mikeansy: In the real sense of the word "some" forms of stealing can qualify as corruption. Some cant.
E.g. A public officer diverting public funds to private accounts qualify as both stealing and corruption
A public officer using his office to ease the process of getting his relative employed qualifies as corruption but that's not necessarily stealing
But an armed robber waiting for vehicles with guns and robbing people is pure stealing but that is not corruption.
The essence of the word corrupt or corruption assumes some level of responsibility and dignity that is being tarnished or adulterated due to some malpractices. Nobody looks up to a thief with some dignity or expect them to operate on a higher moral pedestal that is why it is out of place to describe a thief with the word corrupt.
Hence those who try to distinguish between the word stealing and corruption are not in anyway trivialising corruption. If anything they are emphasizing the enormity of what is going on in public offices in Nigeria when they try to draw a distinction between stealing and corruption. They are arguing that the seriousness of siphoning public funds into private accounts gets downplayed with the word corruption when in truth what is happening is outright stealing.
In 2006 Nuhu Ribadu made a similar argument about Sani Yerima of Zamfara State while accusing Governors of Corruption. In the case of Zamfara he emphasized that what is going on there is outright stealing without the involvement of any 3rd parties because in his words Sani Yerima was simply diverting State funds directly from State Accounts to private accounts. He is not even disguising it by setting up contactors with fronts like you currently have in Lagos where Tinubu's proxy companies do all sorts of work for the Lagos State Government and inflating cost without being subject to competition.
So eventhough in terms of technicalities of English language "Stealing is not corruption" may be wrong. I understand the sentiments behind the argument. There is some truth in it. What goes on in public offices in Nigeria is stealing but in most developed countries you have corruption in public offices! So u mean,Stealing is corruptn but nt all corruptn is stealing hence should be treated in context.....whether it is stealing or corruptn...we don't want any... |

Angoni: So when the people in the North jubilated after their Islamic leaders and dear Emirs decided to make sharia supreme law in the North what really did they expect? A Caliphate, right? Out of Sharia, emerges Boko Haram the tool for establishing a caliphate, and the people complain? What are they complaining about? Burnt villages and a bombed mosques? When northern youths were bombing and burning churches, killing Christians, that was the time to complain not now, the snake you raised grown too big and is no longer tamable; will turn and bite anyone near it. And remember Imam Buhari said attack on Boko Haram is attack on the North, so tell me something you bigots, you want GEJ to attack the North? Never ever a smart thing to make a government ungovernable.......you pay the consequences sooner or later. You have a point there brother...honestly...but let's remove d North and score President Jonathan on d rest of Nigeria...He hasn't done well..honestly. |

