PoliticsNIS Carpets Former Diplomat Over Comment On Delay Of International Passport by ogododo(op): 1:03pm On Apr 04, 2023
The Nigeria Immigration Service has carpeted the former Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Joe Keshi, over his comment that his wife spent nine months on the renewal of the international passport.

Keshi had lamented that it took the NIS nine months to issue his wife’s international passport renewal in Abuja.

Keshi disclosed this on Tuesday in an Arise Television Interview, saying there is a need for behavioural reformation in Nigeria’s agencies, especially the security agents.

He said, “Nigeria security agencies need to learn from the way developed countries handle things.

“It took my wife nine months to get an international passport renewal here in Abuja; I had to call three former Comptrollers of Immigration before it was done”, he lamented.

But, in an interview on Tuesday with DAILY POST, the spokesperson for Nigeria Immigration Service, Deputy Comptroller Tony Akuneme, reacting to Keshi’s allegation, said the delay experienced by Keshi’s wife was due to irregularities in the passport renewal application.

He explained that International passport issuance takes regular six-weeks except in case of irregularities, for instance, names, National Identity Number, NIN, and other discrepancies during application.

He expressed dissatisfaction over the use of third-party and touts for passport applications.

He said applicants could efficiently process all passport-related issues directly online.

“I can assure you that Joe Keshi’s wife has irregularities; I challenge him to a debate on the same television to make him accept the irregularities on her application. Either her NIN or her passport doesn’t synchronize, and we insist both must synchronize before the passport is produced. I challenge Keshi to produce his wife’s form filled, and you can be sure that a third party or touts filled the form.

“At times touts or third parties help make applications. And they do not know that those people use fictitious phone numbers and details to fill out the application, so it takes the Service forever to reach such people when there are issues like NIN irregularities. That is the only situation where an application can take one or two months. Yes, there are issues, and we are trying our best to improve, but it is unbecoming of a high-place diplomat to cast aspersions on a federal government agency just because he has retired; I am sure if he were still an active Ambassador; he won’t make such a statement on television”, he said.

“Most Nigerians who are correcting one error or the other, like their date of birth, names, it takes longer than the regular six weeks for passport issuance. Most times, Nigerians don’t tell you they are changing something; they don’t believe we will find out that applicants are trying to change something from their previous records; we now get into a fix because of lack of full disclosure, and they begin to call Immigration”, he added.

Politics2023: Buhari Delivered His Promise On Credible Polls – Lai Mohammed by ogododo(op): 10:55am On Apr 04, 2023
The Federal Government says President Muhammadu Buhari has delivered on his pledge to leave behind a legacy of free, fair and credible elections in the conduct of 2023 polls.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this in Washington DC during his official engagements with some international media organisations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the minister is in Washington to engage with international media organisations and Think tanks on the just-concluded 2023 polls.

NAN also reports that the minister has so far engaged respectively with the “Washington Post”, Voice of America, Associated Press and Foreign Policy Magazine.

The minister said in fulfilment of the President’s pledge to restore sanity into the electoral process, he resolved that he would not confer special advantage on any political party, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the election.

He said during the past elections, the President ensured that nobody used the security agencies to rig the election in his favour but created a level-playing ground for the elections to take place.

A proof of this resolution is that the President’s party lost the presidential election in Katsina, his home state.

“Equally, the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, lost in his state, Lagos, while the Chairman of the Party, Abdulahi Adamu, lost in Nasarawa State to the Labour Party.

The Director-General of the Campaign Organisation of our party also lost to PDP in Plateau State.

Nothing gives this elections more credence than those facts because there was no rigging in states where our big wigs come from,” he said.

The minister added that APC lost in the four states with the highest number of votes in the elections – Katsina, Kano, Kaduna and Lagos even when they were the ruling party’s controlled states.

Mohammed said the allegations of fraud being bandied by the opposition and naysayers did not add up.

According to the minister, the controversy was generated because of the inability of INEC to upload the results of the Presidential election real time.

PoliticsPDP Yet To Fix Date For NEC Meeting – NWC Member by ogododo(op): 8:51am On Apr 04, 2023
A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the much-anticipated meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The party’s Deputy Youth Leader and NEC member, Timothy Osadolor, in an interview with The PUNCH on Monday said although the party was planning to hold a NEC meeting, a date had yet to be fixed.

