Politics › FG To Begin Home Delivery Of Passports Soon – Aregbesola by ogododo(op): 8:04pm On May 20, 2023 |
The Federal Government has promised to conclude negotiations with NIPOST on the usage of its speedy mail service to start delivering passports to Nigerians who opt for such a service.
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, disclosed this while speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Immigration Service Passport Front Desk Office in Auchi, Edo State, on Saturday, 20th May 2023. “We are in the final stage of concluding negotiations with NIPOST to begin using its speed mail service to deliver passports to Nigerians wherever they are in the world after production,” the Minister disclosed.
According to a statement by Sola Fasure, Media Adviser to the Minister, the launch of an additional Passport Front Office in Auchi, Edo State, was part of the government’s effort towards effective service delivery to Nigerians.
He quoted Aregbesola as saying it was the intention of the government to provide the passport to anyone desirous of it within a reasonable time, at an affordable price and without any stress.
Aregbesola, while stating that Edo State has one of the highest passport applications in Nigeria, revealed that the waiting period between application and collection would likely increase due to the recent increase in demand.
In his words: “Our current working schedule is that fresh application would take six weeks after biometric data registration and three weeks for renewal. This is reasonable, competitive and in line the global best practices.
“The challenge, however, is the waiting period at the point of application and data registration. “All applicants will be put in a queue, depending on the centre of their choice, to determine the registration date. Regrettably, it might take two months in some highly competitive centres where the application is very high. We have no control over this.”
He however said that the Federal Government is intentional about opening more front desk offices, in order to increase the registration centres and reduce the waiting period before biometric data capture.
This year alone, the Minister of Interior had been in Daura in Katsina State, Alimosho in Lagos, Ilesa in Osun, Zaria in Kaduna and Oyo in Oyo State to commission Passport Front Desk Offices.
Speaking earlier, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Isah Jere Idris, said that the choice of Auchi is apt, as Edo State ranks fifth amongst states with the highest volume of passport applications locally.
According to him, “In the past 365 days, Edo state has processed 56,291 applications out of the 1.5 million passports produced in Nigeria. The commissioning of this front office will no doubt go a long way in reducing the traffic in Edo State and other neighbouring States.” https://dailytrust.com/fg-to-begin-home-delivery-of-passports-soon-aregbesola/

Politics › Insecurity Gave Me Sleepless Nights During My Tenure – Jonathan by ogododo(op): 3:05pm On May 20, 2023 |
Former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday said he used to lose sleep over insecurity that in the country during his tenure.
Jonathan stated this while he commissioned projects constructed by Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku in Jalingo.
Addressing the crowd at the commissioning of the 22 kilometer dual carriageway from Panti Napo to NYSC orientation permanent camp, the former president praised people of the state for choosing to live in peace.
He also commended the state governor and the contractor handling the project, Claneburge Construction Company for a quality job.
“When I was the president of Nigeria, the insecurity of the nation did give me sleepless nights, sometimes even while in the church, my ADC would bring a phone to show to me how people were being murdered or kidnapped, and that gave me serious headache.
“As I came into the Jalingo airport, I saw the director of SSS and I quickly asked him how is Taraba security wise, he replied that Taraba is relatively peaceful.
“I believe insecurity is the handwork of the citizens, the people of Taraba have chosen to live peacefully and you are enjoying it, is not a business of the federal or state government alone, I thank you for choosing to live in peace,” he said.
Governor Ishaku said the construction of the dual carriageway was part of the priority of his administration, and thanked God for giving him the grace to complete and commission the project under the eight years of his administration. https://leadership.ng/insecurity-gave-me-sleepless-nights-during-my-tenure-jonathan/