dablazor: more of this from the international community please!... I never wanted Buhari to rule our great nation... but right now, he would be a better alternative, the incumbent seems incapable!, Nigeria has being disgraced, everyone thinks Nigerians are just like their president. the Jonathan administration is clueless, discombobulated, the president is incompetent, maybe this whole blind eye to pressing matters by him is intentional or not i cant even say, but his faults, mis-judgments, shortcomings and inability to make the right decisions are egregious and its a trend! and to think he has a PhD rubbishes the Nigerian educational system, Even a simpleton would do things differently - give me a five year old pls! Our economy is sinking like a 700 pound metal resting on a muddy quicksand, the state of security is a record low (our military has metamorphosed into a shadow of its former self; just imagine, Nigerian soldiers running from battle?, corruption has spiraled, we are being disgraced by the international community (read foreign news and blogs!!!) ; technically we are soap-opera to them, a laughing stock... and u think GEJ is still the man? I hate talking about my President this way, but let us face it, our president lacks basic leadership qualities, as if that is not enough, he crowned this with a clueless approach, we cant just keep pretending everything is okay, no, its not! the man we have in the driving sit of our national affairs is driving us into doom.... lets be frank, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is clueless and he is not the right man for Nigeria. Lets be human beings, because the insurgency in northern Nigeria isn't affecting our families dont mean we should turn a blind eye, how are we better than the Northerners if we choose to ignore the bloodsheds based on some vendetta we have against the north? Some say; 'bokoharam is just a way the north is trying to get power back to the north, they are just trying to frustrate his rule' if thats true (which i doubt, the Northerners are the ones dying), why is he the president if he cant hold the responsible accountable!? he is the Commander in chief! how has he lived up to that? has he prosecuted anyone? has he sacked anyone? what boldstep has he made that says 'hey! i am the president!' no one should be able to make a country ungovernable for a President that knows what he is doing, he is the president! lets call a spade a spade, he cant rule this country, he has failed, its his sixth year for God sake, why give him another four? so he could finish what he started? We are Nigerians, atleast for now, that is what we are, and take it or leave it, it might seem so far away now, but sooner or later it would come knocking at your door, someone u love might be next.. WE CANT AFFORD THE LUXURY OF ANOTHER FOUR YEARS FROM THIS MAN.. NOOOO! WE THE YOUTHS SHOULD PLS RISE UP AND BE RATIONAL, IF THE OLD GEEZERS IN POWER WOULD PLAY WITH OUR FUTURE, LETS KICK EM OUT, THEY WOULD ALL DIE ONE DAY AND WE WOULD BE LEFT TO REPAIR THE FAILED NATION. Beggars are not choosers, Lets give another person a chance, i don't care if its an Abacha reincarnation, as long as its democracy! we need a change of government! Give Me Anything But Jonathan. You are a pride to HumanHood and a true Nigerian Citizen with blood flowing in his veins(with d way some people say nonsense on dis forum,I wonder if its d same blood flowing in their veins) and kindness in ur hearts...I also belonged to d group of people who were willing to vote President Jonathan and his cronies a second time...But to be honest, with recent happenings and d damning situation of things...I will be a damn fool,a blind bartimaeus and an hypocrite if I vote for President Jonathan and his Cronies whose government I utterly, totally and completely renounce, reject and denounce...it's a pity things got this way,President Jonathan has never really contested or won an electn,d 2011 electn was just a shenanighan ,he had power thrust upon him, hence his inability to do well, well he has tried his best but Nigeria can no longer depend on a man who can never be trusted...I seriously pity Northern Nigeria,I dnt know where Patriotism went too...d freedom fighters and our fathers who fought for independence will weep if they know what Nigeria has become...I am nt campaigning for anyone...BUT I REFUSE TO CONTINUE BEING FOOLED,CHEATED AND SHORTCHANGED...PDP isn't what we need @ d moment,APC is nt d answer,...we need Visionary leaders that's all. |

wildguy: Two days ago, on my way home from work around 9pm, I was stopped by some police men for carrying a laptop. The mistake I made was I did not have the receipt and my ID on me. They put me in a danfo bus and headed to their station. On the way they picked up anybody they saw that had a bag on them. There was even a guy that had a laptop with him with his ID card and receipt that they picked "cause he was walking around with a laptop alone". They seized all our phones till we got to the police station.
When we got to the police station they separated those of us that had laptops from those that didn't. All of us with laptops were branded yahoo boys. They told us to turn on our systems so they can analyse what was on the system. When I switched on my own they saw visual studio with codes and sql server open (I am a developer) and they concluded that that was the software that I use in scamming my clients. After punching and slapping me for not telling them the truth of how I do my operation (they opened my yahoomail account and saw nothing that suggested that I was a yahoo guy), they packed my bag with my laptop and locked me in a cell(there were about 20 guys in the cell). They allowed me to make some calls before they locked me up.
My folks later came to bail me out around 2 in the morning and can you imagine that after collecting money for bail they asked for money from me to collect my belongings that was with them (They said I had to pay for the fuel money)
I got home and I was thinking
a. Are we saying that someone with a laptop cannot work around with it, even if the person has a receipt and an ID card? b. How many people have they kept in the cell without any just reason or just cause "they were walking alone"? c. Is there no agency that punishes law enforcers for abusing their power? d. What training do the officers go through for them to separate a developer, photo editor, graphics designer from a yahoo guy? e. How do we want to develop ourselves in the field of ICT when everybody that carries a laptop is called a yahoo guy? I am waiting for d day one of them will fall into my hands...I will deal with him mercilessly...this guys are worse than goats...they are so dumb...my neighbour had a runaway sales girl so d girl's guardian reported @ d police station...we went together,on getting there, without any investigatn..she was branded a suspect...as well as d other people who has shops in d complex where my neighbour's shop is...d anuohia that interrogated us said and I quote..."If dis girl isn't found within two days,I will go to dt complex and pack all of them to the station as suspects...d ode was forming detective for us...we paid money to write statements...these are guys who barely speak good English...I dey tell you,if one way or d oda one of them falls into my hands,he will wail,I will treat him d way they treat people....de police profession is filled with fools and retards...just because they have guns and uniform...no doubt, there are some of them who make you want to be a police man, like my cousin who has a university degree and decided to join d force...most of these guys are poorly trained...I think d government needs to review their training and turn d retards among them to just guards and watchmen with no guns and cuffs...just baton and torches... |