The PUNCH learnt on Monday that the meeting, the first under the leadership of the PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, is unlikely to hold until after April 17, a date set aside for the hearing of the suit on the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

Ayu was suspended by his Igyorov ward in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

My Pastoral Work Doesn't Stop Me From Singing Secular Music - Ogun Cleric | Punch
Following his suspension and subsequent decision to step aside in obedience to a court order, Ayu is seeking to vacate the order made by Justice Wilfred of the Benue State High Court in Makurdi.

Damagum, who replaced Ayu in acting capacity in line with the provisions of Section 45 (2) of the PDP Constitution, wasted no time in reversing one of the controversial decisions made by the Ayu-led National Working Committee.

He overturned the decision to refer Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, to the National Disciplinary Committee of the party as well as the suspension party stalwarts, such as the ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; and governors of Katsina and Ekiti states, Ibrahim Shema and Ayo Fayose, respectively.

Damagum is expected to convene a NEC meeting to deliberate on issues concerning the party, including the issues leading to Ayu’s suspension.

Although Damagun denied knowledge of an imminent NEC meeting, telling our reporter that “I am just hearing this from you,” a credible party source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The PUNCH that the meeting was being discussed with no date slated for it yet.

“You know NEC is a big event; party leaders and stakeholders attend from across the country. As a result, there is a need for adequate preparation so that you don’t send invites only to realise that the party was not ready for it. Talks are in progress and a date would be announced as soon as possible.

“I think the new leadership seems to be too much in a hurry and it may have been advised to tread carefully. The substantive National Chairman did not resign; he stepped aside. His suspension is before the court. Whether we like or not, he has his loyalists, some of whom have been very vocal in the media. I think these and other related issues are the reasons a date has not been picked for a NEC meeting,” the source said.

Also speaking, a NEC member, Timothy Osadolor, stated, “It is only natural for NEC meeting to be convened now but there are procedures. You can’t convene a NEC meeting without preparations, security, and all of that. I am sure that once the leadership of the party agrees on these things, a date will be communicated, and notice will be issued. For now, it is still at a discussion level. No tentative date has been fixed for it,” he said.

Efforts to get the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and his deputy, Ibrahim Abdullahi, were not successful as both men neither picked their calls nor responded to messages sent to them on WhatsApp.

PoliticsPresidential Election: INEC Fraudulently Allocated Votes To Tinubu – Kwankwaso by ogododo(op): 9:59am On Apr 03, 2023
The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has alleged that fraud committed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, led to the victory of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Kwankwaso alleged that INEC fraudulently allocated votes to Tinubu during the just-concluded presidential election.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Kwankwaso pointed out that Nigerians no longer liked the All Progressives Congress, APC.

He noted that the NNPP has a bright future because “big politicians” are interested in the party.

According to Kwankwaso: “Another interesting thing is that more people, particularly big politicians, are seriously indicating interest in our party, and they are willing to make necessary contributions to move the party forward. Take a look at our rivals, particularly the PDP.

“They are in a serious crisis, particularly as it concerns its leaders. In Kano State, some thought PDP will be of help to them, or game changer, but they were disappointed woefully. Same with the APC.

“All these votes you see INEC mentioned were fraudulently allocated to its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. The truth is that Nigerians don’t like APC anymore, hence our party is the one that has the future.”

Two faltering behemoths come to blows in Tuesday's Premier League battle at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea play host to Liverpool on the back of demoralising defeats for both sides.

Graham Potter's men were put to the sword 2-0 by Aston Villa on Saturday, a few hours after the Reds were swept aside 4-1 by Manchester City.

The international break undoubtedly came at the worst time for a Chelsea side who had begun to ease the pressure on Potter's shoulders in March, but Aston Villa had no difficulties picking up where they left off before the two-week hiatus.

Seeking to build on a streak of three wins and a draw when Aston Villa made the long journey south, Chelsea reverted to an all-too familiar version of themselves under Potter, succumbing to sublime goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn while wasting an array of gilt-edged chances in front of goal.

A toxic atmosphere was apparent at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea fell into the bottom half of the Premier League table - now occupying 11th place, wholly unacceptable for a club of their stature and financial firepower - but Potter continues to receive reassuring pats on the back from Todd Boehly.

Just how long the owners will continue to support Potter through the rut remains a mystery, as the Blues remain 10 points adrift of a place in the top four - a chasm which could increase if Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur enjoy positive results before the end of the gameweek.

Almost everything that could go wrong for Chelsea on Saturday did go wrong, and only one of the hosts' last five Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge has ended in victory, but their upcoming visitors have little reason for unbridled optimism either.

