lexi28: first of all. confirm that the earthing in the house or location is OK. the SPD has 3 terminals, +ve, -ve and ground. if you have a common connection for the DC side of things, like a bus bar. you connect a wire from the positive side to the Positive terminal of the SPD, then connect a wire from the negative bus bar to the negative terminal of the SPD, then connect a wire from the ground terminal of the SPD to a working earth connection spot.
the bus bar makes this connection easier, but it you do not have one, locating the common points maybe confusing for some.
that's all that is to it. if a surge occurs on the DC side of the system, the SPD "diverts" that and prevents the proverbial white smoke from your controller. I do not have a bus bar but what I have done in my case was to shove both the PV and SPD cables in the DC breaker input, I don't know if the SPD will still do it's work with such setup. |

harizonal123: I finally bought a sunfit agm battery of 12v200ah as a back up plan for my toplight gel battery. I don't intend to combine both cos of their different chemistry. I am currently doing a design to enable both charge and supply separately with the aid of double change over. So that when I am using one the other can be charging & the next day vice versa .I will update when I'm done with my connection Will be good to read your experience on the batteries, I am using sunfit panels and so far so good. |

mank1234: My old battery I bought new behaved in similar fashion. No matter how it's charged once charging source is removed, it race down to 12.4V (24.8V for series). Apparently, it was old battery rebranded and sold as new. At C20, I get only 120AH from a 200AH battery before inverter shutdown at 21V cutoff.
Two fairly used ones I got from kiekie1 is far better. It charges and maintains 13.2V (26.4V) when full and charging source is removed. I think mine may also be having similar issue, when it's connected to charger and fully charged, it reads 27v but if charge source is lost, it goes down to about 25.6v |

mctfopt: Water on the panel can not totally stop generation of power. I'm afraid the standalone system being that close to the building may experience some shadows from it. Check if your connection is ok. I'd suggest you give the solar panels some slight tilt, so that water can run off the panels when it rains. Even if it's 5 degree tilt from the horizontal. I made sure to avoid shadows, I will try to tilt to the extent feasible. Thanks |

Thanks for the information and for the reference, it came back alive in the morning. Just got home and I am generating up to 400w at the moment. At least it's an improvement compared to when I had it on the roof where I would not have seen anything by this time of the day. @lexi28 it's only one of the panels that store some water after rain, the rest just have sprinkle of water on them. Unfortunately we missed the panel measurement by a few mm so panel could not sit/fit well on the rack, I will try to re-tilt to avoid storage of water. mank1234: Nothing to fear. It's GK and MK (axpert) bug. Some people have complained of loosing generation just after cloud shading. Probably, a future firmware upgrade may solve it.
If you put OFF inverter and ON it again it will start working normally. Or after a little while it will pick up on its own. Otherwise by next morning it will work normally.

Bros so I have done the setup; could not get a bus bar for now so I used the DC breaker as the common connection point for both the SPD and PV. However I have noticed that it seem the battery consumption has increased, does the SPD and DC breakers consume power on their own? Update nevermind the source of drain identified - it's self inflicted. Secondly, I have moved my stuff to standalone, I was happy to see over 1kw yday at relatively high sunlight. However when it rained and after sunlight came back I lost generation, noting was coming in, I noticed water was still on the panels could that be the reason why I was not generating anything? NiyiOmoIyunade: Imagine that there are two loooong wires going from PV array to CC - one is the positive PV cable and the other is the negative PV cable.
You want your SPD to sit 'in line' with these two PV cables that go to the CC - you want your SPD to 'plug into' the circuit made between PV and CC *without breaking the connection* and monitor it for voltage surges - if SPD senses an incoming voltage above its set threshold on either positive or negative PV to CC cable, it immediately shorts that terminal that has higher than desired voltage to its (SPD's) ground terminal so that the surge voltage is primarily diverted to ground and does not make it to the CC. This is roughly the operating principle.
See very rough diagram below - bus bars are the best method to bring mulltiple cables together but you can use whatever technique makes for a solid mechanical and electrical connection

ojtech8291: I have faced this kind thing before. Assuming he combines them in series and VOC of the cc is 100v but the inverter input voltage is 24v. Is it not going to affect the inverter? I will expect he goes for higher cc of 40A or 50A. Thank you. Am not sure I get that part, how is the input 24v, maybe you meant the battery input? If yes then that's fine, an intelligent CC/inverter will handle that easily. My GK series hybrid inverter has a voc of 120-450v and it only accepts 24v battery set-up. At the moment I have 6 panels in series (above 200v) and all is good. However ofcourse if he has funds he can go for higher amps CC I actually think by the time you get a above100voc CC it will already be a higher amps CC. |

durumibaka: Thanks bros for that answer, but am corrently using 300w/24v×3 solar panel, what will be the effect since am using 20a 12v/24v solar charge controller. Thanks. From my little DIY experience, It depends on the max VOC of your CC if it's up to 100v or more then I guess you will have your panels in series so amps is maintained but voltage will increase |

Deluxe8000: thanks for the reply. What can i do? i am gradually loosing hope in solar system after inviting 2 engr. from nairaland. The last engr. promised me that it won't happen again after the installation of 580w solar panels(280 poly+300 mono) before i bought two batteries at the same time. The one i connected to the solar system is dead within 3months while the other one that i use with on-grid to charge is still very much ok. It depends on your consumption as well. How much load do you have on your solar setup? From your explanation it seem you have a solar setup with a 12v battery and Southey l another utility setup with another 12v battery, is that correct? Why did you choose to do mono and poly and what charge controller are you using? |

