The Nigeria Immigration Service has carpeted the former Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Joe Keshi, over his comment that his wife spent nine months on the renewal of the international passport. Keshi had lamented that it took the NIS nine months to issue his wife’s international passport renewal in Abuja. Keshi disclosed this on Tuesday in an Arise Television Interview, saying there is a need for behavioural reformation in Nigeria’s agencies, especially the security agents. He said, “Nigeria security agencies need to learn from the way developed countries handle things. “It took my wife nine months to get an international passport renewal here in Abuja; I had to call three former Comptrollers of Immigration before it was done”, he lamented. But, in an interview on Tuesday with DAILY POST, the spokesperson for Nigeria Immigration Service, Deputy Comptroller Tony Akuneme, reacting to Keshi’s allegation, said the delay experienced by Keshi’s wife was due to irregularities in the passport renewal application. He explained that International passport issuance takes regular six-weeks except in case of irregularities, for instance, names, National Identity Number, NIN, and other discrepancies during application. He expressed dissatisfaction over the use of third-party and touts for passport applications. He said applicants could efficiently process all passport-related issues directly online. “I can assure you that Joe Keshi’s wife has irregularities; I challenge him to a debate on the same television to make him accept the irregularities on her application. Either her NIN or her passport doesn’t synchronize, and we insist both must synchronize before the passport is produced. I challenge Keshi to produce his wife’s form filled, and you can be sure that a third party or touts filled the form. “At times touts or third parties help make applications. And they do not know that those people use fictitious phone numbers and details to fill out the application, so it takes the Service forever to reach such people when there are issues like NIN irregularities. That is the only situation where an application can take one or two months. Yes, there are issues, and we are trying our best to improve, but it is unbecoming of a high-place diplomat to cast aspersions on a federal government agency just because he has retired; I am sure if he were still an active Ambassador; he won’t make such a statement on television”, he said. “Most Nigerians who are correcting one error or the other, like their date of birth, names, it takes longer than the regular six weeks for passport issuance. Most times, Nigerians don’t tell you they are changing something; they don’t believe we will find out that applicants are trying to change something from their previous records; we now get into a fix because of lack of full disclosure, and they begin to call Immigration”, he added. https://dailypost.ng/2023/04/04/nis-carpets-former-diplomat-keshi-over-comment-on-delay-of-international-passport-issuance/ |

A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the much-anticipated meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party. The party’s Deputy Youth Leader and NEC member, Timothy Osadolor, in an interview with The PUNCH on Monday said although the party was planning to hold a NEC meeting, a date had yet to be fixed. The PUNCH learnt on Monday that the meeting, the first under the leadership of the PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, is unlikely to hold until after April 17, a date set aside for the hearing of the suit on the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu. Ayu was suspended by his Igyorov ward in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State. My Pastoral Work Doesn't Stop Me From Singing Secular Music - Ogun Cleric | Punch Following his suspension and subsequent decision to step aside in obedience to a court order, Ayu is seeking to vacate the order made by Justice Wilfred of the Benue State High Court in Makurdi. Damagum, who replaced Ayu in acting capacity in line with the provisions of Section 45 (2) of the PDP Constitution, wasted no time in reversing one of the controversial decisions made by the Ayu-led National Working Committee. He overturned the decision to refer Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, to the National Disciplinary Committee of the party as well as the suspension party stalwarts, such as the ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; and governors of Katsina and Ekiti states, Ibrahim Shema and Ayo Fayose, respectively. Damagum is expected to convene a NEC meeting to deliberate on issues concerning the party, including the issues leading to Ayu’s suspension. Although Damagun denied knowledge of an imminent NEC meeting, telling our reporter that “I am just hearing this from you,” a credible party source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The PUNCH that the meeting was being discussed with no date slated for it yet. “You know NEC is a big event; party leaders and stakeholders attend from across the country. As a result, there is a need for adequate preparation so that you don’t send invites only to realise that the party was not ready for it. Talks are in progress and a date would be announced as soon as possible. “I think the new leadership seems to be too much in a hurry and it may have been advised to tread carefully. The substantive National Chairman did not resign; he stepped aside. His suspension is before the court. Whether we like or not, he has his loyalists, some of whom have been very vocal in the media. I think these and other related issues are the reasons a date has not been picked for a NEC meeting,” the source said. Also speaking, a NEC member, Timothy Osadolor, stated, “It is only natural for NEC meeting to be convened now but there are procedures. You can’t convene a NEC meeting without preparations, security, and all of that. I am sure that once the leadership of the party agrees on these things, a date will be communicated, and notice will be issued. For now, it is still at a discussion level. No tentative date has been fixed for it,” he said. Efforts to get the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and his deputy, Ibrahim Abdullahi, were not successful as both men neither picked their calls nor responded to messages sent to them on WhatsApp. https://punchng.com/pdp-yet-to-fix-date-for-nec-meeting-nwc-member/ |
The former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Kalu, has announced the passing on to eternal glory of his first wife, Mrs Ifeoma Kalu, who died at the age of 61. In a post on his official social media page, signed by him, the former governor and Chief Whip of the Senate said Ifeoma was a woman of virtue who was committed to the service of God and humanity. Kalu wrote, “With a heavy heart and pain, we announce the passing on to the eternal glory of Mrs Ifeoma Ada Kalu aged 61. “She was a woman of virtue who was committed to the service of God and humanity. “A memorial service in her honour is scheduled to hold in the United States of America.” He urged the public to remember Mrs Ifeoma and her loved ones in prayers during this difficult period. https://punchng.com/just-in-orji-kalu-loses-wife-ifeoma/ |