PoliticsNigeria Has Generated Only 5000 Megawatts Since I Was Born— Femi Otedola Laments by ogododo(op): 10:04am On Apr 01, 2023
To say that it is ‘appalling and disheartening’ that Nigeria’s power sector is yet to witness the needed improvement for greater impact on the people and the economy despite the huge amount of money sunk into it by successive governments is an understatement.

That, however, was how the Executive Chairman, Board of Directors, Geregu Power Plc, Mr Femi Otedola described the state of the power sector during the week.

Otedola who though, who acknowledged that the sector has its challenges, noted however that, they are surmountable problems. The major problem he pointed out, is transmission and everyone wonders as he did, why it has seemed impossible for successive governments to fix the issue of transmission.

Baring his mind on the sector while speaking at the “Closing Gong ceremony” and commemoration of the first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company on the floor of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) in Lagos, Otedola revealed the hard truth that if the power sector was well organised it would be cheaper and have a lot of positive impact on the manufacturing sector as well as the entire economy of the country.

The power sector has a lot of problems but they’re surmountable problems. It’s a matter of leadership in the country and willpower. If power is well organised, it’s even cheaper.

“We will get there, it’s a matter of time.”

The business mogul queried why it’s difficult for the country to improve on the amount of power it generates when an individual like Aliko Dangote, has built 2000 megawatts for his plants. “Aliko, an individual has built 2000 megawatts of power for cement, fertilizer plants and refinery. And the country where I was born, has only 5000 megawatts. “So it’s appalling and disheartening that all the successive governments have failed in this regard but I believe we are now at the stage where the power sector will get a lot of attention and priority. We have new plants still sitting idle that the government built years ago and the real problem is transmission, there is a need to look in this direction,” he said.

He further said that Geregu was taking necessary steps to expand its capacity to deliver improved performance and maximise shareholders’ wealth, stressing that the challenges in the sector could be tackled if the government sets its priority right. For starters, he believes that the best way would be the engagement of investors in the sector.

“Any government that thinks well will look for entrepreneurs in this sector that have committed so much capital and time and let them sort out the problem.

“If the government then did not invite Aliko to build a cement factory and create an enabling environment, today we’ll still be importing cement.”

While celebrating Geregu’s achievements on its first anniversary as a listed company, Otedola emphasised that for any company to sustain its wealth, there was a need for it to be listed on the stock exchange.

“To sustain wealth, you need to list your company on the stock exchange”, he stated, adding, “We’ve come with a lot of firsts; the first power company to list on the Exchange, the first power company to embark on an aggressive 300 % expansion drive; the first company to release its results on the stock market.”

In a related development, Doron Grupper, a director of the power holding company, who is satisfied with the achievements of the power company so far, disclosed that Geregu boasts of professionals and good management to increase its capacity. “I’ve been with Geregu for years now since we started the power station. I think this power station according to my experience, works on natural gas. We have a great team of professionals, and good management to increase our capacity.

“We are producing today, 450 megawatts but we have the potential for the next two years to increase to 1300 megawatts. We have the money, and we have the people but we need the assistance of the government of Nigeria to solve some problems with the gas issues.

“We have a huge potential to increase and to contribute to Nigeria in the power sector and to increase the quantities and capacity of electricity to the people of Nigeria.”

Grupper who spoke to Arise, TV correspondent, on the sideline of the NGX event on Tuesday, stated that the gas challenges have to do with the price of gas which he noted, is still low so there’s a need to increase it. The challenges also have to do with the quantity of gas and, “the pressure of the pipeline; we need to increase it. These are the three main issues that the government need to take care of and to assist us to increase the capacity.”

“I hope that in the near future, we will come into a new era of electricity here in Nigeria,” he added.

On how much investments have been put in Geregu, he said, “When we bought the power station back in 2015 we produced 113 megawatts. We made a major overhaul to get to 450. Now, we are doing a major overhaul again…more than 250 million dollars altogether.”

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Newcastle United Vs Manchester United (2 - 0) On 2nd April 2023 by ogododo(op): 8:08pm On Mar 31, 2023
In a repeat of February's EFL Cup final, top-four rivals Newcastle United and Manchester United renew hostilities at St James' Park in Sunday afternoon's Premier League showdown.

Only two places and three points separate the two behemoths in the standings at present, as the Red Devils sit pretty in third while the Magpies knock on the door in fifth.