It's good you've raised your concern and from what I read, all these may be due to miscommunication. I did an HL through someone else sometime ago, I was also as curious and perhaps more curious than you. I asked for the shipping details and was provided a draft as well, asked for original and got similar response as you got from him. When I asked for delivery at my location outside Lagos, I got similar price range as you got. However the agent of my customer that cleared my car took the car to my customer's address in Lagos which was where I picked up. I think it should be possible for amdmam's agent to deliver the car to a specific location within Lagos where you can pick-up (incase your location in Lagos is too far; yes certain 15KM can take hours to get to in Lagos ) Finally you could find time to pick-up at port (heard it's even better as one can ensure certain car accessories don't get missing, in my case my jerk was stolen) and pay up once you receive your car. I certainly believe that it is fair that you see your car before paying balance and I hope Amdman will agree with that as well All the best and do keep us posted. codedcliq: The time I thought I will comment on this post is when I have received my car from Amdman. However, recent happenings have necessitated this post.
Preamble: I contacted Amdman concerning one of the cars he posted. Total amount (inclusive of clearing) he posted was N1.1m. I made a payment of N800k to him so he can purchase and ship. Days later, he told me the car owner is no longer willing to sell so he had to source for another. No wahala. He got one with total amount (inclusive of clearing) as N1.25m. My downpayment was still witihin 60-70% of the total cost so all was fine. He sent pictures and videos to me and posted same here. All good.
Weeks later, I contacted him to send me a scanned copy of the original bill of lading. Please note scanned copy as I wasn't expecting him to courier the original to me since I am not the one clearing. First he said it wasn't ready, then later he said he will send a part of the original. After a couple of weeks, he send he can only send the Draft Bill of Lading. When I asked why he can't just scan the original Bill of Lading with his phone and send to me, below was his response verbatim
"The amount of bad press that will be generated against us if anything goes wrong with anyone’s car is not something we are willing to risk"
How sending a scanned copy of transport document will make anything go wrong with someone's car is what I am still trying to undestand. I have been working with shipping documents for almost 10years now so there is no risk he wants to claim that I don't know of. You can only clear your car at the Seaport if you have the original Bill of Lading and evidence to show you are the one it was consigned to. Any clearing agent here is free to counter this.
Two reasons I requested for the scanned Bill of Lading 1. To apply for car financing - since I am pre-ordering the car, it is one of the required documents 2. To be able to indepently verify that actual shipment took place using the International Maritime Bureau portal
He eventually sent the draft bill of lading which didn't qualify for the intended purpose. Still I moved on.
Later, he sent the tracking details of the vessel / shipment to me. As at this moment, tracking details he sent is still showing that Vessel will likely arrive today, not that it has arrived. He chatted me up days ago that the ship has berthed and I should pay the balance of 450k. No wahala. I told him to send the contact of the clearing agent so I can make arrangement to have him deliver the car to my place. Let me state here that on the Invoice he sent, two conditions stood out:
1. Pick up at Lagos port 2. 2nd payment due after confirmation of vehicle purchase
The Pick up at Lagos port is not something I am comfortable with. This was not communicated until I made the advance payment. His post here after he decided to be handling the clearing cost was - "buying, shipping and clearing" - not that the buyer will still have to go the port to pick up the car.
Still I was ready to proceed but I told him I will rather the Agent delivers the car to my place so he should send his number let me liaise with him. Next thing he told me is quoted verbatim below:
"Depending on your location, that can range from 20k to 50k"
So I have to tell him facts and any clearing agent here is free to counter. If I pay a clearing agent to clear my car in Lagos ports, I expect him to deliver the car to my place (they already calculate these costs in the fees they charge). If I am outside Lagos, he is free to negotiate additional cost with me for delivery. Why will I have to go to the port to pick up a car when I am paying for clearing? I can as well just get another clearing agent to do the clearing for me then. Imagine driving a non-registered car when I am not a car dealer or clearing agent and you are stopped by the police. Nigeria police do not respect the 90days grace period. That's why we have clearing agents for this.
He started threatening me with demurrage fees. Hello, you've been the one providing all the information. I can't run an independent check because you refused to provide a scanned copy of the transport document. The draft Bill of Lading you sent shows the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd gives 21 days free demurrage (which was clearly stated on the draft you yourself sent). So even if the claim by you that the vessel is in Tincan is true, it is after 21days that demurrage will start counting.
He is yet to provide the contact of the clearing agent but he wants me to pay 100%, leave my work and go to the port to wait for car to come out.
The tracking details he sent shows vessel is not yet at Tincan but he claims otherwise.
Amdman, I am willing to pay the balance right now, that is not an issue. However, I need to: 1. Independently confirm that the shipment took place and vessel has arrived. You can get your clearing agent to come here and confirm this or you provide me with a scanned copy of the original bill of lading 2. I won't leave my work to come to the port to pick up a car and I can't & won't pay "20k to 50k" for a distance of less than 15km from the port to my place.
I still believe Amdman is legit and these things are just business issues that can be resolved. I won't have brought this here if he has shown some flexibility because I even told him I may have to bring it public and he said I should go ahead. So fellow buyers, please if I am the one that is being unreasonable, kindly let me know. I am not a rigid person. Though I believe it doesn't make sense for one to pay for clearing fees and still have to go to the port to pick up an unregistered car to drive home.

again, if your inverter has equalization setting, and you have utility power supply, that shud also suffice, 4hrs of equalization per month is the standard for most users I have been looking to get response to the question I asked earlier on equalization, this serves my purpose. If I may further ask, so it's better to do equalization on utility and not on solar source? What if utility power goes off in the process, is there a risk to my batteries? |

With that setup, you can only connect in parallel (since a typical 300v panel is 24v) and at least east panel should give 8A or more, this means you can only do max 300x2 with that controller configuration. |
