DAURA— President Muhammadu Buhari said, yesterday, he inherited no legacy from the previous governments of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan. The President, who spoke against the backdrop of current economic recession facing the country, said the administrations left nothing to build on.He said patriotic Nigerians had nothing to fear as far as the war against corruption was concerned, stressing that his government would be fair to all. Buhari, who spoke in Daura, Katsina State, shortly after attending Eid prayers to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, warned that whose who abused public trust would face justice, in addition to returning their stolen assets to the nation’s coffers. The President expressed gratitude to Nigerians for supporting Federal Government’s policies, programmes and actions aimed at improving security, revamping the economy and combating corruption. He said: “We should thank God, the reports I’m getting, which is very pleasing, is that we will have a bumper harvest this year. I want Nigerians to realise that what this government inherited after 16 years of PDP government was no savings, no infrastructure, no power, no rail, no road and no security. “Nigerians can see what we have done on Boko Haram and what we are doing to resolve the problem in the Niger Delta. “Before the elections, we identified three major problems confronting our country. The first is security; we need to sufficiently secure our country to manage it well. “The second is the economy, especially jobs for the youths and fighting corruption, which is continuous. “For the youths, graduates and non-graduates, who are interested in agriculture, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the CBN, is doing something to provide employment for them.” source www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/govt-inherited-nothing-obasanjo-yaradua-jonathan |
FORMER Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala yesterday said it was better to allow those managing Nigeria’s economy to do the best they could, noting that there could be solutions to the present economic decline in the country. She also noted that she would not be available to serve the present administration if overtures were made to her by President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that Nigeria boasts of competent people, who would offer their services when called upon. Okonjo-Iweala, who said this while participating in an Aljazeera programme: The Stream, regretted that the economic gains recorded in Africa started eroding a few years ago, noting that solving macroeconomic question was key to fixing the continent’s economic challenges. She specifically said that having a firm control over the rate of inflation in addition to ensuring a stable exchange rate should be prioritised by African governments. She said: ‘’ One of the things you learn as you get wiser is to talk less as you grow older. I have spent my time contributing to the country. It will be better to live those managing the economy to do what they know how to do. There can be solutions. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Ex Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala “I am not a typical politician. I went in as a technocrat. I think on the continent we have seen a period when the economy was doing well, in the last two years we have been experiencing challenges. We need to focus on the basics which are macro-economics. You must get the fundamentals like having a stable exchange rate and having inflation under control. “I served my country for seven years and it was a great honour. The second time was very tough but it is still an honour. I am not the only person who is a repository of knowledge. There are other people who can equally try their hands in running the economy. “I will advise young people not to wait for employment. They should create jobs to employ six people or more. During my time in government, we had a programme called You Win designed to support young entrepreneurs. The whole idea was to have a business plan competition. “The idea was that they should create jobs. And each, created 9-10 jobs. The World Bank did an evaluation of it and found it good. I do believe that the government should come in. We started a peer to peer mentoring. Now, one of the things I want to say is that creating employment is not only about struggles, it is about managing success.” Also, counseling people on accounting, bookkeeping and not falling apart is very important.” Responding to a question on how the anti-corruption war was fought during her time in government, she said: “It was a very tough fight, I must thank my team, you don’t do it alone, I had the support of an economic team in the Ministry of Finance. It was tough because at the end of the day you need to have some principles.” On her roles as a Finance Minister, Okonjo-Iweala said: ‘’The average life span of a Finance Minister is two year in a country. No one likes a Finance Minister because it is the business of saying no. It is very difficult and challenging. It was interesting for me. I wish I had seen myself as wielding power. All I saw was the job because I was seeing myself working for the country.” source www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/will-not-serve-buharis-govt-okonjo-iweala/ |

The geographical status of Enugu State as the gateway to and from the northern part of the country in the south-east,south-south geopolitical zones has been identified as the reason why Fulani herdsmen’s attacks have taken an upward trajectory, the leader, Hausa community in Enugu, Alhaji Abubakar Sambo revealed yesterday. Vanguard gathered that 90 percent of herdsmen migrating from the north to the south-east and south-south regions pass through the ever busy 9th Mile Corner, Ngwo, Enugu corridor to access their various destinations. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State visits Ndiagu, Attakwu, Akegbe-Ugwu in Nkanu-West Local Government Area of Enugu State, invaded on Thursday morning by over 50 Fulani Herdsmen armed with machetes. Slaughtered in the attack was a Catholic Seminarian, Lazarus Nwafor. This scenario, it was learned, has made the state prone to uncontrolled hibernation of the herdsmen. Sambo spoke against the backdrop, weekend, where Attaukwu youths protested the continued stay of herdsmen in their community after slaughtering a Catholic seminarian, Lazarus Nwafor and Ifeoma Agbo. Alhaji Abubakar Sambo, leader of Hausa community and member, Enugu Constituted Security Committee, said:”Enugu State is witnessing the spate of herdsmen attack because it is a major gateway to and from the northern part of the country to the south-east and south-south regions where these herdsmen come from.” “Before you access any part of the south-east or south-south, you must pass through Enugu. There are many routes which the herdsmen use to connect the state. Some of them come in through Kogi State-Uzo Uwani local government area of Enugu State. That was the route the herdsmen that attacked Nimbo used. “Other routes are Obollor-afor in Nsukka,Orakamu through Benue to Enugu,Aghamelumu-Nsukka route among other routes. The herdsmen ply these routes to any part of the south-east and south-south. Most of them that are migrant herdsmen decided to settle in some rural communities in Enugu State while on transit. This scenario is what i think, make Enugu prone to incessant herdsmen clashes”. source enugu state news |