Title talk may have been somewhat premature, but Newcastle's Champions League destiny is in their own hands heading into the final straight - largely thanks to Tottenham Hotspur's abysmal period as well as their upturn in fortunes just before the international break.

With no wins from five games between February and the beginning of March, the Magpies were not feeling the love during the Valentine's period, but Eddie Howe's crop scooped a pair of 2-1 victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest to reignite their glimmer of hope.

A delicate Emmanuel Dennis chip was in vain at the City Ground, as Alexander Isak's brace kept Newcastle within touching distance of Tottenham, who are only two points better off than Howe's side in fourth place having played two games more.

From a team that kept clean sheets for fun to one that have conceded in their last eight matches in all competitions, Newcastle are not the defensive force that they once were during the earlier stages of the campaign, and only two of their last five Premier League home games have ended in victory.

However, only Liverpool have got the better of Howe's men on their own turf this term - and even then the 10 men of Newcastle gave the Reds quite the run for their money - so Man United must still have their wits about them against a Magpies side with an overriding desire for vengeance.

•LP: We’re not part of insurrection plans

•Such plan’ll be major setback –Agbakoba

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the Department of State Services (DSS) to disclose identities of those planning to instal an interim government.

On Wednesday, the secret police, in a statement by its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunaya, said it had confirmed a plot by some key players to install an interim government and stop the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being inaugurated on May 29.

The DSS said the plot includes embarking on violent protests nationwide to engineer the declaration of a state of emergency as well as securing frivolous court injunctions to stall the inauguration.

But Atiku, in a statement by his media aide, Timi Frank, alleged that the alarm of a plot to prevent Tinubu from being sworn in as president was a calculated move to arrest the PDP presidential candidate and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and clampdown on protesters before May 29.

The DSS’ purported intelligence is fake. It is a plot to crackdown on protesters and arrest opposition political leaders before May 29,” he said.

We have credible information that the DSS issued the statement in preparation for its planned disruption of ongoing protest by Nigerians who are demonstrating peacefully to demand justice and the restoration of their stolen mandate.

Where was their intelligence when the Independent National Electoral Commission and Mahmood Yakubu were compromised to rig the 2023 general election?,” he asked.

He contended “Nigerians have been under siege by bandits, kidnappers and terrorists for a long time now, but the DSS never gave intelligence to foil kidnapping, heinous attacks, maiming and killing of innocent Nigerians.

“The only time you see the DSS coming up to talk about intelligence is whenever Nigerians are preparing to either protest against obnoxious government policies, rules, human rights abuses or carrying out lawful political activities.

“The DSS must stop this method of intimidating Nigerians, especially politicians, whenever they want to exercise their constitutional rights.

“In fact, we dare the DSS or any other security outfit in the country to arrest Atiku and Obi before May 29 and see the wrath of Nigerians.”

He called on protesters not to be intimidated by “this DSS’ fake intelligence of a phantom ING plot.”

He enjoined the UK, US and EU to immediately call on the Nigerian government to allow Nigerians to exercise their democratic rights which are to ensure that the stolen mandate of the Nigerian people is restored through peaceful protests and the judicial process.

“We are aware that the DSS is planning to sponsor counter-protests across the country to clash with the peaceful protesters and use that as an excuse to clampdown on them.

“We dare the DSS to name those involved in the phantom plot if they genuinely have the ‘intelligence’ about a plot to instigate an ING so the world will know those who plan to stop the inauguration of the president.

“But we know they are not being sincere. This is often their style whenever they want to engage in propaganda and do a hatchet job.

“On the contrary, let them name the purported politicians involved in the plot. Their real intent is to clampdown on protesters and arrest Atiku and Obi before May 29. Nothing more.

“We use this opportunity to call on the international community to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the DSS to order and stop them from meddling in the democratic process.

“The DSS is the one that is about to scuttle democracy in the country at this moment by plotting to arrest Atiku and Obi and other top opposition politicians,” he said.

He admonished the DSS not to allow the agency to be used to truncate democracy or as purveyors of fake news.

He claimed that the DSS had recently attempted albeit unsuccessfully to arrest and prosecute the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele for allegedly financing terrorism in the country.

“They later pulled back following the outcry that trailed the move. This is another of such hoaxes and it is one too many,” he said.

•Count us out

Reacting yesterday, LP denied plotting an insurrection.

Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson of the party, described the development as a “conspiracy against the state” in which the LP had no part.

He, however, accused the DSS of not reacting to attacks on his party members during the elections but only speaking afterward.

