the States. This new Infrastructure Fund will enable States to intervene and invest in critical areas and bring relief to many of the pain points as well as revamp our decaying healthcare and educational Infrastructure.

26. The fund will also bring improvements to rural access roads to ease evacuation of farm produce to markets. With the fund, our states will become more competitive and on a stronger financial footing to deliver economic prosperity to Nigerians.

27. Part of our programme is to roll out buses across the states and local governments for mass transit at a much more affordable rate. We have made provision to invest N100 billion between now and March 2024 to acquire 3000 units of 20-seater CNG-fuelled buses.

28. These buses will be shared to major transportation companies in the states, using the intensity of travel per capital. Participating transport companies will be able to access credit under this facility at 9% per annum with 60 months repayment period.

29. In the same vein, we are also working in collaboration with the Labour unions to introduce a new national minimum wage for workers. I want to tell our workers this: your salary review is coming.

30. Once we agree on the new minimum wage and general upward review, we will make budget provision for it for immediate implementation.

31. I want to use this opportunity to salute many private employers in the Organised Private Sector who have already implemented general salary review for employees.

32. Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us and there is no doubt about it that it is tough on us. But I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture. All of our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work.

33. Sadly, there was an unavoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully online. However, we are swiftly closing the time gap. I plead with you to please have faith in our ability to deliver and in our concern for your well-being.

34. We will get out of this turbulence. And, due to the measures we have taken, Nigeria will be better equipped and able to take advantage of the future that awaits her.

35. In a little over two months, we have saved over a trillion Naira that would have been squandered on the unproductive fuel subsidy which only benefitted smugglers and fraudsters. That money will now be used more directly and more beneficially for you and your families.

36. For example, we shall fulfill our promise to make education more affordable to all and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian student will have to abandon his or her education because of lack of money.

37. Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On this principle, we shall never falter.

38. We are also monitoring the effects of the exchange rate and inflation on gasoline prices. If and when necessary, we will intervene.

39. I assure you my fellow country men and women that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn.

40. Now, I must get back to work in order to make this vision come true.

41. Thank you all for listening and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu had transmitted 39 names for screening and confirmation as Commissioners and Special Advisers designated to the State’s House of Assembly.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic group, has stated that the list of commissioners unveiled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State failed to pass inclusivity and integrity tests.

Sanwo-Olu had transmitted 39 names for screening and confirmation as Commissioners and Special Advisers designated to the State’s House of Assembly.

According to a tweet on Friday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, 30 per cent of the commissioner-nominees are women, while others are youths, technocrats and politicians.

Some members of the governor’s cabinet during his first term in office made the list, while a number of others did not.

However, the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola in a statement on Saturday said only 8 of the nominees were verifiable Muslims. He added that MURIC found it difficult to understand why a cabinet composition should be weaponised by the Lagos State Government (LASG) against Muslims.

Akintola who explained that it is a betrayal of trust, said Lagos Muslims voted en masse for Sanwo-Olu, noting that MURIC in particular came out openly to support his second term and persuaded fellow Muslims to drop their opposition to the governor.

He said; “The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday unveiled the list of commissioners for the state. The list contained 39 names.

“But to our surprise, only 8 of the nominees are verifiable Muslims. We find it difficult to understand why cabinet composition should be weaponised by the Lagos State Government (LASG) against Muslims. Ratio 31:8 fails inclusivity test. It also fails integrity test. What percentage is 8 out of 39? What is the rationale for coming out with this atrocious ratio?

“This is exactly what we have been saying about the political marginalisation of Muslims in the South-West. It is a disease of the eyes, not of the nose. It needs no smelling. We can all see and read the list. It is all over the internet. Muslims groups all over the South West are expressing dissatisfaction with the development.

“We strongly denounce this deliberate and illegal attempt to deprive Muslims of opportunities to partake in the governance of their environment.
“It is illegal because Section 14(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stipulates that ‘The composition of the Government of the Federation, a State, a local government council, or any of the agencies of such Government or council, and the conduct of the affairs of the Government or council or such agencies shall be carried out in such manner as to recognise the diversity of the people within its area of authority and the need to promote a sense of belonging and loyalty among all the people of the Federation."

“Sanwo-Olu’s proposed cabinet is therefore illegal, illegitimate, unlawful and unconstitutional to the extent that it failed to be fair to the teeming Muslim population in the state. It will remain so until he reviews it and makes the list inclusive. Lagos Muslims have been rubbished by this list. It is a dirty slap in the face. This list is disgusting, repulsive and therefore unacceptable.

“It is a betrayal of trust because Lagos Muslims voted en masse for Sanwo-Olu. MURIC in particular came out openly to support his second term and we persuaded fellow Muslims to drop their opposition to the governor. But imagine this!

“We are sending a note of warning to all political parties in the state. 2027 will not be business as usual. Don’t come to lobby us for votes if your candidate is not a Muslim. It is the turn of Muslims in 2027 and we will vote massively for any party that picks a Muslim as its gubernatorial flag bearer.

“MURIC has no political tabula rasa. We are open to all parties. The welfare of Nigerian Muslims is our major interest. We will not hide that. Neither do we owe anyone any apology for it.”

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to persevere in the face of hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.

Prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), or petrol, have more than tripled from below N200 per litre in less than two months since he took office on May 29, when he declared in his inaugural address that “fuel subsidy is gone”.

The economic travails resulting from the policy have since prompted protest calls by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Speaking to youths of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday, the President appealed for Nigerians’ understanding as the “economic reforms” take effect.

I can assure you that I understand your pains and the pains of your uncles, brothers, your mums. I understand, I feel it. It is not easy to get out a monster of over 40 years that is called subsidy,” Tinubu said.

For few leaders, elites, fleecing Nigeria, it’s not acceptable and will never be acceptable to us all. You’ve endured, you just need to persevere a little bit more. It’s not going to be easy to make the changes necessary, but what we are going through today is saving for greatness, tomorrow.”