Business › Naira Falls To 760/$, Ahead Of Inauguration by ogododo(op): 7:36am On May 19, 2023 |
Ahead of the inauguration of the next administration, the US dollar has risen to N760 as politicians, including contenders for the presiding officers of the National Assembly, scamper for the foreign currency.
The inauguration of the next administration will be held on May 29, 2023. It is expected that the 10th Assembly will be inaugurated on June 13 after a proclamation letter by the new president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Daily Trust reports that the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari will expire in the next 10 days.
A cross-section of Bureau de Change (BDC) operators told this paper that the dollar, which had in the last four weeks hovered around N735, went up to N760 in Abuja on Thursday.
One of the BDC operators said the dollar recorded a N12 gain, the highest in recent times. “On Wednesday, it was selling for N748 as of 8pm. But today (Thursday) it is selling for N761 as of 6pm. This is because of the mad rush for the currency by politicians,” he said.
According to him, the contenders for presiding officers of the National Assembly are reaching out to their colleagues with dollars.
“Through their agents, they are mopping up the currency. We were told that the assembly would be inaugurated next month. Aside from contenders, some people are converting their assets to dollars ahead of the inauguration. They are afraid of the policies the new administration may introduce,” he said.
Market factors behind dollar hike – BDCs
Speaking on the development, a Bureau de Change operator in Abuja, Ahmed Sabitu, said a dollar is now exchanged for N760.
“Today, if you want to buy, we will sell it to you at N760 to $1, but if you are selling, we will give it to you at N750,” he said.
Asked why the hike in price, he said, “Market forces have made the dollar to increase, and there is nothing we can do about it.”
A BDC operator in Kano, Sharaffadin Bello, said in Kano, a dollar is exchanged for N750 if one is buying. He added that “If you are selling, we will buy at N745 per dollar.”
Another BDC operator in Lagos, Yusuf Baba Ringim, said the price depends on how much a customer wants to exchange.
“If you’re buying $1,000 and above, we will sell it at N755 per dollar, but if it is anything less than that, then you have to pay N760 per dollar,” Ringim explained.
Asked when the currency exchange rate rose, Ringim said, “Only last week, and we have to work according to the market.”
N/Assembly leadership contenders woo lawmakers with dollars
Three weeks to the inauguration of the 10th Assembly, aspirants for the Senate presidency and House of Representatives speaker’s position have been reaching out to lawmakers-elect, allegedly with thousands of dollars, to get their votes during the election of principal officers.
Senators Godswill Akpabio (Akwa-Ibom), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), among others, are in the race for the Senate presidency.
For the House of Representatives Speaker’s position, the contenders are: Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase (Plateau), Tajudeen Abbas (Kaduna), Mukhtar Betara (Borno), Yusuf Gagdi (Plateau), Sada Soli Jibia (Katsina), Aminu Sani Jaji (Zamfara), and Mariam Odinaka Onuoha (Imo), among others.
Before the leadership of the APC released its zoning formula, the race, according to multiple sources, was almost turning into an election of the highest bidder, with contenders racing to outspend themselves.
Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno), in an interview with BBC Hausa, said some lawmakers eyeing the Senate presidency seat were inducing their colleagues with money in exchange for votes.
“There are senators aspiring to be Senate president who give money to senators,” he said.
Lawmakers confirmed to the Daily Trust that even the APC zoning arrangement had not stopped some aspirants from dolling out dollars to their colleagues, as some insist on going ahead with their bids for the Senate presidency and speakership. https://dailytrust.com/ahead-inauguration-naira-falls-to-760/

Politics › 3 Soldiers Killed, 10 Others Wounded In ISWAP IED Attack by ogododo(op): 10:53am On May 15, 2023 |
Three soldiers have been killed while 10 others sustained various degrees of injuries in an ambush on their convoy by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) terrorist group, while repelling terrorists in Abadam local government area of Borno State.
It was gathered that the troops, who were part of clearance operation against the terror group comprising of Sector 3 and Sector 4 MultiNational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), came under attack on Sunday by a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), while advancing towards ISWAP camp in Tunbum Reza.
An intelligence information obtained by Zagazola Makama, a Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region from top security sources, which was made available to LEADERSHIP, revealed that the joint troops effectively responded with superior firepower and successfully fought off the ambush.
The sources said that one of the VBIED hit an MRAP belonging to Nigérienne Republic troops of Sector 4 MNJTF while the other hit a Hilux truck.
The sources said that terrorists also suffered significant casualties, although the exact number was yet to be determined.
“This attack comes in less than 24 hours after the troops thwarted a similar attack in Arege resulting in the killing of 10 ISWAP terrorists and the destruction of their three vehicles.
“The ISWAP terrorists made an audacious attempt to infiltrate the advancing troops’ harbor using a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), but was instantly naturalized,” he said.
The wounded personnel were evacuated for treatment.
The ongoing operation by troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) nicknamed Operation HARBIN ZUMA was designed to clear the terrorists’ hideouts and restore total sanity in the Lake Chad region
ISWAP on the other hand resorted to desperate but extreme measures to fight back against the intrusion of their enclaves by the military through heightenening series of PBIED, VBIED and RSBIED attacks. https://leadership.ng/3-soldiers-killed-10-others-wounded-in-iswap-ied-attack/

Politics › Tinubu Won’t Govern From Abroad, Says Onanuga by ogododo(op): 2:40pm On May 14, 2023 |
President-elect Bola Tinubu will not govern the country from abroad, Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, has said. While speaking on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, the former managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) spoke on what the president-elect would most likely do in his first 10 days in office. Responding to some Nigerians who are saying that Tinubu may rule from London like President Muhammadu Buhari at a certain time, Onanuga said that won’t happen. He said, “You cannot imagine the kind of pressure people who are looking for positions in the government are piling on ordinary members of the committee, not to talk of the president-elect. People have been bringing all manner of requests. Fire guts shops at Ibadan’s Agbeni market ‘Nigeria spends billions daily to subsidize the rich’ “So, as the press release rightly pointed out, the travel was just to avoid pressure and distraction. “He wanted to go to London to see his grandchildren, but I think that at the last minute he decided not to go. He came back home instead. “Also, he was in Saudi Arabia before the elections, so he decided not to go there again. So he decided to cut those ones and then decided to come home.” On whether the president-elect would settle fully in Nigeria and face the challenges ahead, he said, “I believe he would do so. But you know we now live in a global village, as they say. “So, even if he is in Russia, he can hold zoom meetings and do all kinds of things. But I can assure you that he will be here physically to do his job. He will not be an absentee kind of president,” he added. Coincidentally, both Tinubu and Buhari are currently in Europe. https://dailytrust.com/tinubu-wont-govern-from-abroad-says-onanuga/ |