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has alleged that fraud committed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, led to the victory of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu. Kwankwaso alleged that INEC fraudulently allocated votes to Tinubu during the just-concluded presidential election. In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Kwankwaso pointed out that Nigerians no longer liked the All Progressives Congress, APC. He noted that the NNPP has a bright future because “big politicians” are interested in the party. According to Kwankwaso: “Another interesting thing is that more people, particularly big politicians, are seriously indicating interest in our party, and they are willing to make necessary contributions to move the party forward. Take a look at our rivals, particularly the PDP. “They are in a serious crisis, particularly as it concerns its leaders. In Kano State, some thought PDP will be of help to them, or game changer, but they were disappointed woefully. Same with the APC. “All these votes you see INEC mentioned were fraudulently allocated to its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. The truth is that Nigerians don’t like APC anymore, hence our party is the one that has the future.” https://dailypost.ng/2023/04/03/presidential-election-inec-fraudulently-allocated-votes-to-tinubu-kwankwaso/ |

Two faltering behemoths come to blows in Tuesday's Premier League battle at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea play host to Liverpool on the back of demoralising defeats for both sides. Graham Potter's men were put to the sword 2-0 by Aston Villa on Saturday, a few hours after the Reds were swept aside 4-1 by Manchester City. The international break undoubtedly came at the worst time for a Chelsea side who had begun to ease the pressure on Potter's shoulders in March, but Aston Villa had no difficulties picking up where they left off before the two-week hiatus. Seeking to build on a streak of three wins and a draw when Aston Villa made the long journey south, Chelsea reverted to an all-too familiar version of themselves under Potter, succumbing to sublime goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn while wasting an array of gilt-edged chances in front of goal. A toxic atmosphere was apparent at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea fell into the bottom half of the Premier League table - now occupying 11th place, wholly unacceptable for a club of their stature and financial firepower - but Potter continues to receive reassuring pats on the back from Todd Boehly. Just how long the owners will continue to support Potter through the rut remains a mystery, as the Blues remain 10 points adrift of a place in the top four - a chasm which could increase if Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur enjoy positive results before the end of the gameweek. Almost everything that could go wrong for Chelsea on Saturday did go wrong, and only one of the hosts' last five Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge has ended in victory, but their upcoming visitors have little reason for unbridled optimism either. |

In a repeat of February's EFL Cup final, top-four rivals Newcastle United and Manchester United renew hostilities at St James' Park in Sunday afternoon's Premier League showdown. Only two places and three points separate the two behemoths in the standings at present, as the Red Devils sit pretty in third while the Magpies knock on the door in fifth. Title talk may have been somewhat premature, but Newcastle's Champions League destiny is in their own hands heading into the final straight - largely thanks to Tottenham Hotspur's abysmal period as well as their upturn in fortunes just before the international break. With no wins from five games between February and the beginning of March, the Magpies were not feeling the love during the Valentine's period, but Eddie Howe's crop scooped a pair of 2-1 victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest to reignite their glimmer of hope. A delicate Emmanuel Dennis chip was in vain at the City Ground, as Alexander Isak's brace kept Newcastle within touching distance of Tottenham, who are only two points better off than Howe's side in fourth place having played two games more. From a team that kept clean sheets for fun to one that have conceded in their last eight matches in all competitions, Newcastle are not the defensive force that they once were during the earlier stages of the campaign, and only two of their last five Premier League home games have ended in victory. However, only Liverpool have got the better of Howe's men on their own turf this term - and even then the 10 men of Newcastle gave the Reds quite the run for their money - so Man United must still have their wits about them against a Magpies side with an overriding desire for vengeance. |