“When we went on the streets to campaign and our members were maimed and attacked, where was the DSS? When our member was killed, where was the DSS? When MC Oluomo made inflammatory statements saying people of certain tribes should not come to vote in Lagos, nobody said anything. In fact, it was alluded that the statement was a joke. He wasn’t invited by the DSS,” Tanko said.

“Is it now that the Nigerian people are speaking to defend the sovereignty of the country that the DSS is making statements?

“For us, we are following the due provisions of the federal republic of Nigeria. Protests are part of the democratic system. In fact, the DSS and the security agencies should come out and protect us even if we are on the streets protesting.

“We are ready to follow the rules of engagement in our democratic setting. That is why we went to court. We are not making any inflammatory statements or mobilising anybody to come out on the streets to fight.

“We are not part of any insurrection plans whatsoever. But what I am saying is that we would protect the interest of Nigerian people based on the provisions of the law which provides that where you are hurting, you have the right to protest and that you would do so with the defence and protection of the Nigerian security apparatus. That is what we would do but we would not support any insurrection in any way.”

•Interim government unconstitutional

Meanwhile, Olisa Agbakoba, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has said there is no provision for an interim government in the country’s constitution.

The senior lawyer said “the gravest possible consequences must be applied” to those allegedly behind the plot.

Reacting in a statement yesterday, Agbakoba said the “secret plans” must be rejected by all Nigerians.

He said parties aggrieved by the presidential election should approach the courts for possible redress.

“It is shocking to learn from the Department of State Security that secret plans are underway to undermine Nigeria’s democratic process and transition, by arrangements of what is described as an interim government. This will be a major set-back and we must all resist.

“I suggest that the gravest possible consequences must be applied to all who are associated with this treasonable intent. The general elections have held, albeit under the most challenging circumstance.

“But a president-elect has emerged and we must respect and accept this as fact. At least for now. All leading Presidential candidates have approached the courts with grounds of complaint concerning what they consider as electoral irregularities.

“If the presidential candidates have accepted the democratic process by lodging petitions before the courts, then it is very difficult to understand upon what basis anyone considers that an interim government is a viable and legal alternative. We must all reject this nonsense and respect our Constitution, which has no provision for interim arrangements.

“As the President-elect is sworn into office on May 29, the judicial process will ultimately render a decision. As Nigerians, we must turn to the Courts to render a decision on the petitions before them. The Judicial process will certainly carry a huge responsibility in the process of democratic consolidation.”

Agbakoba added that the “contraption referred to as interim government has no place in our lives and our constitution.”

•Avoid treason

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, also described the alleged call for an interim government as an act of treason and synonymous with joining a terrorist group.

“Nigerians, especially youths, must avoid treason in promoting any so-called interim government, a high crime, on the same scale as joining Boko Haram, ISWAP or any terror group. All gains will be lost,” he wrote on Twitter.

PoliticsReview Power Privatisation - Daily Trust Editorial by ogododo(op): 8:49am On Mar 29, 2023
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)

The nation may soon experience total power outage if the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) makes good its threat to stop transmission of power to generating and distributing companies respectively over debts running to billions of naira owed it.

The TCN ultimatum came through an order No.TCN /ISO//MO/2023/001 dated March 20, signed and issued by Engr Edmund Eje, on behalf of its operator, the Nigeria Electricity Market (NEM) in which it accused the DisCos of breaching the conditions of market rules and market agreements.

In the statement, the operator stated that, “In line with the provisions of the market rule the MO gives a grace of 14 days within which all MPs must fully remedy their breaches or face full market sanction.”

To put it in proper perspective, the TCN in its role as the transmitter of power is at the nexus of the power sector, connecting both the Generating Companies (GenCos) and the Distributing Companies (DisCos) to the power grid from which power consumers in the country feed for their various uses. Should the TCN carry out its threat to shut down power supply in the country, the amount of damage such could cause to lives, livelihoods, businesses, security and other sectors across the country is unfathomable.

The DisCos, in their defence, laid the blame squarely on the federal government. They attribute it to the failure of the government to provide the promised N100 billion subsidy on electricity since the privatisation of the sector in 2013, as well as some necessary information and data on the power privation process.

The Director, Research and Advocacy of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), the umbrella body of the DisCos, Sunday Oduntan, stated that “fundamentally, the basis of privatization was flawed from the beginning due to conditions that were not met by the federal government while expecting the DisCos to meet their performance obligations.”