Senate president, speaker can’t be of same faith — it’ll fuel Islamisation agenda narrative - ShettimaKashim Shettima, vice-president-elect, has implored lawmakers-elect to accept the zoning arrangement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the leadership of the 10th national assembly.
Shettima spoke during a meeting some of the house of representatives members-elect on Friday.
Earlier this week, controversy ensued within APC after the party nominated Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Abbas Tajudeen, a house of representatives member from Kaduna, for the national assembly leadership positions.
While Akpabio was nominated for president of the senate, Tajudeen was endorsed for the speaker of the house of representatives.
The party also nominated Barau Jibrin, senator representing Kano north, as deputy senate president, and Benjamin Kalu, a lawmaker from Abia and current house spokesperson, as deputy speaker.
The nominations have been faulted by lawmakers within and outside the party and several attempts to mitigate the rift have proven futile so far.
Speaking during the meeting with lawmakers-elect, Shettima said APC seeks to avoid a situation where all the top officials of the incoming administration would be of the same faith.
He said the circumstance could “validate the negative narrative of the Islamisation agenda of Nigeria”.
Shettima added that the leadership of the forthcoming national assembly must be inclusive because the “stability of the nation is much more important than any other consideration”.
“What we are trying to avoid is a situation whereby the number one citizen, number two citizen, the number three citizen, and the number four citizen are all of the same faith. That will lend credence, and validate the negative narrative of the Islamisation agenda of Nigeria,” the vice-president-elect said.
‘This is why my principal, a fair-minded leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more inclined towards having the number three citizen from the South/south or the south-east. Even in the current circumstance that we find ourselves in, the stability of the nation is much more important than any other consideration.
“All other considerations have to be relegated to the background because we are talking about the stability of the nation.
“We are talking about inclusivity, we are talking about togetherness because nation-building is a continuous work in progress and politics is about perception, it is about optics. I am quite glad that Benjamin Kalu will emerge as the deputy speaker. The hope for the black man rests with the people of this country.” https://www.thecable.ng/shettima-senate-president-speaker-cant-be-of-same-faith-itll-fuel-islamisation-agenda-narrative/amp

Politics › Nigerians Will Appreciate Buhari Later — Adesina by ogododo(op): 12:57pm On May 12, 2023 |
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has disclosed that Nigerians will appreciate the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), after he leaves office on May 29, 2023.
He said beyond those who seek to rewrite history and remember his (Buhari’s) regime for all the wrong reasons, his principal would be remembered for many achievements by fair Nigerians.
Adesina disclosed this in his weekly article titled ‘NG-CARES: HOW BUHARI QUIETLY ATTENDS TO NEEDS OF NIGERIANS’, where he reeled out some of the achievements of the President.
He argued that Buhari has the interest of Nigerians at heart and worked assiduously for the betterment of the country with his “care and kindness to Nigerians”.
According to him, history will adequately record the many ways in which President Buhari has quietly cared for Nigerians.
“Some revisionists are busy, trying to obfuscate issues and obliterate the achievements of the Buhari administration. But truth is like cork in water. The more you press it down, the more it stays afloat.
“After he retires to his native Daura, in Katsina State, we will always be glad that the honest man was here. I mean those who are fair-minded, but who happen to number in scores of millions,’ he wrote.
Adesina added, “The judgement of history is usually the most enduring, and as President Muhammadu Buhari weighs anchor in less than three weeks, posterity will be impartial, and, therefore, kind to him.
“One signpost of the administration is its care and kindness to Nigerians. Quietly. Without fuss. No adulation or self-aggrandisement.”
On some of Buhari’s interventions, Adesina wrote, “These welfarist interventions give a window into the kind soul of the President, a man some people have not bothered to discern, dissect and decipher.
“They just deliberately stay in the trenches of the past, soused and marooned in apocryphal beliefs: oh, he ruled with an iron fist as military leader. He herded people into jail. He imprisoned journalists through Decree 4. He also had Decree 2, which gave him power to detain anyone indefinitely.
“No human face. He’s a Fulani, and therefore, a herdsman, who supports his people to attack farmers. Religious bigot, who does not recognize any other faith. True? False. And I should know. Why? Because I’ve worked with him closely for eight years, and I can say I know the man Muhammadu Buhari, apart from the myth and the deliberate misconceptions.” https://punchng.com/nigerians-will-appreciate-buhari-later-adesina/