Whynotthetruth: Why not remove prejudice and then sit to understand the system very well before analyzing ...Do Nigeria exist in isolation of other countries? Can we run an economy devoid of interaction with other economies ? What's the price of this product in other economies considering their GDP, per capita income, refining base, manufacturing prowess of the economy I am not saying building refineries here isn't the best but given the current situation, what's the way out Why do you think petroleum price is same all over the country ? is it magic or cluelessness of importers, marketers etc Look,I agree with all d points u raised..we definitely can't exist in isolation, but what I know is dis,we can do better than many countries if we really want to...I know and understand why Nigeria can't arbitrarily fix fuel price in isolation to international price,I think I quite understand how d forces work,I can't blame d marketers and importers..neither am I saying they are clueless..in situations..d people I will never blame are d players along d production/delivery chain...yet,I will not absolve them of all faults,no,they are part of d problem, yes they are, have you ever asked urself, where d so-called crude oil is even refined,is it d US,is it Venezuela,is it Iran, even d Nigerian government knows why it can't divulge such information, but a right thinking mind will know, there is no proper reason why we can't refine fuel here,...d Leaders are d culprit, that's why I said,OPEC is a cartel,I didn't even say it,its a fact..I will not be deceived myself,d powers at play in d petroleum issue seems to be powerful but not beyond what our leaders can do,do u know au much Nigeria makes from oil,do u know much is been remitted into d treasury,..look,markets buy petrol at less than N97 but sell at N97 cos dts d national fixed price,I am in no way saying,d players in d oil industry are retards but I know they are pawns in d bigger game than we know... |

Dts international price fixed by OPEC abeg,av u asked urself why all of a sudden,d price of oil has reduced sharply...do u know OPEC was originally a cartel and maybe still is headed by Saudi Arabia,d largest Oil exporter in d world...look.who says Nigeria can't sell oil at our own predetermined price,Shale Oil production increased in d US and u know America, they don't care who OPEC is,Saudi Arabia flooded d market with Brent Oil that is our crude oil,and reduced d price, what we have now is d resultant effect..btw..which one is refined petrol...d only universal price is one crude oil...countries determine how much they sell to their citizens...I don't even know why I responded to this sef in d first place.. |

The reason petrol price is same maiduguri , lagos, PH, Ogoja is because subsidy does not cover only import pricing but transport also. FG pays the transport cost of all these trucks you see at Apapa
The sharp practices/ corruption within the sector cuts across marketers, depot owners, PPRA, Truck owners, truck drivers etc. Imagine a driver loads products for Maiduguri and is paid 500k then he diverts the product Shagamu. .... Nigerians are extremely corrupt. everybody part pf the supply chain is part of the cabal. They would be quick to embark on strike snd starve supplies causing scarcity when you want to step in
Refined product Subsidy has to go. It was the right move by GEJ two years back but without enlightenment of the masses. We need to deregulate the downstream sector. In a year we can have over 5 off the shelf small scale refining modules with subsidy out of the way. At the point Govt can subsidize the cost of crude to the local refineries and drive the petrol cost even below 97naira.
In all, there will be competing refineries, many petrochemical companies, vast employment, cheaper petrol price in the long term, positive effect on our foreign exchange, more vibrant economy.