The statement further added that “Not only were the investors shortchanged because of insufficient and unreliable data that was provided by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to them during the privatization process, the government also committed to and failed to deliver on DisCos debt free financial book, payment of Ministries, Department and Agencies’ electricity debts.”

Against this background, there is indeed no gainsaying that the power sector is beset with myriad issues and that between the federal government and the players in the sector, there are enough blames to go around.

But we believe that Nigerians are not interested in the blame games as far as the provision of power is concerned in the country. When the idea of privatising the power sector came up, Nigerians were told that it was the panacea for the abysmal state of power in the country which seemed intractable.

Privatisation of the state-owned power sector will attract much-needed capital, expertise and best practices to the running of the power sector thereby ending the years of epileptic power supply in the country, we were told.

But 10 years after the privatisation of the power sector, we are not only far from achieving the goals of the exercise; we are indeed regressing in the power supply situation in the country. This is despite a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that the federal government has subsidised electricity supply in the country to the tune of N35.27 billion.

We are reportedly oscillating between 5000 to 7000 megawatts of electricity, hardly adequate for a country of about 200 million.

It is not encouraging that the 11 DisCos and three GenCos are in various stages of distress, tottering dangerously on the brink of collapse. They are burdened by under-capitalization, debts and technical issues which hamper their ability to deliver as expected by Nigerians.

It is also not surprising that five of them have been taken over by banks.

All this calls inevitably for the total review of the power privatisation programme with a view to repositioning the sector for better performance as expected by Nigerians. In resolving the issues besetting the power sector, the first step is in realising that the privatisation exercise as intended has clearly not met its objectives. In this regard, throwing more money into the sector in the form of subsidies and recapitalization of the DisCos and GenCos will hardly solve the humongous issues in the sector.

Indeed with the takeover of DisCos by banks and the installation of new management, the identified issues are on the way to the self-correction necessary to reform and revamp the DisCos.

Although the DisCos have kicked against this development labelling it as “renationalisation”, their position can hardly be tenable against the background of their abysmally poor performance.

The federal government has explained that the ongoing process, whereby the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), commercial banks and BPE are taking over the GenCos and installing new managements is a necessary one which will attract new capital and foreign partnerships into the sector. With this development, the federal government can draw down on the 500 million dollar facility made available by the World Bank to revamp the sector.

At the end of the day, due to its critical importance, a functionally efficient power sector is indispensable to the country’s development and all hands must be on deck to deliver this objective.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Manchester City Vs Liverpool (4 - 1) On 1st April 2023 by ogododo(op): 4:21pm On Mar 27, 2023
Manchester City will already have been concerned with the touch-and-go nature of Erling Haaland's groin injury and then they got the news of Phil Foden's appendix surgery on Sunday.

Foden trained with England on Saturday, but was having surgery to remove his appendix on Sunday, which will rule him out for at least the Premier League clash with Liverpool next week. Given that Foden has only just undergone surgery, he could be out for longer and nobody will want to rush his recovery.

With Liverpool waiting next, City will have to reshuffle their attack, but Pep Guardiola knows he has the consolation of two world-class players waiting in the wings to fill in for Foden.

Rev Musa Mairimi, the minister in charge of ECWA Church, Buda two, Kasuwa Magani in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State was on Thursday shot dead by bandits.

Rev John Joseph Hayab, the Kaduna State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) who confirmed the incident on Saturday explained that the attackers stormed the community on Thursday and killed the clergyman in his residence.

He lamented that the bandits also abducted the deceased’s wife.

Rev Hayab further avowed that over 100 people abducted from various local government areas such as Kauru, Jaba, Kachia, Kagarko and Kajuru are still in captivity for over six months now.

According to him: “The insecurity, especially killing and kidnapping of innocent souls is so disturbing that it is no longer news because many are left to carry their crosses; while many have been killed in the hands of the terrorists, many homes have been completely destroyed with valuables and nothing is being done to alleviate the sufferings of the common people affected.”

He lamented that CAN is worried by the alarming rate of kidnapping of innocent souls at this hard time when people can hardly put food on their table.

The most disturbing of the situation, according to him, is that the government was not doing enough to ensure the killings in the state are curtailed to enable rural dwellers to go about their normal lives and provide for their families.

He believed that insecurity was a major problem that hindered many eligible voters from coming out to exercise their franchise of electing candidates of their choice in the just concluded general elections.

He called on security agencies to be more proactive in ensuring that society is free from the activities of bandits.