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) The nation may soon experience total power outage if the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) makes good its threat to stop transmission of power to generating and distributing companies respectively over debts running to billions of naira owed it. The TCN ultimatum came through an order No.TCN /ISO//MO/2023/001 dated March 20, signed and issued by Engr Edmund Eje, on behalf of its operator, the Nigeria Electricity Market (NEM) in which it accused the DisCos of breaching the conditions of market rules and market agreements. In the statement, the operator stated that, “In line with the provisions of the market rule the MO gives a grace of 14 days within which all MPs must fully remedy their breaches or face full market sanction.” To put it in proper perspective, the TCN in its role as the transmitter of power is at the nexus of the power sector, connecting both the Generating Companies (GenCos) and the Distributing Companies (DisCos) to the power grid from which power consumers in the country feed for their various uses. Should the TCN carry out its threat to shut down power supply in the country, the amount of damage such could cause to lives, livelihoods, businesses, security and other sectors across the country is unfathomable. The DisCos, in their defence, laid the blame squarely on the federal government. They attribute it to the failure of the government to provide the promised N100 billion subsidy on electricity since the privatisation of the sector in 2013, as well as some necessary information and data on the power privation process. The Director, Research and Advocacy of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), the umbrella body of the DisCos, Sunday Oduntan, stated that “fundamentally, the basis of privatization was flawed from the beginning due to conditions that were not met by the federal government while expecting the DisCos to meet their performance obligations.” The statement further added that “Not only were the investors shortchanged because of insufficient and unreliable data that was provided by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to them during the privatization process, the government also committed to and failed to deliver on DisCos debt free financial book, payment of Ministries, Department and Agencies’ electricity debts.” Against this background, there is indeed no gainsaying that the power sector is beset with myriad issues and that between the federal government and the players in the sector, there are enough blames to go around. But we believe that Nigerians are not interested in the blame games as far as the provision of power is concerned in the country. When the idea of privatising the power sector came up, Nigerians were told that it was the panacea for the abysmal state of power in the country which seemed intractable. Privatisation of the state-owned power sector will attract much-needed capital, expertise and best practices to the running of the power sector thereby ending the years of epileptic power supply in the country, we were told. But 10 years after the privatisation of the power sector, we are not only far from achieving the goals of the exercise; we are indeed regressing in the power supply situation in the country. This is despite a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that the federal government has subsidised electricity supply in the country to the tune of N35.27 billion. We are reportedly oscillating between 5000 to 7000 megawatts of electricity, hardly adequate for a country of about 200 million. It is not encouraging that the 11 DisCos and three GenCos are in various stages of distress, tottering dangerously on the brink of collapse. They are burdened by under-capitalization, debts and technical issues which hamper their ability to deliver as expected by Nigerians. It is also not surprising that five of them have been taken over by banks. All this calls inevitably for the total review of the power privatisation programme with a view to repositioning the sector for better performance as expected by Nigerians. In resolving the issues besetting the power sector, the first step is in realising that the privatisation exercise as intended has clearly not met its objectives. In this regard, throwing more money into the sector in the form of subsidies and recapitalization of the DisCos and GenCos will hardly solve the humongous issues in the sector. Indeed with the takeover of DisCos by banks and the installation of new management, the identified issues are on the way to the self-correction necessary to reform and revamp the DisCos. Although the DisCos have kicked against this development labelling it as “renationalisation”, their position can hardly be tenable against the background of their abysmally poor performance. The federal government has explained that the ongoing process, whereby the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), commercial banks and BPE are taking over the GenCos and installing new managements is a necessary one which will attract new capital and foreign partnerships into the sector. With this development, the federal government can draw down on the 500 million dollar facility made available by the World Bank to revamp the sector. At the end of the day, due to its critical importance, a functionally efficient power sector is indispensable to the country’s development and all hands must be on deck to deliver this objective. https://dailytrust.com/review-power-privatisation/ |
Manchester City will already have been concerned with the touch-and-go nature of Erling Haaland's groin injury and then they got the news of Phil Foden's appendix surgery on Sunday. Foden trained with England on Saturday, but was having surgery to remove his appendix on Sunday, which will rule him out for at least the Premier League clash with Liverpool next week. Given that Foden has only just undergone surgery, he could be out for longer and nobody will want to rush his recovery. With Liverpool waiting next, City will have to reshuffle their attack, but Pep Guardiola knows he has the consolation of two world-class players waiting in the wings to fill in for Foden. |

Rev Musa Mairimi, the minister in charge of ECWA Church, Buda two, Kasuwa Magani in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State was on Thursday shot dead by bandits. Rev John Joseph Hayab, the Kaduna State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) who confirmed the incident on Saturday explained that the attackers stormed the community on Thursday and killed the clergyman in his residence. He lamented that the bandits also abducted the deceased’s wife. Rev Hayab further avowed that over 100 people abducted from various local government areas such as Kauru, Jaba, Kachia, Kagarko and Kajuru are still in captivity for over six months now. According to him: “The insecurity, especially killing and kidnapping of innocent souls is so disturbing that it is no longer news because many are left to carry their crosses; while many have been killed in the hands of the terrorists, many homes have been completely destroyed with valuables and nothing is being done to alleviate the sufferings of the common people affected.” He lamented that CAN is worried by the alarming rate of kidnapping of innocent souls at this hard time when people can hardly put food on their table. The most disturbing of the situation, according to him, is that the government was not doing enough to ensure the killings in the state are curtailed to enable rural dwellers to go about their normal lives and provide for their families. He believed that insecurity was a major problem that hindered many eligible voters from coming out to exercise their franchise of electing candidates of their choice in the just concluded general elections. He called on security agencies to be more proactive in ensuring that society is free from the activities of bandits. https://dailypost.ng/2023/03/25/bandits-kill-clergyman-abduct-wife-in-kaduna/ |
